We went on a Saturday evening without a reservation and the lady in the front said it's an hour of wait time. We gave our names and went out but she called us in 15 minutes saying our table is ready. She was not very polite to us. Coming to the food, we ordered 4 items out of which two are ok and two are very good so it's a mixed feeling. Samosa-2.5/5, they were very oily Aloo Pandi chat-2/5, it doesn't have the tang flavor in it. Chilli Naan- This is excellent, if you are going here this is a must. Be careful it is spicy. Been meaning to go there for a while as I heard that it was different in the sense that it was like true Delhi restaurant food, especially the street food (or appetizers). In summary it was average and it was the run of the mill Indian restaurant, or maybe not even that. The Gobi Manchurian had a tasty sauce but the batter was hard in some places where it almost hurt to bite into, the seekh kabab was very good, and our aloo papri chaat didnt ever show up (we realized while almost through our entrees). The Laal Maas was ok, the butter chicken and daal Makhani were good, but i wouldn't say that it was any better than most Indian restaurants. The worst part of the whole meal was the assorted bread basket. All three naans, lacha were soaked in oil. I get that naans have butter/oil on them, but these were soaked. Pappe is a buzzy spot for delicious and elevated Indian fare near Logan Circle. We stopped in rather late on a Saturday evening, and enjoyed a couple glasses of white at our cozy table. For starters, we shared the zippy kachumber salad served in a pappadum bowl, and an order of my favorite Indo-Chinese dish, gobi manchurian. The gobi was perfection, but buyer beware, extremely spicy, making for a nice kick to start our meal. For our entrees, she went with the nicely-seasoned paneer tikka, whereas I had the velvety vegetable korma, served alongside rice and a plentiful basket of plain and green chili naan. We came in an hour before close and the entire restaurant (the host, waitress, and bartenders) could not have been more accommodating to us telling us to enjoy ourselves and take our time. Rasika always tops the lists of best Indian restaurants in DC, but for modern Indian cuisine with extraordinarily consistent quality, I favor Pappe. My favorite menu items tend to be the Gobi Manchurian and Aloo Papdi Chaat for appetizers and the Palak Paneer and Wild & Wonderful Mushroom Biryani for mains. The Saffron Kheer and Rabadi Tres Lachee are amazing desserts, but I don't recommend ordering both at the same meal (their flavors are remarkably similar). You can't beat the taste of Pappe, and the ambiance makes the restaurant the perfect spot for a romantic dinner or laid back work lunch. read more

From the moment you enter you are greeted for a kind host, and the service was great Thank you! Queen? The place is very nice, beautiful decorated, I like the servers uniform shirts very unique. The food, mua *chef kiss*, it was really good food, lamb samosas, lamb chops, the fish everything o good. The desserts let me a little to wish for because I expected something more typical but instead there was a variety of desserts where they incorporated Indian flavors or spices, We only tried the tres leche and it was very good, but again I wanted something new and more typical from India. Great Food, excellent service! Will be back here again! We were there around Noon on a Saturday recently. Great time to go to this restaurant. That morning we caught the owner or Chef of this restaurant on Fox 4 DC by accident. Motivated us to give it a try. They did not have the usual weekday buffet since it was a Saturday but it was a la carte ordering. They seated us quickly since it wasn't crowded at all. They also offered us free Masala Chai (bottomless cup that too!) and it was very good. Two of us ordered the Vegetarian Thali and others ordered other things A La carte. The food was very rich but tasty! And a lot of it. We got boxes to go when done. The Bhaingan Bharta in the Thali, Khadai Paneer and Palak Paneer were excellent. The Bhaingan Bharta had a smoky taste of Eggplants that was out of this world! Great food, great service, lovely ambiance! Will be back again soon! read more

This is my new favorite Indian food restaurant in the city! I visited for Brunch. For starters I ordered the drink with Elderflower, which had a kick to it, but was really good. We also ordered veggie Samosas, which were so moist, not fry, and probably the best samosas I've had ever. My friend and I shared the Vegetarian platter, ALL of the dips were amazing. My friend ordered spicy chicken, which she loved. I also ordered the mushrooms, which were really tasty. I would definitely recommend this place, and can't wait to try for dinner! read more

