Sometimes when you go for a meal, things go wrong. Unfortunately, that's just the way it is. Hat's off to the Malthouse for my experience on Sunday... I will explain... So, Sunday. After a day of cleaning and cocktails on Saturday, Sunday was a day of shopping. We woke up, skipped breakfast and then proceeded to hit Tesco, CostCo and One Stop for bits and pieces for an upcoming Yelp event. By 1:30pm on Sunday afternoon, we were so hungry we could have eaten our own arms. Yelp Elite Caroline C. had suggested lunch at the Malthouse. I haven't ever been to this venue before (not actually venturing down the Birmingham Canal areas very often unless it's to head to The Flapper or as a shortcut to get to other places located off it). It's a pretty pub, smack bang on the side of the Canal (making it perfect for a waterside drink in the summer or a cosy spot in the Winter). It is a chain pub (a Taylor Walker), but that doesn't take away from it's charms. On Sunday afternoon (a glorious day) it was packed. After we had managed to locate Caroline, we perused the menu for some big food for our lunch. First thing to note, they do offer a roast on a Sunday but it's not on the menu. There are signs up which advise you of the Sunday Lunch option; but no prices (which is a little strange). On this particular day, there was only beef available which was a let down as I had a hankering for chicken. Instead, I opted for the "posh pie" (Chicken, Chardonnay and Pancetta) and grabbed a pint of Big Ben whilst I waited. The wait was not unreasonable for a busy day, but it seemed like forever as I was mega hungry and hadn't been warned of it. I would say it was around 25 minutes before we got our food. The mash, peas and gravy were spot on, but the pie was still practically frozen in the middle... This is where their customer service really shone through. I located my nearest member of staff (a lady collecting glasses) and explained and was promised a replacement meal AND a refund for my dish! I hadn't made a big fuss or expected a refund, but that seemed like a nice gesture. My replacement pie maybe took another.. 15 minutes or so and was presented with a whole new plate of mash, peas and gravy. Despite it being hotter than the sun, it was filling and delicious! Food isn't Wetherspoon's cheap at this venue, but it's not unreasonably priced. My pie was £8.65 and a pint of Big Ben was around three quid something. There was a jazz band playing in the bar who were pretty loud. It seemed they attracted a crowd of regulars, but if it were me, I would turn down the volume a little. We had to speak very loudly to have a conversation on the other side of the pub from them. The weirdest thing was that they played "Oh Christmas Tree" (in September), but other punters seemed to enjoy this. I would definitely give this venue another shot after the top customer service they showed on our visit. The food was good and it had a warm and welcoming atmosphere. It's not on my "must visit again immediately" list, but it's a nice place to sit and enjoy a drink by the waterside. read more

I have walked past the Malt House many times and never been in. Although it is a pub primarily I decided to visit for a quick after work coffee on the pretty balcony at the front of the venue. When asking for the coffee menu I was surprised to be given just three options...a latte, cappuccino or americano. My latte was a bit bland, served with only two packets of sugar on the side of the plate...which I had not asked for or needed. The slightly lower than average standard of the coffee could have been forgiven if the price had reflected this, sadly it did not. I left £3.05 worse off thinking I should have walked the extra few metres to the neighbouring bars on the canal side. I hope this place is a lot better suited to weekend drinkers, as I would be hard pushed to come back for the non-alcoholic offerings. read more

Located near Birmingham's Brindley Place and within 5 minutes of the Mailbox, this has a nice atmosphere, and you also feel relaxed whether sitting inside or outside by the canals. Sit outside and try the coffee! It's perfect for watching the barges go by, and you can see most of the bridges, canals, and an ideal venue if you fancy visiting the Sea life centre afterwards. They also serve food, and is popular with local workers after 5pm, although it is much quieter in the day after lunch. I found this to be a pleasant surprise and welcoming staff, with good friendly service and a relaxing place to have a few drinks. Maybe next time I'll try the food. read more

