It's been a long time since I've had Hainanese chicken, and PappaRich does it better than the places I've had in the past. It's a small little restaurant that can get packed during peak hours. They have your usual fare of Malaysian cuisine, but everyone I see will include the classic Hainanese chicken and rice in their order. Since the chicken is steamed without any overpowering spices, the texture is important to get right. You want tender chicken, but not overly so to the point of mushy. This type of chicken needs to have the right amount of "bite", and I think they hit the nail on the head. That paired with the flavorful sauce and rice makes a great combination. I also tried their beef rendang, and while it was tasty, the portion of beef seemed very small to me. However, I came for the chicken, and it did not disappoint.
PappaRich is my favorite Malaysian restaurant in the Houston area. I've been going to them since they first opened, and they have always been consistent and never failed to impress. The restaurant is small and clean. The servers are always nice, and the foods are always delicious. I recently stopped by around 5pm on a Saturday for an early dinner for two. It wasn't busy yet when I first arrived, but more and more customers started coming in as it got closer to dinner hours. I always have to order my two favorites: Steamed Hainese Chicken Rice set and the Roti Canai with Beef Rendan. The steamed Hainese chicken here are some of the best in Houston area. It's always super tender and flavorful. I absolutely love the roti canai here. It's always light, fluffy, and just right, and I don't think anywhere else makes them as good as PappaRich.
Love this place! Very Authentic and food out at an appropriate time. Price is very fair and I would definitely bring my family here. Staff was very nice and soft spoken . Both the noodle and rice dish tasted great. Must get is their skewer appetizer and Roti!! Restaurant is spacious and looks clean
First time trying Pappa Rich had the Curry Chicken Laksa..Broth was savory had great seasoning! The Beansprouts added great texture, noodles were cooked perfectly Al dente bouncy and chewy. I noticed same Malaysian owners at this location since they recently shut down other location across the street. With my meal I ordered Togo for a friend-- I did the Hainam chicken and the Chicken Roti canai
PappaRich is a popular Malaysian restaurant that originated in Malaysia, and has grown to over 100 locations worldwide. It's one of the only 2 US locations, with the other being in New York. You can visit them on Bellaire Food Street. It's a clean restaurant. We walked in and were immediately greeted and sat by a nice woman. We came because we were craving one thing only: Hainanese Chicken. They also have the fried option as well, but we decided on steamed. We got the half chicken and it was enough to feed 2 people. The chicken was so tender. The chicken rice was cooked perfectly, so moist and flavorful. The chicken, rice, some scallion ginger, a bit of sriracha: the perfect bite! We also had the mixed skewers (beef and chicken). The dipping sauce was good. I prefer the chicken over the beef skewers. The beef skewers were a bit tough. I wasn't the biggest fan of the seasoning they used. However, if I were to get these again, I would just opt for the chicken skewers only. If you never had Malaysian food, I recommend giving this place try. I will definitely be back to order the fried hainanese chicken.
We were in the area and thought to give PappaRich a try. It has been a couple years since we went there. Not busy as it was relatively late. We ordered the sizzling tofu with seafood and a seafood char kway teow (flat noodle). They were both ok. Thought there should have been more tofu (10 pieces total). Other places offer a bit more tofu. The seafood char kway teow as decent. They do have the sliced chili with vinegar that compliments the noodle dish and give it a kick. Staff were friendly and the restaurant well decorated and reminded me of Kuala Lumpur.
A solid 3.5 stars for the food but I'll round it up to a 4 because our server Angie was nice and accommodating. We got there at 12 noon and shockingly it wasn't busy at all. The food also came out a little too fast, which I'm not complaining about but I think my beef rendang wasn't a fresh batch. I understand that this dish takes a long time to make because they slow cook their beef but I think it was out for a while. We started off with their curry chicken roti. The roti was soft & it was fresh. The sauces that were on the side were not good. I prefer to just dip it in the beef rendang. The chicken itself was forgettable & dry. I could've just ordered a plain roti. For our mains we got the beef rendang & salted egg prawns. The sauce on the rendang was delicious but the beef itself wasn't that tendered and melt in your mouth. & it was kind of dry too. They either cooked it too long or the batch wasn't fresh. The prawns were lightly fried and the batter was seasoned to perfection. The salty egg sauce added extra flavor to the dish. Overall, it was a good experience. Food was solid, service was great and the place was clean & well put together. Will I come back? Yes.
My friend and I were craving roti and we were nearby, so we decided to stop by. We came around 6:30 PM and service was so quick. There were only 1-2 servers but they were so attentive and helpful. The food came out relatively quickly and was so good! This was my third time here and I have ordered the roti every time. The roti was made perfectly with a combination of crispness and softness. I could order just 3 portions of just the roti 10/10. As for the noodles, I wish there were more protein in it but I couldn't complain because the sauce and the texture of the noodles were so good. They were chewy and thick, holding onto the sauce well. They had a rich soy- sauced flavor 8.5/10!
This place is legit! Hainan chicken rice - The chicken was very tender, perfectly done. The rice however lacks flavor. Sauce was good too! Laksa - Beware that it may be too spicy for some. I loved it. The ingredients were great and the soup flavor was intense and rich. It already have fish ball so unless you want prawns, get the extra otherwise, chicken is a little cheaper. Good noodles. Taste like the authentic one. Chow kwai teo - The flavor was very good. It's not curry based unlike some Chinese restaurant just add cut powder. This one was authentic. Luck Texan, this place is legit.
If you're looking for a Malaysian restaurant, this is a good place to try. The food is very good especially ghe sizzling tofu, water spinach in sambal sauce, fried calamari in salted egg abd even the rotis. The place is not that big but adequate, the server are very friendly and service is fast.
We were in Bellaire, this place hit the spot! I really wanted hainanese chicken and they have a little set that was PERFECT. If you want 1/2 chicken, there is a larger dish that you can order. We paired this with a mushroom and veggie stirfry. What I love about this place is that they don't do added MSG and if you want, you can ask for less sauce or less salt and the food was just the right level for me. The hainanese chicken set comes with 3 dipping sauces and a bowl of the most delicious flavored rice! I really enjoyed the ginger oil sauce on the rice... YUM. We didn't have to wait long after we sat down to order and after we ordered the food came out pretty fast. Wonderful service. You know the food is on point when you have the perfect silence. The hubs noticed we weren't talking at all because we were so engrossed in the food, LOL!
My cousin's uncle (on her dad's side) recommended we go here since I've never been before and they said this was their favorite spot for malaysian food. My cousin who had been to Singapore said she liked this place also because their food reminded her a little of the food she had in Singapore. We came for a Sunday lunch and it was somewhat busy, they had several tables open but the groups that came in were of at least 4 people. There was probably 1-2 people serving but I only saw 1 person taking orders and she was going to each table that just got saw to take everyone's orders on her Ipad. We had asked for water and that took a while to get brought out to us but eventually we got cups of water and bowls/ utensils then the food started coming out. We had also asked for small sharing bowls 3 times to 2 different people that never got brought out because we wanted to share the Laksa but eventually someone brought out some bowls when they saw we were trying to share the Laksa. I'd come back here but maybe try to go on a non-busy hours of operation so we can potentially get better service.
Reviews are largely positive. People highlight the authentic Malaysian flavors, enjoy the friendly and attentive staff, and note the clean and modern ambiance.

