Went for a Brat night during fiesta and was very disappointed. Both Djs hired played the same songs over and over (barely played charli xcx) and there was multiple men visibly intoxicated bothering people and one of the staff members was chilling with them instead of doing something about it. They had a live band when we went in, it was kind surf rock. We really enjoyed their sound. We played darts, I got a pear cider on tap which is hard to find where I'm from in California. Honest review-- I went to this bar tonight with a friend who is a regular, immediately upon entering the bar I was identified as "not a regular" and my ID was requested even though I am well over 50 years old. My birthday just passed two weeks ago and it is impossible to get an appointment in Texas to get your license renewed, so my license was two weeks overdue. She said she would not serve me and she would only serve me soda and this was because of TABC rules, I happen to be an attorney and know very much about the TAbC rules and the rules are put in place to ensure that they're not serving minors, now maybe this bar has had those issues before because this bartender said she "has an 18 year-old child and would not take the chance"", my friend suggested I talk to the owner who was wearing a pink shirt and drinking at the bar and I went over and explained my situation to him and showed him my ID --he told me to tell her that it was fine, I went back to the bar and told her what he had said, a5 that point she said she would have to talk to him, she then left and came back and said "he says that you told him I said to talk to him" I explained that no that was not the situation, but by that point I was feeling incredibly incredibly unwanted, even if they would've served me it was clear that outsiders are not welcome in this establishment, it's a tiny hole in the wall and is not really a place. I would ever choose to go to anyway, down the street from there is a way better place called the Elsewhere where everyone is accepted so I left and walked there, don't waste your time. It is amazing how ignorant people are, do they really think TABC can ticket them for serving a 55 year old with an expired license? this is clearly not a business that is run on the up and up and depends on customer service, if you are an insider, you are welcome, but if you are just a normal person, don't go read more

Shady! Don't use a credit card at this place. They swiped mine twice and said one charge was a hold and it would come off at midnight. Never heard of this and didn't believe the bartender but nothing I could do at that point. So as I suspected it was BS. The charge was never removed and I had to call my credit card company and dispute the charges. If you need to steal from your customers to get by your a loser and should throw in the towel now. I have so many great memories here. I met Union Underground here, heard many great bands, and I've headbanged the night away on Metal Mondays. The Mix has a great local neighborhood chill vibe, and the drinks are very reasonable. Bathrooms are a bit scary and look like something out of Saw but hey it's an old dive bar...so I guess part of the charm? The staff has always been friendly and attentive even when stupid busy. They have a cool lounge by the pool tables with a leather sofa that I like to sink into. I was sad to see the little private room in the back with the loungers and TV'S gone. I adored that room for chatting with the interesting people I would meet here in a space that reminded me of my highschool bestie's livingroom. read more

If you're looking for a no-frills kick-ass brew selection mix (pun sort of intended) and match good time, this is an absolutely fabulous place to start. Mix (if you will) one part easygoing and sharp barstaff, a twist of enigmatic if comfortably friendly regulars, shake with a bar band or two, throw a heavy pour in there and you know what I'm talking about. All they're missing are the sleeping bags. I could have forwarded my mail here and been perfectly okay for awhile. Bathed in blue light with a side room full of pool tables, The MIx is just what it purports to be: a mix of friends and soon to be extended family, wrapped in the warm embrace of tonight, surrounded by the possibility of expanding smiles in the offing. I can't in all honesty say that I've spent countless nights here, 'cause that wouldn't be true. But these guys get the best part of what being a neighborhood staple is. I once avoided this place because the cigarette smoke would irritate my eyes to the point where I wasn't able to enjoy the Billy and the Barnburners concert held every Sunday night here at one time. But lo and behold that was almost 2 years ago and the city of S.A. finally enacted a smoking ban and voila, I can breathe and see clearly now! (exhales) I came here once in January to see an art show then again a few days ago to celebrate a friend's birthday. I also saw a coworker here having a beer with his pals. Once upon a time about two or three years ago, the mix was a older establishment with a punk rock feeling to it, where you could sit on old chairs and tables and couches and be content with cheap alcohol. Fast forward to now and you can still get the same alcohol, but in a nicer fresher, more hip atmosphere. Don't worry music still plays here and the same people still show up drinking, just stop boy to enjoy the music, drinks and nightlife on North St. Mary's and of the OG bars. read more

