OK, once you get past the fact that it's a hole in the wall Mexican place let me tell you the service is great. They're always prompt. They bring you free chips and salsa to your table. I usually opt for the same thing every time, the queen which is skirt steak And rice and beans with a cheese enchilada and shredded lettuce and tomato it never disappoints. It's always spot on delicious it comes with your choice of corner flour tortillas. I always get corn. It's just a perfect meal. They have other things of course and my family gets those such as tacos or Maria that sort of thing Overall for the price point. You get a lot for your money. I am wondering if El Amigo, in Schererville, is under new management. Today, I was there having dinner. They were busy so there wasn't much of being checked in on, which is fine, I understand. When it came up to go pay. We proceeded to go pay and noticed that I was being charged a "fee" for using a debit card. Up to my current knowledge a debit card is not to be charged a "fee" like a credit card (could regulations/laws have changed and I was unaware absolutely). So then I proceeded to ask the lady why a "fee" was being charged on a debit card. She then proceeded to state that their system has always been doing it and that she has been there for the last 10 years. I have been going to this restaurant for about the last 10ish years and not once seen this person before. This person proceeded to become rude and blatantly nasty. I called her out on it and said "damn, you're rude" She proceeded to say "I don't care" and continued to repeat "I don't care" throughout the whole interaction, rather than try to come to a calm solution/explanation. For someone who works in a restaurant or a business I think that's highly unprofessional to be completely honest. I then proceeded to ask if there was someone above her who I could speak to about this for which she stated " God is above me". I responded to her saying absolutely "God is above all of us". She continued to be nasty and rude throughout the whole interaction. Another employee tried to come in, intervene, and help with the situation but she just gave the worker an attitude and told him to stay out of it. We ended up just paying it and whatever. As we walked out, she proceeded to tell us "Just f**cking leave". To add to this, during the interaction she proceeded to inform us this was her second time of the day arguing with someone. We absolutely left after we had paid. It's very unfortunate that a restaurant that I have loved going to for the last decade of my life I will no longer be going to. This all occurred because of one rude/nasty interaction with whom I believe to be a newer employee. I truly wonder what happened to the ownership here because the owner's son was always so polite, kind, approachable, and always went out of his way to interact with this customers. read more

Lived nearby for years but first time here. Anticipated just ok food but received amazing food! Carne Asada was so damn good, how in the hell did I not know about this place. When plate was served, you could smell the marinated and seasoning. Service was good and ambiance and music was on point. Will absolutely be coming back soon. Well, I absolutely love this place I've gotten a couple different items and they were delicious. BUT I'll say this my first Quesadilla ( steak) was the bomb! It was so freaking delicious, and let me tell you that cheese pull got me first bite ( not to mention the flavor) but I was very upset the last 2 times of ordering the quesadilla both times were so disappointing. The flavor wasn't as bold, and NO cheese pull what so ever. It was a steak taco in my opinion. I only post the truth because I would really love to order one again and it will be amazing. So the cooks please make a super delicious, cheesy quesadilla that I can rave about again. I don't want a taco ok That's my only complaint. read more

This place is located in a strip mall. When you walk inside you can see that it's an older facility. The furniture is worn, Hispanic music blares from a portable stereo unit located on the side wall. We were seated fairly quickly and the servers were friendly. The menu has a decent amount of selections to choose from for breakfast-dinner. Pricing is okay for what you're getting in some cases. In some cases, it seems a little high for what you're receiving. They serve you a small basket of chips and salsa to start. If you wan another basket you have to pay for it. The food was okay overall but the tostada de ceviche was just okay. The carne asada is made with flank steak which was marinated well. Overall, just an okay place for Mexican food. But being from Southern California we are a little spoiled. read more

I've been going here for the last 20 years from when it was on the other end of the strip mall. Tonight is the last time I'll ever go again. We waited over an hour for a taco dinner and 2 chicken tacos. The table next to us came in a half hour after us and got their food and we still didn't receive ours. Another guy came in and ordered a to go order and after 40 minutes he was still waiting after I complained. I paid for my 3 beers and told them it's unacceptable to wait over an hour and the place wasn't even that busy. Something really has to change before they go out of business. The owner and his wife are rude. I went for dinner tonight and they added a $3 charge for taco sauce. Are you kidding me?? They said I asked for extra. When I did not ask for extra, I already had sauce on the table. Why would I order more. I wanted a different "red sauce" for the tacos. So they should have said, these are the only two we offer. If you want more it's $3. Clearly if you charge for every little thing you should voice that to your customers. Not tell them they are wrong and they usually don't have to tell there customers about every little charge. Well failing to disclose your pricing is, BAD BUSINESS, yes it was only $3 but it was merely the principal and his attitude, was basically it's not coming off the check and I have to pay it. If you want to keep your loyal customers coming, you take "accountability" for your actions and take the three dollars off the check. But NO they chose to argue me down and be rude about three dollars, embarrassing themselves in front of all of their guest. I'll take my money elsewhere... Bad service, one waiter for a full restaurant? i had to just about tackle the server guy for another beer and more chips as he would do anything to not look your way as he tried to escape before you got his attention. Worse,..just bad Mexican generic food. My wife had an avocado burrito that had little inside of it so it had more folds in it than a fat person's belly after a gastric bypass surgery.
