This was a fun venue. I loved that there was a huge outdoor bar area with lots of tables and everone was comfortable sitting together and meeting each other. The bar staff were wonderful! Super friendly and attentive. What I didn't care for was the amount of smoking. I get it, we're on the outside part of the bar, but man the cigarettes and cigars was a bit overwhelming. I guess I didn't realize how prevalent it still is to smoke in public. On to the show... It was phenomenal. We stayed at the back because this lady couldn't handle a mosh pit at 20, much less now. We had a pretty good view, there was lots of dancing and singing, it was so much fun! My only issue was that some of the vocals were so low. It was sometimes difficult to discern the song being played. Not sure if that had to do with where we were positioned, but it didn't change the fact that we had an amazing time. I would definitely come back, but probably wait until closer to show time to arrive to avoid waiting in the smoking section. read more

This was my first time going to this venue and with a friend who lives here. Parking is very difficult. We ended parked on a residential street in front of someone's home and not blocking their driveway. Bear in mind this venue is not a fancy concert venue. Some have even called it a dive bar. We attended a sold out show for The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and there were other bands that performed on the smaller stage simultaneously. The start time seemed to vary per social media/business platform so we aimed to get there as close to the time as TRJA would be going on. I had the whole TSA like door experience even with my small, 7 inch body purse. Had to show them every pocket before being allowed inside. We went straight to the bar and I ordered the grapefuit mule which might as well had been called the grapefruit flavored ginger beer as it had not a single ounce of vodka in it that I could taste. So that was $20+ wasted on one drink (including tip). The ice quickly melted in the 90 degree temperature at 10pm so the drink got watered down as well. The venue itself is maybe 90% outdoors so I was glad I chose to wear a tank and shorts plus closed toed shoes as my friend warned me about that in advance as well. Being Emo Prom night and near a neighboring college, most attendees were very hyped up and crowd surfing. A lady busted through the crowd and stepped on my shoe that I was so glad protected my feet and I got shoulder checked by some emo dude that was like 6'4" which thankfully he apologized for unlike the lady who stepped on my shoe trying to get closer to the stage. In 90+ degrees, even in a mostly open air venue, my sense of smell which is every strong was being attacked at all times. Body odor and hot garbage smells filled my nose constantly. My friend had warned me about the restrooms in advance. We even went back to her place to grab her hand sanitizer before we went there. When I walked in, every single door had spray paint on it and questionable locks. I ended up in the handicap stall as all the others were occupied. It smelled awful in there but that's what public restrooms mostly comprise of. The water faucet is the kind you have to push in to keep running water over your hands to wash off the soap so I had an elbow to the faucet while washing each hand. Only one hand dryer worked so I had to wait to use that. The main stage has a covering with a few industrial fans that you could barely feel any air pump out of so to me it was not worth it to even stand under the covered part. Balloons from prom kept being tossed up near the fan so it got stuck in the back of the fan and staff had to keep turning them off to make the balloons drop off the back of the fan. The show itself was great and the side acts were great but man!!! I felt so disgustingly sweaty and stinky after we left. I took a long shower after we got back to her place. :-/ read more

Came here for Emo Nite on 10/25 and the flyer said that the show would start at 8pm. We were not let inside until around 8:40pm. I stayed until about 10pm and the band still had not come on. I've heard great things about this venue, but this was not a great first impression and felt like a waste of $20. read more

I really liked this place a lot! But to be honest, I'm a dive bar kinda person so it may not be your thing. The best part is that there is lots of seating outdoors to rest your feet from standing inside for too long. The bathrooms are grungy and cool if you're into that but not dirty. We went to see Luicidal and Eye Hate God. Had a killer spot up front by the stage speakers. Had no issues with anyone there. Security does check thoroughly and collect items up front of not allowed in. You are able to retrieve it back at the end of the show, if it's still there of course, as nothing gets name tagged. This is a very small venue so it gets hot pretty quickly. I wish they could have opened more of the garage doors. Also for safety reasons, I did not see multiple exit options or thorough checks of the people entering the area.. Lastly, I did not have a good service experience when requesting ADA accommodation during the DESTIN CONRAD concert. One of the young males in the bartender area was so rude and dismissive but the guy with the beard came and helped. The female bartenders were kind though. I appreciated that there was plenty of free street parking the int the area. There are food trucks outside the venue if you get hungry. read more

