I started going to this place with my dad when I was a kid (waaay too long ago). It was a special treat to get doughnuts on the weekend. They also did my wedding cake almost 20 years ago. I stopped in yesterday for something sweet, and was reminded just how good this bakery is. I was on a quest for something sweet again. The exterior looked inviting and I was ready to give this place a try. My significant other and I walked inside. There was a sign that stated PLEASE Take A Number. Our Number was H38. I browsed around to see what was offered. We were called on and then we went to the counter to order. I put our Number in the Old tickets Here! bucket. In the FROM THE COOLER section, Assorted Cake Slices Chocolate Covered were $4.25. I got one of those. We sat down at a table for a moment to relax. That was a nice feature they had. After I got home, I tried it out. The first bite was okay. It seemed dry to me. After the second bite, I was bored. It lacked flavor. I wasn't impressed. We dropped in while in the neighborhood and got a few of their chocolate cake donuts - 5 star stuff. Years ago I used to work down on State Road in Calumet City near the Indiana border and every once in awhile we'd get a tray of these beauties to share with the staff ... they were always winners and are still just as good. They only allow prepayment to be made online so if your order is wrong, there's nothing you can really do when you pick it up. They completely messed up an order for a birthday cake for my 79 year old sister and refused to do anything about it!! I know that others have had the same experience with rude staff that realize there has been an error. First off--Calumet Bakery is booked and busy, honey. Was, is, and will always be. I've always heard about them but haven't gotten a chance to check them out until recently when trying to figure out where I should order my mother's 60th birthday cake. Now the ordering experience was a bit interesting but the results were amazing! I pre-ordered via email about a week prior to her birthday with the intention of stopping in during the week to place my deposit. When I got there, they didn't have my order and couldn't locate the email thread I had going with them although I showed them on my phone. They were able to sit down with me to and place my order. To be honest, yes they are busy but this is an area of theirs that clearly needs to be worked on especially when everyone isn't able to place pre orders in person. Their customer service is terrible!!! I called to order a birthday cake and was told to go online and make a deposit first. I go online and make a deposit but you can't place an order online. So I call back to place the order after several attempts someone finally answered the phone but wouldn't allow me to place order by phone. Since I gave a deposit online I must place the order online. She acknowledged there isn't an order from online but since I started a Q/A form online I must continue on that form and she had more questions for me that she would send those online. I asked since I've already paid my deposit and we are finally connected can we just complete the order. She said no, that's not how it works.
