I finally tried a new restaurant that I've passed by a thousand times and wished I had visited sooner. We were seated right away, and the service was great--the waitresses were friendly and attentive. The décor featured authentic Mexican touches, which really added to the experience. The food did not disappoint. I ordered a variety of tacos: steak (carne asada), chicken (pollo), and al pastor. I enjoyed all of them. The al pastor was a bit spicy, so if you like heat, that's the taco for you! My favorite, though, was the steak taco--so soft and delicious. Honestly, it was the best steak taco I've had in Indiana and Chicago. If you're looking for a new Mexican restaurant to try, this one is a must! read more

A friend recommended this place to me so I decided to try them out. I ordered the carne asada quesadillas and they were pretty good! They were thick and the meat was very flavorful. Really enjoyed my horchata and the sides were pretty standard. When i picked up my order, the greeted my nicely and served me quickly. Great chicken mole! There are many other delicious items on the menu so try them. Had the chorizo and eggs for breakfast; their refried beans are always great. Waitresses are attentive and will explain some unfamiliar dishes. Regional Spanish music is played but not overbearing. Enjoy! read more

I have to be honest. I went 2 times to the restaurant, the 1st time I had a burrito dinner it was awesome steak was good was very juicie 2nd time was good food also. A few days ago I ordered online, had a burrito dinner. It was very dry hardly and meat was tasteless. I would have sent it back if I was closer. My husband and were there with friends from Texas. They ordered the mixed fijitas. They told the waitress they were going to share. The waitress didn't bring an extra plate, and enough tortillas, my husband and I ordered the caldo the res. It looked like they use frozen mixed vegetables, the carne had so much fat on it, I spend time trimming it, there was no cabbage, no corn, no calabasa, the potatoes were very small. Let me start off by saying that I have visited the Burnham location quite a few times in the past. I've been to the Dyer location about 3 occasions that I can recall. I like that the menu is the same and the cooking is consistent. In Dyer, I'll say that it's as close to Mexican home cooking as you can get. My usual go to is the stuffed shrimp wrapped in bacon. This dish is my safe zone. I've had their Seafood Parrillada and and Mixed Parrillada. Parrilladas are smalls grills brought out to your table with your choice of protein. I was there last Saturday and went for something different. Since they specialize in Cecina, I decided to go with Cecina Campesina. The sauce on this dish is really good. From what I saw and tasted, it's a red sauce with cactus. Everything in the dish feels fresh. The beans taste fresh. Everything is seasoned generously but not overpowering. The sauce had a nice spicy kick but not overbearing. Many dishes, including this one, are served with homemade and handmade tortillas. They usually provide salsa and chips. The salsa looks and rates like itMs freshly made and ground in the Molcajete. Prices are very reasonable. Yes, you can find good Mexican food in Dyer! One of the few restaurants near us open on July 4th, and it didn't disappoint. The shrimp ceviche was pretty good, and TBH I could probably destroy a bowl if it was at a cook out. Ask for the creamy salsa Verde for it, it's super spicy and so good on the cold ceviche. They have a full bar too! I can't wait to go back to try the birria. read more