Went there last weekend to see an artist. A cool venue. They have food trucks outside. Once they let you "in" there's a patio area with a bar outside. Had to wait there before they opened the main doors. It was a good size place. No AC and it was a hot day. Once u go on they have garage doors on the opposite end that they left open to another patio area where they had the artists merch tables. Inside it was pretty hot as well. It cooled off a little once they opened doors on the entry side, wish they had done that in the beginning. Sound system was good. Def wouldn't go to this venue during the summer it's just way too hot read more

Paper Tiger is the new name in an old shell (used to be named The White Rabbit) and I had a lot of fun at a recent show I attended here. Not only was the staff super nice and service was great at a sold out show but the venue took checking vaccination status/cards super seriously which I appreciate. They might have been accommodating to the artists and bands that were playing that evening but the door guy at the front was diligent and thorough when checking the vaccination pictures, cards, and whatnot before entering. Drinks were priced on par with the rest of the other bars and venues up and down St. Mary's strip. I did appreciate the large 24 oz Lonestar cold beers on tap on top of all kinds of brands of liquor for you-call-it shots and cocktails. Parking is bad but it is always bad no matter where you go up and down The Strip but it is do-able if you get down there early. I ended up taking a rideshare down which made it a no fuss and no stress situation for me especially when I was done with the show. There are 2 stages/areas for bands to play and maybe 1 more (outside patio) if Paper Tiger has that set up for the band/artists you are coming to see. Super easy and fluid to come in and out of each stage area and you really never know who you are going to catch (local or national) so I definitely encourage you to hop around from stage to stage. read more

This is a great little standing-room venue to see good live music. The wife and I went to see Stabbing Westward and found a perfect place to stand by the mixing booth. The sound setup was great, but a little loud and over-modulated at times. There is no dedicated parking so make sure you park in an area that does not have any no parking/tow away signs. Many of the local businesses are closed at the time shows go on but they do enforce towing and make a big business from it. There are many really good places to eat or have some craft drinks close by. I will return again when they have another band I like. read more

Solid shows! The St. Mary's area is under construction at the moment so parking and driving around the area is a bit fudgy until that's done. Staff is friendly, bathrooms are for the most part clean (considering the amounts of people?) and the venue opens up to allow more people into a patio area. I really like the venue and the bands they bring in. They didn't have napkins available at the bar and they don't have any options to eat without having to leave the premises. There's a food truck right outside and maybe one more option to eat down the street, close enough walking distance. But I personally think that's a missed opportunity; when people are drinking they usually want to snack or get hungry(?) I went to an early event and stayed through 1 am (from 3pm) and went out to eat twice, had they sold even bags of chips, they'd likely profit from it.. and having more variety of drinks including non-alcoholic items aside from water would be nice.. It's really a brass-tacks, music oriented place.. and no shade, for sure one of my fav venues ever. :) read more

The show was great ... no complaints there. My ticket was about $30 and that's not too bad, but the limited parking on site was $20 ... that's ridiculous. I got there early because I didn't know if I would be able to get good parking. I didn't like having to wait on the outside patio until the show began. It's like 200 degrees outside ... they need some fans and misters. Once I get inside, during the opening acts, I noticed some ceiling fans weren't spinning. They eventually came on when the main act hit the stage. Definitely could use more fans. Oh and that ceiling could use a good scrape ... just saying. The inside vibe was cool ... I could tell that everyone was a music lover and enjoyed the show. The performance was first class, Souls of Mischief gave it all they got and didn't hold back. I've been to multiple shows here and they were all lights out. A very intimate and simple venue with standing room only. The sound quality is surprising considering the layout and openness. It is small but when they open up the doors, it does not feel claustrophobic. The safety monitoring has always been good when surfing and mosh gets going and everyone is pretty chill. Drink options are reasonable and the merch set ups do not interfere with the view. I enjoy every show here and prices are always doable. Recently St. Mary's has improved on access and food vendors are now everywhere on the block. Good times. read more

A perfectly acceptable and extremely versatile venue. We have a small room, where I've seen lesser known bands such as The Rocketboys and Swimming with Bears. It's isolated enough to not take much damage from the main venue when it's in full swing, and maintains an intimate vibe. Perfect for introverts. The main stage can convert from an indoor venue to a semi-outdoor venue depending on how popular the band/artist you're seeing is. I saw Atlas Genius as a solely indoor venue, and it was amazing, and I also saw the Growlers, where they opened up a wall to allow a larger crowd to enjoy the show. One nitpick I have is I wish they'd have separate lines for main shows and shows for the small room. There were maybe 20 folks for the show in the small room, and we all had to wait in the quarter mile long line for the main event we had no interest in seeing. read more

