Went back to Ruben's while visiting the Region this past weekend. It is so solid. Had the carnitas tacos, OMG. Best carnitas I have had in a long time. I have to give the horchata a shout-out. Stopped in yesterday after a nail appointment with the kids. Was told they were very good by the nail tech. I'd say the food was so so. Upon entry the store was very clean. There were a few tables filled up and one waitress for the entire store. (From what I saw) We did receive great service by her! The table salsa was good, but I was not a fan of the chips. Kind of stale. The salsa verde had a nice flavor and the salsa Maria had a kick to it! I ordered the taco salad and it was okay. Big portion full of lettuce, tomatoes, peppers/onions, cheese, chicken, and black olives. I personally think the black olives are not a good mix on this. Maybe some beans? Felt like there was something missing/misplaced. The shell was great, and I added on guac on the side. However, the condiments just didn't make that much sense to me. They had a lime cilantro vinaigrette or ranch has an option so I got both. The ranch was a pre packaged looks like it came from a fast food restaurant. Horrible flavor. My ranch loving son didn't even want it with his fries. I didn't get a lot of flavor from the vinaigrette either. So I was glad that I added the guac on as that was the only saving grace for some sort of flavor. I'm definitely going to try this place out again and give the REAL Mexican food a chance as I feel a taco salad isn't "authentic". But it was what my daughter wanted to share so I got it! Giving a STRONG 3 star review for the so so food. But I'm looking forward to coming back and hopefully trying better food so I can review higher! read more

This restaurant has been one of our favorite restaurants to eat at. Food is excellent and service is good. I have to put 3 stars because COVID is OVER and these closed tables are an absolute ridiculous thing. You are losing business and customers. It has been already proven that distancing does NOTHING for Covid. If you are that worried wear a mask but for the love of God open your tables so people can eat your delicious food! read more

Ruben's is the best kept secret in Dyer, Indiana, if you are looking for a Mexican Restaurant that has a great variety of food to choose from and purely authentic then Ruben's is the place for you. They serve you hot chips and salsa upon arriving and then soon your dinks will come with a smile. The food is the most delicious and the guacamole will let's just say it will knock your socks off. The whole family makes sure that you are well taken care of and lacking nothing. Thank you Ruben's for an incredible meal and amazing service. Foodies please take notice of Ruben's The only thing that needs work is the setting, my guest and I sat in front of the window, very private until the server brought in another couple. It was pretty good... There are definitely better Mexican joints in the area but I wouldn't oppose to go back at all. Met up with a girlfriend one day for lunch. I got the pozole for FIVE bucks. Now... this isn't the hugest of servings but fantastically perfect for me and well worth the five dollars. The service is super sweet and there is lot parking, so yay! read more

Mexican food is my favorite. Fresh chicken tacos to be specific. I gave up on Mexican restaurants in my area in Illinois. Decided to try a few across the border in Indiana. This is the 2nd place I've tried in Indiana and I can stop looking. This place has amazing food and amazing service. Please don't change. We have a new restaurant opening by me all the time. They start off good and then they get lazy and careless. The meat gets fatty. They switch to dark meat. They lack flavor and they go downhill. Your chicken tacos are the best. I love how the tortillas are slightly crispy. The cheese is fresh, the chicken is fresh. We've been here maybe 8 times since we found you and every time, everything we've ordered has been amazing. So. FRESH. No fat, lots of flavor. We just love it. It's well worth the 40 minute drive. read more

This place is worth the trip. The margaritas were better than the old Favorite location. The menu has a great variety and I will put on some vehicle miles to be a regular here. Free chips and salsa were great! We bought some to go, for later! The elotes were good, still love the ones off the street cart in Tijuana though! We had guests coming in late, so we ordered dinner here for pickup. The tacos/burritos/chips etc. all came out well. The steak tacos were delicious. The reason for three stars is my disappointment with the "choriqueso." I thought it would be a well mixed product combining two of my favorite foods. Oh wow. What a major slip in food quality and ambiance. I came here on a Sunday afternoon during the heat wave. The restaurant was empty except another table. Lots of catering orders going out. I ordered the beef quesadillas and they were actually awful. They were falling apart due to lack of cheese. Zero flavor and kid of gross. The accomplishments were lettuce and tomato with a very small to-go sour cream. Very lacking. I had the surf and turf tacos with shrimp and beef and these were better. What was upsetting is that their coconut margaritas were phenomenal and now they were actually awful. Shreds of coconut, not creamy, not tasty, bitter. I also ordered a non-alcoholic one for my dad and they could not accommodate the request "my manager won't allow me to make the margarita without alcohol". He didn't say it's a mix and it includes alcohol. The waiter was fabulous and very attentive. I felt bad for him because he could have been working at an upscale place. I tipped him well for his efforts but won't be back. I feel bad when local restaurants slip this bad. read more

There isn't any restaurant I'd rather be quarantined with than Ruben's! They're always wonderful but have been my #1 lockdown go-to. They take such great care in checking your order which is always accurate. They package everything beautifully. As far as the food.. we get set in our ways and repeat the fajitas and enchiladas with green sauce often. Oh so delicious. The salsa is the best around. Food was pretty decent. Steak tacos were a little overdone / crispy meat. My hubby has enchiladas and liked them a lot. Guacamole was so/so lots of filler compared to avocado ratio. Staff was friendly. I think the only turn off for me is that they kept a bucket of salsa at a hostess station next to cleaners. We ordered some catering for a small family gathering and this place was easy to work with, friendly, and reasonably priced. We got the mini taco bar and it was plenty of food for 8 people and we had good left overs. The food was authentic and good. This is the BEST Mexican restaurant in the Region! The food is always on point, the margaritas are fire, the place is always clean, and the staff is super friendly! The three drinks I love to get when I visit are Ruben's Patron Margarita, the coconut margarita, and the original Piña Colada!! These are some stellar drinks, and a great preface to fantastic food, but first some chips and salsa. I seriously don't know why their chips and salsa are the best, but the are seriously the best! I like to add a little of the homemade red sauce to salsa for a little kick. It is so good!! I typically order the chicken burrito suizo dinner, and it never disappoints. The burrito is HUGE! My husband loves the shrimp burrito, shrimp tacos, and shrimp fajitas...he claims that the shrimp is cooked better than most seafood restaurants. The staff is top notch! Super friendly, and ultra accommodating. They never make you feel rushed, even when they are busy, and they let you enjoy yourself. Ruben's is awesome! The food was excellent and the prices were very good for the quality of food. They serve beer and mixed drinks so it is a good date spot or even great for family dinners.
