This place holds a lot of memories for some. I had dined for breakfast a while ago, very packed and had great service. So choosing to visit again for diner, I didn't think twice. The food was decent for diner food and I got a great deal ordering a Dinner Special: Asiago Stuffed Gnocchi in a Sage Butter Sauce that came with a side salad and a slice of Apple Pie. My husband and my sister got the Buttermilk Fried Chicken and Buffalo Chicken Wrap. Their plates had generous amount of food, fries and enough to bring home. They said it was good. The problem was the service. For a slow evening, the service was very slooow. We were seated quickly, but when it came to ordering drinks and the food, it took forever. Our server was very friendly though and liked to struck up conversation, but it took so long for them to return to take our drink and food orders. Let's put it this way, we almost got up, paid for our drinks and left! Finally, nearing 30 minutes, our server came to take our food order. I think if we had a different server, this review would have gone in a different direction. The diner is very nice and clean in a classic diner style building. When you walk in, you are greeted by a case of delicious looking cakes, cheesecakes and pie. The host is was very friendly too. After you finish your meal and obtain the receipt, you walk up to the host to pay. I have been here once before... a year ago. My fiancé and her friend decided to meet her for lunch since we were in town for some business. I did not remember my experience from the last time but I agreed to go... well, I was neither impressed or dissatisfied. This place is, I hate to generalize, but a mediocre diner that has been around for a long time. Lots of locals and regulars here. Generally a warm, family feel to this place. The host and the wait staff are friendly and attentive. I would have been glad to give it a 4 star, of the food was a little better. Not horrible, but I guess better not expect the quality of a Sunday brunch at the Four Seasons or Hilton. But at the same time, I am not paying $35 for a buffet either. I tried the salmon benedict. It sounded great on the menu, but the hollandaise sauce was bit too bland. Hollandaise is hard to perfect, but it was good effort but ultimately a bit disappointed Salmon was poached well and with good consistency, not over cooked in so many places. We were on a 5 hour car trip to the Cape and we lucked out on this diner for our half-way-there lunch. The menu was diverse - we don't do Paleo but the dish looked so good we ordered it and it was amazing. The service was great as well. On our way back from our vacation in really bad weather, we stopped by again and got soup and sandwiches and it was just as delicious and welcoming as the first time. I had the meatloaf special and it was comfortingly well-made and filling. My wife had their edamame quinoa salad and enjoyed it. Our daughters had quesadillas, belgian waffles, and burgers - all were good. Especially good - the fresh-cut fries: nicely crisp exterior, soft and hot inside. Last time I was there, it was 30 minutes from waitress taking the order to food on the table - and the dishes were not tricky or labor intensive. Simple stuff. Eggs, toast coffee. We were out antiquing and visiting consignment shops today in Old Saybrook. We love diner food and there were lots of cars in the parking lot which usually means ... "good food here!" So we stopped in. We were warmly greeted right away and shown to a booth. Our waiter's name is Jeremy and what a kind young man; very respectful and polite with good manners. This diner has a GREAT menu with MANY delicious sounding meals to choose from. We got the Philly Steak Rolls and a Turkey Club sandwich. Both were excellent! Their fries were some of the best we've had. The coffee, eh, not the best I've had but the food made up for it. You should see the awesome desserts they have there!! Oh my gosh they looked mouthwatering delicious!! I can't eat sweets anymore but I should have gotten one anyway. So, I always thumb through the other reviews first just to take a look. I like to be as objective as possible. If you have allergies (as I ALSO DO), you have to make sure you know what and how to eat. I don't think it's fair that people complain about the service. There may be a language barrier or accent you aren't prepared for (I believe it's a Greek diner) but if you can't handle that in the United States, I'm not sure what to say. If you're looking for some expensive restaurant with unique options and delicasies, there are plenty of overpriced restaurants with brunches in the area you can try. HOWEVER, for a diner with DINER food, this place is amazing. We love breakfast and any time we come down to the shore, this is our place. We regularly skip the expensive brunches at the resorts where we stay, and choose this place instead. Portions are decent, cappuccino is great, and the food has NEVER disappointed. I was at this diner approximately a week ago for dinner with my wife. We both ordered a chicken dinner special. I took a salad, my wife cup of soup. The salad looked a little dry and wilted. Once we got home, about an hour later I started to get violently sick. Stomach pains so unbearable, throwing up violently. My wife took me to local ER. They gave me fluids after throwing up more. They said I had food poisoning. They said I should go home and rest and drink fluids. I called diner next and told them what happened. I left my name and number. No one called back ever. I have going there for a number of years and I thought, they would like to know about it. I talked to head server, Eric, who made nothing but excuses for the diner. Acouple years ago we did have a exceptionally unpleasant waitress on our first date but it was well worth it for the amount of jokes that have come from it. The service is just about the friendliest and most helpful around; the staff remembers their guests (and in a couple cases I overheard, remembers their regulars' usual orders)! The menu is plentiful and you can get pretty much anything in the menu at any time during the day, which is a huge plus in my book Bc often I do not want breakfast for breakfast, for example. Big parking lot and a handicap ramp right next to handicap parking. The menu is extensive so imagine your favorite restaurant menu and double or triple it. There will be something for you. We had breakfast on Sunday and had no trouble getting seated. Mrs. had eggs benedict and I had the chicken fried steak and eggs (with biscuits). I am currently sitting in another establishment after coming from Parthenon Diner due to the following experience: After a 3.5 hour ride on the trains up from NYC, we were determined to find a nice spot to settle for a quick lunch before walking around town. Note that this is NOT my first time visiting Old Saybrook, but I have not traveled west of the Walmart shopping center on Boston Post, north of the train station, east of Main/Boston Post, and not TOO far south on Main. This time however, we decided to travel west on Boston Post to this diner after discovering it on the train ride. After the long walk from the station, we arrived at about 2:00. We sat down and on first glance, the environment seemed alright, not too fancy, but average for a diner. We got started with just water, and then took a minute to look at the menus, and then our waiter began to take our order. My mother had called ahead of time to ask if they could accommodate gluten free and dairy free (we both have allergies). To our surprise, they stated that they had an entire menu just for gluten free and other allergies. When we got there, there were five items on this "menu", it was more like a list. I ordered a burger and asked to replace the potato salad on the side, since I have the dairy allergies. To my surprise, the waiter stated", Oh no! You can have it." Ummmm, so apparently, my waiter has fortune telling powers to tell me that even though I am allergic, I can still have it? He also seemed a little annoyed, which didn't help make a good first impression on us. When my mother asked if SHE could have it on the side instead of me, since SHE was already paying for it, the waiter said absolutely not and that he would have to charge us an extra $4.99. My mother asked if he was basically charging her twice, and stated that this was ridiculous. Then the waiter left without even asking how I wanted my hamburger done and became the cashier! First of all, why wasn't I asked how I wanted my burger cooked? Would the chief just made it however he felt like in the moment? Went for lunch while in the area with my wife and daughter. I had a chicken Caesar wrap with fries and coleslaw. My wife had the open faced turkey sandwich and my daughter had a chicken quesadilla. We started with the mac & cheese bites. Overall the food was average and that is not a bad thing, nothing to complain about and nothing to rave about. Price was fair. The only downside of our visit was the length of time it took for our food to come out. Folks who arrived and order a fair amount of time after us got their food before us. The waiter acknowledged the slowness and removed the cost of the drinks ( a coke and a seltzer) from the bill as way to try and lessen the impact.
