So of the twenty-five reviews currently, seven are by people I have either met or am connected to on Yelp. I have been told repeatedly to go visit Paschall. Even by people at bakeries in town. First off I'm no Hipster, so I don't think I'd fit in at all. I'm also very comfortable at Andy's basement bar two floors down. That and Oak St. Draft House. But when some of your close friends, who happen to be motorcycle riders (as far from Hipsters as possible) suggest it and are going with you, you make the detour. As other reviews have said, it has an old prohibition era, time gone by feel to it. Books line the walls, dark artwork above the doors, a chessboard, nice music, no TVs and a set up to make the perfect absinthe drink. If you enjoy absinthe. They have a decent selection of beers and I enjoyed a Widmer Alchemy Ale. They have great cocktails and the woman was very deft at putting together a Manhattan for one of my friends. They also had a good selection of Tequila (also purchased by others). It's a really small place, but it was nice to just sit and talk, low music in the background and a nice view of the square. The hubby and I met some friends here the day before our 20 year reunion. It was their suggestion to meet here. We walked past the unnoticeable wooden door before we figured out it was the entrance. Then we climbed the tall staircase to the smoke filled bar. It reminded me of a scene right out of Austin Powers. It is "Groovy, Baby". It is an eclectic bar with floor to celling books, red velvet curtains, and a mesh of 70's furniture. After we found a place to sit my hubby meandered over to the bar to get us some beverages. He came back and said you have to come see the drink menu. This is not your beer and wine kind of place. This is pure mixology! You come here for cocktails. That is what they serve and the make it a show. The bartenders don leather aprons and a classic handlebar mustaches. They also add a Tom Cruise "Cocktails and Dreams" showboating while making your drink. I ordered the French Martini, with vodka, Chambord raspberry liqueur, pineapple juice and lemon. The hubby can't get out of his box and ordered a beer. It wasn't too loud. We were able to relax and catch up with some old friends in our comfy round sectional in the corner of the bar. read more

I've loved Paschall's for years but I guess they have new staff. My friend and I visited last night, and a shorter female bartender seemed angry from the second we walked up to the bar. She asked to see some ID after my friend ordered her drink (which is totally fine) but after my friend provided her ID and reached for it back when the bartender handed it back - we were told that we needed to leave. The bartender said that my friend "snatched" her ID back, so we needed to go. I saw the whole thing and my friend certainly didn't snatch anything. Even if she did, that would still be quite a dramatic reaction from the bartender to say the least. We walked out like she asked, but before we could make it all the way down the stairs another bartender followed us out continuing to yell at us about the "snatching." The unprofessional fight started by the bartender ended with the bartender calling my friend a "fat b***". Insane behavior. read more

We been to Paschall so many times. Not because we like this bar, but this is the only bar that has a good vibe. We just wanted to show our friends the nice place in Denton. However, the service is unwelcome every time. Doesn't matter how much tip you gave them. The girl in the front was rude and bad attitude. A friend recommended Paschall's to my girlfriend and I to check out. He told us that it was a speakeasy that has some pretty pricey drinks but would be fun to go grab a drink or two at for the hell of it. We went out on my last night in Denton to do just that! We had a hard time finding the place. Had to go into another bar nearby to ask where it was. I won't tell you what the entrance looks like because it would ruin the fun of the adventure in finding it! Afterall, this is a speakeasy! We got upstairs and entered a very nice upstairs lounge adorned with filled bookshelves and decoration all over the place. This place seemed classier then your average pub so we dressed up a little rather then wearing jeans and a t shirt. It was around midnight so alot of people dressed casually were there and were a quite rowdy. My girlfriend didn't seem to enjoy that but thats what you should expect at a bar when its getting later in the night. We lucked out and grabbed a spot. I got us some cocktails. We tried the raspberry beret and the espresso martini. The espresso martini was great and looked so beautiful. Sadly we didnt stay long due to the noise but that might have been a good thing since drinks were pricey. We had another round and left. I'm sure this review is not the first review you are reading for Paschall. That being said, yes, definitely believe everything great that everyone else says about this place. It is indeed very awesome. They just finished a renovation and expansion, and I wasn't sure it was