Fantastic addition to Bellaire Food Street! This was my first time having Malaysian food, and I really liked it. Chicken curry laksa: Incredible. The broth was an explosion of flavor, making the noodles a treat to eat. The curry also comes with fried tofu, fish cakes, and egg plant - overall a delightful dish. Hainanese Chicken - The star of the show. The chicken is so tender and flavorful - I almost considered not dipping it in the sauces, it was already so good on its own. The bean sprouts are also yummy and cooked in some sort of sauce. I also love that this chicken came with rice soaked in chicken broth - the best rice I've ever had. Also, the interior of this restaurant is beautiful - everything is nature-green and it feels peaceful. read more
Another solid Malaysian food spot in Chinatown! We ordered the hainanese chicken, curry chicken nasi lemak, and beef rendang roti. All the flavors were great but the food definitely tasted pre-prepared and not fresh. The beef was tough, chicken wasn't as good as banana leaf in my opinion. My friends rave about this place so maybe I went on an off day, but I do love the flavors of the food - I just wish it was more fresh! Parking is ok in the Chinatown food street lot. read more
Came for lunch around 11 am. It was mostly empty, and we were immediately seated. We got the roti canai - plain (C5) for $5.50, char kway teow beef (N17) $12-13, and hainanese chicken rice set (R1) for $10-11. They gave us a complimentary side of what I think is pickled vegetables? It reminded me of kimchi with a different seasoning/sauce. Our food came out quickly in 5-10 minutes. We really enjoyed all the dishes, but my personal favorites were the roti canai and hainanese chicken, which I think were the best value and highest quality. We also had enough to take home for another meal! Next time, I'd like to try the nasi lemak - beef rendang. read more

