The Lord Clifden has to be one of my favourite places in Birmingham. It's located a short walk out of the city centre in the Jewellery Quarter area boasting a large well designed outdoor space as well as two fantastic bar areas. For my lunch today I had the 5oz sirloin steak, this was accompanied by some seriously special hand cut chips, watercress and peppercorn sauce. The whole meal was packed full of flavour and fantastically presented. The service was also excellent....I really can't fault it! The Lord Clifden on weekends is a firm favourite amongst my friendship group. If you haven't been before you can take advantage of the varied selection of beers and ales, as well as enjoying the local DJ's playing a mix of classic funk, soul and disco. My advice is to get down early on weekends to get in for free. There is usually a small charge for admission on both Fridays and Saturday nights starting around 10pm.

The best way for me to describe the food at Lord Clifden is pornographic. I've been wanting to go here since sampling their burger at the Who's Got Beef challenge and we finally made it. Seth S. and I chose to walk here from UoB - I'd recommend going here after fasting or a good workout - or at least don't wear your tight pants. Thank me later. I knew Lord Clifden had something special at the challenge when I tasted their chargrilled juicy burger patty. When we visited in-person, I chose the D-Face burger which is topped with caramelized onions, melted cheddar, salad and mayo, and comes with a side of fries. This burger was sheer American Route 66 perfection. HUGE. Tasty. Gooey. Crunchy. The perfect balance of flavors. Sorry Texas, you ain't got nothin' on Clifden. The menu boasts a variety of burgers, steaks, sandwiches, and finger foods. The descriptions are simple and don't sound nearly as impressive as the food tastes. Seth ordered the Fungy sandwich. I got to try a bite and was crazy impressed. Garlic aioli and perfectly cooked mushrooms adorn a beautifully toasted bread beckoning the French countryside. Simple, balanced and flavorful. Another highlight was the cider. The bar has a neat pump that can freeze the cider if you want. It's just like a lovely adult slush drink. Lord Clifden has a variety of seating options. Toward the front there is a bar seating area, in the middle is a lounge, and in the back is a lovely beer garden with TVs for watching sport. We chose to sit in the lounge. The seating was lower and outfitted with moveable stuffed stools and a big loungy booth. It was very comfortable. The mood is sexy and dark, with lighting that feels just right on the eyes. I could waste a lot of hours in here if not careful.

It is not the biggest of pubs I have visited but I have to say it is one of the best. I don't have any criticisms of this pub and I have no doubts I will be back here. There has always been a friendly and family feel about this place whenever I have been here and the staff are excellent with their customers. The Lord Clifden is an excellent place for you and your mates to have a pint at. This pub is a great place to be particularly when it is a warm day. The beer garden is pretty spacious and there is a designated smoking area. You can get free wireless internet access and there is also a function room that can be hired. Regular music and quiz nights take place and if you are looking for a pub with a terrific atmosphere, this is one of them. I wouldn't hesitate in coming back and next time I visit The Lord Clifden, I will try the food on offer. You can have a look at the menus on the pub website to see what dishes are served here. Definitely recommend you give this place a try.

top notch haloumi veggie burger at jewellery quarter gastro-pub!

Great little find on the periphery of the jewellery quarter. Their food wins many plaudits as does the ale, and the prices are reasonable. Plenty of vegetarian options on the gastro pub style menu. My haloumi burger in breadcrumbs on a nicely toasted brioche bun was very tasty. We ate outside in the big beer garden well away from the football fans watching the game on the tvs which were dotted about. Good quality pub food in a laid back traditional pub with a friendly vibe - whats not to love? Recommended!

Perfect start of an awesome night. I got a huge chicken burger which was one of the best that i have ever ate. The location is a traditional pub with a big open air smoking area at the backyard. I would definitely return to this places. It is now one of my favorite places which i would like to show me german friends. Chickenburger...awesome!!!

The Lord Clifden is part of a small chain in Birmingham, the Urban Art Bars (UAB). It's sister pub is the Red Lion (previously reviewed) and both are situated in the Jewellery Quarter. That's really where the similarities between the two pubs end. Whereas the Red Lion seems to cater for more of a "pub crowd" (an older, discerning type who want a relative level of peace while enjoying a craft ale), the Lord Clifden definitely gives off more of a party vibe. Between it's extensive garden (complete with table football, a postbox, graffiti and ping pong), it's vibrant street art on the walls (LOTS of Banksy and punky prints) and it's varied selection of DJ's... it's a great place to have a drink late into the evening. The Clifden serves a good selection of interesting ales (I tried the Rotten Ale last time, named for it's connections with Johnny Rotten) as well as some Ciders, wines and a pretty good selection of Spirits. In the summer they do Slushy Cider and it's fabulous to sit in the garden and enjoy a cold pint whilst taking in the Sunshine. They sometimes do a BBQ too! As expected for a high design pub, a pint aint cheap. You're looking at around £3.50 upwards for a craft ale, but it always seems to be well kept and fresh. They have a food menu too, but this can be quite hit and miss. I have only had great meals here, but have eaten with friends who have been disappointed with their food. Unlike many of the other venues in the area, it shows a good range of sports. If you're a football or rugby fan, you can catch many of the bigger games on the big screens around the whole establishment (including the garden). It's a great pub, well worth a try if you haven't been before. It loses a star for price and inconsistency of food, but it does get an additional one for the large and fabulous garden!

