Wild this place has been open for almost a decade. I remember still being fresh out of high school and going here with friends who could actually drive. Lots of memories with friends, family, and a lot of people who aren't a part of my life now, either sadly or good riddance wise. It's located on the second floor of the business plaza building. The times that I've gone, there hasn't been too much of an issue finding parking. There's layers of spots around the periphery of the plaza. Sometimes there's a wait, but I've never had to wait for too long, even for their lunch or their dinner hours. Many changes have been made since the last time I've been there I'm sure (of course rising prices due to the capitalist hellscape we live in), but it's still the same. Paper pot shabu. Unique and eye catching. Since its inception, I don't think I've seen any other place do it like this. It's like a metal base that gets heated up, a basket exterior gives the shape to the "bowl" and the paper helps hold all of the soup in. I'm sure that it makes for easier clean up, hopefully. My go to has always been the "Spicy Yaki" broth since it both has a decent king and some sweet umami flavor to it. Nothing spicier than Shin Ramyun noodles if that's a good indicator of heat level. Love the little grinding of the sesame seeds at the start for the sesame sauce. It's crazy that I did that at a shabu shabu place first and not a katsu place. Trendsetters. Not sure if they still have it with the new/digital menu, but my friends and I always got the "WOW" add on for an extra $3 and it comes with sausages, dumplings, ramen, fish and rice cake, and kamaboko. With all of this, the mixed veggies, udon, serving of rice, and your protein, it's quite filling. I usually get lamb or beef. Always filling, good service, solid shabu shabu back when only this place and Jazz Cat were our only options. read more

This restaurant is located upstairs in this plaza. The staircase is inside the building. I came in pretty blind with no expectations since it was a bit on a whim. I got here a bit after when they opened at 5pm on a rainy Saturday. We were the second table to be seated. We were promptly seated and given an AYCE menu which was priced about $36/person for dinner or the option to order a la carte which was a QR code on the table. Special bases were $3 otherwise you just get "nombu" which the waiter told me was just plain water. I got sukiyaki which is a sweeter base. I got the prime chuck, 10oz size. Sauce station is pretty small. The waiter forgot to put out cilantro and soy sauce until later so I had to go back to make more sauce. Garlic is kept in the fridge below. The sesame sauce is liquidy and it poured out so quickly from the container. Green onions and cilantro were fresh. Chili oil was quite spicy. Only one waiter the entire time, even at 6pm when it got busier with 5 other tables. Not sure if it's always one waiter, but I can see service becoming slow if it is. Overall fine. It's been a while since I've been here. Pre pandemic I believe. Prices are still fairly reasonable but the once complimentary broth are now $2 and up. There's no paper menu and you order off an iPad type tablet. Average price for a dinner combo is $25. It's your protein, plate of vegetables, rice and dipping sauce. This hotpot place is very much reminiscent of Jazz cat, however the only difference is that it's in a basket and paper! This place is a STRUGGLE to find lol. It's located inside the plaza so you have to go in and take the elevator up. But this place's food is decently priced for the quality! I think this concept is so unique and it was fun trying it out. I picked the choice ribeye with tomato broth and it was really good! 10 oz. of ribeye for $30, which includes veggies for free. You can upgrade to get more veggies and dumplings for $4 too! Overall for two people, we spent $70 (before tip) but obviously the price depends on the meat you ordered! What drew me in was the use of paper for their shabu pot. I have never seen any other shabu place use this method. I thought it was a cool experience. It didn't change how the soup tasted or food boiled but it was a unique and interesting concept that I liked. The servers were super nice and attentive. The one thing that did bother me though was their rule that a party of two isn't allowed to sit at tables meant for four on the weekends. I came on a Sunday night so it wasn't busy. There were a lot of empty tables of four but none available for the sections of two. No one was ahead of our group but they still made us wait because of that rule. We sat there and waited as more parties of four came and filled the restaurant. Even with more parties coming in, there were empty tables we could've been seated in earlier. As time passed and no other parties were coming, they finally sat us... at a table of four. I think this rule would be okay if the restaurant was busy, but having an empty restaurant and making your customer wait for no reason is ridiculous. We both ordered the American Wagyu 6 oz. It came with a very small portion. It was basically 6 slices of meat which is