Stopped by Carmela's at Macri's for dessert after a Notre Dame game and wow--we were blown away by all the delicious treats. From the cannolis to the cheesecake to the kolachkes (those buttery filled cookies)--everything was incredible. This is one of those places where I honestly recommend trying everything (no regrets here, lol). The environment is warm and welcoming, with super friendly staff that make you feel right at home. It's also in a great location in the city--easy to get to and perfect for a post-game treat or casual stop. They've even got a fun little section with Italian grocery staples, so you can grab a few things to take home. We'll definitely be back next time we're in South Bend!

A group of us went here for dinner tonight. The server was very good tonight. We started with the mushroom appetizer and it was excellent - you get four of them for $13. I ordered the chicken Parmesan and the breading on the chicken was so good. The pasta that came with it was good - some were very hot and others were cold. My other half ordered manicotti and the portion was only two pieces it seemed very small compared to the other meals. The best part was the dessert - we had the chocolate bomba which had chocolate and vanilla gelato in a dark chocolate shell with a cherry and almonds / it was excellent. I would recommend this place - it seemed pricy our meal was almost $85 They do charge a 3% fee if you use a credit card

Food was very good, lively place, friendly service. We got the park and the homemade lasagna. The sauces were the best part. The pasta could have been better - perhaps better noodles would help! Overall had a great time with my Dad here and would try it again.

I have to say I don't usually get veal parm but I got it here and wow I am happy with that choice for sure! It was cooked really well and it came with some pasta and overall delicious!! If you get a espresso martini make sure if you don't like chocolate to have them not add it in there, apparently they do it for the look and done ask you but I hate chocolate so I had to ask for another one. It wasn't very busy when we came in but somehow the waitress took a little bit of time to come back around everytime ‍

mostly the food was pretty good (especially the gnocchi) but some of the other food tasted kinda like microwaved frozen food (mostly the mozzarella sticks). service was nice, restaurant was really nice inside.

I was in South Bend for work and was suggested this place by a coworker and I was not disappointed. This place is located about a 7-minute walk from the heart of downtown South Bend, right across the river. I went on a Wednesday night and was able to sit down at the bar immediately. However, it did end up getting busy, I would suggest reservations if at all possible. The bartender was super nice and friendly. She provided great service and awesome suggestions. The inside is decorated very cute and almost makes you feel like you are in Italy - KUDOS! I opted for a House Salad and the Chicken Marsala. The house salad was great, and the entree came with bread as well. The Chicken Marsala was honestly the best I have ever had! The sauce was on point and the onions and mushrooms were abundant. The chicken was cooked to perfection and was juicy and tender. The only thing wrong was that I didn't order more! I will absolutely be going back next time I am in South Bend and would highly suggest this place to anyone in town!

South Bends Italian superstore! We had a wonderful celebration meal at Carmela's. Passing it over the years on the road and never getting a table. I made a reservation and the service meal and ambiance was in point. Eggplant Parmesan for me and my family loved the calamari.

Where do we go from here.... Probably not back, at least for a while. Please don't hurt me... no more. Yeah, I have that song in my head. We went for date night, really wanting some good pasta, but what we got was a pretty poor attempt at Italian by what seems as a chef who doesn't care. This is our third time here. Dessert the first two. And really those were pretty good, some better than others. But dinner tonight.... For starters our salad shouldn't have been served, looked like two day old lettuce. The bread, though fresh, really didn't have much taste. Unfortunately that just made me more critical. I ordered the carbonara, and my wife got the fettuccine, her baseline for an Italian restaurant hard to mess up, right? Nope. The carbonara, they wouldn't let me order without peas (said it was pre made... what? Should not be pré-made, that should have been my clue). But the peas were not fresh, and the dish was just ok. The shrimp tails weren't shelled. The fettuccine tasted like a weak milk sauce from powder. And unfortunately the pastry counter closed at 6 so only a few desserts. After that dinner we passed. Highlights were the Prosecco and the decor of the place, though simple it was clean and inviting. Service 3-4 Décore 3-4 Food 1

Dinner at Carmela's at Macri's is a given, but during the holidays is a must. The decor, the pastas, the desserts, the service - all superb! : House salad : Lasagna Bolognese : Gnocchi with vodka sauce : Tiramisu + bomba

We celebrated our anniversary last Saturday night. First time visit, we live in Michigan so we won't frequent, but it was good. Our food was good, but I wish I would have known how much I LOVED the marinara. I ordered the lobster ravioli, which was good but dang the marinara with the mozzarella sticks - chefs kiss! Speaking of mozzarella sticks they were delicious. Ordered an espresso martini and it also was good, maybe too much chocolate for me. Overall good service, good food and quick. We sat around 7:25 and had all of our food by 7:50. I also wish we would have got there when the bakery was still open, the thumbprint cookies looked real good in the case.

