I have been shopping at Paper Source for a few years now. The customer service from the employees is outstanding. There are always pleasant and helpful when I am having a brain fart with designing invitations. I usually bring my daughter in with me and she is always allowed to try out the new markers and/or stampers. The only thing i dont like is the prices sometimes they can be very pricey. I usually pretty addicted to stationary stores and spend a good amount of money on their fine trinkets. However, after having a snooty guy behind the counter when I popped in on a Thursday morning, I was less than encouraged to spend my money. I get that it's morning and you apparently don't really care for your job, but being kind to customers helps you make sales. I ended up leaving without getting a single thing, in spite of shopping for one of my clients. They have nice things, but until they work on their customer service they won't be taking my money (or my clients). read more

Paper Source is one of those stores that sucks me in and takes all of my money. I'm like a magpie drawn to shiny things when I go in here. The back paper room is enough to keep me entertained for a good 20 minutes. I walk past each shelf and think of all the awesome cards that I could create with Paper Source and the help of my Gocco machine. The best part is that the staff is cool. They don't seem to mind my wandering and ogling of papers, rubber stamps, and books about needling felting. In fact, they seem to encourage it. It works because I love to buy stuff at Paper Source. This is a great place to get really neat wrapping paper or boxes for presents, ink stamps for decoration, ribbon, twine, washi tape, and other ornaments for preparing cards and gifts. There's a cute selection of crafty toys if you're trying to interest kids. There is a decent selection of cards (far better than a drugstore card aisle in terms of quality) although it's clear the focus is on gift-wrapping. If you're looking for something really eclectic, bizarre, or vintage (a random postcard depicting the birds of Africa, for one example) perhaps visit Twosided instead. If your focus is on crafting, though, and you're looking for the tools to create a really nice-looking present or card, Paper Source ROCKS. If you're looking for creative ideas, or just trying to track down the right color/size/weight of paper, this is the store. I'm not an art student, but I was on the hunt for enough paper to make about 300 invitations. This idea to make square red paper invites with a diamond velum print overlay, white insert, and double happiness stamp became a reality with the wonderful help of the staff at THIS Paper Source. Oh yeah, they had the envelopes and everything else I needed, plus they cut the paper for me for a small fee (considering the amount of paper I needed cut). It's a shop I would love to still love after all these years, but... It's still got merchandise from 3 years ago sitting around and the prices are a bit high, but it's definitely a fun place to dig around for crafty papers and silver brads and handheld punches, photo archival supplies, etc. - the store itself is very cool upstairs and they have some classes for those of you needing direction. I would like to see more recycled paper products offered, but I really haven't found anything here the last 6 times I've stopped in, that I just can't create without. Also, the custom rubber stamp orders really shouldn't take 4+ weeks, so I'm assuming they're not using local in that department. Still a fun shop overall. read more

Hi - I'm getting married in a few weeks and well, I feel like my finance and I visit this Paper Source about once a week. We made our own save the date cards, then we made the wedding invitations, and we are in the process of making the programs, menu cards, thank you cards, and place cards. The staff at this location is very friendly and helpful. I've learned a lot - I now know how to heat emboss. On the second floor, the person helping can bring out a big box of stamps, embossing powder, and ink pads so you can figure out what looks best. I am pretty sure that I will look back upon this time and remember all the time my finance and I spent at Paper Source as well as putting together all these items. As I like to say to my fiance, she is very crafty! Prices are not rock bottom, but we still saved a tremendous amount of money. We've spent enough time here now that I recognize most of the staff. Fortunately they don't seem yet to recognize us. We just got back from the semi-annual Paper Source warehouse sale. WOAH. I have no idea what a lot of these gals (overwhelming gals at the sale) are going to do with all those boxes of envelopes and paper, but the prices were outstanding. Next time we are going to go early and have a plan of action - or at least a project in mind. Some people not only had boxes of stuff, but I saw a woman with a cart full of boxes of stuff. I'm not sure if she was going to sell the stuff on ebay or she has a business of producing invitations, but that was just a lot of stuff. Paper is sold by the box or inch. read more

I've been here a few times, since I live really close, and I've always had luck. I'm a graphic designer by trade, but I also got into printmaking/bookbinding and they have mostly everything I need here. It's also become my go-to spot to get last minute gifts and "Thank You" goodies, all thanks to their weird selection of books, baking kits, and other knick-knacks. I'm also reading that other people had bad experiences with the salespeople and lack of customer service, but that's never been the case for me. I personally enjoy space when walking around and looking at stuff, I'll ask for help if needed, but never had to. Basically, for me, It's a good spot to have so close! read more

I'm going to pretend I haven't read about this chain's bad labor practices and just stick to my experience with this store. Started going here as a student at SAIC back in the late 80's/early 90's, and this store was pretty much the first of its kind here. The selection of papers, the excellent and more importantly NON-CUTE selection of rubber stamps, the very respectable level of legitmate book and paper arts instruction--this has always been the place for it. Yes, it's expensive, but no more so than paying shipping on the items carried in-store that you would otherwise have to order. Excellent bookbinding supplies (though the selection could be broadened in terms of linen thread, this is one of the few places with a great selection of serious adhesives). The store carries supplies that cross over various traditions in paper arts, i.e. scrapbooking, bookbinding, altered books, rubberstamping, etc., without being too precious or chintzy-cutesy in selection or presentation. You can find scrapbooky stuff here, but the shop is more like an art supply store. The staff is without fail courteous and respectful. They watch you like a hawk around the rubber stamps, no doubt because the stamps have a way of growing legs and walking out the door, but other than that I've never had an employee breathing down my neck or or trying to sell me anything. It's always been a comfortable, pleasurable visit. I admit I'm partial to this location for sentimental reasons--it's where I bought my first rubber stamp, ever. Aw. read more

