Papa's Supreme Combo Pizza
Ashleigh F.

We randomly found this place on Yelp when we were in the area. The business is located in a shopping plaza with other businesses. After we decided what we wanted and paid I checked in and found out there was a 10% off coupon on Yelp. After showing the cashier he took the 10% off of our our order. We sat in a booth while we waited for our food. Our food was done in a timely manner. We drove a short distance to our destination and the pizza was still warm. The supreme pizza was good but some of the vegetables pieces were really big. The slices of pizza were a nice size as well and were filling.

I used to like the wings here. But... This neighborhood restaurant a couple minutes away is not on our regular rotation, but it was National Breadstick Day, and it was the closest place that came up on Yelp for breadsticks, and we weren't feeling like Olive Garden. We should have gone to Olive Garden because their breadsticks are on point, while the breadsticks here were NOT breadsticks! The Pesto Cheese Breadsticks were just flattened out pizza dough sliced into thin columns and flavored with garlic and pesto. We ended up throwing out most of the leftover "breadsticks" because they just weren't very good. We also ordered bonein chicken wings, Meat Lasagna and some other pasta with meat sauce. The 2 entrees each came with a small garden salad. The salads were fine, but the rest of the foot was just mediocre. You probably won't love the food, but you won't hate it either. Prices are slightly high, but not out of line. I think our total was about $70. Soda is only available in 2-liter bottles so we ended up not eating our meal there since we each wanted a different soda flavor and didn't want to buy that much soda. I don't think I've ever tried the pizza here. A friend says it's good and orders from here all the time. Based on my dining experience, I'm not inclined to try it. We're pretty picky about pizza. The ambience is very casual, and you order and pay at the counter.

Jalepeño poppers
Sarah L.

We came in on a Saturday afternoon and placed a pick-up order of a medium pepperoni pizza and an order of jalapeño poppers. There was only one customer ahead of us who was waiting for a fairly large order (like 3 pizzas and some sides). After placing the order with the guy up front (who was super friendly), he said - give me like 10 - 15 minutes. As promised, a piping hot pizza that I saw him take from the oven was ready in a little over 10 minutes, with which the jalepeño poppers came to a total of ~$17 pre-tip. I had forgotten to get a 2L bottle of soda which he rang up after at like $3. The jalepeño poppers were SO GOOD (served with a side of ranch) and the pizza was cheesy and hot. I would consider this place to be a little hidden gem and we will definitely come back.

Papa's Combo Pizza

We are locals and have been ordering from here for at least 8 years. We support small businesses and loved this place, but the last 3-4 pizzas we've ordered here have been dramatically different and look nothing like the pictures I see in other reviews. The crust is flat, tasteless and doesn't taste fresh anymore. The sauce is scant and there is are hardly any cheese or toppings at all. I don't know if they switched owners or what, but it is no longer a place I will go to or recommend to friends. What a shame. It used to be so good back in the day. Not anymore.

How annoying is it arriving somewhere and realizing it's closed. We arrived at 9:15pm. The sign clearly says it's open and Google and yelp say it's open till ten, but we arrived and the doors were locked. If you look close there was a guy there in the front making boxes. And instead of just confirming with us that it's closed he just completely ignored us when we were at the door. So my review is based off the service. We didn't even get to try the food .

My neighborhood stop for meatball sandwiches, ravioli, pizza, salads. It's good for a fast meal. Order, pick up or have it delivered. Always good.

Torpedo

I tried their sandwich for the first time, got the torpedo with everything on it. Sooooo good. Good mix of meats, and the veggies were super fresh and crunchy. It was bomb, looking forward to trying the other ones on the menu.

WOW.... deadass best pizza in all of SD ! The only other time I've enjoyed pizza is in the bay area . Not overly oily as some places tend to be , cheese is bomb , crust is bomb, price is bomb.... Highly recommend, been here a few times, never disappoints!

The ambiance is very dive bar, but also very personable and welcoming. The wings... are probably the best wings in Pacific Beach... maybe in all of San Diego. Their awards don't lie. The wings are big meaty portions, and juicy to the bite. We ordered a set of 10 wings, all flats, half lemon pepper and half apple bourbon chipotle (a fan fave). Did not disappoint!!! Ask the staff their favorite flavors - ALWAYS! My only note is they could make a better mojito, but I'll just order a different drink next time. 10/10 will be back again!

