It's been a long time since I've had Hainanese chicken, and PappaRich does it better than the places I've had in the past. It's a small little restaurant that can get packed during peak hours. They have your usual fare of Malaysian cuisine, but everyone I see will include the classic Hainanese chicken and rice in their order. Since the chicken is steamed without any overpowering spices, the texture is important to get right. You want tender chicken, but not overly so to the point of mushy. This type of chicken needs to have the right amount of "bite", and I think they hit the nail on the head. That paired with the flavorful sauce and rice makes a great combination. I also tried their beef rendang, and while it was tasty, the portion of beef seemed very small to me. However, I came for the chicken, and it did not disappoint.
Love this place! Very Authentic and food out at an appropriate time. Price is very fair and I would definitely bring my family here. Staff was very nice and soft spoken . Both the noodle and rice dish tasted great. Must get is their skewer appetizer and Roti!! Restaurant is spacious and looks clean
First time trying Pappa Rich had the Curry Chicken Laksa..Broth was savory had great seasoning! The Beansprouts added great texture, noodles were cooked perfectly Al dente bouncy and chewy. I noticed same Malaysian owners at this location since they recently shut down other location across the street. With my meal I ordered Togo for a friend-- I did the Hainam chicken and the Chicken Roti canai
PappaRich is my favorite Malaysian restaurant in the Houston area. I've been going to them since they first opened, and they have always been consistent and never failed to impress. The restaurant is small and clean. The servers are always nice, and the foods are always delicious. I recently stopped by around 5pm on a Saturday for an early dinner for two. It wasn't busy yet when I first arrived, but more and more customers started coming in as it got closer to dinner hours. I always have to order my two favorites: Steamed Hainese Chicken Rice set and the Roti Canai with Beef Rendan. The steamed Hainese chicken here are some of the best in Houston area. It's always super tender and flavorful. I absolutely love the roti canai here. It's always light, fluffy, and just right, and I don't think anywhere else makes them as good as PappaRich.
PappaRich is a popular Malaysian restaurant that originated in Malaysia, and has grown to over 100 locations worldwide. It's one of the only 2 US locations, with the other being in New York. You can visit them on Bellaire Food Street. It's a clean restaurant. We walked in and were immediately greeted and sat by a nice woman. We came because we were craving one thing only: Hainanese Chicken. They also have the fried option as well, but we decided on steamed. We got the half chicken and it was enough to feed 2 people. The chicken was so tender. The chicken rice was cooked perfectly, so moist and flavorful. The chicken, rice, some scallion ginger, a bit of sriracha: the perfect bite! We also had the mixed skewers (beef and chicken). The dipping sauce was good. I prefer the chicken over the beef skewers. The beef skewers were a bit tough. I wasn't the biggest fan of the seasoning they used. However, if I were to get these again, I would just opt for the chicken skewers only. If you never had Malaysian food, I recommend giving this place try. I will definitely be back to order the fried hainanese chicken.
We were in the area and thought to give PappaRich a try. It has been a couple years since we went there. Not busy as it was relatively late. We ordered the sizzling tofu with seafood and a seafood char kway teow (flat noodle). They were both ok. Thought there should have been more tofu (10 pieces total). Other places offer a bit more tofu. The seafood char kway teow as decent. They do have the sliced chili with vinegar that compliments the noodle dish and give it a kick. Staff were friendly and the restaurant well decorated and reminded me of Kuala Lumpur.
A solid 3.5 stars for the food but I'll round it up to a 4 because our server Angie was nice and accommodating. We got there at 12 noon and shockingly it wasn't busy at all. The food also came out a little too fast, which I'm not complaining about but I think my beef rendang wasn't a fresh batch. I understand that this dish takes a long time to make because they slow cook their beef but I think it was out for a while. We started off with their curry chicken roti. The roti was soft & it was fresh. The sauces that were on the side were not good. I prefer to just dip it in the beef rendang. The chicken itself was forgettable & dry. I could've just ordered a plain roti. For our mains we got the beef rendang & salted egg prawns. The sauce on the rendang was delicious but the beef itself wasn't that tendered and melt in your mouth. & it was kind of dry too. They either cooked it too long or the batch wasn't fresh. The prawns were lightly fried and the batter was seasoned to perfection. The salty egg sauce added extra flavor to the dish. Overall, it was a good experience. Food was solid, service was great and the place was clean & well put together. Will I come back? Yes.
