Papa Peter's - Hidden gem outside Tomball In our hunt for something new for a Saturday lunch, we stumbled onto Papa Peter's just outside Tomball. Lunch hour on a Saturday usually means a crowd. Not this time. We had the dining room almost to ourselves, which was lucky for us and, frankly, a little too quiet for a kitchen this good. They've only been open about four months. The owner previously ran one of the Louisiana Fish House restaurants, and it shows. Papa Peter's feels like an upscale cousin of that concept: polished without being stuffy, and the menu is a knockout. We started with the potato soup. It was loaded with far more than potatoes and set the tone for the whole meal. I ordered the Cajun Catfish Étouffée. My bride, who will not touch seafood, went with the Blackened Chicken Alfredo. Check the photos. Those two plates could have fed three people. The portions were generous, the flavor was excellent, and nothing arrived looking like an afterthought. From the room to the service to the food itself, everything landed. We told the manager we would write this review because we genuinely want this place to take off. Because the amazing rating is well deserved. --- --- --- For those who enjoy patronizing restaurants with extremely high Yelp ratings, you know that even with only about 40 reviews, if a place has a 4.9 star rating, it should always vault to the top of your list. I have had my eye on this place for weeks, so when I saw that a place we were planning to take our son was only a mile and a half away, I knew exactly where we'd be going for lunch. We started off with the calamari and it was pretty much perfect. I liked that they brought out some aioli for dipping to go along with the marinara. Pro tip: the perfect bite is to dip your squid in both. 5-stars. While I was very tempted by the steaks, I've been eating a ton of steak at home lately, so I opted for the ribs instead. These were high quality, and I did enjoy them, but I would probably just stick with a steak next time. The same can be said for the mashed potatoes: good, but I wouldn't need to repeat the order. 4-stars. My wife ordered a shrimp po boy and the mac-n-cheese. I thought the mac was the single best thing we ate here. It was perfect in every way. And the shrimp po boy probably had more shrimp than any shrimp po boy I've ever had. 5-stars. Our son ordered chicken tenders and fries. I probably ate as much chicken as he did because I could not stay away from his plate. The good news is: there was plenty to go around. 5-stars. Granted, we arrived at around 11:20a on a Sunday, but we were literally the only customers in here until the last few minutes before we left. While we live about half an hour away and are not able to be regulars, I really hope that the great people of the Creekside area support Papa Peter's, because they are doing some really great stuff here! The menu and the quality of the food reminds me of a place on 105 called Oscar's. If you've been to both, I'd love to know if you think that comparison lands. We had been patiently waiting for this restaurant to open and were so excited to finally visit for the first time this evening. There really isn't anything quite like it in the Creekside area, and it was absolutely worth the wait. We ordered the crawfish étouffée with garlic toast, the King Ranch ribeye with the Cajun topping and broccoli, and started with the thin onion rings and bacon-wrapped BBQ shrimp. Every single dish was delicious, honestly, everything exceeded our expectations! We also enjoyed a pineapple margarita and an Old Fashioned, both of which were excellent. Our server, Rickie, was attentive, friendly, and made our experience even better. We also had the pleasure of meeting the manager, Roger, who was welcoming and genuinely enjoyable to talk with. That means it's not yet crowded. The menu has a mix of steak, seafood, sides, and appetizers. Everything we tried was outstanding / not kidding. My snapper was cooked to perfection and the topping just made it all even so much better! I absolutely cannot wait to work my way through their menu. The place is laid back. Everything from the service to the food to the laid back casual atmosphere was amazing. We went as a family of 4 and had an awesome experience from start to finish. Our waiter Ricki was so kind and attentive. We started with the crabcakes (sauce on the side) and they were outstanding. We moved on to the filets which were cooked perfectly, the catfish poorboy, (a recommendation by Ricki) which my husband said was awesome, and buttered pasta with garlic bread. Amazing service, amazing food! To start I'd like to say that the manager Roger came up to our table and talked to us personally for a few minutes. This type of service is something you'd see at a white table cloth style restaurant. Our server Rickie was so sweet and attentive. We had the Red Snapper with mashed potatoes and asparagus. It was one of the best we've ever had. The steak salad was fresh as well as the Caesar salad! The chicken is marinated in a rosemary sauce and we loved it so much that when we told the manger, he shared with us that even the chicken tenders are marinated in this sauce overnight to give them flavor. We also had the hush puppies and the gator bites.... 