expensive for its price point. I got the spicy pork broth. It wasn't as spicy as I hope it was. I wish there were spice levels. However, I liked how they will refill your soup base with the soup itself and not a generic stock base. The vegetable platter was decent though. I liked how it came with udon and vermicelli, as well as, bok choy and napa. Overall, I am glad I didn't come hungry because their portions would leave me wanting more and at the price point of almost $40 after tip they should give you more. Not to worry - your waiter will walk you through how to use and explain the different options. They will also go over your order at the end to make sure everything is correct. The broth is poured into a cute basket lined with paper that's placed on your individual induction stove. The house spicy broth was not too spicy. You have a good variety of meat to choose from, as well as your sides. I got the beef toro - which was nice and fatty. Yum! The service is wonderful. Came here on a Friday night around 7:30pm with no wait for three people. Haven't been here in a while but they have a new iPad system to order. You put in your order on a tablet and return it to your waiter. Some notable changes in the menu includes hella extra charges for items that would previously not be extra. For example, it was $2 extra for miso pork broth and $1 extra brown rice (which they were out of). Also their meat is quite pricey but pretty good quality. Something I found interesting was their prime ribeye 10oz was $41 vs 10 oz American wagyu $33. Veggie options includes: regular, low carb, and WOW (costs extra). I ordered the miso pork broth with 10oz American Wagyu and Low Carb Veggie Plate. I love the broth here because it's so yummy and clean. The beef was great and I couldn't even finish it. As for the veggie plate, the difference between the low carb and regular is the low carb includes kale and more veggies while the regular one includes udon and glass noodles. I'm glad they had this option as I was on a low carb diet. All combos come with rice. Another thing I love about this place is that when you ask for more soup they add the same original broth you ordered, not a plain broth. As for the service, the servers didn't come by often to check up on us so we had to call them over whenever we needed something but that wasn't a problem as both servers were extremely kind and attentive with the customers. Side note: My parents apparently met the owners a couple years ago at the Costco Business Center and saw them purchasing meat from there. I enjoy paper pot shabu. Their spicy pork bone broth has so much flavor! It had so much flavor that my boyfriend kept dipping his lamb into my paper pot shabu! Talk about annoying. I'm JK. I didn't mind. I knew that my broth tasted better haha. The parking is not bad. I can usually find parking. The service is a tad bit slow and you have to wave down the servers but I didn't mind. FYI- If you're looking to share a pot with someone then you're at the wrong place. You will be forced to pick your own broth and protein or you won't be able to order. My friends and I decided to check out Paper Pot Shabu since we wanted to try something new other than Boiling Point or Jazz Cat. Upon arrival, the hostess told my friends and I that we had to sit separately. We were a party of 8 and there was literally just one table dining in so I'm not sure why we had to split up. We noticed the big tables in the back so, then she escorted us to that table. We were told we had to pick a broth/protein in order to get veggies/rice with our meal. My sister and her boyfriend usually share a pot together so, it caught me off guard why this a was requirement as to everyone having to order their own pot. Next time they should be clear on that because that def dampened my dining experience. First with telling us to split tables when there was barely anyone in there and now this. To order your food, you have to order through their ipad which is where their menu is at and add your items. It took forever to order because there was just 1 ipad per table. I also found it inconsistent as we added items and items were disappearing after the fact. Besides the service being not that great, the food saved the day. I decided to get the spicy pork broth with 6 oz of the toro which was enough to get me filled up. The broth was very flavorful and the meat portions were enough to fill me up and the quality of the meat was good. I wish there was a refill on the veggies though like other shabu places. I'm not gonna lie, this place has a pretty interesting concept. They use wooden baskets with what looks like construction paper with a coating as the soup pot, hence the name Paper Pot Shabu. Overall pretty solid shabu spot. My friends and I came here on Christmas Day for lunch so it was very empty. I believe there was only one guy attending everyone but fortunately not too many people so that was chill. For perspective it took us ten minutes to order. For broth I got the house spicy and it's not spicy (I have a very high spice tolerance) so I did add more chili powder on the side. Like any other