Quick and kind service. Delicious food. We also had lamb curry and it had great flavor, but it could have been spicy. read more
Since their opening at the start of the year, I've swung by to pick up takeout on 3 occasions with friends and family. Here are my thoughts on what I've tried: Hainan Chicken Rice Set (4.5/5) - With all the fixings and sauces, it's the closest we're gonna get to the traditional chicken rice plate. The chicken is smooth and juicy, paired with a perfect foil of crunchy marinated bean sprouts. The broth tastes natural with a hint of herbs - if it's from concentrate I can't tell myself. The chicken rice is delicious but leans on the drier side, so it's likely you'll find yourself mixing everything together to get your ideal ratio of meat, carbs, veg, and sauce in each bite. Fried Chicken with Chicken Rice (3/5) - The first time I tried to order this, I received the beef nasi goreng in its place as the two menu items share the same order number. Since they make you order with numbers, make sure to specify which one! But maybe they themselves thought the nasi goreng was a better choice, as this fried chicken turned out quite dry and weirdly textured after arriving at home. This one might be a better dine-in choice, but when the hainan chicken is such good quality, it'll be hard for me to pick this in lieu of that. It's accompanied by the same broth, rice, and sauces. Nasi Lemak w/ Curry Chicken (5/5) - I may be biased as nasi lemak is perhaps my favorite Malaysian dish, but it is definitely expertly executed at this restaurant! The dreamy coconut rice is your canvas on which you'll savor the spicy, sweet, salty, and sour contrasts of each component of the dish. The shrimp are cooked well and the chicken curry is well seasoned. It's a little difficult to share, but you won't want to. :) Curry Laksa w/ Chicken (4.5/5) - If you're a fan of warm, fiery noodle soup, this is for you. I've never had eggplant in a laksa before, but it's quite decent, as are all the other buoyant goodies swimming in your bowl. Just be warned that the heat will continue to build, so ready a cold cup of teh to put out the flames in case of emergency! Char Kway Teow Seafood (5/5) - Their CKT captures the kitchen's mastery at infusing fried dishes with "wok hei", that delicious smoky undertow that comes from high-heat wok stir-fry. The seafood is good too, not just an afterthought - if I were to bring a vegetarian friend, I'd recommend the veg version of this dish. Wat Tan Hor w/ Chicken & Shrimp (4/5) - This funky dish of noodles slathered in a savory gravy is halfway between noodle soup and pan-fried noodles, which means it's the best of both worlds. The to-go version was a little gummy as the noodles clung to each other, but I think it would be a really great dish for dine-in. In our city's multicultural mosaic of good eats, Malaysian & Singaporean-style food have unfortunately been underrepresented despite our obvious passion for other bold Southeast Asian flavors like Vietnamese & Thai. I am confident that PappaRich will be the establishment to change that trend. When I'm finally back to dining in-person, I'll be sure to try the cendol and roti canai! read more

