Great sushi for a great price. I can't believe I've never been here when I was living in Berkeley. Now whenever I visit Berkeley I know where to have good sushi. Like most sushi places there are a lot of options on their menu. They have a photo of every main roll they make. Most places don't do that, so this is good if you rely heavily on what a roll would look like. Lion king roll is my absolute favorite. It comes out warm, and it's flavorful. I wish you could give half stars on Yelp. It was an okay place. Not everything was great but I might go again at some point. Ordered dinner through there last night: fried asparagus, asparagus rolls, shrimp tempura rolls, and veggie tempura rolls. The bad: the asparagus was AWFUL. It wasn't fried, but rather steamed it seemed. Then, for some reason, coated in salt. If you look at the photo that isn't condensation or anything but rather salt. Even though it wasn't fried the texture was good but even after trying to wipe off all the salt it was like eating a salt cube. The good: the rolls were great. The tempura on all the rolls were delicious. I loved the asparagus roll, it was nice and light and the shrimp tempura roll was yummy too. The prices were also good for what I got. read more

After driving for hours from Yosemite national park back to the city of San Francisco, all we needed was a decent Japanese restaurant for a quick lunch break. This Berkeley area Sushi joint offers wide variety of bento and sushi lunch box specials. I decided to try the Salmon Teriyaki served with Miso Soup, Veggies and California Roll. For $8, the portion was filling and it was freshly made. It was also delicious together with a chilled bottle of Sapporo. I admit I was skeptical when my friend suggested dinner here given the 3.5 star rating, but I was pleasantly surprised! There were so many enticing menu options, but we settled on the Volcano Roll and a rice wrap with tuna, salmon, and yellowtail, plus a garlic tuna hand roll, spicy tuna hand roll, and agedashi tofu. I was greeted kindly for dinner, and was seated immediately. I went for dinnertime a little after it opened, so I was the first one there for the evening. It is humble and homely as well -- not exactly a party atmosphere. I ordered nigiri sushi: sake, saba, hamachi and maguro. In total, it was about $16.50, in total -- not bad! The fish was a lot fresher than I expected (maybe because I arrived right when it opened for dinner), and it was thickly sliced with a generous amount of rice -- a much better meal than C U Sushi. I was surprised that this place does not have too many people for dine-in (take-out seems to do well), as C U Sushi, but I guess it is a bit further up north at Berkeley, and it is also surrounded by other restaurants that do rather well. End of an era. I know businesses are struggling but it's clear that this is now under new management. Ordered the same takeout as always. The food was always consistent until today which is my last time. The tempura was very good but everything else was mediocre. The dressing on the salad was totally watery and what little portion of chicken had no teriyaki sauce. And California rolls were half the size of what you used to get. Why go through the trouble of cutting corners and raising prices only to disappoint your customers? read more

I've been a very long time customer of Party Sushi and was initially bummed when they changed ownership just a few months ago. After trying them out, I am happy to say that the sushi has somehow gotten even better! I generally get the lion king and dragon rolls but also some fairly basic shrimp tempura rolls and salmon avocado rolls. One thing I really like about the new Party Sushi over the old one is that even though the rolls are the same size as before, they slice them a bit thinner - instead of six large pieces per roll, they give you eight smaller pieces. I like that a lot since each piece now tends to be bite-size instead of an overly large mouthful. read more

Had a great sushi dinner. We had the agedashi tofu, veggie tempura, tonkatsu ramen, lion king roll, veggie gyoza and the veggie combo. Party Sushi is one of my local ride or die places. On days when I feel tired, don't want to cook, or even when I want to reward myself when I don't have much time, this place is my go-to. I've tried quite a few things on the menu, some of my favorites include the Melting Albacore, the Golden Gate, and the Volcano (to name a few). The ambiance is great, the staff is really nice and attentive, the food is delicious and best of all, it's incredibly fast (you can order, eat and pay within 20-25 mins) so if you have an hour, you have plenty of time to enjoy your meal. I recommend their rolls with mango, but honestly there is so much to choose from that it is nearly impossible to be disappointed. Affordable and peaceful, it is one of North Berkeley's up and coming gems. read more