possible, but the place looks even more amazing. The bartenders here really and truly care about the art of crafting cocktails. The drinks these mixologists create are more than worth the price, ESPECIALLY during Happy Hour M-F 4pm-7pm when they have selected cocktails for only $5! Filled with cozy little nooks and cranys, tons of books, chess sets, and live jazz every Sunday night. Don't call it overpriced, pretentious, snooty, or whatever those lessers say about it. Not an easy place to find, and I guess they like it that way. Once you find your way in and up the stairs, you'll enter what feels a bit like a prohibition-era speak easy. I went here on my 21st birthday bar crawl and it is an awesome place. It feels a little more sophisticated than some of the typical college bars on Fry and in the area. I ordered an old fashioned and they actually gave it to me for free since it was my birthday. Very good drink, my friends enjoyed what they ordered as well. I would be here daily but for the cigarette smoke. It has an abundance of charm and atmosphere, not to mention cocktails galore beyond the expected. Sadly, even when it's empty (not often), it reeks of stale cigarettes. It's also small enough and closed in enough that if you can't really deal with smelling like an ashtray the rest of the night, you just can't hang here. Hence my 3 stars. Oh my goodness I have found my new favorite spot. I had no idea it was even there, but here is an oasis of several of my favorite things: dark, library like quarters dipped in rich colors and details; prohibition style pouring; men in mustaches (even fake ones). The moment I walked in I knew this little bar was a perfect spot for grabbing a strong cocktail and sitting down with friends. They kept the music a mix between soul, new modern, and electronic. The main part of the parlor (because it is a parlor) was lit only by lamp light and other areas my unique overhanging light features. Dark reds, deep browns and greys are how they do. The front entry was actually one area that I felt was straight out of an episode of "Mad Men" with a pre-20's flair. They have one bar located in the far back with friendly and cute servers. I ordered a Whiskey Sour and was pleased that it not only had a strong kick but was made to perfection. I also tried their Espresso Martini and it was very delicious. The only down side to me is that you can smoke inside. :( I hate leaving a bar smelling like an ashtray, but that's the way Denton rolls. The design of the bar was nice and the drinks were fair at best but I was expecting either old standards or jazz or something more in line with the term "speakeasy" and the vibe the place was intending. Something more quiet and relaxing that allowed for conversation. Instead it was rap music and too loud to ignore! Really? That's already played in every other bar and was looking for something different in a speakeasy. I asked the girl that was watching the door why that choice of music and she said the manager on duty like it because he could "think". Whatever. My favorite bar. I have been a lot of places with drinks. This is my favorite place. The entrance is not easily spotted from the street (no Paschall signage) though it can be accessed from Locust and is Right next to Andy's Bar door. Walk up the stairs to find a delightfully vintage space with multiple libraries, darts & pool, and an extensive cocktail menu. Prices can average about 10$ a drink, which is pricey in comparison to other Denton bars, but for the quality, it is totally worth it. This was the first bar I've been to in Denton, and I loved it! My friend and I decided to drive up to Denton on a weekend to visit the local bars. We decided to go here first. The bar sits on the second floor, so the entrance was quite small and could be easily looked over. Felt like a modern speakeasy. We made our way upstairs and found a nice place to sit. The inside reminded me of a library. Wooden bookcases with small wooden tables with various classic board games. I found an open chess set so decided to sit there while my friend got us drinks. The drinks took a longer time to come out since some of the drinks take a little bit longer to make. I settled for the raspberry beret, cause of the song, while he settled for one of the many beers they sell. The drink was cute. Served in a champagne flute, pink, with a raspberry. The drinks were slightly tangy, sweet, and very light. The place was on the quieter side, which was nice. Overall, this place is very chill, and the drinks were pretty good. I enjoyed Paschall when it was first opened, but mostly for its unique ambiance, its awesome music playlist, and its, then, decent selection of cocktails. Gradually but sturdily, Paschall has not only perfected its precision in making cocktails, but also managed to build up a fantastic repertoire of Pre-Prohibition era drinks that offer sophistication, class and bountiful of wow effects. Without a doubt, this Denton bar has transformed into a trendsetter in bringing those good old-school cocktails back and closer to our Denton folks, and has decisively climbed up the ladder and reached the top of my THE PLACE TO GO FREQUENTLY list for spending my hard earn cash. read more