shabu restaurant, you get to choose your broth and meat (6oz or 10oz) from a list of options. I always judge a shabu restaurant based on their sukiyaki broth and I must say Paper Pot Shabu's version of it was very delicious. It wasn't too sweet and it wasn't too salty. Their veggie plate *no free refills* offers a good variety: cabbage, bok choy, pumpkin, tofu, broccoli, corn, and carrot. I also loved that they gave 2 different types of noodles - udon and vermicelli. While the food itself was good, the service was, unfortunately, very lackluster. It took almost 30+ min for our broth to come out, another 10 minutes for veggies to come out, and then another 15 min for our meat to come out; totaling almost close to an hour before we were able to start eating. The restaurant wasn't busy at all (only 2 other tables being served at the time) and it would have been nice for the servers to have let us know beforehand as opposed to me constantly flagging them down. Apparently, the chef was unavailable and there was no one in the kitchen to prep ingredients which is why it took so long (they had to wait until he came back). Wow did this place change my mind about shabu. Im not going to lie I had my doubts about eating shabu from paper? It was really weird to hear about it, but it was so worth it! You get to choose your broths from their selection and everything is ordered through their tablet. We got the wagyu beef and lean cut for our orders during lunch. WOW. Very interesting concept... You literally cook your shabu in a paper pot... which they said won't break because they import special paper from Japan. And I can confirm... the paper did not break haha. My friend and I ordered the 6 oz wagyu which was literally SIX pieces of meat. Can't confirm if each piece was actually 1 oz each but we were both satisfied but not full. Also got it with the more veggie combo and regular combo and the regular one came with six pieces of udon noodles lol and vermicelli. I'm glad I got the veggie combo so I got more Bon Choy and lettuce. I do wish they included a bigger variety of vegetables but meh, it was good enough. It came out to $30 pp pre-tip. The meat and soup base options here are great! We tried the wagyu beef and toro beef (16oz) and it was definitely enough to feel full. The combo also comes with veggie platter and you can choose either with udon or without (there's more veggies if you go with this option). I also like this place because of their ponzu and sesame sauce. Both of these plus garlic and green onion comes free (some other places charge for sauces nowadays). We got the house spicy and spicy pork soup bases and both had a good amount of flavor (I personally preferred spicy pork). I've been before and had tried the tomato soup base but didn't like that one as much. Service was also very attentive and nice - made sure we had enough water and anything else that we needed. Location is a bit hard to find since it's upstairs but once you get upstairs, you'll easily spot it. I have been a long time fan of Paper pot but my most recent visits have really been a disappointment. Pros: - Meat quality is still good and would highly recommend Kobe Black Chuck as the most flavorful. I normally get choice rib eye but these last two times it was not as it was before. They recently changed ownership but the food still tastes great. They need to take down/fix their business hours posted on their door cause they are now closed for a break in between lunch and dinner hours. Their prices have gone up. The sesame sauce is now watered down/less flavorful as before--please bring back the old sesame sauce recipe. They now give customers a tablet to use to look at the menu and to place an order but it's not efficient at all cause there's only one tablet for the entire party to use. First time trying Paper Pot Shabu, as I am usually quite loyal to my tried-and-true shabu shabu restaurants, but I'm so glad that I did. Paper Pot Shabu is located on the second floor of a plaza building that houses other restaurants, offices, and retail shops, and the parking is plentiful. I was surprised that we were seated so quickly, since it was a Saturday, but the restaurant was not very busy. Paperpot Shabu requires its customers to purchase at least one order of protein per each person, so we ended up ordering two servings of American wagyu, which was soft (not frozen) and arranged appealingly in neat rolls. I chose the spicy tonkotsu base and my cousin opted for the sukiyaki base, both of which were served in some sort of waxed, strong paper arranged into the shape of two bowls, which were then placed on top of the electric stovetops. I have never seen anything even remotely similar to this before, so it definitely made my experience eating here memorable. Each of our orders also came with a pretty standard array of cabbage, bok choy, carrots, kabocha squash, tofu, udon noodles, and thin glass noodles. I am a major believer in the magic that condiments can bring to a dish, and I was excited to see that Paper Pot Shabu provides very finely minced garlic, green onions, white onions, and spicy oil (hot drops) to dress up the standard sesame dipping sauce and ponzu (?) dipping sauce. The experience was memorable, the food was delicious, and despite there being only one waitress, the service was attentive and quick. I look forward to my next visit, and find that typing this is making me crave shabu shabu. My only recommendation would be that the employees give a quick tutorial regarding how exactly to use the electric stovetops, as we found them to be a little tricky to work with. read more