Chicken udon: It was pretty simple, with just udon, chicken, broccoli, and the classic dashi stock. However, it was pretty good regardless. Poor service and passable sushi. I've been to Party Sushi a handful of times and I've never been wowed, but on my most recent visit I experienced very poor service. The food at Party Sushi is acceptable and fairly priced. The quality of the salmon is quite good. However, the tuna that is served is "scrape". This is lesser meat left on the tuna that is ground into a paste. If you want proper quality tuna don't come here. The service on my last visit was particularly poor. The server forgot two items that I ordered. The first item was a bowl of miso soup and it was a busy night so I let that one go. That second item was sake. When our entrees came around, I still had not been served my sake so I asked the server. She told me she "thought" the bar told her that they were out of sake. If that had been the case, I sure would have liked to have known sooner so that I could have made a new selection. The table's soy sauce was empty and so when the entrees came, we asked for more. At least five minutes passed so I had to go to the bar and get soy sauce myself so that everyone could start eating. When the check came I had to tell the server to remove the miso soup that I had never been served. The server was not apologetic at any point in the night and rather seemed annoyed. The interior of the restaurant is modern. The furnishings are standard. On a quiet night, it is calm and comfortable. On a busy night, it is a bit cramped. I honestly can't recommend this restaurant, especially if you value tuna or good service. There are a number of superior sushi restaurants to go to in Berkeley. read more

Dan and I loved this restaurant when we arrived. The owners were very welcoming and personable. Although we have Japanese restaurants on Kaua`i and it's more like WHEN and IF they open it would help but the taste of their food is not the same as Party Sushi, sooooo delicious also the prices are great. Solid fish selection and freshness - don't be fooled by the name! [I totally understand though, I almost didn't go because of it]

I went for lunch. There were 3-4 other parties dining. They were located on Shattuck Ave/Virginia St in Berkeley. The sushi bar had 6 bar stools. There were about 8 tables, but could seat more if you separated the tables. They used real wooden chopstick, not disposable. There is a sign on the door and on the cash register that they accept credit cards for $10 minimum. I was offered the lunch menu and the picture menu of sushi rolls. I ordered a Shattuck Roll (Shrimp Tempura, Avocado, Cream Cheese) and a Salmon Skin with Green Onion Roll. The Shrimp Tempura was freshly fried with the tails on. Both rolls had sesame seeds sprinkled on top. The prices were reasonable and the sushi was decent. read more

No longer am I a sushi snob. I strip myself of the title, after lacking better judgment and actually eating at a place called "Party Sushi." Yes, I went there and now the whole Yelp community knows. My friend and I decided to come here for a quick dinner. After a cursory scan of the menu, I decided that this was the type of place where you order the rolls, not the nigiri (to be on the safe side). Unfortunately, all the rolls included mayo-mixed fillings (e.g. california roll, spicy anything), heavy sauces, and tempura-fried concoctions. I went against my better judgment and ordered this tempura concoction with avocado and eel. It was drowning in sauce, and that didn't even cover up the fishiness of the cooked eel. My friend had the beef teriyaki, which was super chewy and also drowning in sauce. Obviously, this is only a place for those who don't know real sushi and don't mind being fooled by the smokes and mirrors (aka deep-frying and sauces). I won't be back. read more