The experience at PappaRich is truly amazing!! The atmosphere and music were awesome! The food was great. The service was fast and great. I do suggest PappaRich for some awesome Malaysian food. read more
I am lucky enough to have a friend who makes the most delicious Malaysian food and this place is a hit! Came in after a long day out and enjoyed almost everything we ordered! I definitely recommend the Beef Rendang, satay skewers, nasi lemak, chicken wings, and laksa. The filling in the bao could have used more salt in my opinion. We were stuffed by the time we left. Service was fast and food was delicious. Looking forward to going back whenever we're back in town. read more
I had a great experience coming into PappaRich for dinner on a Monday evening. It was busy and they did their part in spacing out the diners we only had to wait about 10 minutes or less to be seated. We ordered: Curry fish balls (4/5) Beef Roti (5/5) Hainanese chicken (5/5) Fried chicken nasi lemak (5/5) Everything was really good and hit the spot of home cooked comfort food. The food came out in a good time we didn't have to wait too long. The owner came out and asked how everything was which was really nice because we got to tell him how much we enjoyed it. We told him we will definitely be back and it's a plus they are next door to tiger sugar boba! I can't wait to try the curry laksa. read more

I'm upset it's taken me so long to get around to trying PappaRich. I usually don't eat Malaysian food unless I go to Phat Eatery, but this is definitely one of my go-to places now. I ordered the fried Hainanese chicken rice set and it was so good. The skin was extra crispy and each piece was juicy. The chicken is already covered in a lightly sweet soy mixture, but it also comes with a thicker sweet soy sauce (?), minced ginger sauce, and a hot sauce of some sort. The set also comes with rice and a soup to wash everything down. My fiancée enjoyed her plate of nasi lemak w/ beef rendang. The best part is that I got to eat the crispy sardines that came with her plate! Lastly, we also got the pappacham drink to compliment our meal. The drink is a mixture of coffee, tea, and condensed milk. The taste is similar to grass jelly. It was not very sweet at all which is perfect for me. We thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of our meals and will definitely be coming back very soon! read more

Fantastic addition to Houston Chinatown. Best Hainanese Chicken Rice we've had outside of Singapore so far. Chicken flavor and texture are right on. The rice is very good as well. Not as well flavored and rich as the hawker centers, but still hard to beat and definitely scratches the itch. Got the beef rendang as well, in smaller roti appetizer portion, and the flavor and fork cut texture of the beef was also right on point. Sad note is no Bah Ku Teh as they don't serve pork. read more

First off, the service was great. The waiters were very helpful and extremely nice. I have no qualms there. Second, the food was good. The Hainanese chicken was slightly disappointing. It was on the bland side. I couldn't taste any ginger nor any seasoning for that matter but that is where my negative thoughts end. The Kopi was wonderful and very smooth and not super sweet. It was a nice a nice change from Vietnamese coffee that I'm used to having around here. The rice and soup that accompanied the chicken were very good and very flavorful as well as the dipping sauces. The star of my meal was the fried chicken for my Nasi Lamak. They know what they're doing. It was fall off the bone tender and had the most wonderful crackly crust. The coconut rice was so yummy and I loved eating it with the tiny fish and peanuts. The sambal was on the fishy side but that's because there were fish in it (duh). I look forward to coming back and trying the Nasi Goreng, Beef Rendang, and the Roti Canai. read more

