It's been a while since I've been here. Pre pandemic I believe. Prices are still fairly reasonable but the once complimentary broth are now $2 and up. There's no paper menu and you order off an iPad type tablet. Average price for a dinner combo is $25. It's your protein, plate of vegetables, rice and dipping sauce. The default broth would be the water and seaweed. It's still a good value if you're not looking for all you can eat. The 10 oz of meat was just fine for me and I left full but not stuffed.

Happy New Years Everyone: We started the New Year by eating healthy at one of our favorite shabu restaurant Paper Pot Shabu. We got there at 12:30 on January 1st. It was busy as usual. We waited 10 minutes to be seated. I ordered the curry broth with tofu/mushrooms platter and my wife ordered the chicken broth with 6 oz. of chicken. We skipped rice. Everything was delicious and fresh. DJ's rating: 4.80/5.00 Would I come back? Definitely Yes.

What drew me in was the use of paper for their shabu pot. I have never seen any other shabu place use this method. I thought it was a cool experience. It didn't change how the soup tasted or food boiled but it was a unique and interesting concept that I liked. The servers were super nice and attentive. The one thing that did bother me though was their rule that a party of two isn't allowed to sit at tables meant for four on the weekends. I came on a Sunday night so it wasn't busy. There were a lot of empty tables of four but none available for the sections of two. No one was ahead of our group but they still made us wait because of that rule. We sat there and waited as more parties of four came and filled the restaurant. Even with more parties coming in, there were empty tables we could've been seated in earlier. As time passed and no other parties were coming, they finally sat us... at a table of four. I think this rule would be okay if the restaurant was busy, but having an empty restaurant and making your customer wait for no reason is ridiculous. We both ordered the American Wagyu 6 oz. It came with a very small portion. It was basically 6 slices of meat which is expensive for its price point. I got the spicy pork broth. It wasn't as spicy as I hope it was. I wish there were spice levels. However, I liked how they will refill your soup base with the soup itself and not a generic stock base. The vegetable platter was decent though. I liked how it came with udon and vermicelli, as well as, bok choy and napa. Overall, I am glad I didn't come hungry because their portions would leave me wanting more and at the price point of almost $40 after tip they should give you more. The location of this building was also strange. You have to go inside an abandoned office building-like structure and up the stairs to see it.

This cute restaurant has great food! There's plenty of parking available around the complex it's in. There are large fans/hoods over each table to combat the heat but it can get a bit warm/stifling in the restaurant. It's called hot pot for a reason! You order from a tablet. Not to worry - your waiter will walk you through how to use and explain the different options. They will also go over your order at the end to make sure everything is correct. The broth is poured into a cute basket lined with paper that's placed on your individual induction stove. The house spicy broth was not too spicy. You have a good variety of meat to choose from, as well as your sides. I got the beef toro - which was nice and fatty. Yum! The service is wonderful. We asked if the waiter could take a photo of our group and he was kind enough to tell us he would take several photos and counted down each time.

Came here on a Friday night around 7:30pm with no wait for three people. Haven't been here in a while but they have a new iPad system to order. You put in your order on a tablet and return it to your waiter. Some notable changes in the menu includes hella extra charges for items that would previously not be extra. For example, it was $2 extra for miso pork broth and $1 extra brown rice (which they were out of). Also their meat is quite pricey but pretty good quality. Something I found interesting was their prime ribeye 10oz was $41 vs 10 oz American wagyu $33. Veggie options includes: regular, low carb, and WOW (costs extra). I ordered the miso pork broth with 10oz American Wagyu and Low Carb Veggie Plate. I love the broth here because it's so yummy and clean. The beef was great and I couldn't even finish it. As for the veggie plate, the difference between the low carb and regular is the low carb includes kale and more veggies while the regular one includes udon and glass noodles. I'm glad they had this option as I was on a low carb diet. All combos come with rice. Another thing I love about this place is that when you ask for more soup they add the same original broth you ordered, not a plain broth. As for the service, the servers didn't come by often to check up on us so we had to call them over whenever we needed something but that wasn't a problem as both servers were extremely kind and attentive with the customers. Side note: My parents apparently met the owners a couple years ago at the Costco Business Center and saw them purchasing meat from there. Overall I give this place 4/5 stars because the food is delicious but was taken aback by the extra charges.

I enjoy paper pot shabu. Their spicy pork bone broth has so much flavor! It had so much flavor that my boyfriend kept dipping his lamb into my paper pot shabu! Talk about annoying. I'm JK. I didn't mind. I knew that my broth tasted better haha. The parking is not bad. I can usually find parking. The service is a tad bit slow and you have to wave down the servers but I didn't mind. The restaurant is good for small and large groups. If you have 5 or more people in your party, then you can call ahead and make a reservation. They serve alcohol. I would definitely revisit!

