We have always loved the pizza at Papa's, but now we have a new favorite from the menu. Papa's celebrated their 50th anniversary and sold $5 calzones. We've been loyal customers of Papa's for the last few years. The service has always been great and the food good. We've visited during summers, winters, holiday weekends, and everything in between. Unfortunately, our most recent visit left us so disappointed that we won't be returning. Over Labor Day weekend we dined twice--Friday was great, no issues at all. But on Sunday, we arrived at 6:30 pm, ordered nachos, two salads, a burger, and spaghetti. It took an hour just to get our appetizer, and after waiting two hours, I asked to cancel the rest of our food. I was told that I could not. Our server did her best to keep drinks filled, but each time she came back she repeated, "the kitchen said your food will be up soon." She eventually told us the grill was having problems and that none of her tables had received food. When I pointed out that multiple tables seated after us already had their meals, she explained they had ordered pizza. She then delivered the wrong food to us (steaks). It was the table next to us, which arrived about 15 minutes after we did. After this, I asked to speak with a manager. Katie arrived about 20 minutes later, visibly irritated, and immediately defensive. I explained my frustration with the long wait and inconsistent communication. Instead of apologizing or acknowledging the situation, she blamed the holiday weekend began telling us why kitchen process to justify why other tables got their food already. When I said, "Well, it sounds like you just don't care," she told me she wouldn't be spoken to that way and walked off. I later spoke with the owner, who was apologetic and explained they were short three people in the kitchen. I told her that if we had simply been told upfront about the delay, we would have been more understanding. I also shared that Katie's attitude was unacceptable. She replied that "Katie was under a lot of stress". In the end, we were there for over 2 hours and 45 minutes. This entire experience could have been avoided with honest communication and a little kindness. Sadly, we'll be choosing other local restaurants moving forward that value their customers' experience. read more

This is a great restaurant. The food is excellent. The service is unbeatable. The ambiance and setting is incredibly delightful.

Even though the service and atmosphere here is really awesome and had nice lake views, the food seemed to be where they forgot to add value. I went with the perch dinner and unfortunately had to take it back and we also ordered the chicken Parmesan which left to be desired from a professional cook. The salads were a hit! But the wings too were a miss as they were soggy. Skip this one for entres. read more

We've been going to Papa's for decades. They make a fair French dip sandwich, pretty good pizza, and very nice calzones. On our most recent visit, a family member was quite disappointed with the lake perch (soggy crust and possibly undercooked). But the walleye was fine. read more

Too much of anything is bad. They proclaim this as the best pizza in indiana. Further, best prime rib, and best...something else. Um...too much self-acclaim is a red flag. The pizza is a 7.0 out of 10 at best. WAY too much cheese. Who says that? I do, when it totally overwhelms the pizza. It's like extreme hot sauce on wings. Sausage was over baked. Pizza crust was also excessively "heavy". This is a 2 1/2 -star, and that's because service is stellar, and craft selection very good. It's not like I'm coming from a pizza mecca. Florida. It is not a mecca. This is nothing special. I'd like to also say that while craft beer selections are good, prices are outrageous. $9/pint for most beers. Wrong! read more

