The WORST vacation experience of my life! My husband and I have always loved Cancun and have basically come to Cancun for every major vacation. We went to Riu Caribe in 2010 for our very 1st vacation together, then again to Riu Cancun later on, then in 2013 to Riu Caribe again and then Riu Penninsula, the newest one, in 2014 for our honeymoon, and again in 2016 when we found out I was pregnant with our daughter. Needless to say, we LOVE our Riu chain because it guarantees us the same level of quality service wherever and whenever we go. This time around, everyone we knew recommended this hotel and since we were bringing our 20 month old daughter and my parents with us, they wanted to try something new, which brought us here. BIG MISTAKE. HUGE!
First of all, we booked all-inclusive, not "semi-inclusive" and here they inform you if you want certain amenities, you have to pay more. So in essence, it's not all-inclusive. It's we lore you here and then you have no choice but to pay more if you want to have a good time. Otherwise, staff doesn't care if you love it or hate it. They just care about selling you their CLUB MELIA time shares. When we booked, they promised us a free couples massage. When we arrived, in order to get it, we had to sit through a 90 minute time share presentation to get it. They're much more focused on their time share selling than anything else and they're not even good deals. Even if I was in the market for a timeshare, I'd recognize it's not a good deal.
Upon arrival, we discovered the lobby has no A/C at all which coupled with heat and humidity is a constant recipe for disaster. Basically, any time my husband steps out of any restaurant or room with a/c, by the time we get to any other location he is drenched in sweat. I don't even sweat that much normally and I find myself covered in it. Yes, I must admit the lobby is beautiful...but beauty over comfort? Nope! Not when humidity is so unbearable that sunblock literally leaks off before you get to the pool.
It gets "better." The room they put us in had an a/c that barely worked. We were waking up in a puddle of sweat each morning. We told the front desk about it. Think they cared? Nope! Usually the business of hospitality is hospitable...they must've missed that lesson. Only on the 3rd day did they move us to a different room. Not an easy task to re-pack 2 adults and a toddler, but in order to get another room and working a/c, the daunting task was worth it. Also, the room was so dirty that the sheets had stains, the comforter was ripped & feathers were falling out of it, and the bathroom accommodations were so dirty that I had to resort to washing myself and the baby with washcloths in the sink to avoid getting into that awful shower. It was only when we got relocated that I was able to bathe us both and finally feel like things were looking up for a split second.
Food and entertainment are the reasons everyone recommended this resort. Well okay, specialty restaurants must be reserved the day before and they are pretty good...but your other meals are the buffet, which is beyond terrible and has no variety. Literally same horrible food day in and day out. In comparison with our beloved Riu chain, you can't even compare it. Their buffet has an abundance of food, a different themed night every day, and great options for every meal. Their specialty restaurants are not as amazing but in the grand scheme of things, I'd rather have average specialty restaurants and normal meals and variety of choices for all other meals. Entertainment? What entertainment? There's a schedule for entertainment. They have an app that tells you when things are happening. We've been here almost a week and I have yet to see a single activity take place. Their shows are set up around the pool in the heat and humidity and they're average at best for shows I've seen at Riu or really any other resort I've stayed at my entire life. My parents are also not impressed and they felt the Riu wasn't up to their standards before this trip. Now we all wish we stayed there or didn't go on vacation at all.
Beach? I guess I can't fault the hotel for the seaweed brought on by global warming and the fact that there are small waves, but getting into brown colored wave, seaweed infused water doesn't really scream paradise to me. So you'd think the pool would be pleasant as an alternative. I guess when you assume things, you know what it leads to...pool water is too warm, no activities going on, and little shade to hide from the blazing sun.
In summary, the main things people usually go on vacation to a paradise style resort for - beach, relaxation, fun, and an enjoyable experience - do not exist here. What does exist here is an old, dirty resort with staff that don't care to help you or correct any issues you have coupled with terrible dining and entertainment resulting in utter boredom. Do NOT come here for your vacation. We cut our trip to get out of here asap. read more
