Wait staff was very attentive with water refills, food was quick. One small thing to note - please don't push so hard to clear dishes off the table!! I have loved Indian food all of my adult life, and have had the great good pleasure to travel to India multiple times and to have many Indian friends who have been excellent cooks, so have been able to enjoy marvelously prepared Indian food in many settings. Pappe did not disappoint. Excellent, excellent, excellent. Our meal at Pappe included Palak Paneer, Chicken Tikka Masala, and garlic naan. The Palak Paneer had excellent texture and flavor, and the tofu was absolutely perfect. The Chicken Tikka Masala had marvelous flavor and the chicken was also prepared perfectly. The rice was very good as expected. The only slight distraction was that the garlic naan was not quite as good as I've had elsewhere and was just a little cooler than would have been ideal. The quality of food was really worse then ever we had. We ordered dal makhani, Amritsar kulacha, pickle onion and raiyta. Unfortunately we didn't checked the food before picking up.The quantity of Dal was 6 spoons of dal for which they charge $20. So we never felt so cheated ever before. On top of that we requested pickles onion they charged $5, which usually comes complementary with the food. And they put 6spoons of chautney we don't what it was and they passed it on as Raiyta. Amritsari kulcha was just like normal naan. So our suggestion, you think 10 times before you go there. We were initially sceptical about getting authentic Indian food here but we were simply blown away by the food here. They did a great job of making food spicy instead of putting in just the hot sauce which a lot of restaurants tend to do. For those looking for authentic taste, I would recommend this restaurant *very* highly. The kulcha was oh so soft!, matar paneer was such an enticing medley of flavors with paneer being super soft like it's supposed to be, and rabdi tres leches.. I won't even get started about that! 18 months (and 3 or 4 return visits) later, still 4.5 stars. Went once in person, the rest delivered by Caviar. Caviar delivery continues to be unreasonably quick -- 20-30 minutes from order to door even when traffic should dictate otherwise. Lamb vindaloo -- outstanding, solid 5 stars for depth of flavor, scorching heat, and lean but tender lamb. Lamb gosht -- similarly awesome but without the scorch. Raita -- oddly pink (perhaps died by misplaced carrots or tomato) but tasted great and still a solid portion for $3. Mango pickle -- did not last a year in my fridge, but only because I gave away spoonfuls to guests. Dal fry (yellow dal / dal tarka) -- this is the loser. Unfortunately, as I feared, this has lost its spice and kick and has devolved into a sort of plain-jane lentil dish. Will order once more in the future to see if it was a one-off. read more

I was here the second night Pappe was open and going to try and keep focused on the food. which was the real winner of the evening. Wanting to try a little bit of everything we got a starter,a few types of naan, the garlic and the Kashmiri, the mushroom dish, as well as two different curries, the vindaloo lamb and the palak shrimp. It was a lot of food, and everything was well prepared, spaced out well, and had wonderful flavors. The dishes were also seemingly affordable for the area. Since as mentioned this was only the second day they were open there were a few glitches in the service. I would assume that these kinks get worked out and the staff seemed eager to ensure a wonderful dining experience, even if things didn't go as planned. Wow this has got to be some of the best Indian food in DC. It is very expensive, but definitely worth it for the portions. I always have leftovers enough for another meal. I'm a vegetarian and I always get the Palak Paneer with green chili nan, and it is DELICIOUS together. The green chili nan is nice and spicy the Palak Paneer is super flavorful. I'm boring so I always get the same entre, but I've also had the aloo papdi chaat as an appetizer, which I loved and is probably my favorite appetizer out of all the vegetarian ones Pappe offers. My partner has gotten a lot of different dishes (lamb, goat, chicken tikka), and he's loved every dish as well. read more