In true "us" fashion, we somehow didn't fully take advantage of all the drink deals--I have no idea why we always do that!--but the food and ambiance more than made up for it. Plus, our server was pretty helpful and awesome. We ordered: Wings (5 Spicy Garlic & 5 Ninja): Both flavors were delicious. The Ninja sauce was so good we actually talked about taking a bottle home to brush over smoked ribs! Fried Shrimp Taco: Had an incredible, satisfying crunch. The sauce on top was a bit heavy-handed for my personal taste, but the flavor was spot on. Baja Fiesta Salad with Beef: Fresh veggies and a perfectly crisp tortilla bowl. We were able to finish the whole thing before any part of the shell got soggy, which is rare for taco salads! Plain Tater Tots: Served with that ideal golden-brown outer crisp. Tips: Time it right: If you love a good deal, drop by on their promo days for the half-off specials on tacos and tequila and other deals they have. Sauce on the side: If you prefer controlling your crisp-to-sauce ratio on fried items like the shrimp taco, ask for the top sauce on the side. What's your favorite chicken wing flavor? The business still features offerings from Mati's, but it is now a food collective. A chicken wing vendor and a future chicken and waffles vendor will be sharing the same kitchen. Parking is free for up to 30 minutes in the shared lot. After that duration, you need to pay at one of the available kiosks. Since these were the early days of The Playground, there were operational kinks that need to be smoothed out. First were the unusual business hours (e.g. 9 am to 9 pm on Thursday and Friday, only 7 pm to 9 pm on Sunday, etc). My initial attempt to visit occurred after work on a weekday. Despite the supposed closing time of 11 pm, the doors were locked at 5:30 pm. Second was the lack of prices on the menus. That is a cardinal sin in my book because if you are open to the public, then you owe it to the customers to disclose the costs. The first item for my to-go order was a snack size serving (six pieces) of Chicken Wings. I picked Bonnie's Barbeque for a sauce that featured a sweet and smokey flavor. The wings were coated with the sauce and not deep fried which made them a bit healthier. The second item was a Birria Quesadilla that came with consome on the side. A flour tortilla was filled with cheese, marinated shredded beef, cilantro, and onion. It was then sliced into smaller triangular pieces and then separated by aluminum foil in a takeout box. The consome had moderate richness while the cheesy, beefy tortilla was filling. I didn't understand the meaning of the new moniker as the interior setup had not been modified. It certainly did not have the ambiance of a playground. My first impression of this place was a three star rating with multiple areas of needed improvement including signage on the marquee. If one is driving down Mission Blvd, then there is no way to notice from the roadside that The Playground even exists.

I rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience was too appalling to ignore. I visited the…read moreplayground with high hopes based on the reviews, but what I got instead was a stomach-turning disaster. I ordered the Birria Crunch Wrap, and halfway through eating, I discovered a long strand of hair buried in the food. Not just on top in the food. It was clearly cooked into the dish, which tells me that basic hygiene in the kitchen is completely lacking. When I pointed it out to the server, she barely apologized and offered to remake it, as if that would magically erase the thought of chewing through someone else's hair. No manager came to speak to us, no discount, no sense of urgency or genuine concern. The rest of the food wasn't memorable either--bland, lukewarm, and overpriced for the quality. But honestly, after the hair incident, I couldn't bring myself to take another bite. If you value cleanliness and basic health standards, avoid this place. There are plenty of other restaurants that know how to wear a hairnet.

I would die for their wings and the truffalo sauce, which you can order by the bottle for take home. Forgot to take a picture during my visit but they were piping hot, large wing that were sauced up beautifully. Staff is always friendly and the ambiance is a vibe. A classic tap room for sure. Beers are excellent and they even have ones that are rare to find like Cascade brewery (once the keg is empty it's gone forever, since Cascade closed). I immediately enjoyed the open environment and the bar set up, but the high top tables were scattered seemingly randomly throughout the restaurant, making it very hard to weave your way through if you need to get to the back of the restaurant for any reason or to use the restroom. Our waitress was very friendly and always smiling, which was really refreshing. We ordered two drinks (not pictured), but I had a hard kombucha or cider that was made by the taproom and very delicious. We ordered the chicken wings and spicy tuna melt with sweet potato fries. Both items came out hot and we're satisfying, but you're not going to have an aha culinary moment here. All in all, I would definitely return for the drinks and atmosphere, but would not run back for the food.