The food here was good. We got the shishito pepper app which has a really nice grill taste to it. For entrees we got the chicken korma and the tasr gosht. Really really liked the taar gosht. Great flavor and consistency. We ate outside and kind of felt like we were in the traffic. Kind of wish they moved our table towards the sidewalk and swapped it with the servers area. I was irked to be denied a walk-in table despite ample empty seats. I'm a frequent traveler and I have a lot of unplanned dinners for one, and whatever policy it is that requires this sort of practice is never going to meet my approval. In their defense, those tables did fill during my time there, leaving me at the crowded bar, with access to the full menu. The samosa and dal I ordered certainly didn't lack for flavor. The lime soda wasn't quite as good for me; the hint of salt the menu promised was too strong of a hint for my liking. Getting service at the bar was tough, and I was around for longer than I wanted to be. The menu didn't offer anything other Indian places don't, and while I liked the food, I am unable to see the reason this place has gotten so much press. Okay! I have been here twice -- once for lunch with my girlfriend, and then another occasion for happy hour. They're a little different from the usual in the fact that their sign is vertical and next to the door, versus being above the building like most other places. I have definitely walked by it by accident before. Once you step inside though, you realize immediately how awesome the vibe is. The cultural decor is quite lovely! For my first time, we were seated near the back for lunch. We were debating whether to order two separate entrees or order one. We decided on one, and thank goodness we did. It was so much food! Not only that, but it was DELICIOUS! We went with the Maharaja, and all of the parts of this dish were wonderful when combined with the rice and naan! It was a nice little lunch and we both left full. Now, happy hour is only at the bar, so don't expect to come with a big group of people! But the happy hour options are quite pleasant! For example, the drinks all have a unique and creative flavor to them, like the Teen Bavakuf, which has spices and tequila, but it's amazing! I also ended up ordering veggie samosas and some other snacks and I absolutely enjoyed them. I would definitely return to this spot, as the food is really delicious and I enjoy the vibes. read more

I visited here when I was in DC once before and then came here again by happenstance. When I realized it, I was immediately happy. Very good food and nice drinks. I had done an UberEATS pickup here a few weeks ago and was delighted to have found a new Indian restaurant to try. I bookmarked it here on my Yelp account. However, I did a pickup there this evening and when I asked if I could use the restroom, the hostess told me that they were "for customers only." What?! I've never been denied the use of a bathroom at any restaurant where I pickup food. Where do they think we go? In the street?! I will never give them my business and I hope others, who care about the people who deliver their food, will stay away, as well. Update: I would've happily given them my name and number for contact tracing purposes. It took me 30 minutes to complete the delivery and find another restroom to use. Delivery drivers are helping restaurants weather this pandemic. We deserve better. read more

I had an overwhelmingly positive experience dining at Pappe. I was seated promptly without a reservation around 7:30 pm on a Saturday night. I ordered the pista chicken korma, naan and chutney sampler flight, and chicken tikka. All were delicious! The pista chicken in particular with really unique and flavorful. Of the chutneys, I found the pumpkin one to be the best! In addition to the fantastic food and service here, I enjoyed the restaurant's ambiance. It was dimly lit (but not totally dark!) and had beautiful decor. Not to mention, Pappe is in a great location on 14th street (as long as you're not planning on driving - parking it tough!). Probably the worst Indian food I've ever had. Overpriced, super small portions and no flavor whatsoever. BUTTER CHICKEN: 5 small pieces of chicken that were full of fat and gristle and was completely inedible. It was absolutely disgusting. Unfortunately I uploaded a photo of this disgusting mess (sorry it's a really unappetizing photo). The butter chicken curry also tasted very sour. PALAK PANEER: No spinach flavor - how is that possible? Cheese was also flavorless. What did I just eat? ROTI: So dry. Ridiculously dry. Inedible. Definitely skip this place it's horrible. I went in to meet a friend tonight for the tail end of happy hour at the bar. The very nice I think Hispanic bartender who was serving the not so busy tables walked up and asked my order. I ordered a beer and some chicken that was on happy hour. I'm just sitting there minding my own business when tall white blonde with tattoo sleeves man bun bartender walks up and asks what I want, and I say well, I ordered already (like 20 min ago) but I did order a beer and it hasn't come out yet. He then proceeds to ask if I'm okay to be there and practically tries to throw me out because he didn't wait on me and how could I have ordered without being delusional until Hispanic bartender comes in and is like yeah sorry I forgot her beer (the keg I think was being changed). White man bun dude was such an a*hole I will never come back. I tried to tip out the Hispanic bartender because he was very nice and cool but apparently they pool tips. read more

