We were in the area and stumbled on Pasta Imperiale when another restaurant across the way was packed. When you enter there are 4-5 small tables to sit, an open kitchen, and the register. We ordered the ravioli and spaghetti with the meat sauce and it was delicious. The homemade pasta was good and affordable. We got our food quickly and got to watch them make it from afar. So three of us ate here last week. We saw this reviewed on a couple YouTube food recommendation videos of Rome and were excited to eat here. We ordered 2 gnocchi, one with ragu sauce and one with butter and Parmesan sauce. I am always looking for pillowy soft gnocchi. This gnocchi was not pillowy soft, it was a little dense and heavy. It wasn't the worst gnocchi I've ever had but it was definitely disappointing. The butter Parmesan sauce was ok, not super delicious, but passable. The ragu sauce wasn't very tasty. I would like for this to be a constructive review. Looking around at the myriad of restaurants I wanted to find something that represented coming to Italy. I came to this restaurant because of Yelp. I thought it would have helped me in getting to a good restaurant. The spinach raviolis were pretty hard. I thought that maybe that it was just me. I tried eating "around" the pasta part and tried eating just the inside cheese. It seemed like it was undercooked. Anyways. My son said the same thing. We stopped on here based on Yelp reviews and it's proximity to our rental apartment . The location is very near to the Vatican (across the bridge from it and the Castel Sant' Angelo). The pasta is made in front of you. You choose from four pastas at €5.50 or gnocchi or ravioli for €6.50. These prices in old city Rome and very-very affordable, especially when you consider the fresh made pasta. Then you get a choice of eight sauces that the chef makes in front of you. I went with the puttanesca sauce (olives, capers, tomatoes, etc). A large portion weighing 160 grams is what is served. €2 more for 260 grams. What's the downside? Paper plates. But there is a small inside dining area with no tip or up-charge. Fresh ground parmigiana is on the tables. read more

Very good. I got the Strazzopeni with the pesto sauce which I know I shouldn't because Pesto isn't Rome's specialty but I figured in Italy would be still better than the States. The pasta was vegan by itself but of course the pesto with added cheese doesn't keep it that way anymore. Service was really friendly and it took like 5-7 minutes so I ducked into the little leather shop across the street and when I popped my head up they had mine ready. The flavor was really good and the pasta cooked well with a generous sprinkle of cheese. Great for a quick pasta fix. We also ended up getting it once more when we were tired and just wanted to eat in our hotel room, the gnocchi with pesto was very good, the gnocchi pretty light, slightly chewy. My husband and tubey pasta with spicy sauce and that was something really special. It tasted something straight out of a restaurant for how perfectly it was cooked and I would highly recommend it. read more

However, the pasta at Pasta Impériale was subpar (we had the lasagna, gnocchi with ragu, and tagliatelle with ragu). Pasta Imperiale is one of my favorite pasta restaurants in the entire world. It's an incredible dining bargain for a major city like Rome, and it's great for both budget travelers and foodies alike. The concept is simple, fresh and fast. The pasta is literally made right in front of your eyes in the glass walled kitchen in the back. Sometimes you'll get lucky enough to watch the cooks hand rolling and cutting the pasta dough. The place is very small so you can watch (and smell) as your pasta is boiled and prepared with a fresh sauce. This is gourmet, quality food and ridiculously rock-bottom cheap prices. Every dish costs only 5 Euros. There will be a daily handwritten menu with a list of pastas on one side and a list of sauces on the other. You pick your pasta and pick your sauce (based on what the kitchen is making fresh that day) and pay a few Euros for a large, satisfying portion. Sometimes the restaurant runs out of some types of pasta by the end of the day, so make sure you have a backup choice. You really can't go wrong with any of the tasty noodles. The sauces are all cooked to order too. This stuff is legit! There's only limited counter seating so consider yourself lucky if you happen to snag a seat at busy times. read more

Totally worth a trip here. Great quality food for a cheap price. They have seats inside but people literally eat and go. They have a lunch special set but the pasta is more than enough for me. I would highly recommend the ragu bolognese. Delicious meat sauce with just the perfect amount of red sauce. The pasta is hot and fresh and again delicious. Amazing handmade pasta! This is a no-frills quick place to get some deliciously fresh pasta. They have a list of pastas and a list of sauces -- pick one of each, and they will make it on the spot. One of our favorite spots to get fresh pasta in Italy! It sadly didn't live up to the expectations or the images on Yelp. They just reheated pasta in a frying pan and gave us somewhat small portions compared to the size of the plates they were served on. We tried several different pastas and sauces, and found the gnocchi and ragu/meat sauce to be the best. This didn't stand out above the other takeaway pasta places we tried in Italy, and while it isn't particularly bad, I might suggest spending your limited time and money in Rome at another place. The kitchen and bathroom didn't look as clean as they could be, and slightly subtracted from the experience. It is only 5 Euro, so it's hard to beat in value and concept, but it still leaves a lot to be desired. You may enjoy another place more. read more