My friend and I were craving roti and we were nearby, so we decided to stop by. We came around 6:30 PM and service was so quick. There were only 1-2 servers but they were so attentive and helpful. The food came out relatively quickly and was so good! This was my third time here and I have ordered the roti every time. The roti was made perfectly with a combination of crispness and softness. I could order just 3 portions of just the roti 10/10. As for the noodles, I wish there were more protein in it but I couldn't complain because the sauce and the texture of the noodles were so good. They were chewy and thick, holding onto the sauce well. They had a rich soy- sauced flavor 8.5/10!
This place is legit! Hainan chicken rice - The chicken was very tender, perfectly done. The rice however lacks flavor. Sauce was good too! Laksa - Beware that it may be too spicy for some. I loved it. The ingredients were great and the soup flavor was intense and rich. It already have fish ball so unless you want prawns, get the extra otherwise, chicken is a little cheaper. Good noodles. Taste like the authentic one. Chow kwai teo - The flavor was very good. It's not curry based unlike some Chinese restaurant just add cut powder. This one was authentic. Luck Texan, this place is legit.
If you're looking for a Malaysian restaurant, this is a good place to try. The food is very good especially ghe sizzling tofu, water spinach in sambal sauce, fried calamari in salted egg abd even the rotis. The place is not that big but adequate, the server are very friendly and service is fast.
We were in Bellaire, this place hit the spot! I really wanted hainanese chicken and they have a little set that was PERFECT. If you want 1/2 chicken, there is a larger dish that you can order. We paired this with a mushroom and veggie stirfry. What I love about this place is that they don't do added MSG and if you want, you can ask for less sauce or less salt and the food was just the right level for me. The hainanese chicken set comes with 3 dipping sauces and a bowl of the most delicious flavored rice! I really enjoyed the ginger oil sauce on the rice... YUM. We didn't have to wait long after we sat down to order and after we ordered the food came out pretty fast. Wonderful service. You know the food is on point when you have the perfect silence. The hubs noticed we weren't talking at all because we were so engrossed in the food, LOL!
My cousin's uncle (on her dad's side) recommended we go here since I've never been before and they said this was their favorite spot for malaysian food. My cousin who had been to Singapore said she liked this place also because their food reminded her a little of the food she had in Singapore. We came for a Sunday lunch and it was somewhat busy, they had several tables open but the groups that came in were of at least 4 people. There was probably 1-2 people serving but I only saw 1 person taking orders and she was going to each table that just got saw to take everyone's orders on her Ipad. We had asked for water and that took a while to get brought out to us but eventually we got cups of water and bowls/ utensils then the food started coming out. We had also asked for small sharing bowls 3 times to 2 different people that never got brought out because we wanted to share the Laksa but eventually someone brought out some bowls when they saw we were trying to share the Laksa. I'd come back here but maybe try to go on a non-busy hours of operation so we can potentially get better service.

