Ive seen some great bands upstairs here, there's a really good atmosphere when everyone is waiting to go up before the band start playing. Sitting outside here on a warm summer night when a band are getting ready upstairs might be one of the best feelings I've had on a night out in Birmingham. The bar is well stocked and the staff are quick are making sure everyone is well watered. The down stairs is really chilled out with a great alternative sound track playing some well known hits. Crowds here tend to change a lot depending in the acts playing there but it's all friendly and due to the intimacy of the venue you might even end up meeting some like minded people. The sound upstairs is great for the bands and the stage is very low so it feels like even the band are still part of the crowd witch adds even more intimacy during the shows. Great place to some indie artists play located in the heart of St Paul's Square.

    Bit quiet tonight!

-popped along for the Yelp team pub quiz event. I have been here several times before but hadn't revisited since the 'refurb'. The venue is just off St Paul's Square an is easy to find. Upstairs they have a room that they use for small gigs. outside is a terrace area which is quite spacious with nice views of the church, so pretty good for Birmingham outdoor space. Inside, the venue is quite dark and it looks really spacious, however I know it gets really busy at the weekends so the removal of the booths/bench seats will be welcomed by some. Great atmosphere at the weekend, but fairly dead during the week; having said that, the Monday night pub quiz was good fun!

Again... Another review from 2013! Again... High time for me to go back and give you an update. So, I have probably been to the Actress and Bishop this year more than any other. Largely down to the Smartphone Quiz that's hosted here on a Monday (deffo check it out if you haven't yet), I have taken friends down here numerous times to grab a chilled out drink in a cool atmosphere. The indoor table situation is sometimes a bit bleak when it's busy (there is only 2 or 3 high tables and 2 low tables to sit at), but if you're either a) an earlybird and can grab one or b) not fussed and are happy to perch at the bar then it's a grand little place to grab a beer and catch up. There are drink offers on constantly, meaning you can grab a pint or a glass of wine for under £3 and the music is always on the rockier side (so it's a little more interesting than many of the wine bars around this location). The busiest nights (as you can imagine) are Fridays and Saturdays. It can get very full, but has a buzzing atmosphere and the deejays (mainly focusing on rock and indie) really do pump up a great dance-floor. In the summer, the decking area provides a great place to sit and chill with a group of friends. More often than not, there will be someone with a guitar out here when it's warm (so you can be serenaded whilst you enjoy the heat). The Actress has a late license, so whether it's early evening or late into the night... I can recommend popping in, grabbing a cider and chilling out.

Live music or d.j's seven nights a week (aparently) Student nights on monday and tuesday - which means some drinks only cost £1.00! Downstairs is just your average bar, with a little d.j bit cornered off. Bands upstairs. Alot of people seem to hang outside. oh, an they serve food on weekdays!

Black mould in the mens cubicle wouldn't the health inspectors like to know about this

Good drinks and good bar staff however sanitation is not on point-Black Mould in the toilets could easily cause health defects needs to be checked out immediately!!!!!!!

Of course, a bar is available (of course!) but tee-totallers who enjoy a game of pool are sure to be entertained with over 20 tables available to punters. Unfortunately, as with most pool halls I've encountered (a lot of them that have been Rileys, in fact) it does seem a bit dark and dingy in there - and, given the nature of the place, it does attract large groups of males. I've never encountered trouble in there but a couple of times have received looks off the kind of naughty boys mommy warned me not to play with. Still, people generally keep themselves to themselves and the bar staff are friendly - reasonable pint prices too, so a more than decent way to kill an hour or two when the city's more visceral thrills don't appeal.

There was a complete mixture of people in there, as you can imagine at 4am in the morning. But random none the less, we had a few games of pool, a couple of drinks and had a really good time. I won't pretend and say that I'm a regular pool player as I'm not. In fact, I'd probably go as far as saying that the only time I'm any good is by fluke. The pool tables seemed good condition but again, I'm not a pro! Even though it was very early in the morning, the staff were all chirpy and seemed happy to have such a lively crowd in!

The bouncers also keep an eye on you, if your too drunk, you may find yourself man handled out of the premises. The place does have an authentic Australian feel, hence the name and it's quite a nice friendly establishment. A great location with a Taxi rank right opposite, and also near to the restaurants if your peckish after, and local cash machines nearby. The TV is also on with live sports which creates a nice atmosphere, albeit somewhat loud. Give this a go for your next pub crawl.

Half of us ordered a snack and a drink and were talking when one of the guys from the bar (who we were told by his co-worker was called Levi) came up to us and said "so are each one of you gonna get a drink or are you gonna have to leave?" When asked "why", he began making up some excuses such as "we have to heat it up it costs to heat this place"? Reminder: the bar was nearly empty and our table had ordered drinks and snacks. As we were leaving I still had my drink and I asked "can we have 5 minutes while I finish my drink", to which he started being rude and said "you can stay, they can leave" and just kept refusing to let my friends wait 5 minutes. When asked to deliver further explanation as to why we are being kicked out, he walked away and did not provide any details. We believe it was unfair for following reasons: 1. The bar was nearly empty, therefore we did not take up anybody's space and nobody was waiting to take a seat. 2. We were PAYING COSTUMERS. 3. We were not loud and did not behave inappropriately. There was no legitimate reason to kick us out of this bar. This was extremely rude and we will not be coming back.

Inside it's pretty large and quite nicely laid out. There are plenty of 'groups of friends' type seating and single and multiple occupy tables, plus some bar stools. There's lots of disco lights and a DJ desk. Sky Sports was on, which I see as a bonus, but with the sound off and text on screen instead. That's OK. Something to watch. So they have decent offers for lunch and a comprehensive, pretty much as you'd expect, pub style menu. I was after something quick and filling, so went for the 'classic' Gammon, egg, chips combo for £5. Service was very pleasant and smiley. The food arrived after ,maybe 15-20 minutes so timing was just about OK. Usual mash potato style chips you get everywhere, so zero taste or texture. Good juicy Gammon and nice fried egg. All was fine, even the side salad. Checked out the drinks selection at the very long, well sorted bar and looked impressive. So, despite being in a bit of an industrial wasteland, I had a good stop-over. There were maybe a dozen people there at 1.30pm on a Wednesday, which to me indicates the place probably has a good batch of regulars. Mix of oldies, lunchies, and business meeting types. It's a modern warehouse of a bar space, but in the right mood and at the right time I can imagine you'd have a good time, a good time, oh yeah!