I almost don't want to write a review, so people won't know about this cool little place, but then again this is why i must. First off the place does "rock" as one other person said even if you have to wait in line to get in. The waiting is actually worth it as they don't let it get over croweded. This makes you feel like you own a little section of the bar to yourself without people overcrowding you. Yes it is way to smokey in there(don't hesitate to open the windows). They had to spend a good amount to get the place looking like it did and it shows. You really wouldn't expect to see something like this in denton, which is why i hope it doesn't become overrun with too many college kids. The staff was friendly and helpful. I'd even say they were on top of their game as far as customer service goes. Five out of five for those guys and gals. Drinks....well this is why the place didn't get five out of five. As the bar boasted upscale liquor and drinks i was highly disappointed to only see makers mark as their "high end" bourbon. Matter of fact they really didn't have any selection of high end liquor. Prices were high for denton, but low when in contrast to dallas etc... For this type of place you really can't complain. I ordered an old fashion, and while i must admit i'm a bit picky, this was horribly "watered" down with club soda. On top of that i had to upgrade to makers mark(i wish they had a bigger selection of boubons). A huge huge disappointment with it. This is not what an old fashion should be and that may sound like a snob, but it's true. Now if you are wondering about the other drinks they were excellent!!! :) On that note i really really do like this place, it's a breath of fresh air for Denton even if you can't breathe from all the smoke. Quite the swanky lil' place and something new for Denton. You'll definitely need to come prepared to spend some money and leave smelling like an ashtray, but it's a great place to just relax and talk. They strictly moderate the 49 person capacity, so if you get there late on a busy night, expect to wait on a staircase for an unspecified amount of time. That being said, it's badass if you're one of the 49 already in that doesn't have to deal with being packed elbow to elbow in a hot and sweaty bar. It has a really nice ambiance and, in my opinion, is the best decorated bar in Denton of its kind. If you can catch it early in the night before the smoke gets too thick, it's nice to just sip slowly and listen to some unique mixes and/or older music. Kind of makes you feel like you're living in another time. Definitely a bit more scene/hipster, but still has a very "real" feel to it with very friendly bartenders. Again, depending on what time and night you go, the type of crowd may vary. Perfect place to watch the sunset on the Courthouse. I highly recommend the espresso martinis. read more

Oh, Paschall. How I love you. Also how I hate you. My first experience with Paschall was with fellow Yelper Natalie R. We went for some after-work-venting-drinks, and the quiet, tucked away nature of Paschall (which kindly allows me to chain-smoke myself into oblivion) seemed very well suited for the occasion. As far as ambience goes, we're all pretty aware that Paschall is a hipster bar. The decor is basically your parents' basement den, shag carpeting and all. I'm 90% sure they robbed my aunt's house for some of the furniture. Their massive book collection is excellent, the seating is quite comfortable, and the lighting allows you to lurk to your heart's content. Paschall makes a lot of solid cocktails. It's pricey, but I don't mind paying more for nicer drinks. They make a pretty solid White Russian, and the most perfect G&T I've had at this point in my life. They have a pretty regular rotation of house-infused liquor, which generally is used in some fancy, signature cocktail of the week. They use fresh accoutrements for the drinks, which is probably my favorite part. I mean, you can use some premium liquor for your well drinks, but if your mint/limes/oranges are way past their prime, you're wasting my time. Honestly, had I written this review a month or two ago, I would have rated it 4 or 5 stars - the cocktails are really that delicious. The service is hit or miss, but I expect the aloof bartender here. What really turned me off was more or less my entire last experience at Paschall. I waited 20 minutes at the bar to be served. Now, I'd totally dismiss this, since they were a busy on a Friday night, but the bartender was serving people BEHIND me in line. Annoying, but again, busy night. I ordered two double G&Ts. The bartender told me my total was $16. Rough for two drinks, but okay. I gave him a $20 bill, and he returned with $2. Somewhere, in the void between my G&Ts and Aha's "Take On Me" filtering through the speakers, $2 disappeared. I attempted to get the attention of one of the bartenders, but no dice. I was short-changed and I wasn't even