Paradisus is an all-inclusive mega resort located on that beautiful stretch of beach in Mexico called Cancun, better known as heaven. When I say mega resort, don't get the wrong idea; it may be really (REALLY) big, but it is amazingly intimate once you get inside - Assuming you opt for the Royal Service, but we'll get to that in a bit.
This was my first time at an all-inclusive, and to be honest I was a bit nervous about the whole idea. For me a fun vacation is picking a spot on a map (usually somewhere in Europe), hopping on a plane, and walking as many miles as my body can before my feet give out or I'm too buzzed to go on (looking at you Amsterdam). It's not that I don't like the beach, I totally do! But growing up down the Jersey Shore; I've done as much beach-bumming that I care too, now there's only so much lounging around I can take. This place had so much to offer, I knew that I could never possibly get bored.
There's one big preface I have to mention before I really get into too many details of this place:YOU HAVE TO SIGN UP FOR THE ROYAL SERVICE. Seriously. I can understand why some people who visit this place have some mixed feelings about it, but I guarantee that anyone who's stayed in the Royal Service section will give it nothing but 5 stars. Here's why:
To begin the Royal Service has its own check in lobby. In this lobby you will find team of staff members who great you with a hot towel for your face, and, if you're so inclined, a bottle of champagne. Did I fail to mention that the booze in this place flows like water? OK well now that we have that straight, yes, you start with a bottle of champagne right off the bat. The staff will then happily whisk you away to your room located in Tower 5, the private (no one under 18 allowed) residence block. If you have planned ahead, you will have already asked for an ocean view room (a bit more, but 110% worth the price), on a high floor. Yes this place is shaped like a pyramid so you lose a bit of square footage the higher you go, but the views of the beach are so much more dramatic from the 7th floor as opposed to the 2nd or 3rd. If you have not opted for an ocean view, it doesn't really matter what floor you're on the view will be of the golf course and the main road - not bad but nothing like the ocean side. The rooms are pretty standard, one bed (or two if you're just friends), basic cable that you won't be watching and a nice balcony to drink on and watch the waves break on the beach. The bathroom isn't bad; the showers have enough power to wash the sand and salt off, and there is a bidet which I found very European, and very funny as I have the same sense of humor as a child. There is a mini fridge in each room, STOCKED with FREE beer, snacks, and most importantly water. Water? That's the most important thing? Yes, you see everywhere you go in this resort people will be tripping over themselves to get you a drink, so when you wake up in the morning sunbaked and hung-over, the cold water in the fridge is a lifesaver.
OK so you've found your room now what? Time to hit the beach! Remember earlier when I said that I wasn't a huge fan of lounging around on a beach etc etc? Well this beach has something that Jersey doesn't (unless your super rich), drink and food runners. This beach is SO much bigger than the neighboring hotels; the sheer size of it makes them look cheap by comparison. OH YEAH and you got the Royal Service right? So you have a private beach that the other people at the hotel can't come to (private pool and private outdoor bar as well), look at you go fancy man. The rest of the day involves lying under a thatched roof, drinking beer / frozen (peach is the best) daiquiris, and listening to the waves hit the sand. If you do want to swim, the water is really clear and warm, but the rip tides can be very (VERY) strong, so be careful (especially after that third drink).
When you inevitably get hungry, the same guy who brings you drinks will bring you food. Here is what you get: the guacamole is to be had every day - it's that good. The burger isn't bad, but burgers as a rule are not great outside the states. If you like seafood person the shrimp tapas are pretty good too. I won't get too into the food of the resort in this review, but to sum it up in a few words, it's basically cruise ship food. I get why, they have 5000 guests. There's no way you're going to feed them all cheaply - this place was by no means overly expensive and so I'm not complaining. People eat a lot on vacation, all-inclusive resorts have overhead, its basic economics - the booze is free stop being so annoyed that the croissants are not fluffy enough.
This resort is absolutely worth coming to, but again do yourself a favor at opt for the Royal Service (did I mention that yet). You won't be disappointed, as you'll find the biggest and best hotel in Cancun with an amazing staff that will take care of anything you could possibly want or need. read more