10/10. This is the kind of place you go when you want high end food but want less fuss getting ready and can go in your comfortable clothes. We stopped by after seeing a FaceBook post from Food Happenings, and I'm so glad we did! Everything about our visit was outstanding--from the excellent service to the spotless atmosphere and delicious food. My husband thoroughly enjoyed the sirloin, and I had the blackened chicken... hands down the juiciest chicken I've ever had! Tatiyana was our server, and she was incredibly professional, attentive, and courteous throughout the meal. Roger, one of the managers, also stopped by a couple of times to check on us, which really added a personal touch. Wow! I almost didn't try this place because it's been "Coming Soon" for almost exactly 2 years!! But I was looking for something different tonight and it popped up on Yelp and had great reviews so I decided to check it out and I'm so glad I did. The food is SO good!!! Came here for a birthday dinner for my daughter. We arrived around 6pm on a Saturday. Greeted immediately and seated. We got our drinks and chose the calamari for an appetizer. They were cooked to perfection, not rubbery at all. Two of us got the filet with the oscar topping. I got to try a bite, very tender, juicy and tasty. I got the blackened catfish with crawfish ettoufee. Very good! It had been a minute since I've had some ettoufee and this really hit the spot. The kids ordered from the kids menu. The sirloin steak my granddaughter had did appear rather tough. The other adult got the fried shrimp platter and unfortunately it had to be sent back due to the food being cold. Our thought is that they may have had the shrimp already cooked and had it waiting for the other entrees to finish. They redid the plate without question and the second plate was nice and hot. It did probably take 15 minutes before it arrived. So, in summary, other than the hiccup on the cold plate, we were very pleased with the meal. I would say that we wouldn't mind trying them again. read more

The service was great, personable staff, and really good food. Calamari, salmon Alexander, ribeye, and old fashioned were all very good. I had redfish topped with crab and shrimp with a perfect wine sauce. Not split, lots of base flavor. And he had tender blackened chicken. So yummy. So happy this place is finally open! Came for lunch after hearing amazing things online. We have been waiting forever for this place to open and finally gave it a try. We came for lunch and started with fried calamari. I normally think calamari is super rubbery and gross, but the calamari here is excellent! It's fried to perfection and the batter seasoning is on point..I also had to have a frozen Marg, because of course I did. It was super refreshing and perfect on a hot day. For my meal, I got the crawfish Ettoufe which was creamy and delicious with the perfect amount of kick to it. Not too spicy, but just the right amount. My husband got the Pete's platter and loved ever single item on it. We cannot wait to come back and try everything on their menu. It's so nice to have something of this caliber in a neighborhood setting, and honestly for the quality of the food - the pricing is extremely reasonable. Went yesterday for a late lunch/early dinner and it was amazing! The crawfish bisque had tons of crawfish and a delicious flavor. We also tried the seafood fondue as an appetizer. It was perfect! If you love the one at Babin's or Pappadeaux, you'll be happy to have this dish available closer than having to drive over to I-45! My daughter got the seafood burrito and it's MASSIVE!!! Husband ate the leftovers we brought home and they both give it 2 thumbs up. It has a delicious creamy seafood sauce over the top of it that we dipped our fries into. I went with the stuffed crab and fries. Delicious! It comes in a medium or large size. The medium has 2 stuffed crabs and I can't recall what our server said is the large size. The fries are very thin, cooked perfectly, and they have delicious seasoning on top. We took home a few to-go boxes and our food was boxed up for us tableside. Very nice touch. They have flavored teas and lemonades. I got the mango tea unsweetened and daughter got mango lemonade. Both great! Daughter said she couldn't taste the mango that much but really loved the drink. Our server was Tsjaa and she was lovely. The manager stopped by a few times too to check on us. One thing to be aware of is that at the bottom of the check, it is stated: Cash discounted pricing on menu. Card price displayed on check. This wasn't an issue to me but I think some folks could feel differently since you don't see that statement until you receive your bill. This place first leased their space at least 2 years ago. I despaired of their ever opening, and am glad they got the doors open. We stopped in the other night for a nice dinner out. Got the gator bites for an appetizer, the King Ranch ribeye with asparagus and a side salad, and the fried catfish with a loaded baked potato. We had a Moscow Mule and raspberry iced tea for drinks, and finished with the carrot cake. We also got hush puppies--more on that below. Usually I start with the food, but this time I need to start with the service. The people were friendly, enthusiastic and helpful. But there were a lot of issues, too many to gloss over. 1) We came in the side door from the back parking lot. There's a booth right next to this door, and that's where we were seated. You don't want this spot. Every time new patrons entered we got a blast of hot air, so we were a bit sweaty for the meal. 2) When we were seated we were asked about drinks, but not appetizers. The drinks were dropped off without an opportunity to add anything. We were ready for our mains when I got the chance to order the appetizer. So it delayed things. A minor miscommunication. 