After running a few errands today, I decided to try this place out for a philly cheesesteak. I looked over the menu board for other options, but decided on the philly anyways. I looked over the board for sides, but could not see fries on the board. I saw onion rings, mozzarella sticks and some other items, but no fries. This seemed strange to me. I placed my order at the register for a philly. He asked if I wanted a meal or just the sandwich. I found out a meal included fries and a beverage. I ordered it as a meal for eat in and paid the $9.45. I got my 16 oz cup for my beverage, which like most quick serve restaurants is self serve. I was surprised at such a small cup, but I am ok with that. If I want more soda, I can get a refill at no extra charge. After a few minutes my order was ready. It was in a to go box. The guy remembered it was for eat in and transferred it to a basket. Now how does this happen? He asked if it was for here or to go. I told him here, but for some reason my receipt shows take out. I take my basket of sandwich and fries to a booth. The booth was cleaned appropriately. The window sills could use a dusting. It could use a fresh coat of paint. While they are at it, would be nice if they select a different color. The yellow is not a decent color to me. Looking at my sandwich I was thinking this is supposed to be a philly cheese. Where's the cheese? I opened the sandwich up a bit and finally saw some. They use swiss on their cheese steaks, but not very much. The beef to bread ratio was perfect. It had plenty of beef and some chopped peppers and onions. The roll was a nice sub roll, lightly toasted. They call it a 7 inch sandwich. I am not so sure it was, but close enough. The sandwich was very good. The fries were decent too. It was a perfect size sandwich for this "formerly big eater". Looking over the take out menu, I saw they had the regular size (7 inch) and a large size(12 inches). I did not see that option on the menu board of a regular or larger size. Why? Seems silly to me. How can I order a large sandwich, if I do not see it available on the board? Doesn't seem like a good business practice to have a customer ask if there is a larger sandwich. A good philly is one where nothing more is needed to make it a tasty sandwich. No mustard, no ketchup, no hot sauce, no mayo. Nothing. The beef, cheese, peppers and onions make it flavorful enough. This did not disappoint in that area except it could use a bit more cheese. I had to look to see if there was any cheese. My disappointments with this place are: 1. Getting the order wrong. I ordered for eat in and it was written up as a to go order. One person, one order, not busy. That should not happen under these circumstances. 2. The take out menu lists a combo at $7.98. A combo is not listed on the menu board. The combo came out to $8.78 plus tax. I understand prices can increase. But get rid of the old printed take out menus and get new ones printed up. If they keep the same layout and adjust the pricing accordingly, it will not cost much to get new menus. The sign says Chicago Style Eatery. It's been 20 years since I was in Chicago, so I can't comment if this a Chicago Style Eatery or not. They have Chicago Style favorites, Chicago Dog, Maxwell Polish, Italian beef, etc. But do these items make it a Chicago Style Eatery? I think not. But others may disagree. I might return at some point for other items knowing full well the incompetence of the owner/management not training the employees the importance of listening to the customer and owner/management being too cheap to order take out menus reflecting the current prices. read more

Taste of Chicago! If you miss Chicago, go to Pappy's for a taste of home. This isn't Chicago STYLE, this is Chicago in St. Paul! Authentic Italian Beef, sausage, and combos. Vienna hot dog on a poppy seed bun and finished with sport peppers. They do hot dog specials wrapped with fries too. Maxwell Street Polish! They make great chicken too. The restaurant design encourages you to eat it and beat it but it is still worth the trip, all the way from Wisconsin. Prices are exceptional, the owner is nice, wants you happy. The Italian Beef Sandwich was good, but not worth the price waiting 15 minutes. I wish the staff made it clearer as to what constituted an "upcharge". Apparently, I paid 50 cents more for cheese and 50 cents more for peppers. To me, the bread was more memorable than the roast beef. They have a huge, delicious Italian beef sandwich here... the au jous and the bell peppers on top are what make it for me. My dad says that their gyro is the bomb too, but I didn't try that. They're pretty brave to have the Bears theme going on in the middle of Viking country...haha read more

This place is amazing. You really won't be disappointed. We have tried many types of food (my favorite being the Philly gyro) and each dish is great! The staff is friendly and the atmosphere is great (a wide variety of customers). It is amazing to see how many people come in to pick up food while we are eating. This place is great, and super cheap. Don't expect any bells or whistles, but this is street food at it's finest! The walleye was great, and I love the seasoning they sprinkle on top of the fish and the fries. Nice old school feel with arcade games and a slushy machine, but I usually grab it to go. Went there for the first time and my friend was thrilled with his Italian Beef Sandwich...fries were good....I ordered a foot long hot dog and when they brought it over it was 2 reg size chicago dogs loaded with everything....I looked at it and said where's my foot long....She said....thats it....I said....I didnt order it with all this stuff on it....she said you have to order it plain....wt???....she took it back and said she would get me a plain one....20 mins later went up to the counter and she forgot to order it....will NOT go back.....!! read more

