It was my first time eating at the Plough tonight and it was a fantastic dining experience all around. Not realizing we would have to make a reservation on a Wednesday night, we entered into a bustling crowd, yet, within 5 minutes a lovely table towards the back of the pub was cleared for us. The atmosphere somehow manages to please a variety of tastes and occasions from large birthday celebrations to an intimate dinner for two. All within the cozy, yet chic, modern backdrop. I am based in Los Angeles and therefore I am used to a multitude of hip places to eat that cater to all of the dietary requirements/choices you could imagine. I was so happy to see that the Plough offer a completely Gluten free menu, and my brother, at last got more than one option as a Vegetarian. The food flowed out in perfect timing and was wonderfully presented. All of our dishes were delicious and superbly portioned. In my opinion, the owner(s)? are well ahead of the game here, from the decor to the presentation, to the menu range and not to forget the level of service. We didn't even have to leave our seats to order tea and coffee after our meal, even though it's an 'order your food and drink at the bar' type of pub - your staff are fab - oh, and we are still chuckling about the tea cozies - how fun! The Plough is one of those destinations in Harborne that can get very busy. On many visits, we have had to make a few circuits of the restaurant to find a seat. The restaurant menu is reasonable. There are offers available on various days of the week, so worth checking those out if you like a bargain. The ambience is nicely relaxed. However, it is one of those venues that can get very noisy, and feel quite bustly when you're in. This also means that placing an order at the bar can be challenging on busy days. When the weather is nice, there is the beer garden. Actually they have a sheltered area in the beer garden with outdoor heaters, so even when the weather is not so nice, it is worth a visit. I ordered the fish and chips when we last dined in. The portion was quite generous. The fish was succulent, the batter was crisp, and the chips were perfect. I would have liked more tartare sauce in the serving. Also, it was served on a wooden board. If you're a fan of the plate then you'll be left wanting after a visit here. Mr Ting ordered a calzone. This came out piping hot, and served very plainly. The filling was very tasty, but there was a big gap inside the calzone. I felt that there could have been a bit more filling to it. The food came out quickly despite how busy the restaurant area was. And everything came out hot for our group of seven diners too. Overall The Plough is a great spot. Can't wait to come back over the summer for some drinks in the beer garden. read more

This is my 4th review of the plough. Had an ok lamb burger. Wednes. 13 nov lunchtime. Settled myself in the corner and 5 pushchairs came round to sit by me. I moved quick dont do that many screamers. 1 yes but not fIVE Lamb burger was just ordinary chips were fine. Staff were a laugh as always. It filled up as always by the time I had left. Was dissap there was no mushroom and Swiss burger oh well. Will stick to my. Favourite eggs benedict read more

fri 30 march 2013 went here for a burger after hospit apt was fine lamb burger with nice fries and loads of rocket decent rose house as well £16 all in sat in the window at front was a bit chilly this was at 330 on fri afternoon still quite busy though 10 oct went here for another lunch but really ill with heavy cold the barman took pity on me and made me a big mug of honey and lemon made me feel so much better caring sharing staff wowzer oh had extra delish eggs royale again with superb smoked salmon cannot fault anything promise to have something else next time just fab 21 sep went here for brunch today great menu had eggs benedict with smoked salmon delish its now my fave pub free tap water iced and fruited at the end of the bar delish carrot cakes all ahomemade on the bar very good menu nice atmosphere the star of harborne read more

I cannot rave about this place enough! First of all it has the nicest most attentive staff I have ever encountered. On the last time I visited, although there were no tables, all the staff made sure to save us one straight away and quickly prepared us drinks while we were waiting. Later on, when I went to ask for the burger special of the day, they offered to make any combination we wanted even when it wasn't on the menu. The food was gorgeous. I had a beef and ale pie an my boyfriend had a beef and chorizo burger. Both were clearly homemade and came in generous portions (none of us manage to finish). There was also a great choice of drinks (ales, ciders and beer) with several foreign beers on bottle. The decor is also great, with its mismatched chairs, wooden floors and beautiful beer garden (make sure to come here in the Summer). A gem in Birmingham. read more