I really liked this place and it was super clean! I would definitely come back. The service was super quick, everyone was masked up, and we were checked on frequently. My boyfriend got the Hainan Chicken and he liked it. I tasted the chicken and it was pretty good, but could have used a little more flavor. I had the Seafood Curry Laksa and it was pretty good. Kinda spicy the more you eat for those who may be sensitive to spice. We also got the beef and chicken satay which my favorite of the meal. The peanut sauce was really good. read more
Sorry, I did a to-go order so there are no aesthetically pleasing photos to go along with my review, but trust me when I say: food here is really delicious! I ordered the SM1 (hainan chicken) and the SM 3 (slow cooked beef rendang. Both exceeded my expectations. I'm always a bit effy about trying Malaysian food in Houston because there's this one particular restaurant in btown that's absolutely phenomenal. However, Papparich just made it in my list. Yum! Only thing is they don't give complimentary side veggie dishes like other Malaysian restaurants, but many this is bc it's only their soft opening... I'll come back again! read more

If you haven't tried Malaysian food before, PappaRich is the place to go! I would describe the flavor profile as a mix of South asian and East asian flavors. I tried the tofu ramen which was absolutely delicious. It had a strong curry flavor and was super filling and good portion sizes. I also tried the Roti canai that was delicious. the roti was super flakey and buttery and it came with a curry flavored dipping sauce that was delicious. Can't wait to come back here and try some of the other menu items! Beware parking is a challenge! there's a small parking garage but all the spots were taken, and there was very little parking in the complex. read more
Food was ok but I didn't think it was anything amazing. Curry chicken - 4/5 Beef rendeng - 3/5 Char kway teow - 3/5 My favorite was the chicken curry because the meat was super tender. I got the beef rendeng and the meat was kind of like mushed and I didn't like it. There was also really no sauce to even dip anything. Char kway teow and drinks were mediocre. read more

Nice spacious layout. I felt the design was a tad plain, however we are here for the food. Beef Rendang - love the plating and was very appealing. Beef was tender altho I read one Yelper felt it was not. I felt is a bit dry and still feel you get better rendang in Asia.. Fried Kuay Teow - it does has the wok smell and taste. Would love if they have added more variety of ingredients like Chinese sausage and some yellow egg noodles. I prefer mine with more dark sauce like those from Asia. Nasi Lemak - everything was good. A bit stingy on the chilli. Ice Kacang - $6 for shaved ice with sugar syrubs and some toppings, I think is overpriced. Portions for FKT and rendang were very decent size. Price was good and tbe server was excellent. We have two Malaysian restaurants in sugar land, so I doubt I make a special trip to Chinatown just for the Malaysian cuisine. The food is good, but not good enough to make the trip just for the food. read more

Servers are all very attentive and all the food was good. The beef rendang is full of flavor. So are the coconut rice and the chicken rice. Laksa is a bit strong for me but it might be just my preference. I don't find them to be spicy but your mileage may vary. The milk tea and the es cendol dessert are delicious too. We've tried the majority of Singapore/Malaysian/Indonesian places in Houston and this is better than most of them. I hope the spices they are using can stay same because that's what lacking with most of the other places. read more
This place has become one of my favorite Malaysian spots in Houston! I've tried the chicken curry laksa, fried Hainanese chicken, and nasi lemak with beef rendang. The fried Hainanese chicken is my personal favorite due to how much flavor and texture the chicken has even without the sauces on the side. I recommend the rice dishes here over the noodles, although their roti canai is amazing as well. The coconut rice that they serve is super addicting and flavorful. The service here is also great. I will definitely be back to try more of their dishes! read more

