Try a threesome...

Freeze sucker!!! Leave the guilt at home, loosen your belt n get stuck in. Cherry pie ice cream, nuff said. Well almost, there's 20ish flavours to be found inside this new ice cream parlour in Harborne. There's also frozen yoghurt, fresh waffles, sundaes, coffee... Looks can be deceiving. From the street you might be forgiven for thinking its a gamble to step inside. However once you've crossed the threshold you'll find this place is finished to a hi standard, modern n minimal. The Waitrose end is where the mums park their buggies and the kids play on the floor, the other end is rug-rat free.

Mulled wine ice cream.

When holidaying with family on the south coast this year, I visited a fantastic ice cream parlour and commented how it was one thing that was missing in Birmingham. Imagine my joy when I found out that not only was one opening in Birmingham, but on my local High Street, a mere 5 minute walk from my house. I couldn't wait for an excuse to drag my daughter along. Paradice Gelateria (the purpose misspelling of 'paradise' highlights the 'ice' in their name) opened on 26th November 2014, which must be the low season for this kind of business. Some people have questioned the thinking in opening an ice cream shop in the winter. I believe it comes either by accident of when the deeds and building work had finished or with great forethought. As every new business will have a learning curve in their first few months of opening, is it not better to iron these out and be ready & prepared for 'high season'? It sits on the site (or within the site) of the former Harborne Market. The last business operating from here was a caff, which closed a few years ago. It has sat looking like a dilapidated eyesore on the otherwise (still) fairly thriving Harborne High Street. There are entrances on both the High Street (opposite Harborne Library) and on Vivian Road (opposite Waitrose's car park). The entrance on Vivian Road has a small wooden decked outdoor seating for the summer months. The site has been done out to a high standard and inside bares no resemblance to the tawdry market place the occupied the space before it. The toilets are immaculate and spacious, with changing facilities. In one corner they have a milk from field/cow to ice cream themed soft play area for the little ones. They have a selection of 20 ever-changing homemade ice cream flavours, coupled with cakes and a huge list of pancakes, milkshakes, waffles and sundaes. It truly is a dessert fan's heaven. The staff encourage customers to try a taste of any ice cream before committing to buying a cone or tub (rather like ordering real ale). I opted for a 'mulled wine' ice cream as it was something I had never seen or heard of before. It was nice beautifully textured ice cream, if perhaps a little unusual to have a spicy, boozy ice cream. I knew it wouldn't be a taste I was used to, wasn't Heston revered for making a bacon & eggs ice cream? But, don't worry if you're not adventurous, the other flavours when I went in were things like chocolate, Hello Kitty(?), Ferrero Rocher, Lemon Sorbet, Bubblegum and Mint Choc Chip. There's a nice balance between the tried and tested classics, some newer and exciting flavours and one or two experimental ones. The milkshakes are fantastic! For a chocolate milkshake they blend their homemade chocolate ice cream with milk (obvs) and your favourite chocolate bar, topped with whipped cream, delish! I've yet to try the waffles and pancakes, but will certainly be returning. Apparently the sweet sushi is nice. Did I mention they have sweet sushi? I never even knew that was a thing! I've been in twice now and on both occasions, whilst not busy, there has been a steady flow of customers. They don't seem to have ANY online presence (excepting this entry on Yelp), which is unusual in a modern marketplace and I hope it doesn't hinder their trade too much. So, I am currently the only online voice for Paradice Gelateria, as such I implore you to head to Harborne and check it out. With their late opening hours (9pm during the week 10pm on weekends), you can even have a meal close by and head over for dessert.

So this is how I found The Blue Piano... because it was the only restaurant open. From the outside, it doesn't look like a restaurant, but more like a small office or hotel. The whole entrance and first look of it was quite intimidating because it looked like a place I could not afford. But surprisingly as I scanned the menu, the prices were reasonable. The waiter was helpful and attentive. The cuisine is Southeast Asian. I ordered the jackfruit and rambutan red curry and chicken ho fun. Both dishes were delicious and well seasoned. I have no complains during my experience and time here. Every factor from the list I consider important when eating in a restaurant (food, service, price, location, décor, and other random factors depending on how I feel on my day) was checked. This is the perfect restaurant to have dinner whenever you want to impress friends or that special someone, or you just want to feel posh even though you aren't. Highly recommended.

The venue itself is a little like being in someones house and the welcome you get in similar. So friendly! I asked for a Bloody Mary and despite it not being on the menu was made it no questions asked :) After a drink we decided to share one of the two sharing platters. It consisted of some sort of savory cake, top hats and chicken satays. Everything was honestly amazing....fresh and generally spot on. The star for me was the satay sauce...it was literally perfect. Just the right amount of spice! I am 100% going back for a full meal here asap so expect a full review. This is a great find and somewhere I will definitely be taking friends to.