We didn't have reservations, but luckily it was only a 10-15 minute wait before we were seated. Our server was hustling and did a great job (never mentioned her name). The salad and garlic bread came out right away. The bar was a little backed up, but we eventually got our drinks. Just a glass of chardonnay for me and the hubby opted for the cinnamon maple old fashioned - definitely a miss with overly artifical tasting syrup. Our entrees came out quick, but were only warm not hot. I ordered the chicken carbonara, but it is not a true carbonara - it was a garlicky, heavy cream sauce. I had to ask for parmesan and pepper. There must be a shortage since salt and pepper were only on some of the tables and then another server came and took the parm and pepper before we were even done with our meals. My husband ordered the baked mostaccioli which came with meatballs and he added Italian sausage. The sausage was just sliced with no browning or coloring. The dish was definitely not baked, in fact the shredded mozzarella on top was barely melted. We ordered the tiramisu for dessert which was not good. It was layers of a thin spiced-like sponge cake instead of lady fingers and lacking in any sort of flavor. Overall, it was fine, but there are so many better options for amazing Italian in the area.

For $24/$25 a person, my bf and I ate like kings! If we were smart, we would have saved some for leftovers but we weren't, and ate everything. We left feeling so full! FYI, Sunny Italy Cafe is celebrating their 100th anniversary this year! First things first, I want to mention the fabulous service we received from our waitress, who has clearly worked here forever. She was kind, funny, and made us feel like family. When we were checking in for our 6:30 reservation, the man behind us was called by his name and given a big old hug by the elderly lady behind the hostess stand. He is clearly a beloved regular. I got their special cocktail, the $7 "Italian Wedding Martini," which is not a Martini at all, got me super tipsy. It was like the long Island iced tea but tastier and with amaretto. 10/10 would recommend. My boyfriend's pinot grigio wasn't my favorite but it was only $7. So I got the broiled chicken, salad with garlic sauce, the spaghetti as my side, and the bisque tortoni as my dessert, all for $24. My bf got the salad with french dressing, the sausage ragu, and pistachio cannoli for $25. The starter salad was basic but I enjoyed my homemade garlic sauce dressing immediately. Definitely not low calorie! FYI you can buy their dressings to bring home by the quart. Our waitress was excited to tell us that their complimentary Italian bread is supplied by a Chicago vendor called Gonnella's, which is also 100 years old. It was warmed up and incredible. One of the best free breads ever. The chicken was a massive portion, drenched in the most delicious herb-y oily sauce. Their famous spaghetti, which was my side, was clearly a very large portion for being a "side," but their famous sauce was fabulous. I'm very glad our waitress suggested I choose it as my side. My boyfriend, who has been to Sunny Italy before, ordered the sausage ragu for his main. Piled on top of a large pile of spaghetti were two massive sausages. It was yummy and filled him right up! Lastly, we indulged on our two Italian desserts. My bisque tortoni was an amaretto flavored rum ice cream and my boyfriend's cannoli was large and covered in pistachios. We are happy we basically got our desserts for free with this restaurant week special. All in all, for about $80ish dollars with tax and tip, we were very happy with our dinner here. I can't wait to come back and support this wonderful 100 year old family business!

I really did. But it just didn't show up. It was pretty bland overall, and most of the flavor came from the cupped pepperoni which tasted like something you'd grab off a store shelf. The sauce tried to make a comeback, but it got completely overshadowed. The rest of the food? Honestly solid. The Chicken Noodle Soup hit the spot, and the Shrimp Diavolo was actually really good. When seated, it was clear that 2 booths weren't large enough. One side crammed 4 people, etc. Flagging our server, I requested another booth because this was unacceptable. This resulted in yet another booth, but our party was so spread apart that it was impossible to interact. This was very disappointing, especially when the reservation was placed so far in advance, and confirmed, and we were paying $39.95 a person with a FIXED gratuity of 20%. (This was a BRUNCH, with no table service except for drinks). What could be done differently? On a busy holiday such as Mothers Day you need to have fixed seating times and adhere to them. I was told the party at our reserved table was finished, but NOT MOVING. Again, not acceptable. If a restaurant requires a credit card to hold the reservation, which this one did, we should expect what we requested. Our dining experience was tarnished because of this, and restaurant management should be prepared to deal with these kinds of incidents.