It was decent food but definitely not more than three stars. I got the roti chicken curry appetizer which was very small with very sauce. It was tasty but not worth what you pay for it. For my meal, I ordered the nasi lemak beef rendang. The beef rendang was good but once again small for what you pay. I did not realize that this is a huge chain restaurant. I am not sure how this place has 4.5 stars. I guess it's people that work here. I will find somewhere else next time! read more
first time having @papparich.usa in Bellaire for Easter Sunday + did not disappoint their machines were down so we had to pay via Zelle. the parking was tricky but the garage setup next door helps with overflow from limited store front spots. ordered: general tso chicken, green beans + minced chicken, shrimp + chicken lo mein, slow cooked beef rendang, & beef char kway teow. read more
So filling. So flavorful. So good. I'm not super familiar with Malaysian food, but that roti canai is good enough to have dreams about (fried flatbread dipped in sauce or curry) . Even if it's just the sauce and not with the curried chicken, it tastes absolutely amazing. The airy yet substantial chewiness of the flatbread combined with the flavorful, often spicy richness of the sauce.... Fantastic. I was almost fighting with my companion for the last few bites at one point. How can something so simple be so delicious? I ordered the rice dish that's pictured here. It was good, but I think I would have preferred eating the curry laksa since that seemed more "special" to me, thus more worth the trouble of figuring out the parking situation for this location: it's in a small, yet bustling strip with an entire parking garage dedicated to it. But I don't think you could go wrong with most, if not all of the things in the menu. The takeout situation is smooth. You just have to call your order in for now; they don't have an online ordering system yet. I think the only gripe my companion and I had was that the cendol (dessert drink) was too sweet. Otherwise, everything we ordered was solid! read more
This was was solid. We only got satay (chicken and beef), roti with beef rendeng, and sizzling tofu and they were all pretty good. The roti is perfectly crisp though I wasn't too enamored with the dipping sauces that it came with (one darker sauce that was too sweet, there was another pea based sauce). The sizzling tofu was really good though but I was surprised by the small portion size. The ambience could use some help but it was perfectly clean inside. read more
Tried @papparich.usa on a friends recommendation and it was great!! She recommended the roti curry and the beef rendang and both were great! Super flavorful and the roti was fluffy and crispy! We also got the nasi lamak and the dessert roti with banana! Both were great and delicious! The roti with banana tasted like a crepe and ice cream on top . The nasi lamak was a rice dish that came with veggies, fried silver fish and a spicy sauce and it all blends together into a great flavor! Don't forget leave a like and follow for more food! read more

This place is delicious! I came on a weekday evening with a craving for roti canai, and this place did not disappoint. I recommend getting the beef rendang, super flavorful, and the beef is very tender. I also tried the sizzling tofu and the fried hainese chicken. Sizzling tofu is amazing! It's super silky, custard tofu that comes on a hot plate with mushrooms, carrots, peas, and underneath the tofu is some egg. The sauce that it came was super delicious with rice, I almost wanted to get another order of the tofu. Now, the fried hainese chicken, I was not a fan. It was super dry, and tough. I nearly choked on it. I plan on ordering it steamed next time. Hopefully it will be moist. I would also pass on the mi goreng as wel. It was cooked with what appears to be spaghetti noodles? In a tomato based ketchup sauce. A bit too sweet for my liking. read more

I love this wonderful authentic Malaysian restaurant! All the flavors here are so authentic with wide variety. We started out the dinner with their highly recommended Roti Canai, which is an appetizer of fluffy Indian style naan with 3 wonderful sauces lentil sauce, sweet spicy sambal, and a curry style sauce. This is one of my favorite dishes because the sauces were amazing. I couldn't get enough of the fluffy naan. I love the sweet and spicy sambal, but all three sauces really elevated the dish. Another appetizer we got was the mixed beef and chicken satay skewers. These are great as well. The meat skewers were flavorful and tender. For the main dishes, we ordered a wide spread of dishes. One of the most memorable dishes is their salted egg squid. The salted egg lightly coated the fried squid to really give a balanced flavor. Their Hainanese chicken was also amazing. It's juicy and tender. The sauce on the side was amazing. The plate came with the Hainanese rice which was so good. The other two dishes were great too, Assam Fish and slow-cooked beef rendang. I loved how all the dishes had very distinctive flavors and really showcased the depth of Malaysian cuisine. I highly recommend this place if you are craving authentic Malaysian food! read more