Came around 630pm before rush hour on a weekend. The restaurant is simple yet modern. Our waiter greeted us and gave 1 complimentary salad. I find it odd that they only serve 1 salad dish for 2 people. Nonetheless it was good. We ordered: Chicken roti curry - pretty good. The roti (you get 2 roti) was so buttery and fresh. I love the smell of it. They gave good amount of chicken and the other two dipping sauce were ok. The red one taste kind of like bbq ketchup and the yellow one taste starchy like potatoes. Fried hainese chicken - I've had the boiled style at other places and was surprised to see a friend version so I had to try it. I love the fried style so much better. The flavor is on point and the skin was crispy. Only complaint is that they only served 1 small rice bowl..and typically when eating these food it's family style so the other person and I shared half the rice bowl.. Shrimp flat rice noodle - this dish is simple and personally taste ok. I wouldn't get it again because I feel I can get it anywhere else. Nothing amazing about it. Coffee - omg this drink is amazing! I describe it as hot chocolate mix with cafe du monde style. One sip and I was hooked! I had to get one to go for the road. I'm saving the best for last. Our waiter was exceptional. The guy with the glasses provide amazing service and is very attentive. Made the dining experience so great. read more
PappaRich (Malaysian Food) @ Bellaire. I went here with my co-workers for lunch. Pretty decent. I order the lunch special R1 Hainanese Chicken Rice Set $11.95 4/5 stars. I request the dark meat. My co-worker got the R21 Fried Hainanese Chicken Rice Set $12.95 3.5/5 stars $12.95. I tried the fried one and it's pretty good but alittle on the dry side. At least the sauce made it better. Not sure what to compare too bc this is the first I ever tried it fried. read more

There are two PappaRich restaurants in the US, the other being in NYC. We are lucky to have one here in Houston and you must try it especially if you have never had Malaysian food. Have never seen a huge crowd inside so service is always sufficient. Standout dishes were Char Kway Teow and the sizzling tofu. Not sure how it compares to Banana Leaf but I will continue to come here to satisfy any Malaysian food cravings! read more
Dined here on a Thursday at noon and was seated immediately. I was sad when Mamak shut down, but Pappa Rich has similar dishes and everything was so good! I ordered: Teh Tarik drink: I asked for less condensed milk, it tastes like light chocolate milk 3 layer tea : super strong! Curry chicken roti : the roti is the frozen pratha bread from Hmart, I was hoping for fresh roti. But the lentil sauces that came with it is good. The chicken curry was just ok. Fried chicken nasi lemak : chicken was fried to perfection and I like the fried anchovies and coconut rice that came with it Char Kway Teow beef : SO GOOD! I'm still dreaming about it. Sizzling tofu : very good flavors! Must order! read more
Food: 2.5 Service: 4 Cleanliness: 4 My friends and I came here on a whim because we wanted to try something new. We shared a few dishes: -Curry Fish Balls: Exactly as it sounds. It was okay, it's basically fish balls that you'd see in hotpot but with curry. -Roti Canai (Beef Rendang): The beef was a bit dry for my liking but my friends enjoyed it. It wasn't as soft and tender as I expected it to be. The roti was good, but I've had better. -Mixed Satay Skewers (Beef + Chicken): I only tried the beef and thought it was good but nothing special. I liked how it was paired with fresh cucumbers and purple onions. -Curry Lamb: It was decent. Meat was tender but I wasn't a fan of the flavor. -Sizzling Tofu: My favorite out of everything. The tofu piping hot and was silky soft on the inside. -Banana Leaf Stingray: VERY fishy. The flavor was decent but my friends and I weren't fans. We couldn't even eat half of it. Overall, this establishment is clean, the servers sprayed hand sanitizer on our hands when we sat down and before we paid the bill. Restrooms were clean as well. Service was good, but disappointed in the food. read more
Perfectly lovely lunch I'm not familiar with many Malaysian dishes. This was recommended by a friend. He had the Hanian fried chicken rice set. I had the chicken roti appetizer. We both really enjoyed the kimchi. It was sweeter than kimchi I've had before & not very spicy. The restaurant was new. It was very clean & the colors were bright & cheery. Service was very prompt. read more