This is a cool venue concept in the middle of a neighborhood in San Antonio. Since they don't have AC, the fall, winter and spring months are best to visit the Tiger. Summer is too hot to stand inside in a crowd anywhere without AC. We came out in December for an all-ages live music show, which was strangely relegated to the small garage stage area, while a booming DJ mix overspilled from the large metal building. Sitting at one of the picnic tables in the beautiful open courtyard, we found that mix was still incredibly loud and tended to drown out the live music. Not many people were dancing in the big room, but instead chose to sit along the edge of the stage or walk around while others formed a mosh pit. The crowd that night was mostly in their 20s, but others looked to be in high school. There's a bar in the back of the large building and outside near the smaller building. Both seem to have the same limited variety of beers and alcohol for mixed drinks, which are served in small plastic cups with ice. Call drinks were $7/single shot and $10/double shot, and well drinks were a dollar less. Pay cash to keep track of how much you're being charged, as other patrons have complained when using credit cards. When the bands were playing in the small garage stage area, people packed in to watch, since they kept the large garage door closed, and it got pretty crowded in there. The sound inside was also very loud, so bring earplugs. Once again, the same few spiked patrons from the larger building started a mosh pit in front of the stage, scattering the tightly packed crowd. Management did not intervene and several people were left bleeding afterward. Which brings me to the suggestion that this club really needs to ban spikes and chains like most did when moshing was popular in the '80s and '90s... With a few tweaks in sound volume/balance, management and logistics, this club could be a very desirable venue for rock music in San Antonio. They seem to host some very good regional and touring acts. Parking is on the street in the neighborhood. Overall, 3-1/2 stars. read more

Crowds make me anxious and prolonged heat makes me nauseous. Why, then, did I brave the elements and attend a concert at an outdoor venue on a sweltering summer night in San Antonio? Because post-punk/electronic/new wave/cold wave/goth/industrial (pick your label) pioneer Gary Numan (yes, the "Cars" guy) made a once-in-a-lifetime stop in my hometown, a city of aesthetically challenged metal head dingbats. My favorite musicians rarely perform here, so I couldn't let this opportunity pass me by. I swallowed my Prozac (okay, okay, my organic chamomile-lavender tea) and headed out to Paper Tiger, a tiny little venue in a sketchy part of town. Everything about the Paper Tiger (the Latin-inspired graffiti art, the neckbearded hipster bartenders, the tiny outdoor stage) felt wrong for a Numan gig. After all, I'm talking about the nihilistic, eternally truculent synth futurist whose lavish multi-million-dollar productions (swirling pyramids, miniature cars, Moog synths galore) once attracted an audience big enough to fill Wembley Stadium. I wouldn't expect him to play the Alamodome, but a modest venue like Paper Tiger is better suited to a local act, not someone of Numan's stature. The concert was a hit despite the poor choice of venue. The acoustics were mixed well (excellent electronic bass on "My Name Is Ruin"), the attendees seemed *somewhat* familiar with his material, and the energy felt right throughout the 90-minute set. Always the consummate professional, Gary withstood the heat* and tore through his set with the energy of a man half his age. The new material (most of it from his most recent album, "Savage") sat comfortably beside industrialized, heavier versions of past glories, including "Down in the Park," "Are 'Friends' Electric?" and "Cars." I realize this review has less to do with the Paper Tiger than it does with Gary Numan and my neurotic hangups, but I know almost nothing about the venue. I just know that I didn't care for the atmosphere and will likely never return. Maybe Thomas Dolby will play S.A. and secure a gig in the handicapped bathroom stall at Griff's Burgers. A little hole in the wall live music establishment that is a wonderful addition to the SA live music scene. The bathrooms are clean and the graffiti is interesting. The bars are well tended and fairly well stocked. There is a chill atmosphere and the art is a good conversation starter. I enjoyed the outdoor seating. They have water jugs throughout the place which is great for the DDs or those who just want water. I am hoping more bands we like bon at this venue. It was easy enough to find parking and the assortment of resturants in the vicinity provide options for pre or post show consumption. There are two stages. One, the "main" one based on who played there, seem to be surrounded by doors that can raise to expand the space as needed. Even when sitting outside, you can hear the bands. read more

