If you want good food, relaxation, and activities in a luxurious place, AVOID RIU KUKULKAN and other "RIU" branded hotels and resorts!!!
I have never felt more ripped off by a resort in my life. We chose this place thinking we were treating ourselves to a luxury all-inclusive experience, and instead, we got a week of frustration, mediocrity, and outright deception. The only redeeming quality here has been the friendly service staff, who unfortunately are propping up what is otherwise a total scam of a resort.
Let's start with the food: it's hit or miss, but mostly miss. We paid a premium to stay here, and yet lunch consists of crusty, dried out hot dogs and burgers that wouldn't pass for decent cafeteria food. The room service menu is laughable, featuring delights such as a soggy "tofu sandwich on brown bread." Yum? The so-called "Steak House" was one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. My husband ordered a NY strip, rare to medium-rare. What arrived was a well-done piece of inedible leather. Sides were cold, bland, and sad. The "pecan brownie" dessert? It was literally a repackaged Little Debbie Cosmic Brownie (sans sprinkles). The Asian restaurant, "Sunakku," was no better. Their "Korean fried chicken bao bun" tasted like uncooked flour wrapped around stale breading masquerading as chicken. The sauce was completely devoid of flavor. The buffet food is a low-effort cycle of mostly the same lukewarm slop, and the Italian restaurant made both me and my spouse physically sick. There were some dishes at the buffet and a couple of the restaurants that were okay, but by no means was any of it good or impressive.
And don't come here expecting top-tier entertainment, unless your idea of fun is watching the staff perform a choreographed 4-minute dance over and over like it's a middle school talent show. Daily activity offerings include a low-budget Kahoot trivia game about the hotel itself... Yes, really. It also seems that at least several of the daytime activities staff also moonlight as part of the nightly entertainment, and it's painfully obvious they are not professional performers.
The pool area music is its own form of psychological warfare. If you've ever wondered what it would be like to listen to "Uptown Funk," "Happy," and "Give Me Everything" on an endless loop, you're in luck. That's pretty much the playlist, sprinkled with a few other overplayed Top 40 songs from 2012. It's like they made a playlist in the early Obama years and never looked back. It's not nostalgic, it's just lazy and obnoxious. The music is played so loudly that it's impossible to get away from.
Overall, the whole place reeks of corporate branding and fake energy, as if they're desperately trying to distract you from how little they actually offer. Meanwhile, basic requests--like getting the king bed we booked and paid for--were only granted after we were forced to pay for a room upgrade just to check in. After talking with other people in our group as well as numerous other hotel guests, it really seems like they are pulling a bait and switch type of scam where you are forced to upgrade /pay more in order to access the room you thought you were supposed to get in the first place (and had already paid for).
Let's talk about the advertised boogie boards, snorkeling, and kayaking... none of which were actually available at this resort. After asking a dozen different staff members and getting a dozen different answers, we were finally told that these are at a sister hotel miles away. No transport provided, despite being told otherwise. Our friends tried to go there and were met with even more lies: no access to amenities, no towels, and a return shuttle that took 90 minutes to arrive. When sharing our concerns and frustrations with the front desk staff, we were simply met with "you can take the public bus to get there" and "I understand your frustrations," but with no effort whatsoever to make things right.
And then there's the beach. I understand seaweed is seasonal, but what isn't seasonal is the resort's failure to maintain the beachfront. One day we watched them pile the rotting seaweed into plastic bags and leave them to fester in the sun. The next day, the stench of rotting organic matter was so strong we had to leave the pool. It smelled like fermented cabbage and roadkill.
Bottom line: this place is all about appearances and profits, not hospitality. They're happy to take your money, upsell you, and make empty promises, but they did absolutely nothing to rectify any of the issues we've experienced.
I wouldn't come back here if it were free. If you're considering staying here, do yourself a favor and don't. There are far better places for far less money. This was an expensive mistake, and we're leaving more exhausted than when we arrived. read more
