Smoky Chicken That Needs No Sauce! We popped into Papi's Peruvian Chicken on a Sunday, hoping to beat the church crowd, but it turns out, the real blessing was waiting inside. As soon as we pulled into the parking lot, my buddy leaned over and said, "Man, someone's smoking something and it smells delicious." When we stepped inside, his grin got even bigger as he turned to me and said, "It's this place, great choice!" We both went for the smoked dark quarter with street corn salad. My buddy chose green beans, and I went with the Inca pork beans. I asked the woman at the counter to recommend a sauce, and she took the time to explain each one, patiently answering all my basic questions. It turns out, the chicken didn't need any sauce at all. It was smoky, moist, and packed with flavor--crispy on the outside with a deep, wood-fired taste that lingered with every bite. The Inca pork beans were hearty and full of flavor, a solid sidekick to the main event. The street corn salad, while fresh, could have used a bit more kick--maybe a sprinkle of cheese or a dash of lime to brighten it up. The interior's industrial strip mall vibe is functional but could benefit from a few authentic touches--like Peruvian art or music--to match the rich flavors coming out of the kitchen. If you're craving smoky, fall-off-the-bone chicken, Papi's Peruvian Chicken is worth the trip. I'll definitely be back to try more! read more

This place is so incredibly good- wow. If I lived in Leland I'd be a regular here. They have really good Peruvian food that is quick serve. We tried the chicken platters empanadas and they were all exceptional. My son ordered the tres leches cake and it was probably on the best I've had. I am seriously contemplating dealing with the bridge traffic to get their food again. read more

Papis is a great fast casual Peruvian restaurant with some flavor packed Peruvian chicken. If you have not had Peruvian chicken before it is a marinaded chicken that is then cooked on a rotisserie over charcoal. The chicken comes out tender, juicy, and with a little smoky flavor that takes it over the top. They have quite a few options for sides, and I am a sucker for their tostones. They also have a great selection of sauces you can try to spice things up. Definitely worth giving them a try! read more

Just tried Papis chicken..although the food was pretty good, the chicken is a Smokey flavor, the side of rice was very bland, the Mac and cheese was just ok, the sweet plantains were good. We also got the Lomo Saltado which was great. We wanted the nachos which is the special on mondays but they were sold out. The issue was the woman at the register wasn't very nice, and was annoyed when we asked for extra forks and a plate, and our plantains took some time and when we asked her about them that also annoyed her. Overall, the food was good but the lack of organization and unfriendliness wasn't very inviting and I think there are other places with food just as good and nicer people. read more

I've visited Papis Chicken several times and I have always been pleased with each dish! I got the half chicken, fried rice, and black beans. All was good, but that chicken is 5 worthy! If you want some of the BEST chicken in the Leland/Wilmington then you got to visit Papis! Also the atmosphere is awesome to dine in and there is plenty of parking! This place is fantastic in their choice of sides. We each got a 1/4 chicken and two sides. I recommend the green beans as they are still slightly crunchy and not over cooked like most places. Housed in a large storefront, the setup will be familiar with anyone who has been to Papi's sister restaurant, El Chingon, just a short drive away. It's basically cafeteria style: first you get in line (large signage shows the way) and then place your order, get your food and pay. Lively music plays and the ambiance is warm and inviting. Booths are large and comfortable and there are large communal tables as well. The food and drinks are quite tasty. I had the 1/4 dark chicken, along with rice and black beans, with a small Horchata to drink. Delicious! Husband had the 1/2 chicken with tostones and fries. We both had the green sauce, which is my preferred Peruvian sauce. The spice level is fairly tame, yet full of flavor. My parents went a little off the traditional path for their meals. Mom got the chicken salad in avocado, which I tried, and can absolutely vouch for - it's excellently seasoned. Dad went with the daily special, which on Wednesday is the BBQ chicken sandwich. Ordered online this evening and later got a call saying they were out of chicken and it would be 30-45 mins. My friend was picking it foot because I have Covid. She goes and kills time comes back 45 mins later and it's not ready yet. They had to still cut the chicken. She's watching them pack the order and they drop the fries on the counter and just pick them up and put them in the box. The food was mediocre and all they offered for the trouble was a drink. So this is actually my second bad experience with this place. Decided to order curb side , sat in car 7 minutes past THEIR pick up time. Finally I called from parking lot " oh we don't do curb side." Huh!? Why you ask me what kind of car I have?? I had to go in , when I get in there owner says " oh she's new she didn't know" WTF??? Someone should have run that food as soon as they knew I was waiting. The first time I was there with my son. We waited 40 minutes for our order that happened to be the SPECIAL of the day ! This was the first time eating at Papi's Chicken and I'm glad I discoverered this place. I had a quarter chicken white meat with 2 sides (black beans and white rice), along with the green cilantro sauce. The meat was a just a little on the dry side and the skin wasn't crispy, but the flavors were wonderful. I enjoyed the green sauce - I make mine spicier. This is a casual place where you order at the counter. Service was friendly. Prices reasonable. I didn't notice the daily specials that were listed outside, but did see it on the napkin holder. They should have it posted with all the other food items on the menu, but at least I now know where to look for it. Leland doesn't have many restaurants so I'm glad I found this place. Papi's Chicken is a fast casual restaurant, where you place your order at the counter. You can see the chickens cooking on a rotisserie pit. Most of the sides are pre-prepared and sit in hotel pans at the counter. Ordered the entree 1/4 dark chicken with sides of tostones and chaufa. I also tried the cheesy yuca bites, plantains, roasted potatoes, and Caesar salad. I wanted to try the dulche de leche empanadas and cilantro lime dressing, but they were out. This was on a Friday night at 6:45pm. It was not that busy during that time. By the way, they do not make dulche de leche from scratch. The dark chicken meat was tender but the skin was not crispy. The chicken flavor was good. The tostones were good, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Aroma of Peru's tostones were crispier, though. Chaufa was okay, just basic fried rice with chicken. The plantains were perfect-soft with some crispy edges. The roasted potatoes were okay-soft and flavored with dried rosemary. The cheesy yuca bites were small-sized nuggets, lightly crispy on the outside. Inside was moist mashed yuca with melted cheese in the middle. The cheese was yellow-colored and tasted like fake, ultra processed cheese. Wouldn't order this again. The Caesar salad was terrible. It was soaked with Caesar salad dressing and the lettuce was old, wilted. My dinner companion had the side of Inka Pork Beans, which he liked, but he wished it was hotter in temperature. Now for the sauces. They have three sauces and they are all similar to Aromas of Peru. The sauces are at a self-serve station. Of course, my favorite was the spicy one. It really wasn't that spicy (unless you're really sensitive). I prefer Aroma's of Peru's spicy sauce, it has a better flavor and is more garlicky. The green herb sauce and yellow sauce were both good. The yellow sauce's mustard flavor is not as strong as Aromas of Peru's. They have a small refrigerated display case with to-go salads, tres leche cake, cheesecake, and drinks. Interesting, noticed the tres leche cake to-go was $0.50 cheaper than it says on the menu at the counter where you order. They offer 10% off for military, police officers, first responders, and firefighters. They also have a special for buy one get one 1/2 off of any chicken combo with purchase of two drinks from Monday to Thursday, 6 p.m. to closing. read more

