Despite this bar being practically on my doorstep, I have only been down a couple of times. It's just off St Paul's Square, meaning it's the perfect spot to stop by and grab a quiet drink or some food. Externally it's very pretty. Many of the old features of the building have been preserved, whilst the big glass doors give it a modern twist. It's much the same inside with red brick walls and a laid back, classy vibe with comfortable furniture. It has a bar and a restaurant area inside, but during quiet periods you are allowed to take your drinks into the seating are (normally reserved for diners) and enjoy the generously sized booths. Your lowest priced bottle of wine is £18.95 and a pint will set you back just shy of £4 (so it's not cheap). I must confess, I've never eaten here; but the menu is reasonably priced with most mains being priced between £10 - £15 (steak is a little more, as you would expect). It normally has a couple of ales on tap (I partook of a pint of the Hereford Pale Ale last night which was most pleasant), but the wine list and bar choices are very varied. It seems to attract an eclectic crowd, but mostly locals in the week. On the weekend it can get very busy (so best to book if you wish to eat). If you haven't been before, I would give it a go; it really is a beautiful well kept space. read more

This is one of my favourite places as this quirky venue offers stylish surroundings that are perfect for a pre-Saturday night out on the town or drinking round St Pauls Square. We often choose to start our evening here as we can sit and enjoy a bottle of wine whilst actually being able to talk to each other. and there is always music on in the background. Price wise, it's not the cheapest of bars but when you go out on the weekend you kind of expect a bottle of wine to be around £15 and beers from £3.50. The bar staff are normally pretty quick at serving you and up for a chat too whilst you wait to get served. read more

My first time in this bar and restaurant. My colleague chose it as her meeting place for her maternity leave do. It's located opposite the church in St. Paul's square. It has some tables outside to sit at but they are right on the pavement. Inside, there are two large rooms, my colleague had found a large booth style table to sit at. It is nicely decorated in there. I did like their drinks menu which I think is styled on the old Penguin books? I just had a mojito mocktail which was really refreshing! They do have happy hour on the cocktails which made me think I should have had one as it was hours before I needed to drive!!! Lol never mind!! read more

My visit to the rectory was an impromptu decision for a friends birthday and we were pleasantly surprised. We had a lovely window table and at half six on a Saturday night the atmosphere was just right for a girly catch up and good eats. The service was attentive and the menu selection was a good one, good to the point I was stuck. The girls opted for tapas items and I went for the burger ( in the attempt of stomach lining for a dirty night out) never being one to turn down a brioche bun I was very satisfied with my choice. Although left with major food envy when the halloumi came out and I spent a long while internally sulking about my lack of grilled cheese. I foolishly didn't realise the price of the wine (19.45 per bottle) when ordering it by the gallon for our table but the food was reasonably priced so just about made up for it. We had a very lovely evening and felt remarkably looked after. If I manage to meet Prince Charming on Tinder I will insist that he takes us there on our first date... read more

I've been to the Rectory for many occasions, from after-work drinks to a 'parent friendly' meal. Its great for all occasions and is always buzzing. It can get busy but I've always managed to get a seat or a table. There's a large outdoor courtyard area out back and it has a television where you can watch some games. The location is fantastic just off St Pauls Square which makes it perfect for the JQ and the City. I've eaten many a meal here and it's always been good. The menu is well thought out and I have trouble deciding what I want as there's so much choice! It caters to vegans and those with diary/soya allergies - they are very willing to compromise on dishes. I'm off here for my work Christmas do and can't wait! read more

The Rectory is a bar and restaurant on St Paul's Square, opposite the entrance to the church. It's a pretty classy place and the food is good. The seating in the bar area is fairly high and ok for a couple of friends but round the corner there are some booths which are more comfortable and good for larger groups; downstairs is set up like a typical restaurant and the patio area has picnic seating. It's a nice patio actually although slightly reminiscent of a school/college yard. There's a great range of food at The Rectory but it is a bit pricey. I recommend going in for lunch or a snack before diving in to the mains. The tempura prawns are a pretty good start. read more

