The Tax Deduction and I were on yet another trip to Idaho. We have family there. Feeling hungry and coming up on Baker City we started talking about where to eat. We decided we were tired of the national chains and wanted to do something local. A quick scan of the Yelp app and we were headed for Burger Bobs! We arrived to a charming old time burger stand. No tables inside or out, you either take it with you or tailgate. The owner warned us it would be about 25 minutes for food because they were backed up. We deeply appreciated the warning! Tired of the road we decided to wait and do some walking around. The Tax Deduction ordered the Steak Fries and I decided to try the Super Burger with fries. The menu is really complete, everything you can think of, see the photos. Talking to the owners we learned this building started as a Arctic Circle burger joint in 1960. They seem to be the second owners of the building. There is evidence of their support for local community events and schools on the walls and windows, which I think is awesome. Our food was great, we really loved the fresh fries and the burger was perfect in every way. The steak fries were loaded with steak chunks and had plenty of fries. It is a ways off the Interstate, you have to be looking for this place, and willing to eat in the elements or in the car. But, if you choose to, you will be rewarded with great service, great food and owners who truly appreciate the business. read more

Oooh, a hidden local gem we found thanks to Yelp. Ordered the steak strips and a hot pastrami sandwich. The food was hot and fresh. Service was friendly and helpful. The French fries were down right amazing. Wish I would have tried the raved about burger, but went for the hot pastrami sandwich, since I'd had never had one before. It definitely did not disappoint. Driving through camping, and got hungry. I love a dive burger place so Burger Bob's got me excited. When we asked the Les Schwab guy about it, he told us with the most enthusiastic "good choice" that we needed to try the chicken burger and curly fries. Baker City is named after the only Senator killed in Combat and has less than 10k people! It's located in Northern Oregon two hours from Boise. This is my 439th review. It has the biggest, most crazy dollar store I've ever seen! I digress... As the quote above suggests, and then my description of Burger "Bob's" many names, I found myself scratching my head wondering what their "original" name is. In the front lobby (no dining in) they have newspaper articles about the family-owned business and advertisements for "Happy Burger" and newspaper articles for Arctic Circle opening in Baker city at the same location, yet it's called Burger Bobs-- not to be confused with Bob's Burgers (the reason I bookmarked lol), so I don't know what their "real" family-owned and operated name is. Nevertheless... The place was busy with cars backed up waiting for 20 minutes, which has to mean this place is really good or the locals are loyal or don't have anywhere else to go! They had many call=in orders. The locals were flying in and out. Hell, they have a 1/2 gallon ice cream challenge! The menu looked like an old diner, overly caloric and full of yummy goodness. I went with a chicken strip basket sub onion rings-- skip it. Nothing special. In fact the chicken awkward tasting, the onion rings felt like they were in oil that's been there since they opened and I threw them out at the rest area. It's all in the experience, right-- that's my motto! The staff was friendly albeit it slow and somewhat "new" acting. Understandable. The cook sat down on his phone often, while the food was cooking or the fries were in the fryer as opposed to cleaning or providing excellent customer service-- MULTITask people! Stopped in the town to grab something to eat. Found this spot and wanted to support instead of going to a McDonalds. Took a few minutes to review the menu and walked in to order. First my husband was not acknowledged instead, the cashier asked the man in the Trump hat if we were with him. Once he said no he said something. We probably should have left when we saw the woman in the back handling the food without gloves, but we figured oh well she must have washed them. While waiting in line we had the opportunity to overhear the conversation between the man who was a cashier and a customer since the lobby is super small. We left after hearing him make derogatory comments about the Black Lives Matter Movement to the customer in the Trump hat, all while a Book of Mormon sits on the counter. Under normal circumstances this shit doesn't bother me, everyone has the right to their own opinion, but where is the common decency in front of potential customers. We literally had 8 orders we were about to place. On top of this I actually spoke to the customer with the Trump hat on when he walked in. It's disappointing that people go out of their way to make others feel uncomfortable. If you haven't realized my