    Beef Brisket - Yummy!
    Adam S.

It was a night of firsts. Not only was my visit last Friday the first time I had been to The Plough, it was the first time I'd actually gone to Harborne for food and drink. Friends of mine have not long bought a house in Harborne and so as residents of the area they inevitably want to try and show this city boy the local highlights. From the outside and when first walking in, it has a feel of a country pub. As it was a Friday is was bustling however the bar staff were pros and I didn't have to wait long at all to get my first drink, a nice pint of Mad Goose. My friends had booked a table for 7.30 and we waited a little for the staff to clear people off of ours. I also learnt that we had to buy food at the bar, which I don't mind as it hells eradicate that bill splitting fiasco at the end of the sitting. I ordered a beef brisket and others at the table ordered a burger and fish a chips. All looked very tasty and mine was lovely. With a side of doughy grilled bread and some chutney the beef was soft, tender and full of flavour. I had a chance to look around the place on my way to and from the loos, which BTW are very nice. The whole place has an industrial meets country farm mix with lashings of wood, practically everywhere. There is also a lovely garden and outside seating however it was raining for us so we stayed clear. My experience was very positive and would love to go back and soak some rays with a drink or three in the garden. Give it a go city peeps!

Monday 2-4-1 Pizzas Went with my friend for major catch up. As soon as you step in there is a great atmosphere, especially for a Monday, had to have a look for a table as it was so busy. We ordered our drinks and pizza at the bar each having half pint of cider. The smell from the kitchen made our mouths water and in no time at all we had our pizzas. I was able to swap rocket for olives on my pizza really easily at the bar when I ordered. Pizza's were brilliant, very fresh ingrediant, probably one of the best I ever had. The style of the pub was slightly vintage and we kept on pointing out all the different features and finishes that we kept on spotting. The Plough had a big range of different people, one of the only places I've seen students and locals of equal amount. Would really recommend to anyone for drink, meal or lunch, another good reason to go Harbourne! :)

    2-4-1 Pizza on Mondays

The Plough really has to be up there as one of the best pubs in Birmingham. I went recently for a meal on the 2-4-1 Pizza Monday and it was fantastic. Even though it was a Monday, the place was packed so I would recommend booking if you're going for a meal - we very nearly didn't get a table. The decor in The Plough is a stylish mix of traditional and urban, and has some great feature points. There's also an outside beer garden which looked great. The staff were very friendly and helpful, even though they were clearly run off their feet. There is a huge selection of drinks as you'd expect, and the food menu was also vast. The food also caters well to different dietry requirements such as vegetarian and gluten free, which is always great to see from a pub. The pizza options were creative and offered something a little different. My tuna, anchovi, watercress and olive pizza was perfect, and everyone in my group really enjoyed their choice. They are also extremely big, but they're happy to give you a take-out box at the end for any left-overs. The 2-4-1 pizza deal made it really good value for money, and they also do a 2-4-1 burger deal on a Tuesday. My whole group was really impressed with The Plough - it seems to be one of those rare pubs that has hit the nail on the head with what makes a 'posh pub' work - down to earth service, laid back environment but absolutely fantastic food.

This ia a really great pub in a nice part of town. It does not matter if you are drinking or fancy a bite to eat - the plough suits both. It is best sampled on a summers eveing when the back garden area is always lively. The food is good pub grub, excellent pizzas and there are always some good offers on. Plenty of home made items unlike many other public houses serving grub! They do movie nights on a sunday with free popcorn! And have a quiz night. More suited to clientel under 40yrs i would say. Well worth a visit!

The Plough is a beautifully decorated, family friendly, gastro pub located in Birmingham's affluent Harborne district. Trendy but not too trendy, it attracts all types - not least because of it's excellent food and large, sunny beer garden. They have an extensive wine list and menu and the atmosphere is very chilled with soulful background music at just the right level. Everything is expertly planned at The Plough from the Russian doll wallpaper to the quirky garden furniture and decorations (vintage barber shop chairs, neon signs and rustic shelving). There is even a barrel full of umbrellas in the garden, should you wish to smoke when it's raining or get to your table without ruining your hair. Don't worry, most seating in the garden is covered so this is just an extra precaution. The menu at The Plough is large and varied with daily specials available too. Today is Monday so it's 241 stone baked pizzas. Freshly prepared, seasonal ingredients are used to bring you hearty meals which are rich in flavour and lovingly presented. You have to order and pay first at the bar. Prices are moderate with a rump steak costing you £16.50 and the house soup at a costly £5.50. I don't doubt that it is the finest soup and the chunkiest, fresh bread though so the prices are most likely reflective of the quality. The Plough serves food from 11am on weekdays,10am weekends and has a very tempting brunch menu which ranges from £4.75 for a veggie sausage sarnie to £8.75 for the house cooked breakfast. If you prefer a lighter bite then pastries are also available from just £1.75. As I mentioned previously, today is 241 pizzas and they have a huge range; I can recommend the Chorizo and Roasted Peppers with Cajun Chicken and Black Olives for £12. Yes, it's expensive but they are very nice pizzas and if you come on a Monday you're quids in. There are plenty of food offers available in the menu and on the specials boards and even though prices are at the higher end of the pub food market, there is still something for all budgets. The Plough is the perfect summer pub but still cosy and homely enough inside to while away a winter afternoon. Why not hop on the bus from Birmingham? It only takes 20 mins and is a great escape from the city crowds. UPDATE. - I enquired on the way out and a children's menu is available; all meals are £5. They also have soya milk in stock if you take that in your coffee.

