They need to rename it to Papago Dairy Farms. Cow pasture. Greens are horrible. Played today and left 10 shots because of the greens alone. Fees are way too much. There are a lot of courses out there that are a lot better condition fir less money. I would suggest to avoid this place. Cart paths are dirt and mud. Its a real shame that this is ASUs replacement course. The ball doesn't roll. It hops to the hole. Fairways are really good though. Bunkers are terrible. Mostly dirt with a little sand mixed in. read more

This is an phenomenal challenging course, played this a few days ago and was shocked at how tough this course is. First time here and staff was super friendly and helpful from the second we parked to when we left. This course is tough, if you're not in the fairway you will be faced with very difficult shots. Heck even when you're in the fairway you will have difficult shots, it felt like every green was protected by bunkers and even the fairways. Once you find your way onto the greens it gets even harder, these are fast greens with true breaks so read them wisely and careful not to fly by the hole. Played a "round of golf" there yesterday and had a very disappointing golf experience. Their website mentioned course renovations, but I never imagined half of the 18 holes closed, such unacceptable fairway conditions, and temporary tees and one green that turned a par 4 to a 3. What made it even worse was that you are not informed at check in and you pay FULL RATE. I realize that the course would be outstanding when completed, but I will not be back after this experience. read more

Let's face it, area golf courses are subsidized by out of town golfers. Local rates versus visitors are ridiculous. Get ready to pay over $120 as a non-local at this dog track. And this course ain't worth it! Bare fairways, bare greens is not worth this price. I paid near the same amount to play the Raven with super conditions and a much better course layout. Not much of a club house but that's not a big deal. The staff were very friendly and an adequate practice facility. I really liked this course and I will play it again, my ball striking was so off today. The tee boxes were fine some patchy dry areas in the fairways but nothing drastic. I liked the layout,nice scenery. Not much water at all so your only hazards are the bunkers and yourself. Some of the fairways were fairly tight but otherwise it's wide open. Well placed bunkers and they were nice and soft. The greens were in great condition. Fast and smooth. Yup, I will definitely play here again. read more

Very disappointed in my experience with papago golf course. I was looking forward to a nice Saturday out golfing and was greeted with an almost unplayable course. Payed $70 to be surrounded by construction and horrible rock filled grass. Would have been nice to have been told that the course was under construction before driving out there. read more

We played on January 24th, 2023 and the conditions were awesome! We're from Northern California, so the visual differences are striking. The winter-brown bermuda grass on each side of the fairway bracketing the beautiful green winter rye over-seeding is really cool. The greens were tough to read with subtle breaks, but fair. The red rocks in the background just added to a very enjoyable day. The staff was beyond helpful and professional, and the pro shop and restaurant were very nice and new. The new restaurant and bar opened last Saturday . We went on Monday night. It's very well done, menu is quite good, good although not great selection of beers. A couple more ipas on tap would make it great, the Hop Knot was very good, but a local session ipa would be a good addition. I had the trout which was excellent. My spouse chose a burger, which she said was also very good. She likes Grigio, but it was not on the wine list. The outside area is very nicely done, cornhole, rocking chairs, sofas, misters and fire pits. Our waitress , Serena was excellent. read more

Just an update: What a difference five weeks makes... The grass really grew in the past five weeks and the course has greened up pretty good. The course isn't running firm and fast like it was last time I was out there. It's definitely playing longer now since there is substantially less roll on the fairways. And the greens are slower and bumpier than last time. The tees were also unmowed. Maybe they just went light on the mowing today, but I hope they firm up the course again. Hopefully they can find a balance of keeping the grass green in summer and still keeping the course firm. It was surprisingly slow out there too. I went out as a single and never had to join up with anyone. That's pretty rare for a day at Papago. read more

Papago Golf Course, future home of Arizona State University golf program has developed into a first rate, highly competitive course. Designed by Bill Bell, (of Torrey Pines fame) Papago was held in high esteem as one of the finest public links in the Phoenix Area. Most of the courses I have reviewed have been in the lower price range and more "affordable" but I had a chance to play Papago this past week as part of a scramble tournament. First. The pro shop is in a trailer until the new clubhouse is finished later this year. The new clubhouse will be magnificent! The staff in the pro shop are courteous, professional and helpful. Second, the course is clean, very well maintained and long! We played from the middle tees and it was 6400 yards. Play it from the tips and you'll play an honest 7300 yards. Many of the old trees were removed and the fairways are wife and open. Lastly, the greens are beautiful. NOTE. The true mark of a higher end course is the condition of the greens. Ball mark repairs and rolled greens take time and manpower. But if you can shave of 2-3 strokes because the greens roll true, that's a plus!! The down side. (Yup. There are a few) don't blink when you're driving on 52nd street or you'll miss the entrance on Mooreland. Also, don't blink when you're on Mooreland or you'll miss the turn into the course parking lot. The saying goes, "the mountains are on the north, the river is on the south so all greens go towards the river". Yeah. Nope! The greens are very deceptive. All in all. A fantastic course to play and when all the construction is finished, I'm going to upgrade my rating to 5 stars. "GO PLAY PAPAGO!" read more