being acknowledged. Also, the G&T wasn't as good as it should have been. Perhaps it was sullied, as my innocence had been stolen from me in the form of $2. All in all, I probably won't be back any time soon. Which is unfortunate, because there's so much I like about Paschall Bar, and it's one of two places I take friends for drinks. The door to Paschall Bar can be hard to find if it's your first time here. It is on the square, next door to Andy's Bar. There isn't a sign as far as I can see, although sometimes there is a sandwich board next to the door. When you walk in, the stairs going up lead to the bar. To your left, a guy at a desk sits and will ask you for your ID if he doesn't recognize you. You do have to provide ID the first time to sign up for the club (weird liquor law thing). Okay, now you're inside after going up the stairs. I love the decor...lots of full bookcases, white string lights. I love the furniture and the speakeasy/60s vibe here. Always great music choices, too. The most important thing: the cocktails. Best cocktails in Denton. The bartenders are so good at what they do. The location of the bar is great. It's a wonderful addition to the square. The view from the bar is really nice, too. (The courthouse is beautiful at Christmas). So why only 3 stars? I'm a little bitter that the place allows smoking. I cannot full enjoy the carefully crafted (and not inexpensive) cocktail if my eyes are burning from the cigarette smoke. I try to go early to avoid this, but it doesn't work very well. There is no ventilation and the smoke is just overpowering. It's a 5 star place for cocktails, service, and ambiance, but really...the smoking is too much. read more

It has not taken long for this little bar to be discovered. Great scene, great music, excellent drinks. The first week they opened people were barely trickling in and now the place is often at maximum occupancy on the weekend nights. The scene: beautifully remodelled bar full of bookshelves, ecclectic books, 60s / 70s retro furniture, fancy glass ashtrays, long windows with flowing red curtains that overlook the Denton Square. There are chess sets and two dart boards. The walls are covered in concert posters or art that was clearly purchased at a thrift store / antique mall. Ernest Hemingway art, check. Buffalo head bust, check. This bar is above Andi's Bar and for newcomers a little hard to find, ask the staff. The music: This bar is partially owned by the local band Midlake, and I'd like to think they have a say in the music. You'll hear 60s, 70s, newer indie or psychedelic music as well and at a decent decibel. The drinks: Thus far I have only tried the holiday / fall drinks, which is the pumpkin martini (amazing), hot buttered rum, apple cider. Besides the extensive menu of cocktails the bartenders know most traditional drinks you probably couldn't get many other places around here. With the selection comes the prices. Drinks here run a lot higher than most places in Denton. The only drawbacks of this place is that is gets incredibly smokey AND often fills up to their max capacity on popular nights. I recommend if you want to check it out come in the afternoon when it's a bit slower (they have great hours! Currently they're open at 4pm). Great place to pick up a book or have a drink with a friend while it's still light out and the place is't a plume of smoke and loud drunken conversations. My wishlist for this place? This place is AWESOME. While the drinks are much pricier than the average place in Denton, the bartenders make it worth it. Watching them craft a cocktail is like watching an artist paint a masterpiece - meticulous and intentional. The bartenders are super knowledgeable and always willing to make recommendations and discourage you from ruining a perfectly good drink by subbing vodka for gin (I hate gin, but it's not so bad in some of their drinks). The atmosphere is pretty cool - but you have to keep an eye out for a place to sit! It's a very small venue but a very cool one! If you're into the whole speakeasy thing, check this place out. I walked in to Paschall Bar completely unprepared for what I found there; it is a completely comfortable place, staffed with friendly people, with a great variety of beverages to choose from. It is a must-visit place in Denton. I wandered in right at 4, when they opened, the only customer in the room (I was told to go early to avoid the rush and the packed room). The place is beautiful, like a men's club in London in the 19th century! Being from out of town, I visited a lot with Bartender Extraordinaire Kate, and settled in to enjoy the vibe for a while. I did not experience the smoke problem or the crowd problem. My time there was more akin to a traveler who happens upon an oasis. I wholeheartedly suggest that you try out Paschall Bar in the late afternoon, when you want to have great discussion with a good friend or something. read more

The music is at a perfect level so you're not yelling to have a conversation. Drinks are on the high end of Denton but worth it given the cool, unique atmosphere.
