Tacos

The food was very authentic and delicious. The chips were especially tasty. The service from our server Karem was great. I highly recommend this as one of the best, authentic Mexican restaurants in town.

Absolutely, positively and conclusively (in my mind, anyway) THE BEST STREET TACOS in Wilmington. I know I have some friends who will think I'm crazy for saying this but I have now eaten here 3 times in the past week and cannot get enough of these tacos. FOOD: Taco Trio with frijoles (Asada, Pastor & Chorizo). I'll begin with stating a fact that these 3 tacos are only $2, each. That's it! That is it! For $2 each, this is a steal and I almost felt guilty paying $8 for this lunch. The tacos are packed, and I do mean PACKED, full of flavor and are presented as if you just walked into a cantina in Acapulco, Mexico. These have no shredded cheese, sour cream and are not served in an Americanized hard shell. These are the real deal with cilantro, onion and beautiful spices. The white corn tortilla shells are incredible with that ever-so-slight crisp on the exterior but still soft enough to enjoy through and through. My personal favorite? The chorizo with freshly-squeezed lime juice and Valentina hot sauce. So damn good. The frijoles were not what I expected but then again, I also didn't even think to be descriptive when I ordered. Rather than my favorite, frijoles negros, out came the pinto bean version and that's on me. Still good though with ample cheese, melted as a light blanket over the top. Their chips and salsas are also winners...maybe not the best of the best but still very good. SCORE: 4.8 STARS!! SERVICE: Here is where things can be tricky, based on your own personal experience and perception. Each time I have visited La Brasa, I have witnessed the same 3, young staff members working and overall, they do a fantastic job. They are very friendly and do follow up well with you at your table but there is a slight language barrier, which seems to make them feel somewhat nervous or uncomfortable at times. My advice to you as a future patron? If your primary language is English, speak slowly and with clarity. It will help your staff member be more comfortable around you, too. If you speak fast or use some American slang, things will get lost in translation. If you speak Spanish, please do so. La Brasa offers a true, authentic experience as you would receive near the western coast of Mexico. It can and does get loud in the bar area once work crews clock out for the day, but you can most certainly tell that they are enjoying themselves and feel right at home. If you want to get away from the noise in the bar area, La Brasa is divided in half with the second half being a segregated dining area with many booths and tables, more suitable for families with children. Each table has a variety of authentic hot sauces available. along with QR Codes to place your order and pay. Nice little feature there. Areas of opportunity: No public wi-fi accessibly. When I unpacked my laptop, got all set up...comfy and ready to write, I asked for the wi-fi password since there were 2 open networks available for La Brasa. I was then told that the wifi was not available for the customers. There is no signage or verbiage stating "available wifi", from what I observed, but it seemed odd to have 2 networks available but only for La Brasa business use. Plus, I think this may have been the first time any of them had been asked about wifi. No problem. Pick your battles, right?! Once finished, you can simply walk up to the station near the back wall to pay or you may pay from your table using the QC code or directly with your server. On a last note, Chef and owner, Noe Alvarez is one cool-ass dude! Met him last time around and this family man has a great personality. Do not hesitate to ask for Noe after your meal to compliment what he and his staff just made you. I think you'll want to do this anyway. It's not service on a pinnacle level by any means but if I were a traveler in Mexico and walked into a place like La Brasa...this is 5-Star stuff. All about perspective! My score? 4.1 STARS!! OVERALL SCORE: Best tacos in town; authentic flavors and service; cantina vibe; oh... and a full bar, plenty stocked with your favorite tequila, whiskey or cerveza. 4.6 STARS!!!

A hidden gem in Wilmington ... a well kept secret of the locals …read more.. From the outside .. it looks like a road side hole in the wall but once youre in, its a whole new world ! Most people enter the bar entrance where the small patio area is .. but on the other side of the patio is the main entrance where you are created by the host stand .. You would never know how big this place is from the outside but once in... its like one of the hamster cage cages with never ending tunnels to different rooms/area... RSVP are definitely suggested since walkins are usually in Bar area or Patio area .. which isnt bad .. but its limited seating .. Staff here are cool but service can be a lil wait if they are busy . Menu is a Panamanian vibe with lots of good eats .. One of the salsas you must get is the Elote salsa its very nommm nommmm next would be the Goat Gauc which is equally amazing. The Ceviche is a must get ... yes get the Quattro which is 4oz of each one so you can sample all ! The scallops and pork belly of mash is pretty good but would be better over the coconut rice . The special of the day was a sheepshead filet over risotto which was pretty damn good ! The corvina was ok but was a little bit over done and ended up a lil drier than expected. Highly recommend asking for the homemade hot sauce ... its amazing and goes on everything! This is definitely a locals Hotspot and an interesting place to people watch... Will definitely comeback for sure .