They claim they have "chicago style food". I was born and raised in Chicago and they don't really hit the nail on the head with that slogan. Stopped in at Pappy's tonight for some takeout. Got a gyro and gyro plate for 2 of us. The gyro plate would have been plenty for the 2 of us. Gyro meat is great, you get plenty of veg, lots of sauce. The fries, which are really good when you eat in, don't translate well to take out. But this place is solid with predictable food and service. read more

Another place on my "I live really close and need to check it out" list. Having been to Uncle Franky's a few weeks prior, I was in the mood to compare the Italian Beef. Good news. Very similar...which means...a damn hot mess of deliciousness. Cheap, tasty and you'll not want to do much of anything for an hour or two afterwards. I'd give the nod to Uncle Franky's mostly due to location/atmosphere. There are some east side thugs that revolve around Pappy's but there's also a lot of cops that tend to eat here. Either way. Bought a Groupon, so we could try this place. My wife is from Chicago. She is always looking for authentic Chicago grub. Italian beef, Chicago dogs, etc. We drove out of our way on Mothers Day. Ordered our food. Showed our Groupon. Employees had no idea what it was. Strike 1. Employee had to call Mgr on phone. Strike 2. Nobody in charge. Over the phone mgr told clueless employees that we needed to have it printed. Sorry, I didn't bring my pocket printer with me. Strike 3. I asked them if they were ok with us walking out without our order that we had already paid for. They stared at me blankly. We told them we would be filing a complaint with Groupon to have them blocked from the system. It's ok because in a couple of months Portillo's will be opening several locations here. They know Chicago food and they have great service. The key with Pappy's is don't be in a hurry and keep it simple. The service is terrible and the person at the register rarely speaks english, so it can be confusing to order. That said, there are certain food items worth the hassle: the chicken wings are amazing, the hot dogs are great, and the gyros are fantastic. They are very slow and I've tried to offset this by calling and placing my order, but they'll just tell you "10 minutes" and when you show up ten minutes later they'll place your order. Not very helpful. If they would clean up their service issues and offer a little more variety this would easily be a 4 or 5 star fast food establishment. read more

This place is great! Awesome food and fast service. Bring cash tho- the owner keeps the credit card tips- which is illegal and super lame. The employees work hard and deserve those tips!!! i was a little disappointed after my visit here. i read some of the other reviews and was excited to try pappy's out. i ordered the italian beef sandwich with cheese, peppers and fries. first of all, the price was a little more than what other's have posted - no big deal. i think i paid around $9 for the sandwich and fries, no drink. the meat was ok but the bread wasn't that great. i'm not very familiar with chicago style italian beef sandwiches, but i don't think it's supposed to be stale bread soaked in the italian beef juice. i'm a fan of moist sandwiches but this was just soggy bread for the most part. i do have to say the fries were pretty good. i was going to give it 2 stars but i'll give it 3 for now. i'll have to come back and try a dog next time, hopefully they will impress me then. read more

We ordered to go and they gave it to us eat in style and when I politely asked for boxes since we ordered to go, the girl at the counter sighed and acted like it was our fault. Because our favorite Italian Beef shop was closed this evening, we decided to stop into Pappy's on Maryland in St. Paul. What a joke! The buns were stale and then they rolled them in juice ... which looked more like grease. I asked for Nacho Cheese on my "Italian Beef Sandwich" and I think that they watered it down to make it last longer or something - there was no cheese to be seen ... except for in the bun itself. The beef is thick, fatty, and lacks the Italian flavor that Chi Town represents. The sandwich comes in some kind of wrapping that is full of grease, after pulling away two layers of this wrapping, I get to the sandwich and it is so sloppy it cannot be held. The bread is a combination of stale and soaked. They do not have a variety of peppers, they have "hot or sweet". The service was slow, we ate in ... but by the looks of it we should have taken it home, it would have been much quicker and more sanitary location. The walls are dirty, the floor is dirty, the bathrooms leave nothing to be desired. As for a rating ... because I had to rate something, it is one ... but really, they are off the scale ... in a Minnesota Cold kinda way! If this is supposed to represent the Chi, they should at least try to get the food right. Then comes the prices ... supposedly the sandwich is a six inch ... it must shrink in all that crap they put it in. The cost ... well, I could get a better deal at Subway! Very disappointed in this restaurant. I am not sure what all the hype is about ... but is sure isn't the food! My recommendation would be to try out the "Twin Cities Best Italian Beef" - on Suburban Avenue and Ruth Street (just about a mile south of Pappy's). read more

I have hit this place a number of times. There are so few options for this type of food in the twin cities. Had the Chicago style dogs along with a Philly cheesesteak. All were great. The Chicago dogs are only $2.69 or $3.99 with fries. Talk about a bargain. The dogs were stacked with peppers, onions, relish, pickle and a tomato slice. Fries were great. Solid food. There fries are thick cut and tasty, wings are seasoned nicely, Catfish is also very good. I had a Philly with fries combo and left pretty happy with it. The Chicago dogs are also great.