The food. Is. Fantastic. Plentiful portions. No artificial colours or flavourings. Lengthy, albeit 'standard' Birmingham Indian/Balti menu. One particular evening the manager was around and talked us through how some of the dishes were made, and seemed quite keen to educate us on the ingredients used. We often get something complimentary thrown in- tonight we had both a side dish and free ice cream bars! Not sure why this happened, but hey, I'm not complaining! Despite the low prices, it seems like they are trying to create a 'fine dining' experience-- during dinner service the staff check on you, plate your food for you, place the napkins on your lap, etc. I have found the service to lag a bit though, although it seems more like they are trying to give you space than anything else-- it was easy enough to flag someone over if we needed anything. All in all, delicious well-priced curries in Harborne.

Starters are quite small, but were still good and kept room for the main. Desserts are the standard Indian restaurant ice cream menu. In addition to the very prompt service, we were given a side, after dinner drinks and coffee for free, and we don't really know why. We had a great time anyway and I couldn't give it anything under 4 stars.

It's a…read moregreat spot to grab dinner before a film, although it seemed like it was the only restaurant close to the theatre. In fact, that is the only reason we ate here. We were seated quickly on a Wednesday evening. The restaurant didn't appear to be very busy. It took nearly 10 mins for a server to come over and take our drink order. In his defense, I think he was the only server on. I ordered a bramble which was seriously mostly ice. Highly disappointing. It was a happy hour special though So I forgave them. The second drink I ordered was a martini and tasted very weak. I'm not sure if they were watered down due to the price or if all drinks are just plain weak. As far as food, we ordered some garlic dough balls which came with a wonderful jalapeño cheese sauce. I liked the sauce so much that I ordered a meal with it. The potato skins were pretty good. There was one favour with pulled pork that was well worth the calories! As for a main, I had a baked wrap with chicken, lettuce, tomato, cheese sauce and bbq sauce. Also came with a strange salad and a sad serving of coleslaw. What bothered me here was the wrap was baked with the veggies. So the lettuce and tomatoes were boiling hot and soggy. Maybe I'm being too picky, but it kinda ruined it for me. And the fact that our dinner sat under the heat lamps for a bit because our poor server was running his butt off. Not sure why the two managers doing nothing did not deliver our food.... The dessert menu looked amazing so I was hoping it would make up for the underwhelming meal. I ordered a cinnamon crunch waffle that as you'll see from the photo was mouth watering. However, it looked better than it tasted. The ice cream had frozen ice chunks in it from being thawed and re frozen. And the waffle didn't taste fresh. My partner's dessert was a chocolate brownie sundae and he thoroughly enjoyed it. Our server was named Don or Dom. He was lovely and friendly. Very good server. Despite all the disappointment, I would try again. All the 50s rock and roll reminded me of home (although our italian restaurants do not play any music remotely close to that). The menu is large enough that I'm sure I could find something that works.

The restaurant is in a converted Georgian building and feels quite homely. The restaurant itself is in a large extension that's quite modern, but warm and comfortable. However, when we were eventually seated and asked if we wanted the wine flight to go with the meal, I asked if I could see the wine list and the menu too first-thought that was a little odd. We sat for a good while and initially we felt a little forgotten about. Nevertheless once the food started coming it was great. I don't think I would have chosen half of it, but it's good to try new things, especially when you know the chef! We chose a nice bottle of Austrian red which went surprisingly well with each course. A fun evening! I would like to go back on a 'normal' night too, although I feel it's a place for special occasions.

I try and find a space amongst whilst a. not marking my car and b. not hitting any number of the very expensive cars parked here on a week day lunchtime. You can imagine the food in a Michelin star restaurant and of course that's subjective but almost always will get 4 stars from me anyway. For a closet vegetarian (not a huge meat eater) I don't always get on with most Michelins because of their French influence and therefore little or no vegetarian menu. So I often end up having fish as a starter and main course as I did here, as wonderful as it was. The other issue is the desserts tend to be chocolate or fruit based neither of which I am a fan of either but I they bought out a sorbet/ice cream concoction for me. The food as you would expect is perfectly cooked, melt in your mouth goodness. However, to me that's about 60% of the experience, the rest is the service. From the minute I walked in, I a guided to the sofa and offered a drink and then bought into the lounge to await my dining partner. After choosing from the menu, we are effortlessly taken to our table with a view and our knowledgeable and friendly waiter brings our starters promptly. The bill goes over the £100 mark for two but even if it's not your thing, I feel it it's worth doing at least once.