I have never been so disappointed. I could genuinely cook a better dinner with my eyes shut and they are supposed to be professionals. The beef was terrible, roast potatoes were not fresh but frozen ones and broccoli was over cooked by about 10 minutes (mush). They had ran out of basic condiments I requested and told me they were on order. Nobody clearly does a stock check to keep on top of things. I spoke to Sharon the manager who huffed and puffed in my face and stormed off mumbling under her breath, never to return. Unacceptable behaviour from a manager offering a service that is far from satisfactory.

The food is always good and well prep rared and the service is friendly. The pub can get quite busy in the evenings with the local students and also in the after work hours as the nearby hospital staff drop in for a pint or two, and the Quiz Night on Tuesdays makes it nearly impossible to get a seat, with the food service obviously slowing down as a consequence. During the day, however, the Country Girl is genuinely nice spot for a few beers and a meal. There is a small and quiet beer garden to the rear, which is a great spot in the summer

OK, a bit selfish of me so c'mon visit Bohemia as soon as you have the chance! Some reasons for it: This very modern restaurant tucked away of the Bristol Road buzzing is what we would classify of a fine bistro. I have been there with a couple of friends for a meal and I couldn't be happier! I am a salmon lover so it's always delightful when you find some creative meals with salmon than are not just about sushi! Well, Bohemia Cafe Bistro has a delicious smoked salmon from heaven, indeed! The veggie options are similarly varied, and I most recently enjoyed Bohemia's take on the ploughman's lunch: The ranges of cheeses and chutneys were tasty and interesting without being too strong or try-hard, the bread was fresh and particularly nice and my accompanying berry smoothie was refreshing to say the least. Although I haven't ever dined in the evening I would certainly be keen to take someone with me next time. A real gem in the takeaway haven that is Selly Oak, for sure.

You step across a small car park and into the public bar, which is a large open space that can often get busy when there are sporting events on the big screen, but venture past this and The British Oak slowly starts to reveal its many charms over a series of side and back rooms, and an extensive garden. You may think that the place looks big when viewed from the front, but this really only tells half the story. When the pub was originally built, and for many years that followed, the side rooms were variously 'The Gents' Only Lounge', or 'The Smoke Room', but in 21st Century, smoke-free Britain these are now simply extra rooms within the same pub that offer quiet places for customers to drink, eat and talk, away from the bustle of the main bar. Move towards the back of the building and you could almost be in another pub entirely as you enter the small and cosy back bar, more than likely stepping over a sleeping dog or two in process. With an open fire and the genuine feel of a small, country boozer, this snug space is particularly welcoming on dark and damp Winter afternoons. To the side of the back bar there is yet another room, the last of the 5, which is variously used as a venue for family parties (particularly at weekends) or for any number of events promoted by Stirchley's burgeoning creative community, including film screenings and a comedy night. Whilst the 5 interconnecting rooms of the main building offer an impressive array of different pub experiences under the same roof, it is only once you move outside at the back of the pub that you really get a sense of the size of the place. The back door opens onto a large, covered area containing leather sofas and long tables that offer a rare chance to drink and smoke in comfort, before leading you down the steps into a seriously huge garden that is also the perfect afternoon sun trap. The garden has a slide and various other play equipment for the kids (and big kids) and even when busy, as it often is during the summer months, it never feels too crowded. Further still, and at the very back of the garden, there is the quintessentially English site of a manicured bowling green and wooden clubhouse, for this is the home of The British Oak Bowling Club. Listen to sound of polite applause and muted cheers drifting across the garden on summer afternoons and you will be a million miles away from the slow drudge of the Pershore Road. The British Oak is child and dog-friendly and offers a decent selection of wines, spirits and lagers, as well as a range of cask ales sufficiently varied to make it one of CAMRA's 'Real Heritage Pubs'. The food an offer ranges from good, honest pub grub - the gammon, egg and chips is particularly fine - as well as bar snacks, such as bowls of chips, sandwiches, pizzas and hot pies. In an age of homogenised chain pubs and regenerated urban boozers that often try too hard to impress, The British Oak is a welcome change to the norm. It's a traditional pub that is moving with the times but doing so at its own pace, thank you very much, and therein lies its charm. If you are looking for a place to sit and read a newspaper over a pint, or for somewhere to take family or friends, in summer or winter, I recommend a visit.
