This place is an experience in itself! Besides the pastas being absolutely delicious, the singing and the show was beyond superb! Everyone working there is super friendly and very accommodating- i told them we were there celebrating a friends birthday and they especially sang a beautiful song for her along with brought a special dessert out for her. We did the prefix menu where you get 3 pastas and the antipasto - we opted out for the antipasto and asked if we could get an extra pasta instead and they were totally cool about it! The drinks are also amazing here! You need a reservation to eat here and it's worth every penny don't leave Amsterdam without visiting this restaurant!! read more

Pasta e Basta is a particular reataurant, busy, you have to reserve one of the two diner sessions (from 6 to 9 or from 9 onwards). You can choose a 2 course menu or a 3 course, pretty expensive options both. The decor is a bit old, dark, and the specialty of the place is the singing of the waiters. Antipasti were giving me the impression of being prepared well in advance (the day before?), while the pasta was ok. You get 3 types of pasta to share, food I would nevertheless note average despite being 'inspired' by a Dutch chef, marketing that is reflected in the prices. Prosecco was good but the Chardonnay was terrible. Luckily the service was nice. read more

I was in the mood for some authentic Italian pasta, beyond the spaghetti that you can get everywhere, so I asked the hotel for a recommendation. When they recommended this place, we had no idea what we were about to get. First, the food was excellent, but that's not what this place is about. This place is all about the singing staff and the piano player. Basically, all the servers, waiters and waitresses take turns walking around the place with a microphone in hand, singing songs everyone knows, accompanied by a very good piano player. Also, it's important to understand that these are not Karaoke singers; these are talented singers who know how to sing and work the crowd. Went here for the tail end of our anniversary trip (25th) to Europe. I had been bragging to my wife for a couple of years about it. The result was...not good. Food and music were great, but we were essentially ignored by the waitstaff (Jasmine). After an initial apology for the delay when we got menus (had been there for over 30 minutes), the waitress we had seemed to continually forget we were there. The food and service is wonderful and the show put on by the staff is simply unique and a great treat that adds to the romance of this place. If you are looking for a lovely atmosphere, awesome singing waiters combined with delicious Italian food, this is the place you definately would like to check it out! The menu is changed nowadays and is based on the Ron Blaauw menu (shared dining) where you first can try the delicious (as much as you want!) anti-pasta! The anti-pasta consist of many things like: eggplant, deliciois salads, tuna, salami, ham and many more. After this appetizer which you can get at the buffet which is set up in the piano, you can choose 3 different pasta's which you can share with your friends. We have chosen spagetthi with ricotta, ravioli and risotto with gamba's. All were great and definately filling! Unique selling point of this place are the singing waiters! They are all very talented and some of them even sing in Italian or opera and they even come by your table :) The price has been increased to €37 for the anti-pasta & pasta, which is a bit pricey though. This place is, by far, my favorite place in the entire world. And this is coming from someone who travels the globe for a living. Whether I am in Europe, Asia, South America or just a great American city, I always make it a point to go experience the local culture and restaurants. In all my travels, I have yet to find a place that could compare to Paste e Basta. The Good: The super friendly staff caters to your every need. They are patient as they go through the extensive menu with you. After you order, you can go to the fresh salad and appetizer bar that is located in the belly of a piano that is being played while you serve yourself. The Better: The food is exquisite. Large family style portions are great for sharing. I have yet to find something that I didn't love. Every ingredient and plate setting is thoughtfully used and you can tell that nothing is done as an afterthought. The Best: Every member of the staff is a professionally trained singer. Every few minutes one of the wait staff, including the one that has been serving you, will break out in song from anything to American classics, to current top hits, to classical Italian. Very very impressive, talented group. Overall, eating at Pasta e Basta is so much more than eating out....it really is a sensory experience that will not soon be forgotten. Wow. If you want to hear people sing the greatest hits from the last century while eating food that is on par with microwavable frozen dinners then this place is for you. The starters, which are served as a buffet looked and tasted like they were yesterday's leftovers from previous guests. Not a single dish was warm, and nothing was worth eating. Oh and the main courses... yummy. Sauce like concrete neatly congealed on pasta that wasn't cooked. When my mouth has to bring moisture to the food in order for it to edible you know you've failed. Like three plates full of crackers being brought you your table. Ask for extra water in advance. And the price... Surprise! It's per person. I spent close to 90 Euros for food inmates would riot over. And on a side note, what's with all the 5 star reviews? Seriously? Did you guys eat at a different restaurant? Came here tonight for dinner with my mother in law and 6 month old daughter. We asked the concierge at our hotel to recommend a good Italian place and this was his suggestion. He called and made us a reservation and mentioned we had a baby with us at the time he called. I wish the restaurant would have said "we don't want babies at our restaurant". That would have saved us a walked and waste of an hour of limited time on our trip. We were treated nicely when we arrived and the nice gentleman who sat us gave us a corner booth table and said that was we would be able to lay the baby down get comfortable etc. I thought that was nice he asked what we wanted to drink and he brought an iced tea for my mother in law and I asked for the wine list. He said he wasn't our server but that she was going to sing next and she would be by in a bit. Well 40 minutes later she never came by... No one ever came by. I still had a wine list in front of me and no one ever even came for my drink order. We were never even provided food menus. We saw the female server who apparently was supposed to help us come to other tables in our section and then leave before we could flag her down. We were hungry by daughter started to get fussy and so we decided to leave and go someplace else. It took my mother in law several minutes of standing at the bar to even pay for her iced tea. She mentioned why we were leaving and the male server replied she must have been waiting for the baby. This was an odd response waiting for what? My daughter was perfectly content the first 35 mins of sitting and waiting. I should add it was not busy and the place was maybe 1/3 full. Anyways don't go here unless you like horrible service. read more