PappaRich is a beloved chain and ambassador of Malaysian cuisine that began abroad in 2006 and has since spread globally. I love Malaysian food so was excited to pop into the Bellaire location for dinner. The room is spacious with neat wooden paneling, lime green chairs, and small potted plants lining the wall. The menu is extensive and contains pretty much all the classics. Curry Fish Balls - excellent value at ~$6 for nine spongy fish nuggets soaking in a drinkable spicy and rich curry broth. Great start. Roti Canai - this flaky, stretchy, and multi-layered flatbread is a must, and you'll want to get two orders if you have 4+ people in the party. The appetizers are small, but both the curry chicken and beef rendang options were strong and worth sampling. Nasi Goreng (Beef) - more famously associated with Indonesia, this fried egg-topped rice dish was somewhat quiet in terms of taste without much in the way of smokiness. The beef skewer was flavorful but yielded just a couple bites. Chicken Curry Laksa - an oily and zesty soup with all kinds of goodies swimming around like tofu and fish balls. Enjoyable but missing some depth/complexity on the palate. Char Kway Teow (Seafood) - think of the Malaysian cousin of Thai pad see ew, another savory and oily flat noodle preparation. Lovely presentation in a large plate over a banana leaf with bean sprouts mixed throughout, but I rate this one a solid OK. Mix Vegetables in Claypot - textural variety in the form of tofu skin, cabbage, string beans, tomatoes, etc. in a piping hot vessel full of thin spicy broth. Less fatty with more nuttiness/sourness than the Curry Laksa, but they are similar enough to where I would maybe pick one. Curry Lamb - thick bone-in chunks of lamb in thick, pungent gravy. This dish probably won't be for everyone because it did have gamey and earthy notes; in fact, it kind of tasted like liver to me. My takeaway was that everything was decent, but nothing struck me as particularly exceptional. PappaRich is certainly a worthy introduction to Malaysian and Southeast Asian cooking, but the flavors here were flatter than they could have been and some of the zing was missing. read more
They were packed when we came for lunch so it took about 10 minutes to be seated. We were immediately served a small plate of kimchi which was really tasty. We had beef roti and beef skewers as an appetizer and for our entrees we ordered the Hainan chicken and fried Hainan chicken. Both versions were good. The waitstaff was very attentive and the prices were reasonable. read more
Sang, our waiter was fabulous! His impeccable service made my first time here even more enjoyable!!! I wanted to try the stingray. But they were out due to it being such a popular dish. We ordered the roti canai, fried chicken with rice, seafood stir fry flat noodles, and the salted squid. Everything was amazing until my waiter brought out Malaysian kimchi. WHAT???? Ohmygosh, it was paradise! Exactly the right kind of pickled!!! read more
This was our first time here. Great food, plenty of seats, and decent service. The food was served promptly and the prices for each dish are around $15-20. Everything tasted amazing. It has distinct flavors and seasonings are entirely different but delicious. We ordered Chicken Curry Laksa, curry chicken Sambhal Shrimp, & chili shrimp. Everything tasted fresh. Would like to try some curry's next time. read more

They finally arrived in Houston. So we were excited to try them out. Food was OK not as great as we thought. We do have other Malaysian restaurants in town and they are better. Staffs are friendly and since we were there on the weekends the restaurant is over crowded. Prices are quite reasonable. One small thing for a brand new restaurant and serving plates that were chipped, it's a bit unpleasant. Maybe the manager should check them out. read more
Service and ambiance are great! MUST get the roti canai-plain; it's so good! Laksa is amazing! Nasi lemak (beef) was good but not amazing; it comes with anchovies, and the flavors didn't mesh well. But everything else is amazing, and I LOVE coming back here read more
I always go to PapaRich whenever I am craving for Malaysian food. Service is always fast and friendly. Every dish is tasty and well executed. For appetizer, roti canai is a must ordered. Beef rendang and curry chicken are both good to have with the roti canai, but I always prefer the rendang better. For entree, Char Kway Teow, Salted squid, Hainan chicken, and the seafood curry laksa are my favorites. Also, skip the sambal squid if you are planning to order it, because it was probably the only dish that I didn't really like here Tips: Ask for chili padi when you are here. It is basically thai chili peppers mixed with soy sauce. Great to mix with char kway teow or used as a dipping sauce read more

the service is great. we sent back a dish and they obliged. we wanted real spicy food with no touch of sweet at all. the first dish that we got is not upto my spicy level. its sweet infact. sent it back for the noodles and this noodles is fine but not the best real malay spice. its ok like americanized ok. the same with the fried rice. ambience is good lot of parking. this is the first and last time for me. for people who want taste of malay but no spice at all they might like this place i wish them good luck read more