I've been to another LaCecina in Calumet City, and I've been to this one before also. The Cal City one is awesome, but when this location opened, i was unimpressed. The food was bland, the salsa had no flavor or heat. Things have changed here!! The server was friendly, fast and attentive. She was constantly buzzing about asking what we needed. THE FOOD: The salsa was tasty, smokey jalapenos skin in it for tremendous flavor, cilantro and onion is awesome. For entree I ordered the Cecina Campesina, which is Grilled flank steak covered with a sauce made from nopales (cactus), onion, tomato, cilantro, whole beans, and cheese. The mix of flavors in the dish I find irresistible. The tenderness of nopales with the beans and cheese and meat is superb. I could eat two or three platefuls. A small salad of lettuce, cucumber, and radish is small, but bright and tasty with a squirt of lime. The spanish rice is delicious, also. They put carrots and, at times peas in it. Great stuff. Their tortillas are made right there, too. My dining companions had the Caldo de Camarones (Shrimp Soup), and Ranchero Breakfast which they were delighted with. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal tonight. I had the house special: La Guerra, AKA smoked meat dish. It was so much food that I couldn't eat but half of it. It had warm tortillas, guacamole, pico de gallo and whole beans. It was delicious! The guacamole was the best I've had! Made to order with fresh avacados, onions and tomatoes. The salsa for the chips and salsa wasn't great. My dinner mate had the chicken pasta alfredo. It was very good, with lots of grilled chicken, carrots, onions and broccoli. Was there on a Wednesday evening 7pm, and the place was absolutely packed. Business must be good. Under staffed though. The hostess was also the waitress, and also the bartender pouring some drafts. The chips and salsa were great. Chips were standard. But the salsa was Amazing, and served warm. Nice touch.. Ordered the Sopa Azteca. It was ok, I've had better. But at almost $10.00 for a soup.... it was a very small bowl. I was expecting a decent sized serving for 10 bucks, thinking that would be a nice quick meal. But it was small portion. I went with my girrrlz... so fun! Did you know they have homemade tortillas?! Well. You do now. They are so soft and so yum. Also... They have soup. ON THEIR MENU. Which means they ALWAYS have soup. Not just on the weekends. Not just on holidays. ERRYDAY, people. And it's pretty good too. (They do NOT have pozole...) Their salsa... also pretty good. They could easily have gotten 4 stars except... Okay. Is everyone ready for my BIGGEST pet peeve? If you see my water glass is empty please fill it. That is called service. Please don't make me ask you for water EVERY time I need more. I mean, I'm an ice eater. So, that means my water AND my ice were gone and I still had to ask. Also. I'll admit we were there for a bit... 3.5 hours. It would've been nice to still have been checked on. There were not people waiting to get in. They were not sending people away. I know this cuz I kept checking. We're nice and considerate. We would've left and gone to Starbucks. I hate to end this on a bad note cuz they weren't HORRIBLE but... My parents have been customers of La cecina for years and are well known to the service workers. Unfortunately, on the last time they ate there my mom who is elderly, 90 years old ordered Chiles rellenos. Her order arrived uncooked with no egg batter on the order!Underneath the poblano Chile was another chile half bitten! My mom informed the waitress who offered no explanation or apology. We loved this place; but about 2 weeks ago, we decided to go for lunch during the week, ordered margaritas. The waitress had no experience in making them. I tried to give this place a chance. The same name restaurant in Cal city is a hidden gem and much much better. So I stop here because it's closer to my house, never again. I find that the enchiladas are sloppily made. The final straw was the lunch special pork in red sauce. They give me a measly portion of not pork but pork short ribs. The beans and red sauce were extra salty and I'm a fan of salt. The meat was again a meager portion but half was bones. I can't eat bones and I'm supposed to pull this meat which was not soft off to make a taco? I had more tortillas than rib meat. Trust me, this cook or the owner are out of touch. The Food: The food was cause they sell your typical Mexican restaurant food, but they had shakes. I had the quesadillas with chicken and a shake and that was super delicious!! +4.5* Service: The service was 2 out of 5 stars cause the waitress came like 5-10 minutes late and are chips came lake. We ask for more chips and that cake 5-10 minutes late or even more. Like 2 minutes after we got our chips our food came and it was delicious. No one not even our waitress ask us how was our food was and it took like 20-30 minutes for our waitress to give us a bag, a receipt, and some boxes. I believe that this is one of the best Mexican restaurants I have been to! As expected, the servers were gracious and attentive. The Big surprises came with the appetizers. My guacamole was the best I have ever had--a symphony of flavors. My dining companion ordered a bowl of chicken soup. The SOUP arrived in a container the size of a mixing bowl on an oval platter. Needless to say the chicken was flavorful and the vegetables perfect. Things got better. We both ordered the shrimp with rice and it was divine. The corn tortillas were perfect. Anyway, our only complaint was that we needed a couple of hulking marines fresh from a 50 mile hike to help us consume the entire repast. This place has some amazing food. I ordered the dried meat with molcajete sauce and melted cheese and it was amazing. Thin sliced carne asada, marinaded, juicy and full of flavor. They make their own corn tortillas and they are some of the best I've ever eaten. My girlfriend had a steak taco and steak tostada, both were very good. The steak was delicious! The burrito looked amazing when it was brought to my table but had no flavor. My husband said that the salsa was not that great but his meal was pretty decent. He had steak tacos. The refried beans and rice were not good. The beans were sort of scary. They were more like baby food with absolutely no chunk of bean whatsoever. Maybe this is normal? I guess everywhere else I have been serves beans that have a good texture. I had a margarita and it looks Ike's beautiful but you couldn't taste any liquor. I hate to give places an unfavorable review but it was sub par according to my taste buds. Maybe it was an off day? How did I forget to write this review? I've literally had nightmares about this place. Maybe I was raging to so many people I assumed I already told everyone. My friend recommended this place to me (shame on him). I never doubt him on Mexican restaurants (he's 100% Mexican himself)!!! Apparently it used to be good. That's what many people have told me. He even suggested we leave and head somewhere else shortly after being seated. One day I'll learn to listen to my gut. The bartender was literally spraying Raid ALL OVER the bar as we sat down. I was choking!!! I don't even want to know why she needed so much Raid! I ordered steak fajitas thinking it would be safest. It wasn't brought out on a skillet. It was all thrown together on a room temperature plate. It looked like it was made the previous day. It was awful!! We took 2 bites of our food and left to eat somewhere else. It was disgusting! This place has quickly become a family favorite of ours. They have a very diverse menu with a very large and quite good seafood selection. They have different platters that come to the table on a hot table called a paradilla. It was INCREDIBLE. I also have a number of food allergies, and they have always gone out of their way to accommodate me, right down to making a fresh pico de gallo as I am allergic to hot peppers. They also make their own corn tortillas. I do not drink, however I have seen the margaritas and they look and smell wonderful! Addition: The last time I was there I had the snapper grilled with garlic... I have only had one better and it was in Puerta Vallarta! Wonderful!