3) When the order came to the table it had fried crawfish instead of catfish. So I ate my steak while they corrected the order. Awkward. 4) I never got the side salad mentioned above. Would have asked but I forgot about it. We did get offered something to make up for the order mistake, and settled on hush puppies. The food was a mixed bag. The gator bites were great--done perfectly with a tasty breading. This is not easy for gator, it dries out quickly. The server told us you can get other preparations if you ask, and recommended blackened. Would get that next time. The steak was decent. The ribeye had a lot of gristle, which is not unusual for that cut. It had a nice dollop of butter on it. The asparagus that came with it was great--nicely seasoned and done perfectly. The catfish was a large helping, three good-sized filets so there was plenty to take home. The breading was good. The fish itself was slightly chewy and fishy, just OK. The potato was fine. The hush puppies arrived after the mains. I'm glad we got to try them, they were very good--crispy but not hard outside, fluffy inside, and slightly sweet. Would order a dish with those for sure. The Moscow Mule was OK, kind of heavy on the lime. I asked about mocktails but they don't have those, so I got raspberry tea. The raspberry tea was sweeter than I expected. When I got a refill I was asked if I wanted sweet or unsweet, and I asked for unsweet. But either there was no option or what I got was in fact the unsweet tea. Either way it hit the spot--I finished two glasses. The raspberry is quite strong. I liked it. The carrot cake was drizzled with a sweet caramel sauce, so it was sweet on sweet. I like a sweet dessert, so this worked for me. Can't tell if the carrot cake was homemade, it was dense like a purchased one but quite tasty. Why am I even giving this 3 stars? The friendliness and good intentions count, and the bright spots tell me that there are better things on the menu. Maybe we just had bad luck on the service. The interior is nicely decorated in a Texas theme. The bathrooms were clean and ready. Papa Peter's seems to be positioned as a mildly upscale value place, about like Outback. Is it better? Can't say that. For about the same price you get two sides with an Outback entree, with solid quality. And while I liked the gator bites, I do love the blooming onion. But I can see that lots of folks do like Papa Peter's, and I hope they do well. read more

Atchafalaya catfish was served fried instead of blackened or grilled as stated on the menu, it was a soggy mess that didn't taste good at all with the crawfish on top tasting very fishy. The food was great. I had a 8 ounce fillet and mashed potatoes. The flavor was perfectly done to my order and very tender. The cost at $34 was probably $20 less than the high end steakhouses and nearly as good tasting. The salad to start was fresh and the Greek dressing was very good. A good dressing makes the salad. My wife had a combination of the ribs and fried shrimp, also with mashed potatoes. The ribs were flavorful and tender, and she said the shrimp had an excellent batter. They had only been open for about two months and probably were a little short staffed as our waitress did not come by very often and it took a little while to pay. Those issues are curable, much easier than if the food was bad. The waitress was extremely polite and provided good feedback to any questions we had on the menu. She knew the wines off the top of her head which made ordering a glass of Pinot Noir easy. The ambience was excellent. We sat in a comfortable booth. The tables appeared spaced to allow private conversations. Everything was new and maybe just short of what would be considered an upscale finish. Definitely not a hole in the wall decor. read more

Stopped by for lunch today after church. It was our first time coming and we picked it based off of Yelp reviews. The place is a little hidden gem. The calamari and fried alligator appetizers were delicious and probably the best we'd had in a while. The gator was tender and not gamey or chewy. We loved all the dipping sauces that came with the appetizers. For our main courses we had 1. the Sophia 8oz filet mignon with steamed broccoli and a baked potato soup, 2. the salmon Oscar with asparagus, green beans, and a Caesar salad 3. the crawfish etoufee with. House salad, 4. the 8oz sirloin with green beans and a house salad and 5. The kid's popcorn shrimp with French fries. Everything was delicious. The service provided by Erica and Roger was excellent. They were friendly and attentive and had excellent recommendations. The restaurant itself is very clean and there was no wait. We ordered a strawberry cheesecake to go and it was delicious.
