I found this place a bit too loud to have any real conversations, and I am pretty sure the bartender was making himself at home with the drinks. My friend already had a tab going and when I got there he told me to put my drink on his tab. When we were leaving he closed out his tab, which included my drink. A few minutes later the bartender came up to us saying we had four outstanding drinks...which wasn't possible because all of us had closed our tabs out at this point and all drinks were accounted for. My friend visiting from Chicago is a sweetheart and ended up paying (again), but I am positive we paid for more than we should have because someone had trouble keeping things straight behind the bar. read more

What a fantastic neighborhood hideaway this was! My long time friend works not far from there and she had never been there. Me, I'm from out of town and I felt right at home. The bartender was second to none in personality, conversation and service. Choices at the bar were plenty as were the pours. Prices were reasonable. The crowd was a mix of age but seemingly all professional types. We had Colombians, Israelis, regular Americans, and who knows what else, it was fun. It seemed like other folks at the bar were neighbors and easy to engage with. The bar is not big but surprisingly it seems to hold plenty. There is also an outdoor beer garden. Park bar serves no food but allows you to byo. I'd definitely enjoy returning here the next time I'm in New york! read more

In many ways this is that neighborhood cocktail bar everyone wants. Low key, great drinks with some regulars and real character. This is not an expense account bar, but it's not a dive bar either. It does not feel corporate and it is not over the top. The service is efficient and there is outside seating. We ordered 7 old fashions from Max and asked to split the bill amongst two cards. The bartender flipped us off and said "fuck you" because we tried to split the bill and then complained that we ordered a hard-to-make drink. "You ordered a difficult drink and want to split the bill, I'm not doing that fuck you" were the words. As a result of the disrespect we did not tip but still paid of course. A different bartender then came up to us and said we are to leave after the drink if we don't tip and he never wants us back. We told him the reason was we were flipped off. He called us liars and that it was a community bar and we aren't welcome (despite living down the block). Then before we finished our drink they had the security guards come make us leave. This to me is retaliation for not tipping and is illegal. They confiscated our drinks which we paid for. I think it is very fair to not tip when you have been flipped off by a bartender. The same bartender immediately left and started smoking outside. The other bartender who had kicked us out wasn't there to witness the situation but then proceeded to call us liars and clowns and made me go up to the bar so he could continue insulting me. We didn't talk back but the retaliation on not tipping at the verbal assault was shocking. read more

I love Park Bar. It's an amazing neighborhood bar with a crew of loyal regulars but it also has a dynamic element of new people likely coming through Union Square just for the evening. The atmosphere is a 30's & up vibe, with a great selection of beers and liquor, as well as great music that is perfect for the scene whether it be hip hop, 70's disco, house music, classic rock or whatever. The massive mirror opposite the bar is amazing , the benches and the row of windows next to the street are amazing, and the decorations, which I assume are personal to the owners, give the bar the perfect amount of character. But the best part of Park Bar is the people from the regulars, to the newbies that make every night unique to, most importantly, the great bartenders. From James (the best bartender I've ever met- in drinks and personality), who sadly now has moved from New York (he has been missed), to Carlos (I love his Latin flavor and fun outgoing personality), Jaq (she is so sweet), Bill (the coolest customer around) and Julian (always smiley and lively). They all their unique personalities but are all so fun. They all make amazing drinks but consistently the best martinis I've ever had. They put the most expensive steak house martinis to shame. Finding a calm bar near USQ where you can actually hear the other person speak is no easy feat, yet Park Bar offers just that. It's on the smaller side, and is a little bit sterile in its design - but is perfect if you want somewhere that is t jam-packed with people. I've only been to Park Bar when it's half empty. And I like it that way. Talk to the friendly 'tenders, request some music on their iPods, have conversations with good friends and sip on some Scotch. Stare at the big-ass painting, argue about whether it's boxing or kick-boxing or some other violent sport, and whether the dude is trying to knee the other dude in the crotch. A win-win debate. Apparently some of the drinks here aren't that good & the bartender that evening was not kind to my friend's gay pal (you'd think someone working for tips in NYC would be nice to EVERYONE since who knows who's got that tip money & gay folks in Manhattan aren't exactly paupers). Maybe it's just the Tuesday night guy? I don't know. The other staff was fine. It's very dark so if you're not having a good hair day, you won't have to feel overly self-conscious. They also have nice convenient hooks for your coats, purses, etc. Space is at a premium so you won't want to have large gatherings here but a small, intimate environment this is. It can also get loud so keep that in mind. Overall, it was okay but I'm not a fan of places where staff is being discriminatory against folks. read more

Park Bar is reminds me exactly of Black Door in the Flatiron area, with the same type of dark interior, tight and semi-crowded ambiance, and similar pricing on drinks ranging from wine to beer. The entire layout of the bar is practically the same, though I think Black Door may be slightly larger and perhaps a little less noisy. Service for the most part seems good, though I think it falls apart when it becomes a little too crowded or rowdy. At the very least, the drinks are stiff and during happy hour are reasonably priced. Bathrooms are small as hell here, where one might actually have to lean against the toilet (or stand on top of it) in order to open the door. Some architectural genius thought it would be funny to have the door swing from the inside rather than the outside. I'm sure the same genius thought of this place after visiting Black Door 10 blocks north. read more