Great little gem located about a mile away from the Vatican . This place offers a decent portion of food that's pretty yummy for about 5 euros (doesn't get any better than that). The place is really small about three small tables and there isn't any AC but the heat isn't a problem especially when you have great food....and you're not charged a service tax for sitting down. This place gets a 5 star for the price but the food is a solid 4. The tortellini with bolognese sauce is amazing and you must try the ravioli. I would love to give this place a great review for their food, but I CANNOT condone their business practices. Today, September 15th at around 3:30pm, my husband and I went here for the second time since we've been in Rome. Our first experience here was stellar! Today's trip was not. We ordered our dinner and my husband went to pay with his debit card. The girl behind the counter had a bad attitude from the first item we told her, but we chalked it up to it being hot and Roma drawing 2-2 to the worst team in the league. She told him, "card no go through." I was less than a foot away so I heard all of this. We both thought that was weird but figured it was because we are in Europe and traveling internationally. He gave her his credit card and she charged it as normal. He checked his bank account when we got to a pub down the street with WIFI to see why the charge was blocked and saw that she charged BOTH his debit card AND credit card for around $30. He went to speak with her about it and she told him it wasn't her fault and she didn't do anything. She told him to "calm down and I did nothing wrong and it isn't my fault" This type of behavior and business practice is UNACCEPTABLE. After speaking with the pub down the street about what happened, they informed us that when they didn't give him the first receipt showing that the card was declined that, that action is illegal all over the EU and to inform the Police. They even offered to go speak with them because they spoke fluent Italian. I wouldn't expect this behavior from a restaurant that has multiple locations within Rome. But the blonde girl working on Sunday afternoon/evening at this location is not only a thief but also a liar. I would avoid these specific restaurants and go to any other pasta place that is ethical and is just as good. In case anyone thinks we are exaggerating or not being truthful we have screen shots from the bank to prove their was fraud on their part. My husband also admits that he was loud and obnoxious about this incident and left before he did anything that he would regret. read more

Meh. Cheap, well-made pasta, but it lacks in flavor--or that just might be the plate we got. Pumpkin ravioli with pumpkin and nuts sauce, but neither me or my friend could really taste the pumpkin. My friends who got the Gorgonzola sauce, however, loved it! Although they said the extreme flavor of the sauce overpowered the pumpkin for sure. Maybe I just had high expectations and a strong desire for pumpkin, but it was just okay. Everything is fresh, from pasta to sauces, and it is amazing: bits of fresh tomatoes in the sauce, green pesto not exactly spiced the same the 2 consecutive days we went there (it lacked a bit salt the first day, but was perfect the second day!). We tried several pastas, which are all delicious, but do not hesitate to order their gnocchis, which are amazing as weel. It's NOT a tourist trap. It's a small fast food place with a few small tables you can sit on. They made their own pasta. I think it's pretty authentic. Reasonable prices. There is no cover charge. And no added tip to the bill. Service is excellent. We gave some tips our own but you don't have to. It was just pasta and sauce. Nothing memorable. The ravioli wasn't that good either. When we opened up the carbonara pasta, it had fused into a box shape. lol. The gnocchi was kind of soggy. The lady who worked here was super nice. The guy mixing the pasta wasn't so friendly. He just seemed interested in smoking his cigarette. Pasta Imperiale serves inexpensive, homemade pasta. It's not fine dining, but if you're simply interested in wonderful meal, then it's an excellent destination. Located on a street where there are several fast-serve pasta places on it, I chose this one partly based on what I read about it, and party based on how wonderful everything smelled when I walked past :-) PI offers a combination meal. The combo includes pasta, water (carbonated or flat) plus a salad or tiramisu for just under 8 euros. Their stuffed pastas and a larger portion size can cost another 1 or 2 euros. It's tough to complain about this kind of quality at those prices! My partner in crime and I shared the taglatella with bacon and cream, as well as the cappelleti with pesto. Both selections were cooked to perfection, and were both satisfying and delicious! While I usually opt for another glass of wine instead of dessert, the tiramisu was included in the combo, so I tried it. It was quite good; not too sweet, and very light. I highly recommend Pasta Imperiale for a fast, inexpensive, and enjoyable meal. read more

YASSSS I frickin love this place!! It's literally steps away from our Airbnb, and i've eaten here at least once a day our entire trip. I had the gnocchi with the tomato and bacon sauce with fresh parmesan on top. My friend had the carbonara (she argues that it has too much pepper, but I digress). Handmade pasta for €5 in Rome? Hell yes. This place was a pretty awesome lunch stop as we made our way back across the river from Castel Sant'Angelo. We dropped in right as they were opening at noon, sampled the pasta and wine, and I can confirm they have achieved the restaurant holy trifecta - fast, cheap and good. Pasta Imperiale which appears to be run by a young couple selling fresh pasta and a few sandwiches. It's nothing fancy - they have a few small tables along the wall and you can watch the owners make pasta through the glass windows. There are six types of pasta you can mix and match with seven sauces - pick your favorite. The traditional travel wisdom is that if the restaurant's menu is entirely in English, go somewhere else. This place broke the rules - the menu here was indeed entirely English, but it didn't feel touristy and the food was pretty good. I had the tortellini with the herb sauce - it was smaller than I've had before with bits of cheese in delicately folded pasta. It was really, really good. My companion had the gnocchi in butter and sage sauce, and that was also really excellent, especially for the price. Again, it wasn't fancy - we were eating off paper plates at a tiny table against the wall, but we could watch the owners making more pasta through the windows at the back, it wasn't crowded, it was tasty and hella cheap. All in all, this place is highly recommended. P.S. We also ended up buying a kilo of the gnocchi to-go, packing it up, and bringing it back to the States. After being smashed to hell in the unrefrigerated in the bottom of my bag, and after two days in our fridge, it was a solid mass of mangled pasta which I wasn't sure was edible any longer. In a desperate attempt to salvage it, I used a knife to cut it back into gnocchi shapes, rolled it in flour, and boiled it until it floated.