FYI- If you're looking to share a pot with someone then you're at the wrong place. You will be forced to pick your own broth and protein or you won't be able to order. My friends and I decided to check out Paper Pot Shabu since we wanted to try something new other than Boiling Point or Jazz Cat. Upon arrival, the hostess told my friends and I that we had to sit separately. We were a party of 8 and there was literally just one table dining in so I'm not sure why we had to split up. We noticed the big tables in the back so, then she escorted us to that table. We were told we had to pick a broth/protein in order to get veggies/rice with our meal. My sister and her boyfriend usually share a pot together so, it caught me off guard why this a was requirement as to everyone having to order their own pot. Next time they should be clear on that because that def dampened my dining experience. First with telling us to split tables when there was barely anyone in there and now this. To order your food, you have to order through their ipad which is where their menu is at and add your items. It took forever to order because there was just 1 ipad per table. I also found it inconsistent as we added items and items were disappearing after the fact. Besides the service being not that great, the food saved the day. I decided to get the spicy pork broth with 6 oz of the toro which was enough to get me filled up. The broth was very flavorful and the meat portions were enough to fill me up and the quality of the meat was good. I wish there was a refill on the veggies though like other shabu places. Overall, the food was its saving grace, but the service needs some work. I would have given it 3 stars but the food bumped up my rating. I would have given it 5 stars if the service was better.

It's not as good as it once was, not sure exactly what's changed. The service wasn't good, that's for sure. We had to wave the server over several times. This place used to get so busy and it isn't anymore. Something has definitely changed and I'm not sure we'll be coming back.

Paper Pot Shabu is located on the second floor of Golden Springs Plaza. Parking is convenient and there's plenty of spaces available in the strip mall. Like any other shabu restaurant, you get to choose your broth and meat (6oz or 10oz) from a list of options. I always judge a shabu restaurant based on their sukiyaki broth and I must say Paper Pot Shabu's version of it was very delicious. It wasn't too sweet and it wasn't too salty. Their veggie plate *no free refills* offers a good variety: cabbage, bok choy, pumpkin, tofu, broccoli, corn, and carrot. I also loved that they gave 2 different types of noodles - udon and vermicelli. While the food itself was good, the service was, unfortunately, very lackluster. It took almost 30+ min for our broth to come out, another 10 minutes for veggies to come out, and then another 15 min for our meat to come out; totaling almost close to an hour before we were able to start eating. The restaurant wasn't busy at all (only 2 other tables being served at the time) and it would have been nice for the servers to have let us know beforehand as opposed to me constantly flagging them down. Apparently, the chef was unavailable and there was no one in the kitchen to prep ingredients which is why it took so long (they had to wait until he came back). Kinda odd they only had 1 person in the kitchen to prep everything. Nevertheless, I'd probably give them another shot given the food was good. I'm pretty sure the issue with the kitchen staff was just one of those "off" days.

Overall pretty solid shabu spot. My friends and I came here on Christmas Day for lunch so it was very empty. I believe there was only one guy attending everyone but fortunately not too many people so that was chill. One thing we found very inconvenient is that the menu is on an iPad and it's difficult to understand and get by. But once you get the hang of it, it's easy. For perspective it took us ten minutes to order. For broth I got the house spicy and it's not spicy (I have a very high spice tolerance) so I did add more chili powder on the side. My friends enjoyed the tomato and sukiyaki broths. We all got American chuck, so the meat was on the more leaner side of things. Because we got lunch specials, we got free veggie plates but apparently that's an additional cost for dinner time. White rice is included but brown rice is an extra $3. Everyone has their individual hot pot mini stove so that's nice to control if you want to cook your food at a certain speed. Everything tasted delicious. I would certainly come back with other friends.

i used to come here all the time when i used to live in walnut/db and i'm glad that its still around cus it's just as good as i remember it i brought my bf here for his first time and he was so wowed by the concept of a paper pot shabu. he told all his friends and now they wanna come check it out xD we ordered the house spicy and spicy pork broth the prime rib eye and kobe chuck - both meats were extremely tender and delicious, marbling was great and perfect uniform slices i love that they give u the option to pick what kind of veggie plate you want, we both opted for the no carbs, more veg plates and it was the perfect amount for us service was great, our server was fast and attentive. helpful n informative cus we didn't know how to order off their tablet LOL def wanna try their kobe w cheese next time cus that looks fireeee

The AYCE meats and appetizers were solid, and both broths we tried were flavorful. The spicy miso had a nice kick while the mushroom broth was delicious and comforting. When you walk in, it's super open and spacious, and honestly for an all-you-can-eat spot, the pricing is SO good. The best part? It's usually never packed and we never wait. Every five minutes (not exaggerating), the servers were checking in asking if we wanted to order more meat. I felt seen. I felt supported. I felt encouraged to eat more. And the best part? They refilled our tom yum & tomato soup, with the exact same soil base! Usually other hotpot spots would refill their normal bone broth, but they literally filled tom yum & tomato, which was amazing There are PLENTY of tables and so many protein options: Vegetarians? Covered -- all kinds of tofu. Seafood lovers? Shrimp, fish, mussels, clams. Meat lovers? You already know. Noodle section + veggie bar (which we bravely avoided to save room for meat). Unlimited rice. And the sauce station? Elite. Hubby and I are very saucy people, and the make-your-own sauce bar is dangerous in the best way. So many ingredients to mix and match -- it's basically a personality test in condiment form. As of February 2026 pricing: * $30.99 cash * $32.23 with card (3% surcharge) * Kids under 40 inches = FREE * 40-50 inches = about $13.99 And the cherry on top? Complimentary ice cream. With refills. I also sampled some items from the Option B tier and thought the youth lamb was quite tasty, although the ribeye ended up being a bit too dry for my liking. I appreciated the self-serve format because it allowed me to customize my meal with a decent variety of vegetables and appetizers like chicken wings, egg rolls, and seaweed salad, all topped off with their included drinks and a sweet jelly for dessert. While I enjoyed the meal and the birthday discount, I believe the management needs to address these safety and cleanliness issues to truly match the quality of their premium meat offerings.