Everything in the store is beautiful, except for the customer service. I've been in this store three times and every time I'm thoroughly shocked and disappointed by the quality of service. The staff generally doesn't even acknowledge a customer's presence in the store until they're up at the cash register. And if a customer asks a question, you can be sure to be given a terse, cold suggestion to "go to the back of the store" or "check upstairs." Thankfully, all of the products are available online, and these store clerks are basically unnecessary. I'll spend my time shopping online so the clerks can spend more time doing whatever it is they do while not helping customers. read more

I could get lost in paper source for hours. I think this location is especially fun because it is in an old 3-flat so walking up to each level brings new surprises. My sister was a print and bookmaking major in college and she was very impressed with the selection of supplies. They have a massive selection of cardstock and matching envelopes in all shapes and sizes and I adore ALL the ribbon on the 3rd floor. I buy a few yards each time I am there. read more

After an order I thought I placed apparently never went through (my internet connection's fault - not theirs), I spoke with someone on the phone who was super nice and reassuring. I told her I'd re-order the envelopes (for my wedding invitations) but that I really was hoping to have them by Thursday so I guessed I'd pay for 2 day shipping. The gal I spoke with said she'd keep an eye out. Well, she must've because the order was filled and out to UPS within 3 hours and my 2 day shipping ended up arriving the next day. Less than 24 hours after placing the order online, it was at my house. Now I know that Chicago to Southern Wisconsin isn't terribly far, but it was still excellent customer service. read more

One of the best art/crafts stores in Chicago. Although I don't consider myself a craft artist I do occasionally purchase random items for gifts. The 8x11 paper there is fantastic for resumes. I've been going to this store ever since I moved here from Iceland. I've never had a problem. read more

Super cute store with super cute stuff! The sales staff is super helpful too. I bought super cute octopus stickers and the paper to print my wedding programs and was really happy with the way they turned out. (Don't worry, I didn't put the octopus stickers on the programs...) Their products are very high quality and the prices reflect that. The only disappointing thing was their invitation selection, they were all nice but very basic. I can't remember not going to the Paper Source. Their selection and service [especially those in the back] is outstanding. They never try to hurry you through the store [even though it can get quite busy, especially around bridal season and the holidays] and are always courteous and accommodating. I think the middle of the first floor is getting a little too heavy with retail product, but I can understand them wanting a mix, but sometimes I feel like the fixtures are barricades to the paper and envelopes in the back. Don't forget to explore all of the floors and definitely sign up for their emails. You'll learn about new products and sales, including their once-a-year warehouse sale. They have great ideas for invites as well, wrapping paper that can be used in a variety of projects, great stamps, scrapbooking supplies and more. One of our favorite things to do in Chicago! THIS is their biggest Chicago location so make it a point to take a few extra minutes to go to this one instead of the others. Paper, scrapbooking, stamping, cards, books, Paper Source has it all. This is the place to go for little gifts and things that people can't figure out where in the world you found something that cute! The cards are fabulous. I love paper! I love writing letters(granted I usually get emailed responses but it doesnt stop me!) and I love making my own cards. They have an awesome selction of card stock in many sizes and fantastic colors! A great selection of small decorative bits that just make me a little crazy! I like the little gift corners and note books. The selection of special japanese papers are beautiful and even just the choice of wrapping paper is really nice. I go to Paper Source whenever I need nice paper for cards and usually have a hard time making a decision. I nearly have mild anxiety attacks due to too many choices. I also love their choices for scrapbook paper that I use for differents crafts other than scrapbooking. They dont have an immense selection like Joanns or Michaels but what they do have has a more refined quality.(Don't get me wrong, I love both stores mentioned) I found a gift for a friend and papers for my holiday card making and even though the plastic sheets w/ snowflakes screened on were 3.50 a sheet I don't care since the cards I used them on look amazing! read more

I was in and out within 20 minutes and felt very secure that I had all i needed to get the job done. She also took the time to show me how they have a program on their web site for label making. You buy the labels and input all the address in the on-line form and poof....they're done and formatted! That was very cool of her to show me how to do that! read more

Paper Source is the way to get your creative juices flowing. I am always inspired when stepping inside. The prices are high, I will admit, but the stock is unique and worth it in most cases. This is a total chain. I mean, it IS a chain, so that's no surprise, but some chains are just better at shirking the chain store feeling than others. I was profoundly underwhelmed by this shop. Everything is set up in little groupings, spoon-feeding the customer what to purchase for any particular occasion. Mother's Day! Graduation! Kid's Birthdays! They each have their own little station with "appropriate" gifts and suggestions. Yawn! I went to the shop looking for personal stationery and was, frankly, completely bored with their selection. Lots of pastels, uninspired letterpress and other boring items litter the shelves. If you're actually looking for a unique writing paper, go to Greer or Paper Boy. If you have no idea what to get your mother or father or someone else for a holiday gift and they're of the crafty variety, this might be the store for you; they're happy to fill in that creative blank with something utterly forgettable. read more
