Hey I'm no Professional Reviewer or anything like that but Paradise Poochie is the place that you go to buy your cat and dog friends "good quality" food and health items. If you are an 'Ego' based individual who has to have the store clerks running up to cater to your every need and can't understand a business protecting itself in these times, then right - go shop at Petsmart or Petco and pay a higher price for a less quality product. George and Debbie (owners) care about the pets that they serve. You can ask questions and get honest answers at Paradise Poochie .... but heck don't believe me ... I have been a costumer for just about 10 years and have alway had a great experience, they carry a good variety of good quality dog food and always been treated great, everyone that works there have always been friendly and helpful. Sometimes you just have to Stop the Press! You shove all those drafted reviews aside because you just were at an establishment and you must immediately share your experience. Usually it's because you've had a phenomenal meal and must share your over-the-top-cool experience with tour Yeeps & peeps in hopes they'll get excited too. Unfortunately this isn't one of those cases. I want to preface this by saying everyone already is aware of how much time & income I spend not only on rescue causes but my own furbabies. It all goes to the dogs...literally not figuratively. lol They also know how much I support local and small businesses wherever I am. I was enjoying a tea on the patio of an eatery and noticed on the GPS that a business I planned on patronizing seemed only a few blocks away. Excited but confused I called the business to verify their hours and location and was told indeed that was their address but it was 2 blocks in the opposite direction. They said I could even walk there so they were definitely expecting me. Upon arrival I noticed half the store was dedicated to standard pet food and the rest to typical pet items. I perused some of the pet items and in the time it took me to take two photos the owner came up to me and informed me I had to cease taking photos. I didn't even get a howdy do first or any other acknowledgement and I was the only customer. In the same breath he claimed he was not going to have me steal his ideas to open up my own pet store. He continued to say he "had worked too hard for too long building up his business to see it taken away". Oh my. I just stood stunned and in my head I am thinking....what ideas are here to steal? Nothing is made locally, by hand or special. It's all from national distributors that anyone can order items from. But I wouldn't dare say anything that would fuel his tirade. I was told to leave, as I did he followed, closed the door on me and put he closed sign up. I did however take one last photo of that closed sign though. Always have to Yelp those photos you know. :) Later that night I was looking through my notes and Eureka! There were two addresses and the downtown address was the one I had intended to visit. That's why I was confused when the GPS said it was only two blocks away. Then I re-read the address and it dawned on me that I've been a customer to the downtown location for many years every time I'm in town. I even recall at one time they mailed an item to me when I wasn't able to get there and purchase it myself. That means not only can I say they've lost one customer (myself) but those that I had previously sung their praises to in the past. I would think that all business professionals knew how word of mouth is a more efficient tool than a costly monthly advertisement is. read more

Cute little doggy boutique in the Historic District! My husband, mom and I drove over from St. Petersburg to explore St. Augustine with our two dachshunds. I wasn't thinking and forgot to bring sweaters for them since FL winters are not usually so cold. We made our way to Paradise Poochie and started hunting through the racks looking for sweaters that would fit. I didn't get the owners name, but she was wonderful. We literally came through her store like a small tornado, sweaters and hangers flying like we were searching for that perfect prom dress. After 10 minutes both dogs were out of their collars and sniffing all over the store...... what a mess. We pulled it together and chose two adorable sweaters that earned many squeals from fellow St. George Street pedestrians. We also bought some treats and squeaky toys for the trouble. Though we have been occasional customers of Paradise Poochie over the past several years, I must say that we were taken aback that during a conversation between myself and the owner, the owner insisted that onions and garlic were ok to give to our beloved dogs. I disagreed with him, stating my knowledge of both onions and garlic to be toxic. He vehemently disagreed and told me I was wrong! It is obvious to me that, of all people, the owner of Paradise Poochie needs to become educated on issues such as this! Most of us dog owners realize that onions and garlic can destroy a dog's red blood cells, leading to anemia. This can occur even with the onion powder found in some baby foods. An occasional small dose is probably ok. However, eating a large quantity even just once, or eating smaller amounts regularly can cause poisoning. This is well-documented all over the 'Web, including WebMD. Once we had this conversation, we chose to take our pooch business elsewhere. read more

We buy our food here and really appreciate this place. The real high quality food can be found here and the owners really know their stuff. They give us the heads up when the manufacturer makes any changes which most places would not do or possibly even know. Forgot the food when I was in town for the weekend. Quick look online to see who carried it & arrived at Paradise Poochie. While I didn't browse long, they seemed to have all the super premium brands including Nutrisource/Pure Vita, Merrick, Go, Orijen; the nicer toys & treats; supplements; collars & leashes... I didn't see if they had a good selection for large dogs, as with a name like 'Poochie' I expect more smaller dogs in the shop. The 2 cans of food I got were about $0.50 more per can than what I currently pay. If I'm back in town though, this is where I'd shop. read more

It has been my good fortune to seek advice from the owners about food etc. These owners individualize your pet and his/her needs. Very seldom have I had this experience even with vets in the field.
