The Tax Deduction and I were on yet another trip to Idaho. We have family there. Feeling hungry and…read morecoming up on Baker City we started talking about where to eat. We decided we were tired of the national chains and wanted to do something local. A quick scan of the Yelp app and we were headed for Burger Bobs! We arrived to a charming old time burger stand. No tables inside or out, you either take it with you or tailgate. The owner warned us it would be about 25 minutes for food because they were backed up. We deeply appreciated the warning! Tired of the road we decided to wait and do some walking around. The Tax Deduction ordered the Steak Fries and I decided to try the Super Burger with fries. The menu is really complete, everything you can think of, see the photos. Talking to the owners we learned this building started as a Arctic Circle burger joint in 1960. They seem to be the second owners of the building. There is evidence of their support for local community events and schools on the walls and windows, which I think is awesome. Our food was great, we really loved the fresh fries and the burger was perfect in every way. The steak fries were loaded with steak chunks and had plenty of fries. It is a ways off the Interstate, you have to be looking for this place, and willing to eat in the elements or in the car. But, if you choose to, you will be rewarded with great service, great food and owners who truly appreciate the business.

The place is clean and offers a fresh salad bar. Hailey was great as a server!!! Also the menu is vast and reasonable. Listen this place has a soup and salad bar are you kidding me? Where do those exist anymore? And it was really good food you had a large salad that was delicious. I'm a chicken fried steakgravy snob and so I had to try it first and they didn't even hesitate to give me a sample. It was fantastic so we got the chicken fried steak and not too was pretty freaking good. We also had beer battered mushrooms and holy cow they were delicious. If you're ever in the Baker City area of Oregon you should check out the Baker Truck Corral! It was a Ma and Pa type diner vibe with a pretty vast menu. We shared a dinner of chicken fried steak and it was absolutely delicious. The Yelp reviews aren't that great and I'm confused by that because I thought it was fantastic. Definitely if you're in the area stop in Baker City and go to the Baker Truck Corral.

I don't care how old you are it's hard not to smile when you hear the little choo-choo making its rounds. Now, onto the food. I spotted the patty melt on the menu, and that's becoming a rare find these days, so I had to order it. The rye bread was absolutely on point. My only stop on the track was that I wanted a little more "melt" in my patty melt. A bit more cheese and a heavier hand with the grilled onions would've really punched my ticket to flavor town. That said, it was still a solid sandwich, and I appreciate that they're keeping this classic alive. Instead of fries, I switched to a Caesar salad, and that turned out to be the right move it was fresh, crisp, and hit the spot. Mom got the breakfast she was craving, so everybody left happy. The prices are fair, the building has plenty of character, and we snagged a comfortable booth with a view of Main Street. It doesn't get much more Baker City than sitting there watching the town go by. This place isn't trying to be a fancy dining experience, and that's exactly why it works. Good food, friendly atmosphere, a little train circling overhead, and enough small-town charm to keep me coming back. I'd happily climb aboard this train again. Choo choo!