Came here again and got a few different items. Got the char kway teow, regular Hainanese chicken, and beef rendang. All 3 dishes were delicious and full of flavor. Service was good! I love coming to Papparich for the best Malaysian food. read more
Tried this place with my family months ago. It was very very good. Food was plentiful and delicious. Between the 6 of us, we practically sampled the entire menu. From the wings, to lamb stand beef skewers, to beef randang, chili shrimp, some type of okra and beef? Sauce, off course the roti canai either the crackcurry sauce, and one of my all time fav Malay dish..the sizzling tofu. This place, as with most restaurants in Bellaire is located on the edge of a pretty busy plaza. Parking is plentiful. If you can't get a spot on ground, there's a 2 or 3 story garage just adjacent. Free. Final grade: B+ would bounce between this and Banana leaf While delicious food, not entirely a wow! Banana leaf serves up similar quality and taste for slightly cheaper. The difference is this place has a better ambiance. read more

We were in the mood to try some new places, and PappaRich happened to be one of the new establishments in the Bellaire Food Street and has been garnering raving reviews, so we ended up giving it a try. After sampling quite a few different items from the menu, I am soooo NOT convinced of the authenticity of the raving reviews. Yelpers, y'all led me down again! :( I'd always compare a new establishment with a current establishment as a test of choice - if they are good enough to compete with an old establishment. In this case, Banana Leaf has always been the famous go-to spot for Malaysian cuisine in Houston Chinatown, so I measured PappaRich against that. The Mixed Satay was alright (3.5/5). I definitely liked the beef more than the chicken. The sauce was sweet and good. Roti Canai with Beef Rendang was subpar (2/5). I did not like any of the sauces that much, and the Beef Rendang did not make it any more exciting. That's pretty sad since I always love Roti Canai! Hainan Chicken was so-so (3/5). The chicken was moist and soft, but it lacked substantive flavor. Sizzling Tofu was good (4/5), but definitely does not compare with the infamous one from Banana Leaf! Nasi Lemak with Curry Chicken and Shrimp was alright (3.5/5). The waitress recommended this Nasi Lemak option. If I could choose again, I'd recommend NOT getting the shrimp - they were quite overcooked. The chicken was a bit dry too though, but the coconut rice and the paste combination went well together. Tl;dr: A new addition to Bellaire Food Street complex. However, like most establishments in this new shopping center, they lack MUCH in quality when compared to existing establishments in Houston's Chinatown. read more
I have done take out MANY times and it always hits the spot. It's always super packed on the weekends so I end up not dining in. I finally got the opportunity to dine in during a weekday. My go-to items are usually the Nasi Lemak section because it comes with sides and the half portion Hainanese Chicken. I highly recommend the Curry Chicken (R2) and Beef Rendang (R5) if you're going to try a Nasi Lemak dish. read more

Great food and great service. Pro tip: the waiter was kind enough to show us that if you order the satay, make sure you are grabbing some onion and cucumber with the meat and SLATHER THE PEANUT SAUCE. The tasting experience is exponentially different! They start off the meal with some free pickled veg. It may seem intimidating at first sight, but the taste was light and refreshing. It's a great palate cleanser. The pad Thai was good, not too different from other places The beef rendang was GREAT! It comes with rice, which you definitely need with it. Also kudos to the sweet waiter. When I asked to take the leftover of the beef rendang, he brought me some fresh rice to take home. Definitely would recommend to anyone that likes Malaysian food and those that have never tried it! read more
I am so glad my friend chose this place for dinner. It's located inside the Bellaire Food Street plaza, so parking can be terrible during prime time. I didn't have any trouble for a Tuesday night, but weekends I'd tend to avoid. I haven't really eaten much Malaysian food before, so I don't have much comparison, however I thought the food was great! The restaurant was spacious and clean, and more casual atmosphere. We ordered 4 items to share because we wanted to try multiple items: Roti Cani with Beef Rendang: this was really good. Beef was tender and flavorful. A bit on the greasy side. Hainanese chicken: this was soaked in sauce and was decent. Curry Laksa with chicken: I would say this was my favorite. The curry soup was so delish and had a spicy kick to it. Watercress: great vegetable side dish We also had a portion of the coconut rice, chicken rice, and steamed rice. I am a huge rice person and I loved them all! Service was fast and friendly. I'll definitely be back! read more