Frozen cider in prep for Sunday!

I loved the Clifden for years - it was the pub where me and my mates would meet to pick over there goings on of the night before. The food is great usually although service can be sporadic on a hot summers day - Which brings to another selling point. The massive beer garden and outside bar ( bbq too in the summer). It has a range of music on over the weekend so something for everyone but does charge £5 in on a Saturday night so I tend to avoid it then as I shouldn't have to pay to go toy local & probably as it has got so popular it doesn't attract the best crowd on a weekend in my opinion. If you go on a sunny bank holiday weekend be prepared for the busyness! On a week night though you can't get much better!

Finding a bar with a good beer garden close to the centre of Birmingham isn't the easiest of tasks but the Clifden really fills the void. (I'm aware of the fact that it's currently hammering it down here and that the season for beer gardens has passed for this year! But this is one of the best in the city) In all honesty the Clifden may be a little 'hipster-y' for some, and in places it is. The beer garden does like a bit like Banksy vomited on it but there is more than ample seating, TV's outside for those of a more.. sporty persuasion and more often than not a bbq going during the summer months. I haven't even touched on the food and drink selections at the Clifden. A regularly changing cask menu is coupled with a delicious culinary offerings (the Sunday lunch is epic!), and if cask ale isn't your thing there's a damn good selection of bottled beers, wines, soft drinks and hot beverages for your delectation. So, when the weather picks up (or even before then for a lovely, cosy drink inside) head over to the Clifden. You won't regret it.

Another excellent Monday night! After a busy bank holiday weekend we decided we needed some good food. We initially went for steak but the sight of the roast dinners were enough to tempt us. I had a mix of beef and lamb and everything was just perfect. The best Sunday roast I have eaten out. Again the music and the vibe was really good. I really enjoy this place and will be returning again and again to sample more of the delicious menu and soak in the good atmosphere.

    Happy steak day!

Unfortunately, as with most pool halls I've encountered (a lot of them that have been Rileys, in fact) it does seem a bit dark and dingy in there - and, given the nature of the place, it does attract large groups of males. I've never encountered trouble in there but a couple of times have received looks off the kind of naughty boys mommy warned me not to play with. Still, people generally keep themselves to themselves and the bar staff are friendly - reasonable pint prices too, so a more than decent way to kill an hour or two when the city's more visceral thrills don't appeal.

Half of us ordered a snack and a drink and were talking when one of the guys from the bar (who we were told by his co-worker was called Levi) came up to us and said "so are each one of you gonna get a drink or are you gonna have to leave?" When asked "why", he began making up some excuses such as "we have to heat it up it costs to heat this place"? Reminder: the bar was nearly empty and our table had ordered drinks and snacks. As we were leaving I still had my drink and I asked "can we have 5 minutes while I finish my drink", to which he started being rude and said "you can stay, they can leave" and just kept refusing to let my friends wait 5 minutes. When asked to deliver further explanation as to why we are being kicked out, he walked away and did not provide any details. We believe it was unfair for following reasons: 1. The bar was nearly empty, therefore we did not take up anybody's space and nobody was waiting to take a seat. 2. We were PAYING COSTUMERS. 3. We were not loud and did not behave inappropriately. There's lots of disco lights and a DJ desk. Sky Sports was on, which I see as a bonus, but with the sound off and text on screen instead. That's OK. Something to watch. So they have decent offers for lunch and a comprehensive, pretty much as you'd expect, pub style menu. I was after something quick and filling, so went for the 'classic' Gammon, egg, chips combo for £5. Service was very pleasant and smiley. The food arrived after ,maybe 15-20 minutes so timing was just about OK. Usual mash potato style chips you get everywhere, so zero taste or texture. Good juicy Gammon and nice fried egg. All was fine, even the side salad. Checked out the drinks selection at the very long, well sorted bar and looked impressive. So, despite being in a bit of an industrial wasteland, I had a good stop-over. There were maybe a dozen people there at 1.30pm on a Wednesday, which to me indicates the place probably has a good batch of regulars. Mix of oldies, lunchies, and business meeting types.