Very pleasant experience…read more Went on a Friday around 6:30 PM. When you walk in, the first thing you see is a waitlist where you write down your name and number. The young woman working immediately acknowledged us before we even finished writing our info down and asked how many were in our party. We said two, and she told us to go ahead and start building our bowls. The concept is pretty cool and very straightforward. You grab a bowl and tongs, then walk through the different sections choosing your ingredients. They had a good variety of veggies, noodles, meats, seafood, tofu, etc. Pricing is by weight at $15.99/lb. Once you finish building your bowl, you head to the cashier where they weigh it and you choose your broth and spice level. The broth selection was surprisingly huge, around 15 options if I remember correctly. I got the Tom Yum broth mild spice, and my girlfriend got the Organic Miso mild spice. We also added jasmine green tea and white rice for $1.99 each. After ordering, they give you a table number and you can head over to the self-serve sauce station while your food is being prepared. The sauce bar had ponzu, sesame oil, soy sauce, sriracha, Tabasco, scallions, cilantro, red onion, satay sauce, shallots, minced garlic, chili powder, chili oil, and more. The soups came out quickly and were served over a live flame at the table, which was a nice touch. Both broths were excellent. Even at mild spice, there was still a pleasant kick. The broth itself had good body and flavor and didn't taste watery at all. Service was also great. The server checked on us consistently, kept drinks refilled, and was attentive without hovering. The restaurant itself is pretty small, maybe around 8 tables, but it felt cozy rather than cramped. Nice interior, comfortable temperature, clean setup, and the vibe was relaxing. They were playing bossa nova versions of 2000s and modern hits which honestly fit the atmosphere perfectly. Definitely a spot I'd come back to. Great value, fun experience, and genuinely good hot pot.

Would recommend the AYCE menu instead, a lot more worth then ordering by the item. The meat here is…read moreactually really delicious and the portions are big. The vegetables come pre packaged and served to you all at once at first and just like most of the other items you can order more if needed. The variety of side/apps are pretty wide from the regular hotpot sides, fries, to seafood boil. Never seen that before. The service was amazing and we were treated really well, we came for my gf's bday on 3/10 and the Filipino lady who was working the floor by herself made our experience a great one.

I see the vision but it's just not being executed correctly…read more Starting with the good: I think this is the only shabu place ive been to that has seafood boil, unique combination and im all for it. Its included in the "ayce" (one order), and it was good The meats are decent quality, they have a lot of soup base to choose from as well as appetizers. Now, the bad: i went on a Saturday night which is prime time, they only had one server working which meant slow service. Not the server's fault because she was nice and doing her best but come on, hiring an extra body isnt going to break the bank. She was running all over the place. They advertise this as ayce but its really not. You can only order 3 rounds of meat. This is a classic bait and switch tactic. Its 2026, get rid of this and be honest with your customers and in the long run itll benefit you

The broths are rich and flavorful, the ingredients are fresh, and there are so many options to build the perfect hot pot every time. Whether we're craving something spicy and numbing or a more savory, cozy soup base, it never disappoints. The atmosphere makes it even better -- it's the kind of place where you can sit, take your time, and really enjoy the meal with good company. Service is always smooth, and everything comes out quickly. If you're looking for a reliable, comforting hot pot spot that you'll want to visit again and again, Lao Ma Tou is it for us.

Today, my coworkers finally persuaded me to give it a try since the weather is cooler & I feel very silly now. The exterior and interior decor of this place is on point with the bold red and lanterns. It really sets the mood. Service was exceptional during lunch (wasn't too busy). The staff helped change out dirty plates often. Everything was clean. They were helpful in explaining the AYCE menu. The only problem I experienced is how slow the virtual menu was to load and long buffers between each click. At one point it stopped working to reorder so the waitress had to do it manually anyway. We got the half tomato (light spice) and half spicy soup (mild) base and both were really good! I might upgrade to med next time. The meat quality was great, esp the 1 wagyu plate per person that comes with AYCE. Surprisingly the fatty beef was so tender as well. Even the mala beef didn't hurt going in...or out. The bellflower veggie is a must try. Never had this crunchy vegetable before. Love the self serve bar with so many desserts and Chinese chips options.