This is by far the best sushi I've tried here in the East Bay! Prices are great, and the size portions are just perfect! I'm always inclined to order the same stuff but I try to mix it up once in a while. For instance, last time I was here I ordered a bento box (with salmon teriyaki, miso, rice, salad and 4 pieces of a california roll). Anyways, I was starving and I decided to get an extra roll (you know, you want to really enjoy the wasabi, and four pieces isn't enough) so I got all that and for some crazy reason I was NOT able to finish my extra california roll. What a shame, but guess what? I took the leftovers home and an hour later I killed it. Been a frequent flyer of this place for the past 3 years and I have never been disappointed. P.S. You don't always have to be authentic to be delicious. Party Sushi holds true to its name. The best thing to order at this restaurant are the unique and crazy rolls. Sure, I am sometimes in the mood for traditional Japanese, but everyone has a craving for a deep fried roll every once in a while. Service is attentive and friendly. The party in the title definitely refers to the food and not the atmosphere, as the ambiance is quite pleasant and relaxing. The restaurant got remodeled recently. I had been here a few times before the makeover and it was not bad, but both the food and the restaurant itself are much better now. I tried a variety of rolls. Baked, fried, fresh, you name it. Atmosphere, hospitality, and food = amazing. A small family owned business run by a husband and wife. They normally are the servers of the restaurant. They are always very sweet and welcoming. The restaurant itself is spacious and makes you feel comfortable! The sushi chef is super friendly, approachable, and makes great conversation. He makes you feel like family! Party Sushi is pretty OK. They have some good rolls, but the prices are steep for the quality of sashimi they have. The unagi nigiri was pretty good. This is the sort of place to buy rolls drenched in sauce and mayonnaise since the fish quality isn't the star of the show (aka...buy the Americanized sushi rolls). The service was slow and we had to constantly ask for our waters to be refilled. They also forgot our sushi rice which (hint) wasn't real sushi rice, it was just a bowl of rice. **WOULD GIVE 0 STARS** Don't eat here. Service is mediocre, after eating there 1-2 times a week I still get shitty service. My final time going their Internet was down, which meant they didn't have a way to process credit card transactions. When the owner expressed that to me I explained I didn't have cash. As I was trying to tell him I could go get cash he quickly went to the next table to inform them. I overheard him agreeing with a white lady that it was ok for her to come back and pay for it. Now, mind you I was on my lunch break and didn't have much time to run to the bank at that time. My job is less than a block away from this place. I then thought, "ok good I can come back when I'm off to pay". Before I can make an agreement with the owner he asks to see my card. (Which was weird because I knew their machine was done) I gave it to him anyway. He had it for like more than a minute, so I went up to him to see what he was doing. I saw him writing my credit card information on a piece of paper. At this point I was LIVID. My tab was only $10 for him to be that extreme wasn't ok at all. Frustrated by it I asked him why he didn't give me the opportunity to come back to pay, but the other customer did. He then told me "she was a regular" but I guess he forgot I had been there at least once a week ordering the SAME EXACT THING. Him and the gentleman who makes the sushi said the reason for them writing it was to process my transaction later. But how am i supposed to know that thats all they'd use it for??? Though I'm always there they're still strangers to me. They weren't even apologetic about it all. They felt they had a right to write down my information which I'm sure isn't even legal. I snatched the paper with my credit card information and ripped it. I then walked to the nearest Safeway to get the exact amount of $$ I owed them. They tried to thank me profusely when I came back with the $$ but all I wanted to do was go off on them so I kept quiet. Their food isn't worth being treated less than a human. To me I've always gotten the racist vibe from them but this just validated for me. Every time I go there I have to just seat myself before they try to force me to make a to go order. Good sushi at good prices! I had the salmon teriyaki, and they smother it in delicious teriyaki sauce. I also had the betty boop, and it was amazing. MY FAVORITE SUSHI PLACE THUSFAR!! It is very affordable here and the sushi is great. If you like getting salmon sashimi, I would recommend getting the Sake Don bowls which have rice, sashimi and they come with a salad as well as miso soup. It is an awesome deal and the fish is very fresh. The workers are VERY friendly! The only downside is that it can sometimes take a while for them to make your order so definitely give yourself a lot of time to eat there or call in advance to get take-out. A HUGE selection of rolls, friendly wait staff (although not always the most attentive and sometimes forgetful - they're oftentimes seen chasing their cute kids around in the kitchen), and they throw in free yummy fried eggplant appetizer AND soba. Very eclectically decorated (EX: a giant betty boop greets you when you enter, handmade masks adorn the walls, there's a blow-up dragon on the ceiling, etc etc). Flower roll and swamp roll = YUM! Don't get me wrong,I love the food here, BUT THE SERVICE IS HORRIBLE. I used to come here very often with my friends but we stoped because (even though we loved their sushi) it was not worth being treated so badly. I guess there's only one waitress there because whenever we went she was there always. Since my friends and I are students she treated us as least priority because she knew we didn't have a lot of money which meant not much tips. Even if we came in earlier than other customers(big families) she would serve them first and literally forget about us, speak very rudely to us and spent as little time at our table as she could. One time she didn't even finish listening to my order, and in the middle of me talking to her just turned around and left. Another time, when we came in and the table was very sticky and dirty I very politely asked her to wipe it, she didn't say anything or react, just left, and came back and threw a wet tissue on my table without even saying anything. We have never been treated this badly and disrespectfully in our lives. We kept going back because we would give it another chance because we loved the food, but at some point we stopped because it was just too much disrespect. Our last visit, after everything she's done, we tipped her only 10% (she didn't even deserve that) and she watched us tipping her and then she told us very rudely to "look at the sign outside the door" and that "in the U.S. we are supposed to leave at least 15% tips" and to never come back if we wouldn't tip her that. She said "in the U.S" because she noticed that my friends and I were international students which was so disrespectful of her to say. So we listened to her and never came back. PLEASE hire someone who knows how to talk and treat customers (as she mentioned "in the U.S.") She deserves to get fired. And this place deserves a better waitress. read more
