Great food, good service, great environment. We showed up at the Paradox Grill before 11 am, and asked about lunch. They were just finishing with the Breakfast crowd. The nice young waiter took us to a nice balcony with two tables, and said it would probably be 20 minutes before the kitchen opened back up for lunch. (We were fine sitting on the balcony enjoying the view.) We ordered ice teas and just relaxed after the drive down Unaweep Canyon. We both ordered the "Street Tacos". Now I have eaten street tacos for decades, and if streets were lined with gold, these might be the tacos they'd serve. Everything was perfect. The pulled pork was smoked and succulent, the carne asada was moist and flavorful, and the wild mushroom--yep tacos hongos!--were inventive and delicious. They piled them up like they assumed we were going to require a considerable energy expenditure in the near term. In other words, great good, and great portions at prices a resort in the middle of the desert needs to charge to turn a profit. I need a reason to pass through Gateway again. read more

We stayed at the resort for two nights. The resort is a whole separate review, so this only reflects the Paradox Grille. The restaurants decor is definitely unique. It feels a bit outdated, but it's what makes this place its own kind of unique. I enjoyed it It's unfortunate how unstaffed this place is because it has a lot of potential. When we were here, there was only one waitress serving everyone. We felt so bad. But she still made her rounds and got us our food, just not as fast as we'd want it sometimes We thoroughly enjoyed our breakfast! It wasn't always consistent. Sometimes we would order the same items, and different things came out with it. One instance, we tried some grain bowl and the first day it came with two pieces of toast, one with jelly and the other with peanut butter, but the next day both pieces of toast had peanut butter. Minor, but something you'd notice When we first received the breakfast menu, each side of the menu displayed the same card, even though my partners had different items. Just small things that added up to show the kitchen and staff maybe weren't that organized. The worst part of the restaurant is when we ordered food to go to eat in our rooms. We ordered two burgers, and I honestly thought the kitchen heated up a Big Mac. It tastes exactly like one, and even the buns had those sesame seeds like McDonald's. It was absolutely terrible It's really unfortunate, because the place has so much potential, but you can almost feel that the kitchen doesn't care. read more

We have come to Paradox for lunch a handful of times per year for several years. The food has always been tasty, but our meal today was on a whole new level! The restaurant started this new menu just two days ago, and we are already excited to come back to try more of it! I ordered the Elk and White Bean soup. It was tasty and hearty, yet light. Wow I am staying here and came in with low expectations given it's at the resort but they blew my expectations out of the water! Their complimentary focaccia bread and truffle butter was AMAZING. And the grilled chicken on my salad was cooked to perfection. I also saw someone with the short rib and it looked and smelled incredible- getting that tomorrow!!! This is your main place to eat at Gateway Canyon Resort. We had good service. Not overly friendly, but they did their job just fine. I really enjoyed the bean/cheese dip with the appetizer we got! The tacos have wonderful homemade tortillas...the meat was okay on them, but the tortillas made my mouth water! The fish with the fish and chips was good and beer battered. The fries were okay...but kind of mushy and not my favorite. The kids Mac n cheese was delicious even though my kid didn't eat it. He did enjoy their fruit cup which was good fresh fruit. We visited the upstairs game room after lunch and it was nice. There was a pool table, two shuffle boards, a box of games, and darts. We also ordered dinner from here and did takeout so we didn't have to pay the delivery fee. The onion rings were good and I liked the dipping sauce. My husband said the burger was good. I had the Cajun shrimp Mac n cheese which honestly I would have been happier to just order the kids Mac n cheese and eat that. (Didn't really love it). I had the pineapple upside down cake with salted Carmel ice cream. It's not quite your traditional cake because they add Carmel sauce to it, but I enjoyed it and the ice cream. Wow, what a pleasant surprise. We wanted to go for a drive through Unaweep canyon and happened upon this pretty neat resort. It was kind of slow being as it's the middle of winter but the staff was super friendly and welcoming. Our waitress was very kind and talkative and happy to tell us all about the area. The smoked brisket tacos were incredibly tender while being packed full of flavor. Both salsas complimented the meat really nicely. They also topped them with Cotija cheese which happens to be my favorite cheese. My husband got the carnitas tacos which were equally as tasty. Along with all the amazing flavor, the portions were also very generous. I could hardly finish two but obviously couldn't let the third go to waste. If you're in the area, definitely check out this hidden gem. read more