Been here for 2 shows this year and both were a good experience. Let's be clear: this is a club, not a theatre so I judge it against say Barracuda in Austin. They get similar acts so saves me drive time. (2 shows I saw were Pedro The Lion and The Black Pumas) I do like it. On street parking is OK. Some nearby places to eat - it's in the N St Mary's area so things are going on. Bar is minimal but OK. Sound can be very good but sometimes they overdrive for some reason, so take your eargasms as it's a small place. If you want to hear and see a band - try it! At the Aztec or Tobin or Majestic, you'll pay a lot more and be further away, by a lot. Here, I was 25 ft from The Black Pumas and it was super. It is SRO with a few scant chairs so don't wear stupid shoes.... Most tickets are $20 or less, which is about what Ticketmaster charges just in fees for a ticket. read more

I saw Y'all Out Boy and they were great; it would have been awesome if they didn't start an hour after the start time advertised. The bar service inside leaves something to be desired. I ordered two Long Island ice teas and was charged $48. That would be fine, if she knew how to make one, but she added more coke than alcohol. There is just supposed to be a splash of coke at the end, not mixed in twice when making the drink. There were definitely not 1.5 ounces of alcohol in our drinks. Caveat emptor. read more

I've been here several times now and lets get real, this venue is a large garage with a stage and a couple courtyards. The location is great on N. St. Mary's but parking is nonexistent for the venue, requiring you to try and find street parking or risk getting towed at one of the area bar/restaurant lots. Once inside the venue, there's a courtyard on each side of the building. Inside, it really does have a garage feel with roll-up garage doors, no air-conditioning in summer, no seating, and one bar in the rear. The sound isn't that great as it can have a boomy sound due to the fact that IT'S IN A GARAGE! When comparing the Paper Tiger to other small venues in the area, it's a two star review due to the lack of parking, no seating, no air conditioning and poor sound. In the future, I'd have to really want to see a band to catch them here. read more

My first time at this venue was to see my new best friend *in my head* Lizzo! She performed in the larger venue area. Overall it's not a big spot and it's like a warehouse, dark and no windows. Their was a security guy there and he took his job super serious. I got there early to get a good standing spot near the stage and the guy was already barking at people and nothing was even going on. It started to get hot in the venue, but luckily they have these rolling garage doors and they rolled them up so it created an indoor/outdoor area and brought in some air to circulate. In all I really can't say anything bad about this space. It's located in a fun area, there are a lot of bars and restaurants to walk to and it's a chill spot. It's for up and coming acts and has cheap ticket prices. They also sell alcohol and drinks are moderately priced. read more

I attended Southerleigh's 3rd Birthday Party and Fiesta event here and I was pleasantly surprised about how unannoyed I was. I'll be honest, I lived the 90's-very early 2000's ATX lifestyle of the music and people and living downtown scene during my 20's at a time when ATX was a non hipster millennialish labeled city and my expectation was that this place would be just that and I would be annoyed. They proved me wrong, it was actually people my age (early 40's) that don't look 40's and still have a hipster before it was labeled hipster vibe to them, and tattoos that are older than most kids who go to places like this. Lol. The Texases played this event on the stage and they were freaking great. It was all country music covers from when Clint Black, Randy Travis, George Strait, etc. were at their peak from 90's country. I say all of this in the same breath that this event was a Sunday event, it was in the middle of the later afternoon around 4pm and the crowd was great! I don't know what it's like at night with an actual band or what the crowd is like, but I will definitely be back for Sunday Funday day time drinking and music events because they did great and I loved the atmosphere, layout, people, and vibe. It can get crowded because the space where the stage is located is small and there's only a select amount of picnic tables to sit at. They have more outside seating in the front but you won't be within stage sight if that's important to you. If you are a chic who likes to wear heels, leave those at home for this venue space. It's all outside and it's not heel friendly. I'd wear flats or even wedges or flatforms are fine. Dress Attire: Depends on the event, but for the most part from what I saw in person and what I see on their IG and FB, think indie music festival or indie rock concert. I was there for a Fiesta type event so it was different this time around due to the event. The bar staff was great, the drink specials were hella' fantastic ... $4 a beer for high quality hoppy craft beer, but again it was for an event! The craw-fish from Pinch was on point, and the Paleteria popsicles were delish. I'd like to go back for a "typical" paper tiger night and check it out, but for a Sunday daytime event ... it was so ridiculously great and I'd attend another event there again! Side-note - As a teen in high school in the early 90's I used to hang out here when it was The White Rabbit because the guy I dated was in a band and performed there quite a bit or had friends who performed there too, so I spent a lot of time there and it was nostalgic to be back and alas, made me feel a little old. There were quite a few people here fo the show. There were also some cool vendors that came out. They also have mixed drinks and some good craft beer selections. My drink that I ordered that night was an aunstin Eastsiders pineapple flavor. It brings me back to my childhood when I loved pineapple soda. Had a really hard time selecting a rating for Paper Tiger. Location is great, quality and diversity in shows is great. Drinks are ridiculously priced. $5 for a Lonestar?!!! That's just a little unnecessary. There should always be your staple cheap beer for those who are out but on a budget. I wanted to order more drinks but the $5 Lonestar discouraged me from ordering anything else. I didn't want to spend my whole paycheck. Venue is the perfect size, not too big or small. I personally enjoy smaller shows over ampi-theather/arena shows. Overall, great venue and great shows but I would highly suggest pre-gaming. Unless now you've been warned and can plan your budget around spending buttloads of money on drinks. read more

