We spent one week at this hotel recently. I give it a SOLID three stars. I read hundreds of hotel reviews before selecting this one. The bottom line is that it is nearly impossible to get everything you want in a hotel. I have to say that Paradisus for the most part met my expectations. I will also gladly recommend the hotel to family and friends. We purchased the general all inclusive package.
THE GOOD
-The staff are extremely friendly and always of service. From our check in to food and room service, all staff were professional and courteous.
-The hotel is not only big, but it is long, which means you have access to a long stretch of beach.
-Buffet food is always fresh, full of flavor and area is kept clean and food is replenished in a timely manner.
-The Vacation Club Melia staff are friendly, not at all pushy if you aren't interested in joining vacation club.
-The decor and and the overall ambiance of the hotel is stunning! I enjoyed walking through the main pyramid and smelling the soothing aromas, hearing the calming zen like music, and appreciating the unique decorative pieces throughout the hotel. I also enjoyed hearing the fountains and the ocean from my room everyday.
-If you want to relax in the comfort of your room, order room service! We planned a day trip to Isla Mujeres and opted for room service for breakfast. Within 30 minutes of ordering we received our order. The presentation was nice and the food was delicious!
THE ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT
-The policy for reserving beach chairs either needs to be enforced or thrown out altogether. If you go out at 630 am to reserve chairs, nearly all are taken! The policy is such that if you are not at your lounge chair for 30 minutes staff can remove your personal items so that other hotel guests can use the chairs. Make up your mind Paradisus management!
-The kids club feels like an afterthought. On paper, there is a nice, balanced schedule of activities, but we did not choose to leave our kids there for several reasons: 1) kids 5-12 are lumped together in the same not so big room with about 6 activity/toy stations and a jumper. I walked in twice. There were 2-3 staff there with as many as 40 children!
2) There is an iffy system of identifying children who are part of the kids club for outdoor activities--there was an outdoor treasure hunt activity one afternoon. When I asked staff how children from the kids club would be tracked as they walked through the hotel grounds I was told that the kids were identified by paint on their face. How about a matching bracelet for kids and parents?
3) A majority of activities are indoors, and the kids zone room is dark with no windows. We are in Cancun! Have activities outside! There seems to be a large underutilized space where the playground is. Put a big palapa over this area and create a fun outdoor space with a water tables, water slides, etc so kids aren't enclosed in the existing claustrophobic space.
-As big as the hotel's oceanfront is, you can't enjoy swimming in the ocean as the ocean is rough. The red warning flags were up the entire week we were at the resort. Based on tripadvisor reviews the red flags have been up since May. Not fault of hotel..its Mother Nature..but something for you to consider if you enjoy swimming in the ocean or you have small kids.
TIPS
1. Lounge chairs- have someone in your group reserve chairs in the early am--as early as midnight for the next day. Place Paradisus towels, cheap flip flops, beach bags on your chairs.
2. Make reservations at Fuego and Mole! These restaurants, in particular, have amazing food. Be curious! Try food you'd typically never order and you'll be surprised at how delicious every item on these menus are. (Make reservation the day before)
3. Go to the Market Grill restaurant for lunch. The restaurant has an ocean view, no reservations are required, and the food is fresh, healthy and made to order. The kids loved the pasta and pizza. The adults enjoyed the salads, the shrimp skewers and the sides.
4. Be persistent! We purchased the junior oceanfront suite. The room we were given was in the 3rd pyramid and had a view of the roof of the Market Grill restaurant. After seeing this we asked the hotel staff for a complete ocean view room, as we had purchased. The hotel management offered us other rooms but these had issues as well- one room had outdated light fixtures and decor, the other had a leaky air conditioner. Needless to say, we ended up staying in the room with the partial ocean view for one night. The next day we were given another room in the 3rd pyramid which had a complete ocean view and updated furniture, fixtures. For the inconvenience the hotel management made dinner reservations to 2 restaurants for us.
5. Go to breakfast early! Anytime after 10 am you'll have to wait in line to get seated, wait in line for the omelet station, and the juice bar...and lines get long read more