Went here on a limb for the reviews of great food and great service - Sat at 7:30 and didn't get any food until 8:30. Service the rest of the night was not particularly good but not bad either. The food was mediocre at best and the servings were small. The singing was pretty weird and the waitresses went around to get everyone to stop talking and listen to song. I get it it's a performance but I'm paying to eat not listen to a concert. Wouldn't recommend to anyone. read more

Okay, in the spirit of full disclosure - Let me start by saying that I almost gave this place two stars but ended up giving one because - here goes - our bill for two people was 160 and we decided to pitch in 85 each and after we explained how much we wanted to be billed on each card ; the waitress goes ahead and charges me 185 on just my card and when I tell her what I actually wanted. Instead of offering to return the extra amount she goes "I'm sorry, I misunderstood.".................thats it............ So - I took one star off for that. The food - far from italian. very regular, some of the anti pasti seemed old. And one course of the meal was buffet - not that I'm against it but I went in for a sit down dinner. One star off for the food. The singing is okay to start with but ends up being too much and too many - you cant chat with friends at dinner and you cant finish conversations as somebody started singing. Also its very karaoke style with the pop songs etc. Not my thing. One star off for that. The ambience is okay but the service can be slow. And, they have 2 slots of dining - 6pm and 9pm and you have to make a reservation- one star off for that. The lovely Flip, your resident CM, was nice enough to make Christmas dinner reservations at Pasta e Basta for a couple of wayward Chicago travelers. She couldn't have picked a more lovely spot to celebrate! We had a 9:30pm seating for a pre-fixe menu for 65 euros a piece. Not too shabby for a three course meal on a major holiday! The menu was 100% in Dutch so it was kind of like a little dinner mystery. What would we be served?? Would we like it?? Kind of added a fun element to the whole experience. Dinner itself was lovely. First course was a beef carpaccio and tuna tartar. Second course was a shrimp pasta and the main course was a roasted chicken with mushrooms. I also went with the wine pairing, which for 14 euro was well worth the price. If you're expecting the traditional "Eye-talian" food, this obviously isn't your spot. If you're in the mood for something upscale with Italian influences, get here immediately! The only reason I hold back one star is that I wasn't totally in love with the singing waiters. You've heard about it, so I won't go into a huge amount of detail, but I just don't think it's natural for people to break into song. It's probably the same reason why I don't enjoy most musicals. ;) All in all, though, Pasta e Basta was an outstanding meal with a comfortable, fun atmosphere. read more

We visited this place two years ago. this lovely and cosy resto was recommended by our splendid local personal travel guide Martine Stam. Dishes were great. They serve Italian foods. But the most attractive thing was that the waiters in this resto sing. they sing really well and me and my wife like it. I went there last night and at first it seemed like a great place but it turned to be terrible. First tables are not separated so you could be sitting with 5 others that you don't even know. Second music was too loud (there are singers who sing, live music), you couldn't even hear person next to you, you needed to shout to hear each other. Then we got the menu and it had maybe 7-8 dishes. I asked for pasta bolognese they said they don't have it but that they will ask, then they said they could make it because they have lasagne bolognese. I asked for pasta 4 formaggi. They didn't have it. We ordered 3 dishes because and we had to wait a lot for them, when they brought it, they brought something small. The taste was good, but at the time they brought us we were already sick and tired of the place, loud music, waiting, not hearing each other...and in the end we asked for the bill. It was too expensive. We paid 140 euros for 3 small dishes and a bottle of wine (the cheapest one). So overall I would say it was terrible. If I were you I would pick something else and I wouldn't go to this place read more