I admit it's not the cheapest place to eat at but you can taste the quality of the food here. Updated: the Valentine's Day special was confusing bc it said 12oz Kobe Gold x 2 plates. Which I thought meant 2 plates of the 12oz but it was actually just 1 plate of 12oz meat and another plate of assorted seafood. However the manager was really nice and gave us an extra 6oz of meat. For about $34/person out the door (children 5 and under free yay!), this is a pretty good place that I would return to. The paper pot is simply fun and intriguing to look at throughout the meal. Meat quality is really good, vegetables are fresh, sauces well made, and broth is flavorful. I like having the brown rice option. Pork Broth & House Spicy Broth - both fantastic. The meat and vegetables tastes flavorful and yummier when cooked in the Spicy broth, but the Pork Broth itself tastes better as soup if you enjoy drinking soup. Of the 7 meat on the AYCE menu, listed in order of our favorite: 1. Brisket Beef - quality soft meat 2. Belly Beef - fatty soft meat 3. Lamb - soft & flavorful 4. Bulgogi Beef - soft and salted 5. Lean Beef (did not try) 6. Jidori Chicken (did not try) 7. Spicy Pork Bulgogi (did not try) 4 Star. Service is okay. Not super notable but nothing to complain about. It would be nice if they had additional utensils available for the hot pot. (We got a long spoon and chopsticks each). Some seating area is a little...different. It's a long, long table spit amongst different groups of patrons. 3 Star. Location. On the second floor of the building and was a little confused on how to access the 2nd floor, since there were no signs from the outside on the side entrance. It takes deliberate effort to want to dine here. But their big banner on the stairway helps. Overall, the meal was delish and did not regret dining here though initially we hesitated a couple of times to try this place out. It's fairly on par with Momo paradise, except no complimentary drinks or dessert. If they added a couple of extra compliments, it would be a complete experience. read more

Honestly, the food is delicious but the service is why I would never come back. I used to eat here ALL THE TIME. Although the service was lacking and what others say about the owner is sadly true, the taste of the food was worth it to stay a loyal patron. All that changed when I made a reservation at 6:30PM for a party of 6. When my friend arrived early at 6:20PM (10 mins early), she was told that our table was given away so we'd have to wait 1.5 hours even though we made a reservation. The owner was the one that approved this even though the girl I spoke to told him we had a reservation. WHAT THE HECK!? Okay, cool. We went downstairs for hot pot at a new restaurant and it was delicious. Thanks for introducing us to this new place. Randomly came here after studying at mugs. This is the most reviewed shabu place in diamond bar. Pros: really good quality meat and vegetables. The sauces provided are ponzu and sesame, so adding some garlic to it makes the sauce pretty good. Cons: the service can be improved... there were times when my friend and I needed something and it took a while to catch the attention of the ONLY worker at that restaurant. Another example of the poor service is that I was wondering why it took forever for my pot to boil - turns out the pot wasn't even on. I had assumed it was on earlier because the server had pressed something but I guess she didn't actually turn on the stove correctly. Overall impression: would come back only because the quality of the food is good, but will be more assertive next time because it was very hard to get the attention of the single server. read more

I was pleasantly surprised with this restaurant! It is located in a plaza on the second floor with easy parking. No wait on a Saturday night. Inside ambience was sleek and clean. You order items from the iPad. The combo dishes come with a veggie platter and a bowl of rice. My boyfriend and I got the miso pork base and split the American wagyu combo, lamb shoulder, shrimp balls, and fish tofu. It was a cool concept to have the broth cooked in a paper pot. I was afraid the paper pot would break, but it was sturdy. The veggie variety was generous and came with 4 cubes of tofu. I really enjoyed the wagyu beef. It was so tender. The lamb was pretty meh because it was dry and chewy. The shrimp ball was standard - nothing special. The fish tofu was delicious - had great flavor. I also surprisingly liked both dipping sauces. The white one had a sweet kick to it. The broth was also pretty rich and yummy. Overall, I was satisfied with the meal. read more