We ordered the gobi manchurian and naan, but the two memorable dishes were the palak paneer, which was incredibly creamy, and the bhindi-do-pyaza, which had a great combination of texture and flavor. Great Indian food spot! Went for dinner with me and my wife, which it was perfect for a nice date dinner with great service and food. The ambiance: really nicely set up restaurant with easy check in, and very cool decorations/wall art. The bar area probably seats about 15 people, and is first come first serve if you don't want to wait on a table. Definitely a good date spot or for small groups (less then 8). The service: was great, everyone from the hostess to our waiter was very courteous, professional and nice. The waiter was very knowledgable about the dishes and drinks, was able to answer our questions without breaking a sweat. The drinks: great selection of customized cocktails with an Indian twist. I had the Delhi (sort of like an old fashioned/manhattan type drink), VERY good. And my wife had the non-alcoholic lime soda, which she loved and said was refreshing. The food: a very thorough selection of North Indian cuisine. We had the veggie samosas, which were great with that thicker breaded outer layer. For entrees I would HIGHLY recommend the Baingan Bartha. Not a common dish to find at Indian restaurants, but very well done here. We also got the Palak Paneer, with the paneer being superb. They also offer "side" portions of the entree which is nice if you have less people or want to share more options. The one downside to the food was the mushroom truffle naan was a little odd. It had full on, large mushrooms on it and cheese (which the menu did NOT mention). It tasted more like a flat bread. So I would probably go back to get the staple garlic naan to see how it was. The other downside with the food was the Gulab Jamun, which was slightly cold. I usually recommend this warm and soft to go with ice cream (which they did have). All in all: A great, nicely decorated North Indian restaurant for a nice date night out or with a group, where you can enjoy a selection of craft cocktails, variety of Indian dishes from appetizers to biryani to entrees and dessert. I don't eat Indian food often so I've only ever tried The Bombay Club. Pappe was very good. Not as fancy as the Bombay Club but just as good. Came for lunch and ordered the vegetarian thali. We'll, I went recently and when I received the check, I though it was kind of high and it did not have and itemized list of what I purchased. The waitress told me she gave herself a 22% tip, which I wasn't happy about, and the total still seemed pretty high. We only had a party of 2+ baby. After adding up each purchase, I realized they overcharged is $6! The 22% tip and overcharge are reasons I will never go back. Too bad they lost consistent customers trying to make extra $. Food: 4 Service: 4 Ambiance 4 Overview: Rasika-level food, at times maybe slightly more interesting, but in a less stuffy (and louder) environment. Food (best to worst): The sides of fried okra and the grilled eggplant are both surprisingly great, with interesting spicing. These made us recall items we ate at Maydan, but they were spicier and more fun here. The branzino was soft and buttery. One diner loved the ghee flavor, while the other found it a bit overpowering - so this dish largely depends on whether you like ghee. The bone-in goat has a great sauce, and is pretty tender, but could benefit from having slightly more meat (and slightly less bone). The fish 65 appetizer was good, albeit too spicy for some diners. Reminiscent of a spicy, more interesting version of filet-o-fish. The aloo papdi chaat appetizer is not incredibly dynamic, but feels relatively refreshing, especially in contrast to spicier items. The crab pav tastes like a crab cake, but with a nice, softly subtle spicing. The only flaw here was that the bun was on the soggy side, lacking a proper pre-grill before service and being too mushy. The naan and rice are both just fine. Service: Service was great. Our server was attentive, helpful, and funny, leading across the better choices on the menu. Water refills were consistent. Ideally they'd have bigger water glasses, given the spice level. Ambiance: Comfortable. The only downside is the majority of tables for 2 people are very close to each other, so it's hard to have a conversation without hearing your neighbors. It was also generally loud, but we were there on a Saturday night though - so that's likely as loud as it gets. In sum, it may not be ideal for those who don't want to speak in raised voices and are traveling in packs of two, but otherwise good for larger groups or packs of 2 who don't mind the noise. read more

Ordered delivery from here yesterday evening and as an avid Bombay Street Food (BSF) fan, here's my opinion: - Gobi Manchurian: excellent flavor, however you'll get 4 pieces of this delicious app for $8, however for comparison, you get double the amount from BSF for the same price. - Baingan Bartha - delicious creamy eggplant dish with flavors of onion and spices and pairs very well with the garlic naan - Butter Chicken - could be better - would rate this 3.5/5 overall. The portion for delivery was better than what most have said on these reviews, however it was definitely less flavorful from other Indian restaurants I've been to. The consistency of the sauce was more watery than what I'm used to and was more mild than what I would have liked. - Garlic Naan - soo good! Great with everything we ordered. Pro tip would probably be to order the bread basket to try all of the naan. Overall, we enjoyed this meal but will need to try this place out in person, as other reviewers have said that the restaurant is very cute and the food tastes better in person. The spice levels were perfect, and we were informed that some dishes just really come out naturally at a certain spice level. Anything can be made spicy, just be mindful they don't use the American rating level of spice....it's an Indian restaurant. They charge 22% service charge which all goes directly to the FOH staff and their support staff, which I'm more than happy to pay and even tip a bit extra on top. read more
