I've been ordering online from Steel Petal Press for years. When we parked nearby on Saturday heading to a coffee shop, I was excited to finally pop into the store. It was everything I hoped and dreamed for. Browsing the cards, stickers, journals and more in person was so much fun. Everywhere I looked I found more things that I wanted to buy for friends (or myself!). I love the humor in their store-made goods, and stocked up for the holidays and some upcoming special occasions. The store is brimming with creative, hilarious gifts and stationery. And supporting a local, woman-owned business is one of my favorite things to do. They also carry other brands made by local Chicago artists and other independent designers across the country. The selection is quite impressive, plenty of unique cards for any and all occasions, and they definitely skew towards the quirky. Beyond cards, there's tons of other great gift items, like socks, books, desk plates, adult coloring books, home goods, journals, stationery, and lots of Chicago-centric items. You can find a cool gift for pretty much anyone, especially if they have a good sense of humor. And of course they do custom wedding invitations! I love this store! I was early for meeting friends at Revolution (up the street) so I decided to pop in here and look around. I was most impressed. I LOVE stationary. I'm a teacher so my life revolves around the fresh start of school years each fall, complete with new paper, pens, pencils, markers... all things I absolutely adore. Steel Petal has all kinds of cards (for all occasions), paper, blank stationary, and even custom stationary (paper, envelopes, invitations, etc.). They also have a bunch of keychains, tchotchkes , and other fun stuff available for purchase. I bought a fun Chicago keychain that looks like an old motel key ring. Shopping local is obviously also awesome, especially when you can find whimsical and personalized stationary for sending your friends and family little notes. They take specialty orders if you need invitations or other stationary for your business or something. Very cool and I'll definitely be back. read more

I love this shop. It has the most whimsical, fun things... everything from cheeky socks to statement barware. And of course the stationery. I always come here for cards and gifts that will make my friends smile. Finally, I super love this shop because my dogs love it here! We've started going back, making it a part of our regular walks, since Chicago reopened and they get so excited! The staff is always so nice to them, as are the other customers, that they start crying of excitement when we walk in the door. So glad this neighborhood gem is back and better than ever. read more

Cards are one of my favorite things, and walking into Steel Petal Press felt a little bit like entering heaven. There are SO. MANY. CARDS! And their selection covers every occasion: wedding, love, anniversary, father's day, mother's day, birthday, thank you, and sympathy. There's also the perfect mix of funny and cute. I got a couple of Star Wars themed cards for my dad and pretty, scripture ones for my friends. But best of all? It's a local business. At least half the cards are their own brand, and they're printed right here in Chicago. Steel Petal Press is a wonderful place to check out in the Logan Square area. This shop probably has the largest, or one of the largest selections of unique cards within a mile radius. Many of the greeting cards are created by people living in the Chicago area. The cards are unique, and they sell cards for basically every occasion. I even saw a card that was congratulating someone for winning the fight against cancer, which is not something I've seen at other stores. This store also provides custom printing services for items like wedding invitations. Along with fabulous cards, this store also has cool gifts like quirky books, pineapple cocktail cups, and other small gifts. read more

What a great little gift shop. I've seen similar products in other gift shops around the country but that didn't make me like the selection any less. They had Chicago themed things, dog themed, cooking, beer, wine and the list goes on. They even had pineapple things! Shayna was great with him, extremely patient and easy to work with. When the final design was approved, Shayna worked her magic and they seemed to be at our door the next day! I have never had letterpress invitations made before and they are great! Take the extra step and have your return address printed as well. Steel Petal Press did a fantastic job with our wedding invitations. Shayna did a great job walking me through the process, explaining options to me, and handling details. She was receptive to my input (I'm a designer as well) but really made everything happen, delivering a lovely, integrated invitation envelopes liners & belly bands without requiring too much direction. She was clear with the invoices, on-time, kept me updated, and helped drive the process of getting the invites to us on time and on budget. And when I asked "Can I have rounded corners?" she said "yes, but at this point [late in the process] it will cost $x", and I was able to make an informed judgment. Prices are par for the course for letterpress, which is intrinsically a fairly labor-intensive and thus expensive printing process. Quality of the letterpress was excellent. 2016 Update: SPP has expanded their offerings with their new retail store in the heart of Logan Square. They still do a great job at handmade letterpress items, primarily greeting cards, but also wedding invitations, posters, coasters, etc. They also design custom coffee mugs, shot glasses, really cool gift wrapping paper, custom stamps, and more. But with the new retail store they now carry stuff not made by SPP - tons of fun, hip, and unusual gift items for all ages. Lots of witty and edgy cards, ninja blocks for young children, brass pineapple cups for adult drinks, funky socks for all ages. It's kinda like other gift and stationary shops, but has more fun, unusual, and nicer items. I highly recommend it !! 2012 review below: Steel Petal Press provided amazing and unique business cards easily and quickly. The process was simple - like all business cards, Shayna asked what i wanted on them, and if i had any ideas on how i wanted it to look. I wanted to keep it simple, just showing name, what i do, phone and website - no need for address or any thing else company cards typically have. I mentioned a few other ideas but was open to her thoughts. She said explored design concepts and came back with 6 versions of the cards in pdf. I was immediately excited about 2 of them and also liked some of the ideas from the other ones. I explained what i like and why, she talked about what she did and why and what things work well. For example, i like blind emboss, which is when you press on the paper without ink. I liked having my name in very large font across the card in this style because it allows me to get away with having my name take over the card but since there is no ink it made it more subtle, less in your face. We also talked about edge painting, which she noted requires thicker paper and is a little more expensive, but will definitely make the card more unique. From there she did another round of cards and made recommendations and explained why, I picked 2 again that i loved, and she recommended one and we went to print. I let her know that i needed these cards in very short timeline, and she said she could accommodate my request. They arrived in beautiful packaging, cards wrapped in tissue paper with her logo sticker on it, inside a clear plastic container. I couldn't be happier. I whole-heartedly recommend Steel Petal Press to anyone looking for unique or special cards. read more

My love for letterpress and printmaking brought me into Steel Petal Press - I've been in before, but this time around the age of Covid, they took extra meaningful precautions to keep everyone safe - Only allowing so many in at a time, and if you touch anything, they ask to place it in a basket for them to sanitize before setting back out onto the floor. One thing that librarians and designers have in common: Attention to detail! Shayna did a wonderful job printing my business cards and I am really excited to start handing them out. We used a drawing I created and she conceptualized a unique layout and shape (square!). She also came up with a number of designs for me to initially choose from while working with my drawing, worked with me to find the right color of paper and ink, and I was happy with how quickly she had them printed. So I'm really not a fan of Yelp, but I decided that I needed to create an account and share my experience with Steel Petal Press. Sometime last week I stopped by to get a gift for my girlfriend and me being a guy, I didn't have the foggiest idea of what to get her, but I was assisted by a young lady whose name was Marge. Let me tell you, she was an absolute delight! She gave me excellent customer service and helped me find just the right thing.