Really good and pretty authentic from what I can tell. The beef rendang was flavored well and although the portion seemed small, it ended up being pretty filling. The Hainanese chicken (poached) really impressed me - it was a generous portion considering the price and the chicken was super juicy. The rice was also flavorful. The only thing I wasn't crazy about were the sauces - the sweet soy sauce was overly sweet with a strong brown sugar taste (kind of tasted like the brown sugar syrup in boba) and I wished the ginger garlic sauce had a stronger ginger flavor. The teh tarik was so good, perfect sweetness and tea aroma. read more

I wanted to try Malaysian food just to branch out and it was so delicious! Surpassed my expectations!! I ordered the Char Kway Teow Beef pictured below and it was so yummy! Like a light version of Chinese food and Indian food had a baby. I will definitely be back. I also ordered to go Beef Rendong and Chicken and beef skewers. I'll update with a review on those. read more

I'll separate my review into two sections: food/dining experience and a funny story. FOOD/DINING EXPERIENCE The big disclaimer is that this was only my second time eating Malaysian food. I had lunch at PappaRich with my mom and here's what we got: - Roti with Curry Chicken: roti was nice and warm and the curry chicken dipping sauce was delicious. It also came with a sweet spicy sambal sauce as well as a lentil sauce. We honestly probably did not need to order this as our entrees were very filling. - Nasi Lemak with Beef Rendang: Beef Rendang is my favorite Malaysian dish and PappaRich totally delivered. I also enjoyed the coconut milk rice and the fact that it was shaped like a pyramid on my plate haha. - Hainanese Chicken Rice Set: iono my mom ordered this. Came with three sauces, a mound of bean sprouts, chicken flavored rice, and a soup. We also got this kimchi thing as a free appetizer which I enjoyed (and not just because it was free). With regards to the pandemic, I also appreciated how well spaced the tables were. FUNNY STORY So I first saw a PappaRich in Taipei and it became an inside joke in my friend group because the Chinese name roughly translates to "gold daddy." So say one of my friends ordered a large bubble tea instead of a regular or whatever, we'd be like "wow look at this gold daddy over here LOL." I didn't even know what type of restaurant PappaRich was, yet I referenced it all the time. Fast forward two years and I'm craving beef rendang. I was shocked to learn PappaRich was a Malaysian restaurant and that they had a location in Houston (one of only 3 locations in the US as far as I can tell). After finally eating here, I can say that PappaRich's food is certainly no joke. read more
Great authentic Malaysian cuisine in Houston's Chinatown area. The service is very attentive and food comes out quick. We ordered the chicken Roti canai, beef redadong and chicken laksa. The beef redadong was the star of the show and comes with a small side of steamed white rice. It's a savory dry beef curry with tender beef cubes. The chicken roti canai is a spicy dish reminiscent of Indian food. I didn't care for chicken laksa much because it was a little bland and the fish balls just don't do much for it. Definitely check out this flavor spot. read more

PappaRich was my first ever Malaysian food, and I feel like they set the bar very high! Thanks to the Yelp community I was able to look at pictures of the various dishes before meeting some friends here for dinner and I knew I had my work cut out for me when it came to making a decision on what to order. Ultimately, I decided to start with the plain Roti (you have to start with some version of their Roti in my opinion!) plus the chicken laksa. Others at the table were nice enough to let me sample a little of their orders: the beef rendang and sizzling tofu (both excellent). The roti was so delightfully fluffy yet flaky (how) and the three accompanying dipping sauces were full of flavor and included mild and spicy options. The laksa was so good and a bit spicier than I expected, in a good way! I don't usually order spicy things but I couldn't resist the idea of the curry spice mixed with the coconut milk base plus all the soup toppings/fillers. I am very glad I ordered this and I still have enough for a second meal today! Service was crazy fast - its as if they knew what we wanted to order before we did. The staff was very friendly and attentive, filling up my water glass many times as I chugged it to cope with the laksa spice! The space is very clean, simply decorated, and inviting. Since this is located within the popular Bellaire Food Street area, parking directly in front of the restaurant is not worth fighting for - just go to the adjacent 3-story parking garage and save yourself some frustration. read more