The Mix is the quintessential go to spot on the brutally hip St. Mary's Strip. Where other places come short on the cocktail front The Mix seems to fill that void and your glass before last call. Hipsters swarm this bar like moths, and on any given night you will find bicyclists, beer snobs and radioheads clamoring to get in. It is small and depending on the time of week, can get intensely crowded. There is a bar that serves up cocktails and beers alike that opens up the area by which patrons can play billiards. There are but a few tables and if you don't like standing while drinking may I suggest grabbing the most available table immediately. By the front entrance, as you go in there is an area where bands play without a stage. On any typical night you might have a Norwegian Rockabilly band, the next a metal act where members dress like zombies. It is a place where local and regional alike acts converge, which makes for an interesting drinking experience. And as to not totally exclude smokers, which Austin clubs have done categorically, there is a patio where you can get your nicotine fix. The bar staff is top notch and extremely friendly. They go go from one end of the counter to the other side rather quickly. So you never have to wait too long before someone gets you your order. Which brings me to the price of drinks. It is definitely not cheap here. If your looking to impress your date with a night of drinking on the town you would be better served to go somewhere on the Riverwalk. Just be mindful as you get your drink on, it all adds up rather quickly. In my my observations I would like to suggest this to you as well as them: I. They need to get rid of the billiard tables and replace them with more tables. In the front where the bands play there is not ample room for patrons to view bands. One time I had a guy sit on the same table nonchalantly that I was drinking on also. I don't know about you but if I have spent almost eight bucks for a drink I don't want someones tush resting next to me. More space for tables will alleviate this problem. II. As I have alluded before there are various bands that play here and sometimes they play ridiculously LOUD! My suggestion bring earplugs. Just in case. You won't be seen as a fuddy duddy and your ears will thank you! III. There has to be better beer deals! Period. Other clubs rotate drink deals throughout the week. Or even have a specific drink to tie in a theme. It would behoove them to do this to keep the regulars happy and by bringing in newer patrons. I guess, like all spots and clubs it's all about location, location. But in an area that is growing and becoming more competitive staying relevant and knowing your potential demographic is to your benefit. Do not skip this place just exercise good judgment in regards to your wallet and your overall experience. The Mix is a staple of this city and as such has survived trends and the fickleness of its patrons. And for that I must give credit to where credit is due. The challenge for them will be in seeing the new crop of clubs and bars on The Strip and how it will fit into that paradigm. But then again what other place in town can you go to after a dinner at Benihana's, grab a drink whilst checking out a band in full zombie garb doing Slayer~metal! Not many... read more

They have this chalk board that says "mix and match" or whatever. You get a beer and a shot for $5 which is actually amazing, but when I ordered I didn't realize you had to pick a beer and a shot I thought you could just pick two of any kind. Well instead of being told the total was $5 for two shots or heck even $10 I was told $15.51. Without question I gave the bartender $16 and she only billed $10 and threw a $5 IN HER TIP JAR. Mind you this woman had never served me. I tip 30-50% but she wouldn't know that now that she over charged me to tip herself. Maybe she thought I was drunk and didn't notice, but hell I noticed. Sitting in the corner of a San Antonio bar can sometimes be a religious experience. Especially when you are wearing headphones, and cranking King Dude's, "Lucifer's the Light of the World" at astronomical levels. Luckily, I was there before the live music started, and I could enjoy my whiskey. The local paper boldly expressed love for The Spurs, and my belly was full of Joey's pizza. This is the thing about SA. People aren't afraid to look uncool. People aren't afraid to sit at your table. People aren't afraid to pull up a chair. They aren't afraid to expound about the virtues of all the wrong drugs and sex they have had in their life. The greatest part, and I mean amazing part, is if you show the ability to hold their attention for those brief thirty minutes, you are a friend. You will travel with them, and their friends, and they will introduce you as such. The Mix is this place. It is hard drinks poured by gorgeous punk rock bartenders. It's a patio of cigarette bumming ex-punks, skaters, urban cyclists, and aspiring artists. It's bands that dance louder than their music, and tables filled with locals that assume you are the same. It's what Austin was, and will never be again. It's the true, "late night taco trailer" crowd. On Saturdays, when I look around, at whatever hipster bar I find myself sitting inside. You will see this. I will close my eyes for a brief moment. My mind will slip away. To that corner of the patio, with my earphones blaring blasphemy, and The Mix will be in my prayers. read more