This was a totally different ambiance for me but so inviting and everybody was so friendly. The place next to Paper Tiger also worked in conjunction with them and sold snacks outside the area. They had picnic tables, chairs, stools and of course 2 bar areas where you could hang out at. We talked with the design artist who was doing the shirts and discuss some work with him. He did some great work while he was there. We went inside and the area looked small from the outside but once inside the place was huge it had a bar with the DJ set up in the middle a huge band stand area and the dance floor. The first band was a romantic band but played so good that the music drew you to them. We than heard Bidi Bidi Banda and she was awesome. Considering this crowd was such a young crowd they all responded well. We had ordered some drinks and they had free items available to go with your drinks so you can't beat that. read more

I liked this place a lot I came here to see my favorite artist Mat Kerekes play and it was great. I like how up close you get to be to the artist and how there are not a crazy amount of people there so you can meet the artist. They have a full bar and an outdoor area too. Inside is pretty small and they sell stuff inside too like band pics etc. the only thing I didn't like is the bands that played before the artist I wanted to see. On the website it told me Mat would be playing at 8 pm but he did not until 10 and I was subjected to garbage bands before that. Seeing my favorite artist however made it all worth it. I got some pics with mat and had a good date night here with my wife. Cool little place and it's right next to a whole lot of other bars which is cool. read more

Better bathrooms than the prior White Rabbit incarnation, and an even steadier stream of great national bands being booked under Margin Walker than under the old Rabbit promotions team, but... Nostalgic me still *really* misses the old grungy CBGB charm of the OLD White Rabbit, though. Paper Tiger almost feels like a thick layer of paint was added just to cover the Rabbit grunge and give the *impression* of upstandingness, but that hardly enough was done to make it *actually* upstanding... it's in limbo, lol That being said, there is still much to love about Paper Tiger... Primarily the quality of bands that are now being booked on a regular basis - especially when those bands play in the intimate little side room off the patio. The sound in that room is great, despite being exceptionally loud (which usually tends to distortion), and since the stage is really only knee-height, you're really right there, up close and personal with bands that you were probably just listening to on the radio hours beforehand. It truly feels like you're seeing this band that you love play a houseparty in your garage...AWESOME!! There is tons of seating outside, and 2 bars out there. Usually the music is loud enough that if the stifiling warmth of the main room becomes too much, you can pull up a bench, beer in hand, and at least listen more comfortably. Sound quality in the main room had been vastly upgraded in the final years as White Rabbit - still good now. Where WR Pizzeria used to be now stands Rumble - a more cocktail-centered bar. Apparently the 2 exist as separate entities now - have some pre-flight drinks at Rumble before a show, but if you show your ticket and enter Paper Tiger, that's it - no ins &outs. Would be awesome to be able to move between the two freely, or visit one of the several food trucks parked out there... But, no...and the door staff at Paper Tiger are pretty jerkish about that. Plenty of street parking for free in the surrounding neighborhoods, and the residents seem cool about it...thanks, y'all! Overall, I don't think twice before purchasing tickets to see a band that I love/kinda like/might dig one day in the future at Paper Tiger. I just have drinks elsewhere beforehand, and cross my fingers that the staff has done something earlier in the day that puts them in their happy place. read more