Pappe, a case study in why customer service is SO important. If you go to Rose's Luxury or Gravitas, you will be treated like a VIP no matter who you are. The fact that you're a paying customer deems you respect and genuine hospitality. Then there's Pappe. On a Friday afternoon during the tail end of lunch service, my wife and I walked into Pappe. The hostess was on her iPad and it took a minute for her to look up. She looked annoyed we were there and just looked at us forcing us to ask if there was room (obviously, there was room! Literally there were three other people in the room). She acted like we were the biggest inconvenience to enter the restaurant. Okay, everyone has a bad day, so perhaps she just needs the weekend to rest. We were seated near the window and we waited. Ten minutes passed. Twenty minutes passed. Finally, we approached the hostess asking if a server was assigned our table. She annoyingly walked to the back to check and informed us the server was getting plates for us. We waited. Five minutes. Fifteen minutes. Nothing. My wife then took things into our hands and went back to see where our server was. Five minutes later he came rushing to our table and said, "Are you in a hurry or something?" Maybe he was awkwardly trying to play it off, but in a hurry or not, waiting for 30+ minutes to be acknowledged at a allegedly top restaurant is just rude. Once we were finally served, we ordered lunch and that did come out pretty fast. My wife ordered the shrimp curry with onion naan. It was decent, but not the best Indian in DC (for that go to Huntington to Dishes of India). I ordered butter chicken, regular naan and mango chutney and I was impressed. It was the best Indian I've had in the city of DC with the exception of the naan (it was just okay). The mango chutney comes in a healthy portion and tastes like red pepper flakes and honey, making it unique and very tasty. We waited for our bill. Waited some more. I then grabbed the waiter and handed him our card. All in all, the food was good if you order the butter chicken, but for the service, we're unlikely to go back. A three star rating is for the delicious butter chicken, nothing else. read more

I am Indian American. I try not to hold Indian restaurants to ridiculous standards, but this was a bit of an upsetting experience. I was excited when I saw their menu to see so many chaat items and also uttapam, so I assumed this was somewhere I needed to order food from. I didn't order those chaat items because I ordered for take out (so perhaps those are good and I wouldn't know). But ultimately, Indian food should be made to share. I was given maybe 5 slices of achari paneer for $26. And what I was expecting, "achari paneer" should have been a paneer dish made with pickling spice. Instead I got a pretty bland paneer covered in oil with a sad oil salad on the side. In addition I got a kulcha. $6 for one slice of bread. Yikes My housemate ordered Pista Korma, which I had a bit of. That was easily one of the better tasting dishes but still had the same issue of portion sizes. I got so mad during my meal I ended up ordering from bombay street food mid meal. It's better food for half the price. I'm not going to knock businesses for charging what they're worth. There are plenty of white owned businesses in DC that over price their food as well. But I do feel like I need to speak up and spare my fellow brown people of an upsetting experience. Especially if you're vegetarian I don't think the food was worth it. As a complete aside, if you're reading this, give Spice 6 and their dosas a try instead! read more

Ate here on a Sunday evening with spouse and grown daughter. Crowded, we had a reservation so all good. Seated Immediately, good. Nice atmosphere, great location. Immediately served water and waiter came to get drink orders, good. We were ready to go on our orders. Happy hour ends at 5 pm but only applies to some drinks, so I got a happy hour IPA beer. Spouse also wanted a happy hour beer, her chosen beer was out, waiter suggested another type. Turns out this was not on the happy hour list so no discount. Hmmmmm. We ordered fish chittnad, veggie korma, Punjabi aloo gobi, and naan (onion and garlic). All great. We explained to waiter that spouse cannot have spicy food. Turned out well. Other reviews said the food here is not spicy. Just try eating here with my spouse and you'll see instantly which foods are spicy! She could eat all but the fish dish, and even then only by sipping her beer after each bite. Bill was $130 for three people including 2 beers, so not great value but delicious food. Scores 4 food, 5 location-service- atmosphere, and 3 for value. Overall score of 4. I can see returning, but there are dozens of great Indian restaurants in the area that I would try (or return to) before returning here. read more

What a treat this Indian spot was. My friend managed to grab reservations for a late dinner and we couldn't resist. First off, we were greeted by a lovely waitress that knew the menu extensively, and gave great suggestions on dishes to get. It was suggested that each person order an entree to share amongst the table. We ordered black Dahl, yellow Dahl, chicken vindaloo, and some paneer dish. The dishes come with sides of rice and we each ordered a side of naan. The flavors of naan included garlic, green chile, onion, and Kashmir which was a sweet cherry flavor. I truly found all the dishes to be great with the exception of the paneer, which just tasted like gravy. All the naan breads were wonderful though. The restaurant was small but had a lovely decor and beautiful bar. The service was quick and prompt, and the food was extremely filling. Our slight complaint was that 3 of the 4 us diners are 5'9 and taller. We were seated at a booth that had extremely tight space and forced us to play footsy with each other throughout our meal.