This MIx is kind of the perfect dive bar. I'm giving them five stars because what they do, they do really well. Don't get me wrong, you'd never confuse this place with the Four Seasons. When we stopped in here on Friday night, we immediately felt at home. The bartenders couldn't have been friendlier, the beer selection was great, and the crowd was an eclectic "mix" (pun intended). Everyone seems really laid back and there just have have a good time hanging out with friends. Coming from a non-smoking city, it did kind of make me laugh to see a cigarette vending machine. I LOVE the old-school Ms. Pac Man game and wore my arm out trying to make it to the next level. There is a small patio out front, darts and pool tables. This is where my husband became a fixture while I was away in boot camp and the purgatory that followed (more training). I'd been there before and it was pretty cool but I never really saw what all the hype was about....but the crowd here knows how to get down. Pitchers are so cheap here, there's no way you'll walk out sober....it's just fucking badass. There's live music every night, mostly local acts (good ones). There's also a couple of pool tables. Good luck getting a chance to play, I've seen the same people hogging them up for hours. Ladies, the restrooms are an AT-YOUR-OWN-RISK thing, There's about a 3 inch gap between the doors to the stalls so your business is pretty much everyone else's too. Good place to go on a nice night out. They have a nice, but small patio area, a pool area, and the inside bar with a small stage. It was Ska night apparently, when I went, which I'm not a fan of. But the musicians seemed pretty good; and I'd go back on a non-Ska night. It was very crowded, but the bar staff was pretty on the ball about getting people set up with drinks. However, there were a few things I did not like. Firstly, the women's bathroom has two stalls, and both of them close really strangely. They don't lock, and you sorta have to push them forward (into the bathroom stall), to open them, or pull them out. Either way, there's a good chance you'll flash someone, or hit someone in the head. 50/50 chance here. (My friend did the second and almost got in a fight.) Secondly, the music is super loud, so you'll need to go outside if you came here to not listen to the music. :-P Third, if you are paying with a card, they charge you $1.00. I really hate when bars do this, because it's just...crappy. I'm here to buy your drinks, but you're gonna charge me an extra $1 to do that? So if all I buy is a $3 beer, I'm paying $4. Great neighborhood pub! This is a local hangout, with cheap drinks, great specials, and live music! It's a very chill place to hang out with some friends- they've got live music most nights, pool tables, dart boards, and wonderful bartenders! It's not especially the cleanest bar, it takes the dive bar thing seriously. The bathrooms are usually in pretty unclean conditions. But what do you expect from a place like this? It does have a great patio, and the beer is cold, so I couldn't ask for too much more. There's a back room that's a great place to hang out if you're looking for someplace quiet and private to hang out. They usually show the game on television here, and there's always plenty of people to cheer along with you! They offer a great beer selection, and are constantly rotating out the taps to bring new and exciting beers. The beer and mixed drinks are quite reasonably priced, but I suggest going with the pitcher deal any day of the week. If you don't dig the vibe here, there's always Joey's next door, or the White Rabbit across the street. You'll find something you like around here, I promise! read more

I'm not really sure when this place changed from a college bar to rockabilly bar but I think it's great. the drinks aren't crazy cheap but it's resonable. the bands that they bring are all locals and most of it is pretty great. the bar can get pretty packed but they have this great patio area. the bar can also get a bit packed with smoke so I would recommend some patio use and I'm a smoker. it's a great bar that I think all San Antonio locals and visiting friends should check out. read more

