I have to share just how special our takeout experience from Papi Chulo's was! We decided to grab some food to go, and even though we weren't dining in, we felt the warmth and care that makes this place so special. We absolutely loved their queso--honestly, it's a must-have. The carne asada fries were delicious, and the Thursday quesadilla special was such a great deal at just $8. Everything tasted incredible, even after the drive home. But the real heart of our experience was David. Even though we just picked up our order, this "wee little man" (as we affectionately called him) poured so much heart into making our food and just brightened our day. His kindness and the care he showed made us feel like we were truly part of the Papi Chulo's family, even just picking up takeout. Has potential, but one employee at lunch on a Friday...this place will soon slip into 3 stars. Half of the menu is 86. It's not a one person show, something will slip cleanliness, customer service, or just length of service. The place itself is well done. Menu boards need brightening. Please teach employees to pronounce papi correctly. read more

My wife and I were in the area & found this little place on here. They had good reviews so we stopped in. The place was very clean & bright. The staff were very friendly & engaging. And the food was really good! We each got a shrimp street taco as well as a beef. We split a steak torta. My wife said it's probably the best one she's ever had! She also thought the tacos were good. We both thought they were loaded with steak/shrimp. I also thought every thing was really good!! We will definitely be back, if we get a chance. We loved this place until today! Guacamole was pasty and fake tasting this time and not the fresh and real stuff we are used to. My burrito wasn't tasty like it usually is, the beans tasted like they came out of a can and weren't even cooked, not much taste to the meat either and the rice was missing. My husband ordered the steak quesadillas and was loaded with a ton of onions and barely steak, and wasn't tasty or fresh like it usually is. Very disappointed because we don't have a ton of choices in St John, IN and we were so happy to find this place until our experience today, :( read more

I tried a few items from here. First, the chips and salsa. The chips were inedible. Chewy and super greasy, there was no crunch to the chips at all, and the grease on the chips was crazy. Each chip was super shiny. The salsa did not taste good either. The only flavor was tomato. I got the charred jalapenos and onions. I was expecting a whole jalapeno that was charred and some sliced onions that were charred. Instead I got pickled jalapenos which they threw on the grill with some finely diced onions. Both super greasy, everything was sticking together, and nothing was charred. I honestly don't know what they were thinking serving something like that. The salsas that came with the torta were both not good. I'm always looking for some spicy salsa, both had no spice. The cuban torta was pretty good though. But because of the other items, I will not be back. This is by far one of the worst Mexican places in the area. Definitely on the bottom of the list. If you can't bother to even look at the chips you are serving customers, I don't trust the other items that you are serving. read more

I love finding Mexican owned Mexican restaurants. I wasn't sure what to expect as it is Indiana after all but I was very impressed. They were busy today and even though we didn't have to wait too long for our food, they were very accommodating and apologetic for the wait. They had a rude customer who complained about the staff laughing and having fun instead of making his food fast. Buddy, if you want fast food go to Taco Bell. The owner and staff were very professional about it. I had a torta de pollo and it was great. Made with a classic telera, flavorful shredded chicken, a thin spread of beans and guacamole, lettuce, tomatoes, cilantro and onion. We also tried the tacos de asada and a gringo taco. They just opened a few days ago so I was fully prepared for the experience to be lack luster. I was so shocked at how well done it all was. We ordered a pastor burrito and steak quesadilla. We waited why they made our food. They had 2 online orders come in for pick up after we ordered so even tho it seemed empty they sure were busy at 11 am! Once our order was ready they included a free order of queso and chips for our wait (which I didn't feel like we waited that long but it was a great gesture!). I could not believe how heavy my burrito was, it had to be over 1lb. We really enjoyed it, especially with their salsas!! They are both (red and green) to die for!! Spicy and so flavorful!! So often you get heat and no flavor, these both were amazing! My husband's steak quesadilla was very good as well and with their salsas it just really took it up a notch. Now for the queso... my expectations were low, I love homemade queso but restaurant versions always seem lacking to me. This is the best restaurant queso I have ever had and I am not exaggerating. 10/10. I really hope this place sticks around, getting into the lot can be a hassle and will probably be its biggest hurdle... but once you get inside, they will have you coming back for more!! The "food" here is terrible. The "chips" taste awful, not even worth eating and the burritos are gross. Tortillas are nasty, the "meat", WTH is that even real meat? Nothing tasted like real food. Saint John finally has legit tacos!! Seriously, people, go get some gas station tacos. The shrimp and lengua were some of the best I've had. The steak was great and the pastor just okay. Put that creamy Verde salsa on EVERYTHING because you'll want to drink it. And don't be afraid of dining in because it is cute and colorful inside. I'm devastated! I was absolutely overjoyed when I first discovered Papi Chulo's. FINALLY, a delicious Mexican joint with flavorful food in the St. John area. The last 2 orders from them, however, were questionable as far as the taste and quality. Hubby & I were like "something's different" "The steak is dry and grizzly and it was not like before" Come to find out they have NEW OWNERS now :'[ The food noticeably tastes different. The quality of the steak is sooooooooo different. We went from literally rejoicing about discovering Papi Chulo's and raving to EVERYONE within earshot how fantastic it is to utter disappointment. The food is a 5. The best torta I have ever eaten. The steak burrito was top notch. The tortilla was crisped on the outside like a grilled stuft burrito. The chicken on the Papi style taco was well seasoned. The torta was ordered as a chicken torta, no lettuce. The man behind the counter kept saying steak. Three times I corrected him. The torta was delivered as a steak torta, with lettuce. Even with this service flaw, it was still the best I have ever tasted. I hope they keep the quality up as time passes because it is really good. The restaurant is very clean and modern. Hot damn baby finally a very good taco and burrito place. Best legitimate giant burrito in NWI and most of Chicago. You must try it out. Ive eaten thousands of burritos and tacos in my 60 years. All over the US and Mexico. And I've only had few better. This place is pretty good. I only wish that they flame grilled the meat. Still worth a solid grading. I'll be back to try some other dishes. Only complaint slight mix up on the meat order and they should wrap the tacos separately. Not complaining because it was still good. Complainers will however down grade. For me still 5 stars on great tasting Mexican. Service was very nice. Definitely try this place out.