If the course was $50 a round it would still be too much. At $130 I would have expected a quality course. If you don't mind playing in a field, dodging other's golf balls and playing sandy greens you will love this course. Also, they need signage for the course as to where the cart paths are located. Fairways and greens are lovely. Definitely a target golf type of course. Keep it on the green stuff. Everyone here is super friendly and accommodating. It has a neighborhood vibe but welcoming to all. Lou's Is a great place for any time of the day to sit and enjoy. I played the storied Papago Golf Course for the first time in March. After hearing positive things about the track from family members I was slightly disappointed. I appreciate that it is a Municipal course (that has been around since the Eisenhower administration) which in turn keeps the rates very modest but it was a little bit dumpy in my opinion. The fairways were in pretty bad shape and the facilities were definitely dated. That being said; the greens were in awsome shape and they sold us an entire 12-pack of suds and threw it into a large water bucket w/ ice. Fast greens and cold beers managed to salvage an enjoyable round. read more

Papago is a great place. Staff is accommodating and friendly. The location and scenery are great. One key problem, lack of posting for the appropriate tee off locations. Please mark by colors at each tee off. Provide better signage for those of us who are new to this course. Please consider making these suggested changes. My dad and I came here for a 10:40 tee time after getting frozed out at The Boulders on New Years Day. Almost everybody was a walker here. Besides us i think we saw 2-3 other golf carts. My dad has been playing for 20 years and me 2 1/2 and we have never seen so many walkers at a course. It was 40 degrees and below the whole day. Lucky for us i have Hot Hands in my bag. This is strictly a golfers course. There are no gimmicks here. There really is no signature hole but it is a great course for golfers and its long. We didnt play from the tips, but they are over 7300 yards. First time playing on Bermuda type green also. I liked them alot and wish more courses used it. read more

This course is a great value. It's not the cleanest cut of courses. But it is pretty solid. The price at $60 for a round is very reasonable. The grass is kind of dead on the fairways, and so you get some serious roll on your drives. Also the whole thing is in the middle of this rocky outcrop region of Phoenix with these massive red rock hills that are just absurdly cool to look at and are the backdrop during every hole. The one caveat here is that there's a bunch of desert instead of legit OB area on the side of every hole. You can go in and hit out of it, but there are rocks strewn throughout the sand and you are very likely to scuff up your clubs pretty good. Still, you can't beat the value here. I would definitely play this course again. read more

Course is like others have said a great value. It is well kept, Played in Aug, Sep, and 1st of Oct. Rates are very low during this time $28. Greens are well kept Bermuda, fast downhill with grain, very slow uphill against grain. So you have to pay attention to where on green you are and which way grain is going. Fairways are full of grass so must be well watered. Course has trouble in predictable places but nothing too tough. Desert waste areas are a lot of the trouble spots. If money is no object go to TPC Stadium course or Kierland and play. For 1/2 price of most other courses that are just a little more challenging and maybe not as well kept Papago is a real deal even at full price. NOTE: Do bring your desert club, you will eventually need it. "What's a desert club you ask?" It's a 5 to 7 iron that you don't mind taking chunks out of hitting from waste areas. If you don't have "desert" club. Just drop out, don't ruin your nice Callaway's or Taylormade's trying that impossible recovery shot. read more

Excellent condition of both the fairways and greens. Greens rolled true every single putt and bit well from most any distance, even though there were plenty of ball marks on most every part of every green. The must roll the greens more often than most courses, as the ball marks had been knocked down to manageable depth on most greens. Traps looked stunning, I loved their looks, well cut edges, but the sand was very thin and therefore hard to predict the bounce of the wedge at impact. Wide open fairways, lining other fairways, made some very wild shots land on playable grass, albeit from blind views. Every single fairway was in excellent shape, virtually every the entire length of the fairway. Pace of play? Perfect, we had two walkers and two riders, mid day on a week day. read more

A championship course that is mismanaged. Carts are supposedly 'programmed' to keep golfers out of the desert; they lock up at random times on the fairway or in the cart path - incredibly frustrating. There are no rangers or supervision of any kind, so the beginners/hackers control how long your round will take. It was over 5 hours for my group. read more

I don't golf. The whole idea of chasing a little white ball around a course confuses me to no end. But I do ride bikes. I've ridden around the outskirts of many golf courses over the years. Several times at other golf courses I've had golfers hit golf balls at me like I was the range guy driving around in that little truck with the rakes. Never at Papago though. I usually either get the "head nod" or a polite wave as I ride by. No insults thrown around, no golf clubs thrown at me, no golf balls used as projectile deterrents to dissuade me from riding around the borders. So I appreciate you Papago golf course. There's a great little simple bike trail around your borders, and your golfers are friendly folk. Can't ask for much more than that! read more

It is a crime how much they charge you to play golf at Papago. Of course, the customer is ripping the course off instead of the other way around. This place may not have a lot of frills, but it is a well-maintained, challenging, and fun desert course with beautiful views of the surrounding areas. You can play here for dirt cheap prices, especially in the warmer months if you can brave the heat. One of the best, if not the best, golf bargains in the valley. read more

I finally played Papago again (after the revamp) and I am impressed with the improvements. It was the best course in the City of Phoenix owned family, but with the new management and the revamp (old-vamp?) of the course...they apparently put the course back to being much closer to the way it was in the `60's...I found it to be a much better track. They removed a bunch of trees, which frankly make for much better sight lines from the tees and into the greens. Then trees that are left serve a purpose, and are attractive and in good health, as opposed to the trees and bushes that were essentially "debris" for the past few years. Also, the desert areas have been cleaned up and the course really looks nice! Finally, as with all City of Phoenix courses, it is really great to be able to walk a golf course, and play real golf, instead of the resort/cart golf that we have to play at most of the the resorts/clubs around here. I am looking forward to playing Papago again after they have the LPGA stop later this month. read more