This is based on takeout***…read more Great vibe inside. Love the decor. Lobster ceviche is really good. Huge chunks in there and the flavor is great. The tortillas are really hard, difficult to eat and not very good though :( Ahi tuna was seared (not raw like I asked for) and the tortilla was burnt. Half wasn't edible... Coconut rice is sublime. Id go again but make different choices.

Writing about the new location in Castle Hayne which just opened on Castle Hayne Road. We have been…read morewaiting to try it and went Friday night. They have renovated the old space and opened it up into the adjacent store front. It's still a little tight and not long on ambiance but the food is amazing. I had the Texas fajitas which included shrimp steak and chicken. The tortillas appear to be made fresh. Portions are large. I had much more meat than guacamole salad, but it was well prepared and delivered sizzling. My wife had the skirt steak and was very happy with it. My daughter had a chicken dish which was smothered in queso which had just the right amount of heat. My son had tacos made with beef tongue- he is the adventurous eater- and ate every bite, paired with a tamarind soda. This appears to be family run - they were super friendly. Our waiter's English was not good, but we got through and he was very polite. They did not move us along and we needed to ask for the check when we were ready - once we asked we got checked out promptly. Pricing was very reasonable. All in all this is a great addition to the few restaurants in that area of town and as they get their feet under them I'm sure will only improve. We will be back as the food and friendly service is worth the trip.

My carryout Beef Huarache was disgusting! More than half the "beef" was gristle that was inedible…read more The remaining beef was overcooked and tough. It contained only a few beans, two tiny pieces of tomato and a small amount of cheese and sour cream. The tortilla was soaked with oil and beef grease and was also inedible. A very disappointing meal. I will not go back to La Esquinta in Wilmington, NC!

Visited this food truck at Broomtail Craft Brewery. Facebook is a good place to find out where they…read morewill be and what day/time. They accept credit cards. They have a variety of arepa fillings, including vegetarian as well as vegan cheese. You can choose whether you want it grilled or fried. Partner and I ordered both grilled ($8.75) and fried beef ($8.00) arepas and we got a huge portion of shredded beef. His beef was bulging out of his arepa. The beef was flavorful and moist, with a salty seasoning. The arepa corn flour dough thickness was good, not too thick and not too thin. We both couldn't finish our arepas-they were very filling. I'm glad I didn't order an addition of cheese because that would have been way too filling. They had 3 sauces you can add to your foods. Only got to try 2 of them: a spicy orange colored one and a cilantro one. They were both mayonnaise-based and made the arepa taste much better. Also tried a tequeno, a fried cheese stick of queso blanco enclosed in a pastry dough. The tequeno was good, not oily. White cheese does not melt much, so it's not very stringy. They advertised on Facebook (on the day we visited) that if you ask for the daily special you get a side of plantains for free. The plaintains came with cheese and were cooked well with some crispy bits. Next time I will try other arepa fillings!

I tried one of these (chicken) for the first time while a patron at Waterline Brewing. It was…read moreimpossible to eat in a ladylike manner whatsoever. I had to lean over to take each bite, because, if I had tried to pick it up, all of the food would have fallen out onto the table (because the container was so ridiculously small). Would never have one of these again.... especially at a WHOPPING $10 (for a sandwich!)

Ate at this food truck at Dead Crow Comedy. The food was good and they cooked it pretty quickly,…read moreless than 10 minutes. Tried the #6 Patacones and #9 Asadita Steak. The Patacones aka tostones ($11.15) was basically a small plantain sandwich with tons of shredded beef, slice of fresh mozzarella cheese, green sauce, sweet sauce, sandwiched in between two small crispy tostones. Wish I had some salsa to add to it to add extra flavor. The Asadita Steak ($12.25) was an arepa with carne asada, pico de gallo, green sauce. The arepa dough itself was crispy but a bit too oily. I liked their creamy mayo based spicy sauce they gave in separate containers. Not much vegetarian options other than sweet plantains and cheese. Food was overpriced, but still a solid food truck to try if you are willing to spend extra.

I got the Curvy Queen - shredded chicken in a creamy avocado sauce with cheese! Very tasty and a good even crisp on the arepa. My husband got the La Asadita steak which seemed a bit pricey but he enjoyed it. It was steak, pico and fresh mozzarella. They have a few other menu items that I'd like to try - plantains with cheese! We'll be back again to try them and to get my arepa fix!