This was not stated in any policy on the website or app. When I explained my situation, the driver hung up on me. I sent a text requesting a refund but received no response. When I contacted customer service, I spoke with Ashe, who informed me that Big John has a verbal policy in place that drivers cannot go upstairs or enter the building. However, this policy was not stated on the website or app. After placing another order for cash delivery, I was informed by Ashe that the driver would not come upstairs. Despite explaining that I have a disability that makes it difficult for me to go downstairs, Ashe gave me a five-minute ultimatum and threatened to blacklist me. This behaviour constitutes a breach of the 2010 Act on Harassment/victimization. As a customer with a disability, I feel that I was not treated with the same consideration as able-bodied customers. Ash was very clear that failure to come downstairs would result in being blacklisted. This made me feel victimized and pressured, especially as the driver only gave me two minutes to get downstairs, which was virtually impossible due to my disability. Despite explaining my situation, the driver continued to call me multiple times, putting a lot of pressure on me. This mistreatment has led me to seek legal advice. Unfortunately, I was unable to make it downstairs in the given time frame, as I was struggling with the stairs. I regret to inform you that the food I received was lukewarm and not hot, which made it almost cold. I was disappointed with the experience and felt mistreated. That familiar warmth that washes over me as I see the pink on green colour…read morescheme, and the way that the words 'Famous Five' makes me think of chicken nuggets rather than Enid Blyton perhaps says a lot about my relationship with Birmingham's fast food institution. My relationship with Big John's on the Bristol Road went from a curious first meeting at the outlet opposite the Vauxhall Garage beyond Millenium Point, to a passionate few months of indulgence following a move to Selly Oak (The Bristol Road Big John's stood between my house and the train station as a constant temptation). Following dieting and vegetarianism, we're not really on speaking terms at present, sadly. Perhaps the best reason to visit Big John's on the Bristol Road lies in its rivalry with Pizza Pepper next door, which has led to an outrageous price war between both establishments, slashing pizza prices to less than 50% (In real terms, a massive 12" pizza from Big John's is a steal at £4.99). While Pizza Pepper's pizzas are less drenched in grease, Big John's has a small advantage by letting customers pick as much of their own toppings as they'd like. For example, my usual would be cheese, pepperoni, jalapenos, chinese chicken, regular chicken, red onions, peppers, mince, a second layer of cheese and a top layer of pepperoni - ONLY in that order. While the shame of struggling home with such a large box past masses of people waiting for busses might hurt for a while, the dinner (and following breakfast of leftovers) will be well worth the while. Besides pizza, Big John's covers a large variety of chip shop regulars, peri-peri chicken, kebabs, kid's meals and even paninis. These are all mostly inexpensive, with the 'Famous Five' deal in Selly Oak remaining an old favourite. When I moved to Selly Oak two years ago, a fairly small - but still generous - portion of six chicken nuggets and chips, a slice of pizza and chips, a donner meat burger, one piece of chicken and chips or four hot wings and chips were all available for £1 each, which proved to be a very tempting proposition at first. Following two jumps in price to £1.25, then £1.50 a few weeks ago, it remains a good deal but is less likely to make me count my change in the street like it used to. Perhaps over-indulgence has overshadowed my relationship with the Big John's in Selly Oak, but it continues to open new stores and keep customers happy with a large and often pretty tasty menu, so it must be doing something right.

With so many great-tasting and reasonably-priced Indian food options around, it is quite impressive that a higher end, pricier Indian restaurant like Pushkar has established a loyal clientele. Pushkar sets itself apart from other Indian restaurants in the area due to its upscale setting, the high quality of its food ingredients, and especially its creative dessert offerings. My first dining experience at Pushkar was purely by chance. I was staying near Brindley Place, and happened to be walking past the restaurant, when I decided to stop and check out the menu. The duck masala sounded interesting, so I decided to try it, and it definitely exceeded my expectations. The thick tomato-based curry had a fantastic flavor profile that consisted of garlic, ginger, black pepper and red chilies. It paired well with basmati rice and a side of raita. Since my first visit, I have dined at Pushkar a few more times, and have always enjoyed everything I have tried. The murgh korma stands out as a rich, creamy, nutty curry dish that is perfect for you if you are in the mood for something less spicy. The innovative desserts at Pushkar are a major draw for me. The gajar ka halwa tart with pistachio ice cream is my personal favorite. The garam masala brulee sounded interesting, but didn't taste too different from regular crème brulee; the garam masala in it was really only a hint of cinnamon. It still was pretty tasty. The chocomosa is a filo samosa filled with chocolate and roast almonds, and is served with a scoop of cappuccino ice cream. Why had nobody else ever thought of creating a chocolate samosa, and if they did, why had I never eaten one before? Friends, if you find yourselves in Brummy, you must treat yourselves to a meal at Pushkar. It is truly deserving of all of the awards that have been bestowed upon it, including the 2015 British Curry Award, the 2015 Best of Broad Street Award, and the 2015 English Curry Award.