Love this place - good food (much better than most pubs in the area) and great atmosphere. The beer garden makes it a gorgeous place to relax in summer. They also have lots of toys to keep kids busy - a nice touch to ensure a relaxing fun visit for everyone. It gets super busy for dinner in summer, best to book in advance or prepare for a short wait, though they'll put your name down for a table if they're full which is nice. They don't take many same-day reservations so best to book in advance if possible. read more

Tasty but have to work for your dinner. The décor and atmosphere in the Plough is great. The food menu is good for pub food and after eating there a few times everything I've tried is really good with decent portions. The calazone and pizzas are nice and really generous sizes, they will even give you a pizza box to take it with you if you don't finish it. There is a whiskey bar there also if your a Bourbon/whiskey drinker like me its a nice touch. But there is one thing that does annoy me... You go up the bar to order a drink for you and your partner, she has a wine or cider and you want a Bourbon... so you have to order a drink at each bar, 2 trips for 1 round. You sit down with the menu choose your food then go back up the bar again to order your food, during the meal you need another drink so obviously you ask the waiter/waitress.....Nope back up the bar mid meal you go. Then come desert (grasshopper pie is pretty good!!) you have to go back up the bar to order again.... best get a drink while you there! Food is good and fair value, the drinks can be a little pricey for a Pub (especially if you like something from the whiskey bar) I just wished you got a little more service, once your sat down and eating, read: spending more, surely bringing more drinks isn't to much to ask! read more

After waiting so long and deliberating at what to have on the menu for months I was so excited when we got to finally eat here. The drinks were pretty pricey for Birmingham. I ordered the chilli with gluten free bread and it was awful :( it wasn't what I expected at all. It was more of a soup consistency where there was water separating from the sauce. The actual flavour was like a tomato pasta sauce then all of a sudden spice hit the back of your throat. The gluten free bread it came with was delicious but apart from that it was awful. The guacamole was also too lemony for the flavouring of the chilli. My boyfriend ordered a chicken bun and it was so dry it tasted like it had been reheated! I would come here again for maybe a glass of wine in the summer but never again for food, sorry! read more

Went here with a friend for lunch. The place was packed out and is clearly doing a roaring lunchtime trade. Ordering food is via the bar. The menu was extensive and as we were sitting near the bar the food coming out of the kitchens looked delicious. I ordered a chicken and chargrilled pepper pizza with chorizo and olives. This came on a nice wooden platter with a cutter. It was hot, authentic looking and very tasty. It was also very substantial, but I would expect this given the £11.95 price. Thankfully, I had a 2-4-1 voucher which brought the cost of the meal to a very reasonable level. The staff were friendly and attentive, having a laugh with each other and on good terms with the clientele. On the whole,I wouldn't have expected any more from a lunch in a quaint pub in Harborne. If you do decide to go, it is advisable to prebook as nearly all tables were reserved or occupied when I visited. I would highly recommend this place and despite the somewhat elevated prices you are sure to get a quality and satisfying meal, with good service and a lively atmosphere. read more

I like everything about The Plough....the food,the people,the staff.....have been going there years and never had a bad word to say,,but having worked in the leisure industry,all be it at the opposite end,.as a manager of health clubs, I can say with some certainty that the best can be ruined by bad management. A friend of mine had the dubious pleasure of meeting the new manager of The Plough this evening. She and many of our friends have been very good customers and have spent a lot of time and money there.But it would seem this manager is more used to dealing with the lower end of the market...that and insisting that the management is more important than his pub or his customers. No people skills no idea of the quality of his pub or the people who spend a lot of money there. As a direct result of his attitude me,,my friend and all of our friends will not go near the place.....unless you want to be treated to the same I suggest you avoid it too. read more

Refurbed over a year ago, The Plough is a lively and friendly place to drink and have a bite. In the summer time the beer garden is a great addition and is regularly busy with a good atmosphere, pretty ladies are not uncommon. The food is actually very good and not too over priced but its better to eat earlier in the day than later. All in all a decent pub/bar in a decent part of Birmingham. read more