I can't believe I have never reviewed this place before! I have been coming to this pub for many years on a Sunday for lunch with friends. Mainly I choose this venue because of it's great location on the canal side. Also, generally the atmosphere is quite relaxed and the Sunday Roast isn't bad. My most recent visit was this Sunday. The weather was lovely and I was hoping we could get a seat outside, but other people had the same idea. Nevertheless inside it's quite light and airy due to the high ceiling, so not too dark depressing. Also, it's quite a big pub, so not hard for large groups to get a table. I had however forgotten that over certain times of year there is a brass/jazz band playing inside. If you like this sort of thing great, however if you don't there is not much getting away from the noise! (they play from 1pm-3.3pm btw!). Ordering food from the bar was pretty quick and simple and waiting time was ok. However Vicky ordered a chicken pie which was cold and they were quite stingy on the veg. Nevertheless, for Vicky they were really good and gave her a new plate of food and a refund too, without any hassle. When I went back to order a round of drinks later, I think I must have been wearing my invisibility cloak, as I had to wait ages while people who arrived after me came and went, before I interrupted the duty manager who was serving and told him to serve me next! I mean in terms of location and general appearance and atmosphere, the place is nice, with canalside seating, high ceilings, and a beautiful balcony. If you're just coming in for drinks, fair enough. But the food, even with lowered expectations, is just very disappointing, and very overpriced for incredibly standard or possibly below-standard pub fare (in my opinion). Like seriously, how do you mess up a toastie? The toast was stale, and barely toasted. Halloumi is hard to destroy without effort, and yet somehow the grilled halloumi on my sandwich was burnt so badly that it had a really horrible char and chemical taste. Sandwiches with a £5 price tag were incredibly thin, barely anything in them. I will say that the sweet potato fries were spot on, so if you must get food, get those. read more

My friend's wedding reception took place here. Was lovely place. Booked the whole of upper floor. Place itself is opposite the National Indoor Arena and the other side is Sea Life Centre. So the Venue was at a great location. The canal running front and side. There are balconies at the upper floor where we were and the view was just beautiful. I love to eat here. Every time I come to Birmingham on business I eat here. Its a large pub, has great character, has allot of seating, is quaint even though it is large, has a nice menu and good food. The beer selection is decent as well. For Non English people there is no table service, simply decide what you want and tell the person at the bar that takes your order your table number. This is how pub style restaurants work. I went here for the first time for food recently. To be honest, they weren't having great day - there was a large conference on causing disruption and the card machine kept breaking, but these things happen! The venue itself is nice. It's located just on the canal in a lovely old building. It has a good size ground floor, and upstairs area and outdoor seating both inside and out. We had gone for Sunday Lunch; unfortunately, most of the options weren't available, which I suppose is a testament to the quality of the food. I ordered a burger with some onion rings and a coke (yes, I know, Jon in a pub with a soft drink....). The food was ok. It felt like pretty standard pub stuff to me, but maybe a little pricey... There were other issues with my experience which were specific to the day. I don't think it's fair to include them here as they don't reflect on the venue, just the circumstances. However, it is possible that these things coloured my view. I would consider going back to give it another whirl, but I wont be rushing to plan an event there. One day-specific thing I will mention is the great customer service we received when, unfortunately, one of my party's meals arrived cold. This bar was quiet on the night we went in winter. We sat in a cosy seat overlooking the canal, we didn't have any food there just drinks. My boyfriends a fan of beers and the night we were there enjoyed one of their guest ales while I sipped on wine. Brindley Place can be really expensive to grab a drink, and I think that puts people off going towards this part of Birmingham. It's really quite a shame because this area of town is so beautiful. But if you just walk a bit further along the canal towards the NIA, you'll come across a great little pub that has more going for it than all the extortionate places put together. Let's face it, I'm pretty sure Bill Clinton hasn't eaten anywhere else, and The Malt House proudly hangs a photo of the ex-president waving over their balcony. And so they should! Take that expensive places! In the summer time, hoards of people sit in the balcony area, soaking up the sun and watching the glistening canals. The alcohol prices matches any standard pub; I always drink a sailor jerry's and coke in here, which comes to about £2.30 if I remember correctly. So there's no adding cost for the view at all. The grub is great traditional pub style, which is exactly what's needed on this side of Birmingham. It's great tasting, and it allows us lesser-paid folk to enjoy Brindley Place in all its glory. read more

The Malt House is a nice step away from the rest of Brindley Place which gives it a much nicer and calmer air than some of the hectic places just up the canal. We visited last week with some overseas visitors and I was pleasantly surprised by the place. We managed to get a great table upstairs that gave us a wonderful view of the canal. We ordered both drinks and food. Both were great and extremely cheap in my view. The food came very quickly and although it is just basic bar grub everyone enjoyed their meal. The lady behind the bar was extremely bubbly and a great asset to the pub. She couldn't do enough for us and found a rare ice bucket, filled it, tracked us down and delivered it. Wonderful service! A little tatty around the edges and a wipe of the tables wouldn't go a miss but worth it to try and track down the tacky Bill Clinton picture. They also have free parking which is a real bonus around this area. read more

