Pasta Imperiale is a fast food pasta stop, located in downtown Rome and perfect for a quick snack. We stopped in as we missed lunch on the way in from Venice and wanted something tasty and fast. All the pasta at Pasta Imperiale is all made onsite (something we actually watched). As for menu, you can choose your pasta and sauce. There are multiple combinations, we had two, and the staff will be happy to suggest some combinations. I found the pasta to be fresh and cooked just right. Some of the sauces seem to be a little too sugary or salty, but it is a 5-7 euro bowl of pasta, so I'm not complaining. Finding a place like Pasta Imperiale was the last thing my boyfriend and I expected to find in a city famous for its tourist spots. The food is fresh, fast, and tasty. Both of us could easily taste the difference between two sauces - tomato/bacon and tomato/basil - that could have been made the same and most would never know. The kitchen is an open kitchen where you can see the chef rolling, cutting, and measuring dough in between orders and chopping up fresh ingredients for the pasta. Unlike stores that trumpet their "made in house!" pasta, this is just the norm at Pasta Imperiale. I'd also like to note the amazing affordability. €5-6 for a plate of pasta, with the option for a "big portion" for an additional €2. Handmade pasta for €5 in Rome? Hell yes. This place was a pretty awesome lunch stop as we made our way back across the river from Castel Sant'Angelo. We dropped in right as they were opening at noon, sampled the pasta and wine, and I can confirm they have achieved the restaurant holy trifecta - fast, cheap and good. Pasta Imperiale which appears to be run by a young couple selling fresh pasta and a few sandwiches. It's nothing fancy - they have a few small tables along the wall and you can watch the owners make pasta through the glass windows. There are six types of pasta you can mix and match with seven sauces - pick your favorite. The traditional travel wisdom is that if the restaurant's menu is entirely in English, go somewhere else. This place broke the rules - the menu here was indeed entirely English, but it didn't feel touristy and the food was pretty good. I had the tortellini with the herb sauce - it was smaller than I've had before with bits of cheese in delicately folded pasta. It was really, really good. My companion had the gnocchi in butter and sage sauce, and that was also really excellent, especially for the price. Again, it wasn't fancy - we were eating off paper plates at a tiny table against the wall, but we could watch the owners making more pasta through the windows at the back, it wasn't crowded, it was tasty and hella cheap. All in all, this place is highly recommended. P.S. We also ended up buying a kilo of the gnocchi to-go, packing it up, and bringing it back to the States. After being smashed to hell in the unrefrigerated in the bottom of my bag, and after two days in our fridge, it was a solid mass of mangled pasta which I wasn't sure was edible any longer. In a desperate attempt to salvage it, I used a knife to cut it back into gnocchi shapes, rolled it in flour, and boiled it until it floated. The verdict - it was still pretty damn delicious, even after all that. read more

This is a hole-in-the-wall pasta place, and it serves fresh pasta for only €5. I wanted to make sure I tried different types of pasta while I was here, and because it was so cheap, I ordered two types- one to eat there and one to bring back to the apartment. The first one I ordered, the Butter Parmesan, was just mediocre, and the pasta was a little too al dente for my taste. However, the second sauce I tried, Ragu Bolognese, was literally the best sauce I've ever had. I have this issue with pasta that is too saucy, but this was not the case with this dish. It had just the perfect amount of ratio of meat sauce to pasta, and I could not stop eating it. I had actually planned on saving it for breakfast, but as soon as I had my first bite, I ended up finishing the whole thing. This is a little hole in the wall that caters to locals and travelers alike - a good sign! Friendly staff and great service for fast casual. Very extensive menu offerings including a variety of pastas, salads and other dishes. There are even beer and wine options. This place was so great we came back twice on our last trip. Some of the best tiramisu! The pastas are cooked perfectly al dente with a chew and a snap to the texture. You can tell it is very fresh. This was the worst pasta experience ever! The salad offered with the meal had mould on it. I couldn't believe they would serve this to someone. This meal took us straight to the bathroom! This was lack luster for me. Again, I tend to go for the basics when ordering Italian because I'm from Italy and to me nailing the basics is critical. I ordered tagliatelle con pomodoro e basilico. The homemade pasta was nice but the sauce lacked the complex and delicate flavor of a properly made tomato and basil sauce (like my mom's). We were on a self-researched walking trip through the city, and did not want a panino for lunch; we were determined to eat nothing but pasta for our after-wedding diet. This place was amazing! Fresh, homemade pasta, and the least amount of money we spent on a meal in Rome or Venice (for those yelpers who have been to Venice, it's very much like Alfredo's Pasta to Go...delicious, fast and cheap!). The young lady up front was very nice, and the cook waved to us from the back. I had the gnocchi with cream/bacon (panne e pancetta), and he had the farfalle with the meat sauce (ragu). I would have given her a higher rating but the two dishes that we had the tomato and basil sauce plus the carbonara; the tomato and basil sauce was kind of bland although bright and fresh tasting. This is by far the best (and cheapest) pasta place I've had in Rome. There is a pretty good selection of pasta and sauce choices so it was hard for me to choose. I got the tagliolini with the panna pancetta sauce and it was so good oh my gosh. They also have these homemade sandwich things that looked quite tasty. Everything is so reasonably priced, the pasta is no more than €6. I do remember that you could get a pasta, water and tiramisu for €6. I would highly recommend this place if you're on the go or even if you just want some good, fresh, authentic pasta. The actually place is quite small and was hot (I went at the beginning of June), but it was worth every bead of sweat rolling my neck to eat this. While exploring a neighborhood west to piazza navona, there sits this tiny place that serves freshly boiled pasta.
