First issue: finding the darn place.  This entire 'corner' is technically the same address but the…read moreactual locksmith-shop is 'around the bend' - like two buildings 'up' on Small Street (a 'one-way' you couldn't access if you're already on Hackensack Street). Second issue: on Saturdays they open at 10am.  I got there around 10:20 and it's (still) closed.  (I ventured to one or two other places Google swore could help with getting keys made but they were all a bust) so I found myself... back here, 10:45-ish, and now they were open. You know how every kitchen in America has the infamous "junk drawer" that's a complete mess but you can always find what you need there?  Imagine that "life-sized" and that's what Mario's felt like. It's tiny but it's completely stuffed... keychains here, a 7-foot excited monkey (Halloween?) decoration there, various "floor models" of locks and door frames over here, and what looked like a box of mini-cakes (?!) over there. Guy behind the cluttered counter (whose shirt let me know he's not Mario) was super cool and helpful.   A few minutes later and for about $2/per key - I was back into the wild to continue with my day. Can't go wrong with the (essential) mom-and-pop stores like this that seem few and far between nowadays.

Most places I inquired had prices that seemed a bit high, or did not have blanks to reproduce the fob. I know electronic key fobs can be expensive, but some places quoted me $275-$350. Then I remembered The Main Lock Shop in Hackensack, that I frequented when I worked in an automotive shop nearby, many many years ago. I was greeted pleasantly by the 2 gentleman behind the counter, told them that I needed a replacement key fob. He asked me for the one that didn't work and promptly when to another room and found a match. Within another 10 minutes he cut the key, programmed it, & came outside to my car to make sure all the features worked. Outstanding Customer Service!!! Best of all, I only paid $178 dollars, a fantastic deal in my mind. I will surely be back for all my car and house key needs in the future.

Edit #3: Apparently that wasn't good enough so the owner is spam calling and texting me and asking me to refund their refund. Edit #2: After leaving my review they refunded me. About three months ago a friend of mine asked me to go to the shop to get a couple keys made, so I…read moreput it in my GPS and took a ride over to Garfield. The people at the counter seem to be friendly and listening to them as they conduct a business. It appeared that they had a good knowledge of the business that they were doing. So a few weeks later, I needed to get one of my Volkswagen key fobs programmed and I took a ride over to them again. The remote worked fine when I was at the shop but it didn't work once I got at home and they attempted to use it just as a back up key because it wouldn't open the doors and lock the doors . I went back, and I saw the person the program the key and I explained to him it wasn't working properly, and he immediately asked me how long ago I had the key fob programmed. Being as I had a bright blue Volkswagen Jetta, that is an overly a common vehicle I expected him to remember me as it was only three weeks ago and the representative took his programming unit. And went out to my car and again attempted to program the key fob. It worked fine while we were at the key shop but once again, the key fob does not work and is only good for unlocking unlocking the door. Because I paid over $120.00 to have the key fob programmed, I'm very disappointed and apprehensive about going back to the key shop because I was asked how long ago I had to key fob programed.