Am I a hipster? I mean, I consider myself a foodie, love farmer's markets, micro-brews and am currently in the market for bicycle. I have no idea the criteria for hipsterism but if frequenting this place qualifies me, then hell yes. Stopped by for a few beers before an event and I instantly felt at home. What's that you say, it's happy hour and Ruby Redbird is on draft for 2.50?! Ahh, I'm home. This is admittedly, a dive bar. Sure, the bathroom doors don't quite close, but I love a place where the regulars range from a guy with a ponytail and tribal tattoos to an older couple who came on bikes. They have a great selection of beer on draft, about 15 different brews ranging from the usual like Miller and Guiness to beers straight outta Alaska. Definitely going to come again for the Happy Hour and maybe stick around for the any of the large list of bands that play this venue. read more

Great people, decent drink prices (Love Ruby Redbird on draft for $2.50, can't quite qualify spending the same for a PBR), and the atmosphere made me feel right at home. No longer can I complain about having a hard time trying to meet people in San Antonio! Everyone at the bar was welcoming and we spent the evening on the porch chatting, evading the Spurs game crowd. Once the game wrapped up, the music started and I've never felt more comfortable. The dive bar aesthetic makes it feel like every bar I miss from the other cities I lived, but maintains a sense of individualism. There is a crowd that clearly comes there often and they lack the pretentiousness and superiority complex that I've come across at other places. Instead, everyone seemed to be happy to mingle together. Almost immediately upon entering we were asked to share a table. This is what I've been looking for, what I've needed. While 'The Mix' is not what would readily come to mind when I think of 'my scene', I still appreciated the genuineness, laid-back vibe, loud music, and overabundance of black clothing. I guess I was in that kind of mood. My group of former frat boys and sorority girls were a bit more... apprehensive. I don't like to give five stars a lot, but the more I though about it, the more this place deserved it! We went there last Thursday night to see a new co-workers' band, Muscle Car. First off, I loved the atmosphere and the location of the bar (right next to Joey's) right away, but one thing I was not expecting, was the feel inside. I have never seen such an array of people in one establishment in San Antonio. There were hippies, goths, hipsters, a dude with a bike and my favorite, a thor look alike throwing darts. He was dancing, flipping darts, and had a great air guitar solo at one point! There is quick bar service, which is always good. Area to sit and watch the live music, pool tables, darts and a room in the back that has a green room feel full of couches. It was where we went after the band to talk and catch up with friends. It was fun. There were $5 Moscow Mules, which were amazing. The whole place overall was a ton of fun and great to see in San Antonio! Pop in, and if you don't like it, hey you are right on N. St. Mary's! You will find something to your liking. read more

You have to there early to get good seats, parking is kind hard to find, the highlight of the night was Shiner Cheers, great beer. The Mix is one of those places that you can never take away from San Antonio. I've been going here on and off since I hit legal drinking age. Sometimes you can catch some really great bands here. The atmosphere is always chilled, imagine hanging out at your bestie's garage who happens to own pool tables, a stage, beer on tap, & a liquor license. That's what the Mix reminds me of. It's worth making the stop along the St. Mary's strip. It's even better if you know the band playing there. They have plenty of beer selections, which makes me happy. Decent shot prices and a friendly staff that will keep you coming back for more. read more

Probably my 2nd favorite late night bar spot in SA, The Mix is just that- a mix of everyone, young and old, hip and square, punk and rockabilly. Just let me toss those cliches and stereotypes in a blender and hit puree, for, like the excellent strong cocktails, there is definitely something unique in The Mix. I love the atmosphere, the drinks, the friendly environment and the area, for sure. My favorite thing about this bar, though, is that you never know what to expect music wise. A few visits back we heard a throwback to the days of Buddy Holly and it was bliss. We boogied some, fo' sho'. The last time was an equally awesome cover band playing everything from The Jackson Five to 80s New Wave and it was all GOOD.