This is a very pleasant place to be. It's in a pleasant setting over looking St Paul's church though once inside the view becomes less obvious. The decor is modern, combing comfort with style. I popped in for lunch and had the Club Sandwich, £6.95, I couldn't resist a bowl of fat chips for an extra £1.50 all went down very well. I've been to this place once before during a night out and it certainly provided a lively start to the night. I recently ate some really tasty food at The Rectory in St. Paul's Square, Birmingham. The atmosphere was lovely and the restaurant was flooded with natural light from the summer day outside. I chose the Homemade Battered Fresh Calamari to start. It was delicious but needed a tad more seasoning to be perfect. It came with a light dusting of paprika, a wedge of fresh lemon and a dollop of lemon mayonnaise. Others had the Baked Brie Boxes, which looked delicious and were served with a scrumptious-looking rocket salad. For the main course, I chose Roasted Belly of Pork which was really amazing and came with some black pudding mashed potato and a nice pile of savoy cabbage. Dessert was White Chocolate and Raspberry Brûlée Cheesecake - also really lovely and creamy. Service always came with a smile, although it did take the waiters quite some time to provide our table with jugs of water (about a 15 minute wait for possibly the most simple beverage on offer)! The outside area was great - a few round benches with umbrellas in an industrial-style courtyard. So relaxing! My expectations weren't that high. I had been there before for drinks and I didn't think it had the potential to be such a nice eatery. This time, on a sunny Sunday afternoon, I was delighted with the service, food and atmosphere. It was a little pricey, but they also offered cheaper set menus (such as a gorgeous-looking roast dinner and a starter for about £12). Really thought i'd done a review here last year...anyway...I find this venue on St. Paul's square really inviting. Looking through the big glass doors to the bar with a wealth of booze tends to draw me in;) The decor is quite dark heavy wood in the main bar area and in the dining area there are leather booths which look cozy and inviting with the subtle lighting. It's a good place to go for a pre-dinner drink, which is when I've tended to use it. The place is always quite busy, but I'm not sure is stay all night unless I was with a big group. Then again, you may not get a table or corner to stand. read more

The Rectory is one of the handful of bars located around the periphery of St. Paul's Square, catering to the suited and booted work-types. The interior is quite swanky and offers plenty of comfortable seating. The food on offer changes throughout the day, with a lunchtime menu giving way to a considerably more expensive evening one after work hours. The bar staff are well trained in preparing a wide selection of drinks, although with the large crowds the place gets in there's often little time for pleasantries as they prepare your order and move swiftly onto the next punter. There are drinks offers such as 2-for-1 cocktails on certain nights, and the drinks selection is enough to cater for most tastes. The choice of food is considerable no matter what menu they happen to be cooking off at the time, although I feel that limiting the customer's choice depending on the hour of the day to be a mistake. I've been there on a couple of occasions and more than once ended up leaving after one or two drinks to go in search of food elsewhere. Although the sit-down dining experience is nice, I still think the prices are a little steep for somewhere that is essentially just an upmarket bar. You can't really fault them for milking the lucrative after work business crowd, but that strategy will cost them customers such as myself in the long run. read more

With the backdrop of the church and St. Paul's square few restaurants offer the ambiance that the rectory does. It's great frontage and well designed interior, it is really a great restaurant. I went there on a Sunday and was impressed by the Sunday roast that was clearly cooked fresh and a relatively good size. The wine menu is good although the bar service was a bit slow. I like the rectory, it was always a place for us to go as a team after work. It has the brickwall kind of style, wooden tables. It has a bar and restaurant area. The restaurant provides nice really round tables, perfect for a group and not squeezed next to each other. It's chilled out and the food is quite good too, tried the halloumi there before. It's great especially in the summer when you can sit outside and have a great view at St. Paul's square. I think it's perfect for the afterwork drinks. read more

Visited the Rectory for a friends Birthday meal. Having never heard of it before, I was surprisingly impressed with it. I had the steak which was perfectly cooked as id asked for it, and the cocktails were good. Very reasonable prices too. read more

I really recommend The Rectory to anyone who's looking for good food and drinks for reasonable prices. Situated in St Pauls Square, this bar/restaurant really has my heart. After being introduced to the place through extended family a couple of years back I've been a happily returning customer ever since. Situated at the heart of St Paul's Square, this modest pub is a great find. It is cosy and lively, with a very friendly feel. The staff are pleasant and happy, the seating comfortable and informal. If you decide to grab a bite to eat, the food is of a very high standard and takes only a few minutes to arrive once ordered. Situated by an open green, in a nestled area, this pub is a great change from the usual hustle and bustle of central Birmingham. What is more, the food is extremely good value. For around £5 you can get a great lunch; all in all a thoroughly worthwhile visit. For those who study at the nearby College of Law it is a fantastic place to have some lunch or a quick drink with it being just a couple of minutes walk away.