Noisy to the extent that I'm sure the employees incur permanent hearing damage once they have worked there for a week or more. Stopped by for a quick drink at this bar while waiting for some people. Small intimate bar that's not too fancy or divey with some bar seating up front and small tables in the middle and edges. They don't seem to have a draft list (just bottles from what I could tell), so ordered one of their bottled IPAs ($7). Quick turnaround from the staff as they come around collecting bottles and other odds and ends fairly quickly. Not the greatest price point but around what you would find in the neighborhood. Park Bar is a small, dark watering hole hidden on the dullest block that surrounds Union Square Park. The crowd is definitely a bit older than at many bars with most patrons in their mid- to late-30's. I found the Saturday evening bunch a bit corporate for a non-workday. The bar is cozy and romantic. Conversing is made simple by the low music volume. The unfortunate lack of culinary offerings is a disappoint, though, as Park Bar could benefit from some upscale bar food. Was the second stop of many on a Friday night during the beginning of winter time.  We walk in, pretty dark inside which I guess was fine but not the greatest.  It was pretty busy so we sat down on a bench near the front of the Bar which was fine but we realized the WINDOWS WERE OPEN. The outside temp was 20, what were they thinking.  I mean we had coats on and it gets warm in the bar but why would all of the windows be open? The beer options were fine but I could not understand why they had the windows open, it was delusional.   Overall: Seems like a tight place to grab night cap but if they keep their windows open again, I'll probably not go in. read more

I have been to park bar many times and my impression about the place was good until last night. I had the worst experience in any bar or restaurant in NYC. I walked in last night at 3 am with a friend and we had couple drinks at a small table away from the bar. At 4 am they put the light on, no last call was made by the staff, the bouncer stared to kick out people in a very rude way and screamed on every individual "get the Fu** out". My friend rushed to the bathroom before they close and this guy came screaming at my face "get the Fu** out, it's 4:01 and we close at 4 am". I'm so disappointed by the behavior of the staff, we didn't even get to finish our drinks. Does anyone work there understand what is hospitality?! LAST TIME to this place. read more

The best part of the bar is the atmosphere. It is small and cozy (especially on the snowy day when I visited) with dark wood furniture and floors. There furniture is creative with a miniature bar/stalls in the middle and a wooden bench running along the window. The prices are fine for the area. The cocktails we ordered were fine but a bit weak and were not served in the correct vessel. There were not any house specialty cocktails or particularly unusual beers and wines. It seemed like a pleasant place to have a drink if you just want a staple beverage. We were able to hold a conversation without having to yell over the music. I came around 4pm on a Friday. The bar was pretty crowded but my friends and I were able to find a little area to chill at. Drinks were a fair price given the location. Slowly but surely becoming my go-to bar in the Union Square area. I actually didn't even know it was called Park Bar until very recently. It's always chill, never too crowded, they have great music (particularly, a lot of Michael Jackson), and the alcohol selection is decent and relatively cheap compared to other bars in the area. NOTE: there are no draft beers, but the bottle selection is pretty good, and they have a few rotating seasonal beers along with the staple domestic beers. The clientele is incredibly hard to pinpoint, since it's a very random mix of fratty young professionals, all the way to extreme hipsters to yuppie Chelsea residents. That being said, the clientele is never too in-you-face to ruin your experience and it's never been a problem for me. The place itself isn't terribly big, but it's incredibly low-key, given the location. Bartenders are always attentive and very quick with the drinks. They don't have anything very fancy or innovative in terms of cocktails or mixed drinks, but they'll give you something strong and delicious. In all, the offerings and the space aren't particularly unique or outstanding, but overall performance is just consistent and solid. I highly recommend Park Bar for first dates or small groups, just because you know what you're getting and there's not much of a chance of things going wrong. Definitely one of those places where you can have good conversation, go to a bar without spending too much money, while still avoiding the drudgery of staying in your apartment. I met Katie there at 7pm on a really hot night in June. I had a Stella and she gave me back the Banksy book I had lent her. This was two weeks after she told me she wasn't "feeling it" on our first date. I caught up with Jo over Dewars rocks in the early spring. Jo's best friend was an ex from many days past. We had our second date at Park Bar. I was probably just entering my Dewars rocks days, so it's safe to say that's what I was drinking. I met Softball Stacy after work there last summer. When I suggested Park Bar she said that was also what she was thinking. Softball Stacy cooked me dinner once. I bought a bottle of wine that we never got around to opening. One night at Park Bar, I developed a screenplay I never got around to writing. That same night, I saw a woman I never got around to talking to. The bartender I knew at Park Bar no longer works at Park Bar. There were many times during the late-90's when I would enter Park Bar when the sun went down and would leave Park Bar when the sun came up. Kind of like that song by The Specials. Super chill place - just outside of Union Squate, without the irritating hipster crowd. I happened in here with a friend on a Saturday night, from around 9:30 til midnight and the clientele changed dramatically from the artsy chic to nearly empty to the club era getting a quick drink before beginning their meatpacking club adventures. The drinks are well priced and well served, with an attentive and knowledgable bartender. It can get a little packed but there was too for a seat at all times. A little louder than my liking, but there is an effective music change based on majority clientele at any given time (kind of impressive). *Bonus: I signed my credit card statement after closing out at the end of the night but forgot to take my credit card out of the clip. The bartender actually ran half a block to catch up with me to give me my card back. THAT, my friends, is customer service. read more