Why, it's that pub Bill Clinton did a wave from the balcony on once!! A very picturesque place to have a drink on a summer's afternoon, its main strength of being right on the canal front offering a great view of the waterways of birmingham and brindley place. Sadly that is also a bit of a drawback as this desirable location is reflected in the prices and also by the fact the canalside walkway is literally on its doorstep which can result in some less than desirable situations if you end up being pestered by passers by for a lighter or spare change. There probably isn't anything the pub can do about this so it might be unfair to mention it, but it can have an effect on an otherwise pleasant pub experience. Aside from that the location is brilliant and the decor and drink/food selection as great as you'd expect so always worth a visit if you're in the city. Despite its very nice setting (right by the canals and the NIA/ Brindley Place) this pub is all about looks. On the first occasion i went there, me and my partner wanted to have lunch there, but they barely had ANY thing left from the menu!! Not even bacon nor chicken! On the second occasion, me and five of my friends turned up around 7pm on a Friday night, the place was nearly empty, some parts of the restaurant area were cordonned off. The staff told us they had no table for 6 (despite there being large tables available in those cordonned areas) and that they were cleaning the tables. Clearly did not want six people's money for a meal and a couple of rounds of drink as no effort was made to accomodate us. Useless and rude staff to complement. AVOID !! for the price you are better off (and served) at a local Weatherspoon's... read more

The Malthouse is a beautiful country pub, set in the heart of Birmingham. It has an open fire, is large and spacious inside, has an upstairs balcony seating area and serves fantastic food. It really is a treat to find this pub just off of Broad Street. It is unknown to many of the Friday and Saturday night Broad Street crowd and thus is still a pleasant place to socialize on the weekend. Staff are friendly and on the last Sunday of the month from Midday onwards they have live jazz, and the occasions I have attended it was most enjoyable. read more

It is beautiful location and that is exactly what I noticed first. It was very busy and my visit there was the part of my project about places in Birmingham to drink and eat, the quality of service and stress control under difficult circumstances. I am qualified chef and waiter with an experience of work in one of the best Western restaurants in France and I have worked in very busy bars and restaurants as well. I had to deal with very complicated situations and would never afoord to be rude to costumer. I am still in shock after visiting Malt house yesterday about 6PM, where one of the servants (barman - waiter?) refused to serve me for some reason, what I am still trying to figure out. As it was the first visit at Malt house, I didnt know how to order, which one of bar tenders is taking orders of food or drinks.... menu wasnt familiar, but - quite simple, english food menu, but there was main issue at the very biginning of the service: everything I was trying to order wasnt available. There was no information about not available food, as it really made the impression that not much was left. When I got confused in slight manner of fussiness (stress management), the waiter just turned away and started serving next person (who had to go trough very similar situation, because it was very difficult to find something to order something what was available) and didnt even serve me a drink which I already ordered when we found available table nr to use (firstable I couldnt order, obviously,my fault wasnt prepared), again, never was asked if I would like to have drink and he could serve next until I decide what I wasnt order for food. And, one of top sentences: you are slowing me down (waiter saying to me). So, when I did find what I could order, after many tries, once I said it, barman, all for sudden, again went back to the same issue, so I shaked my head and just said, just make me drink and order food (was just about to say, lets not go back to this, others are waiting too), he said: YOU KNOW WHAT. I WILL NOT SERVE YOU!!!!! I just couldnt believe first time ever I was in situation where I though, no, no point to explain, as it was really busy and wasnt really point to explain that I am doing project, and they have definetaly failed with points for service in stresfull and busy times with limited food availability. I just left to go to ladies and wash my hands. After I came out to go upstairs as the other guy from our company managed to get his drink before me, I just couldnt believe that my husband was refused to be served as well as another guy who took us there and we are not even very good friends, but it was guy who showed me around, and he couldnt order anything. The reaction of the barman is only acceptable if someone is putting you in the situation of danger or costumer is rude (even that can be sorted out), or swearing or being agressive, shouting. To be honest, I spoke to some witnesses and they said, I didnt even have chance to speak, where he was talking non stop. I was very dissapointed and after I was attending great gig of Elbow in NIA. I had burger there instead. After gig we went to Weatherspoons which was full of costumers and some very drunk man was swinging around the bar and trying to get attention, but you know what? The barmans dealt with it perfectly well and 10 points out of 10 to them. I am hoping that this kind of service isnt common Malt house and there are still some polite staff working, but unfortunatelly quite few websites are pointing at very similar situations in past. Hopefully the staff are not taking advantage of being in such a great location and for that reason being so unprofessional. It was the worst experience of my life for being served so far. I do hope to go back and have nice time as the choice of drinks was quite big and it is spacious, but person like I was ''served'' by yesterday shouldnt work in costumer service or just try to control his emotions! We were at the malt house yesterday and had an awful experience, food was terrible and had to be sent back, wrong drinks served and refused to replace them avoid this pub at all costs many other pubs in the area that serve better food and far better service - clearly never heard the phrase "the customer is always right".