Tried the cheese curds and they were good, but did make me think I needed marinara. Guess sometimes cheese curds can be a little like glorified mozzerela cheese sticks. Thats on me...and not to take anything away from this dish here which is very good. The scenery from here is amazing and that's why you would find yourself in this part of colorado...there's not much else. Also had the cuban sandwich and it was very good. We had a fabulous vegan dinner here. The menu is diverse with several good vegan choices. And the kitchen will improvise to suit your diet. So, we ordered with the able assistance of a staff member. She was most helpful! Then the food came. It was spectacular. Vegan all the way and delicious. And, waitress keep checking on us and getting us more ice tea and water - important here due to the heat. Highly recommended for vegans and vegetarians! Dine with pleasure here. We ate for dinner two nights in a row because it was our only option. Well I wish there was another one anything, for such a high-end resort you would think the food would be edible. This place is absolutely beautiful the food is horrendous. To pay $350 a night for a room and be forced to eat sandwiches doesn't work for me. The chicken sandwich was completely raw. The night before I ordered steak Frites medium rare of course it came out well done. Tomorrow we leave here and will stop to have dinner somewhere else. I'm hungry! Get a new chef! read more

If I could give a rating for food and service separately, I would.I ordered the Cuban sandwich and my wife order the chicken and Brie sandwich. The sandwiches were excellent. We then ordered coffee. It was $10 for two small cups of the most tasteless coffee I think I've ever had. A service on the other hand was abysmal. We weren't even sure if our server was still working there by the time we left. We had to ask two different people for our bill and our quick sandwich and cup of coffee took nearly two hours and cut into the time we had to spend at the resort that day. If they had been busy, I would have understood. But they were perhaps three tables with people eating in the entire restaurant. We live close by, in Grand Junction, so we will likely return but pack a picnic lunch if we are on a tight schedule. read more

Ta-daaa! Such a beautiful setting. This brave little restaurant sits at the end of a gorgeous canyon and amidst a VERY expensive hotel property (rooms are $500+.) But the Paradox doesn't get pressured into pricing their menu at the same, lofty levels. My friend and I shared a kitchen greens salad, all fluffed high with freshness and showing color with very fresh tomatoes, cukes and carrot curls for lunch. The dressing was the house specialty - a citrus splash of goodness. Feeling the Western vibe, I fully enjoyed the bison chili. It was sparked with hot chilis. The chef showed a bit of gold by including a bit of pozole, and a bit of contrast in the bowl by throwing in a few black beans. Delicious! My friend had a quasadilla brimming with shredded bison meat, guacamole, sour cream, white queso, and a few veggies. It was served warm, and the tortilla was perfectly crisped with oil. Also on the property is a car museum. The place shows like a desert botanical beauty, with succulents and cacti and wispy grasses. Further down the road is the Gateway corral where magnificent horses are available for an amazing ride into the hills before or after a meal at the Paradox Grille. read more

This IS your destination in Gateway unless you're visiting the car museum or are planning on spending some cash at the resort's restaurant. This is an old style whitewashed diner that they've updated with a few touches to make it look more like a fifties style diner. I can imagine it turning in to a raucous biker bar at night, but I was there on a quiet Saturday afternoon and it was very mellow. I had a burger and fries and it tasted just fine and really hit the spot after the long ride from Grand Junction. If you have a pulse and are not a vegetarian you've had this meal. The ingredients come in on a big truck and are cooked and assembled before your eyes. The guy behind the counter noticed my riding gear and asked me what I was riding. Boy was he shocked to see my trusty little scooter parked out front. It was my Pee-Wee Herman moment. read more

The fantastic server recommended the margarita, which was great. They were made with housemade mic and were perfectly bitter and sweet. The pork wing app was amazing. Onion rings had a little too much breading and were a bit soggy. The burger was smoky and delicious. The brisket was sweet and so tender. Mac and cheese and baked beans on point while the fries were so-so. We got the pecan pie to go and it was delicious even 4 hours later. We will return again! read more

Resort is beautiful we should have walked the lobby to check it out because we only came for lunch. A great destination for a motorcycle day trip from Grand Junction. Very unique menu with a few common items with slight twists. My wife had the reuben Buffalo sliders on pretzel buns which had a very different flavor but were delicious and tasted fresh. Our experience was that the fried oysters were soggy and had the flavor of canned tamales. The cilantro salad dressing had zero flavor, which was the same for the ranch dressing.