We usually trek through Leland when needed our EV charged. We eagerly wanted to try the food and I completely forgot to take pictures. Highly recommend this restaurant if you'reinto Peruvian chicken. The seasoning was just enough, not too overpowering. Chicken was juicy and not dry. The sides were to die for. We loved Mac n cheese, Fried rice, and street corn salad. I had the 1/4 white chicken with the Brussels sprouts and the pork pinto beans. So freaking good! I think I may eat here again tomorrow. If you like spicy be sure to try the roasted garlic habanero I love that sauce. I want to try so many of their sides but I love the ones I ordered so I'm torn. I love this place! It's so fast and convenient for me I've started coming here at least once a week. They have all sorts of different Peruvian foods to try. The street corn is a must try!! They also have other things if you have some pickey eaters with you. The Mac and cheese is delicious but I haven't been brave enough to get it as my bowl base yet. They also have amazing chicken salad that you can get as a sandwich or as a side. You can really tell they roast their chicken fresh everyday. I live in the Myrtle Beach area, and I have yet to experience what I've had here at Papis chicken. First let's start with, the protocols they have in place to keep their customers, employees safe during COVID-19. Touché! Moving on, the flavors, customer service, I'll talk to you to detail, and fresh food has made this place one of my top favorite places in the Carolinas. I live an hour and a half away, and I stumbled onto this gem. The food was so delicious, that I had to take for orders to go. The funny thing was, we weren't even looking for this place, and just happen to drive through the plaza where it's located, and noticed a sign that made it apparent that this was a great place to go. I'm really picky when it comes to dining in, but this establishment met all of my expectations. I spoke to the staff, they said they've only been open for a couple of years. I hope they stay open for as long as they possibly can during these difficult times, and continue to serve the community there absolutely delicious selection. Thank you for existing! While the chicken is very flavorful, the service lacks. My husband ordered the 1/4 rotisserie chicken that supposedly came with 2 sides. He ordered the fries and greens beans. The young lady behind the counter working the register said that she will bring out his order to our table when it was ready. The chicken and fries came but no green beans. After 20 minutes my husband went back to the counter and asked about his green beans. Something was said to the other ladies who were on break and she told him that she would bring it out when it was ready. 30 minutes passed, still no side and we were already finished with our meal. Mind you, the place was empty. They did not wait in anyone after us. Although we had already paid for our meals, the ladies that worked there did not say anything to us or offer another side to my husband. We cleaned up our tray and table and left. All I can say is they are very rude and lack customer service skills. We will not be returning to that establishment when we visit Leland again. read more

Loved our meal here! We both ordered a half chicken with two sides. Their special marinade on the rotisserie chicken is unique and delicious. There are a wide variety of tasty sides that are different than what you find in most "fast food" restaurants. I expected the "avocado slaw" to have visible pieces of avocado, and though it didnt, it was one of the best slaws I've ever had. The roasted plantains were like candy. Their macaroni and cheese is uniquely flavored and delicious. The decor and culturally themed music make the visit even more enjoyable.