The food is OVERPRICED and as a French Trained chef know that most of what they are serving is delivered frozen and reheated. Seriously...there is no such thing as calamari strips (beyond sad)!! Calamari does not come in strips! The manager has a HUGE attitude when questioned about authenticity of the food! Papa's simply ordering frozen food and reheating it for their customers, but somehow people are buying into this theory and paying +$18.00 for a frozen burger. I've been to your restaurant 3 times (in 12 years) and each time it was a disaster. So please, don't worry about me coming back...my dog eats better than the food you serve. You can tout the freshness, but it's frozen, reheated and you know it! My god I ordered salmon and it was served ooozing with albumin and 15 boiled/unseasoned carrots that are sold at Aldi. Can you imagine a piece of overcooked salmon and carrots...... no puree/no garnish/no nothing/just salmon and Aldi boiled carrots. I was shocked and thought it was a joke! Don't expect Michelin star from you, but expect some level of "you care." Even the people we were dining with were like...what is THAT??? So please don't tell me that you have high standards. I've read many of your reviews and other than the pizza you food is horrific and your management skills even worse. Maybe your "lifetime" of cooking all over the country hasn't served you well. Don't take a birthday cake with you when eating here. My daughter-in-law made reservations for 10 people as we were going to celebrate my son's birthday. We get seated. The server takes our drink order. Then a manager comes out and informs us that no outside food is allowed. We have eaten here before and taken a cake before with no issue. The manager would not allow us to keep the cake on our table and took it to the kitchen. At the end of our meal, we asked if we could get boxes and cut the cake so we all could take some home since we weren't allowed to have any there. They would not bring the cake out. They gave us boxes and we had to cut the cake on the hood of the car in the parking lot to share it. Not a good experience at all. Do you even have cake on your dessert menu? I couldn't find any. I understand rules change. We didn't know they had. When someone makes reservations perhaps your employee could mention that if your large party is for a celebration that no outside food is allowed. read more

Cozy place in Culver right on Lake Maxinkuckee. We had a pepperoni calzone, served with a side of marinara, The Hawaiian pizza was ok, but the crust was too thick for our liking. The crab cake sandwich is served great remoulade sauce & I had the caprese chicken grill with fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, basil and balsamic reduction. Have had my last meal/pizza here! I had never been treated so rudely by a food service establishment in my life! First off Papa's is so overpriced but we had a family gathering and several people like their pizza. It was a Saturday and we understand they are slow but was told it would be an hour to hour fifteen. When we arrived an hour and twenty we were told by a lady who was suppose to be the manager "we told you it could be up to two hours. "This was not true as I placed the order. Then she said it will be another 30 just sit over there and wait! Well I don't know about you I was spending over $100 on pizzas could have been treated a bit more professional! Ordered their "famous" cheesburger medium. What I got after an hour wait was an unedible burger on a dry over cooked bun with only one slice of cold chedder cheese with a side order of cold onion rings. Waste of my time after driving for 30 minutes to get there. Server was great, drinks great and appetizers great. Been going there at least once every other week for about a year, never had issues until today. Not sure if there is a kitchen issue or what. Asked for manager, got someone who didnt seen to care or bothered to even apologize, got "so not cooked to your request, we will take off the bill" with a touch of attitude. I ordered the Prime Rib, a featured specialty of the house. I ordered the 10 oz, cooked medium. The order arrived and half of the cut was fat and grizzle, and the other half was well done. I shared my disappointment with my server, who apologized and said she'd inform the kitchen. When I got my bill no manner of recompense was made. One of the few chances I've gotten to eat in Culver, but I'd say it's pretty good for a lazy weekend with a view over the lake. Their pizza was super yummy, and large went a long way. Had enough left overs to go for 2 days! I also got the crab cake special, which was large as well. The remoulade was so good, we threw some of that on the buffalo pizza! My son attends Culver Academy, and we frequent it very often. The employees are great, and always acknowledge the regulars. Tonight my son ordered a Chicken Caesar salad, with a side of kids Mac N Cheese. Manager comes out and says " your not a child" at first I thought she was kidding. Then she says it again " your not a child" . You would think for the amount of money we spend here during the year, she would have made it for him. Left in tears. Waiting for our to-go order, I kindly told our server that I am a recovering alcoholic (which I do not share, but was required on this rare occasion), and she was sweet enough to sit us by the window rather than wait for our food by the bar. Shortly after, Katie (her family owns Papa's) barges toward our table where we are the only ones sitting in the section, and kicks us out from our table to move us to the bar. This is my first time visiting Culver. My boyfriend's family have been living on the lake since the 1940's. To say I am shocked doesn't begin to explain how I feel. Inhumane and awful...I just hope no one ever has to feel the way Katie made me feel tonight. I share no animosity. Just wanted to share my experience in hopes to make this world a more loving and compassionate place to be. I hope the next time I visit Papa's it's a much better experience.