family is black. The other family we were traveling with was black and Hawaiian and between us we had 4 kids. I'm so glad they weren't in there to hear it. I feel bad because I can't provide a full review on Burger Bobs, since I have not sampled their burgers yet. Please forgive me. The story here is that as we were heading back to Idaho from a road trip in Oregon, we were passing through Baker City, and both my wife and I wanted a snack. We wanted ice-cream, but couldn't find a place open, then we checked Yelp for drive-in places, thinking we could pick up something cold there. Ta Da, we found Burger Bobs. I ordered a large set of French Fries, and my wife ordered a chocolate shake. Honestly, the shake was ok (not bad, not exceedingly great), but I have to tell you something... The french fries were out of this world. I'm a french fry junky. I am the the Will Rogers of french fries. I believe that heaven will be composed of rivers of french fries that flow into potato chip oceans. Ok, enough of that, but you get the idea... The french fries we were served from Burger Bobs were some of the best I have ever tasted. Fried perfectly, still hot, tasting fresh, with just the right amount of salt. There is a huge amount of variability in french fries from every restaurant, and no two places do them exactly the same every time (except McDonalds). These fries were nothing short of amazing. My only regret is that I didn't order two large orders, so that I could have enjoyed them twice as much. Someday we'll be back to conduct a full evaluation of one of my other obsessions... Since moving to town, I have found this a mainstay for delicious food, wonderful customer service, and good prices. Baker City is a great, old-fashioned community that has always excelled at providing superb choices in foods. For a community of this size, it has something for everyone - Chinese, Mexican, Sushi, street tacos, pizza, and so much more. One of my favorites has to be the wonderful choice of burgers. As a child, the In and Out, and the Little Pig, where a favorite to visit with the grandparents. The places of old have changed or gone completely, but Burger Bobs has ensured the deliciousness of the past have a steady, reliable home here in Baker. The food is always piping hot and fresh. The drinks are not watered or iced down. The ice cream smooth and delicious. The ingredients fresh from the perfectly ripened tomatoes to the real meat used in their patties. Of course, I can't forget to mention the power of bacon. There is no skimping on portions either! Oh, and don't forget to give the Baconeer, or my favorite, finger steaks a try. I promise you won't be disappointed. The wait at the drive through can be a bit longer because the food is made to order. For a truly wonderful experience, park and head inside.There is an indoor ordering area with a single, sturdy wooden bench. But while you wait, explore the board of images showing the people that can take down the 64 ounce milk shake - as much as I love ice cream, I would never be able to take down that bad boy. Grab a Tid Bits while inside. Of course, watch the folks at work completing the orders while the aroma of freshly prepared bacon lingers in the air. I was on a long road trip when my two friends and I found Burger Bob's. We were hungry and not expecting much as we pulled up to this small drive-in. Upon reading their menu, the kid in me was awaken. Talk about a place that deserves to be on diners drive-ins and dives; Everything looked so delicious. My friends and I were talking about how exciting the menu was, and how glad we were to have found a place that sells a sweet cream cheese pretzel. Upon hearing this, a man who seemed to be the owner gave us each a Burger Bob's bracelet, which I plan to wear 24/7. This place should pop up when you image search "bang for your buck." If you're upset over frozen food, grow up; The burger is $4. The jalapeño cheddar burger was incredible, and the sweet cream cheese pretzel was nothing if not imaginative. Many negative reviews I have read have been due to poor mask-wearing and right-sided political talk, and as somebody who identifies as liberal, to this I say, what did you expect from a non-chain family-owned drive-in located in Baker City? Almost didn't come here after reading some of the reviews but we decided we'd decide for ourselves and we're glad we did! Food came out fresh and fast. Yes the burgers are thin and I usually hate thin burgers because they're always dry and burnt but that isn't the case with these. They're also a much cheaper option than the other places in town so we decided to try a little of everything and spent around $20 for everything shown in the picture, plus a large soda and a chocolate milkshake (so freaking good). Grilled cheese was a few slices of cold cheese on a toasted bun. The kahuna meals were both on stail-hard buns that we could barely chew through and the meat was dry. Fries were tasteless and the fry sauce is an unimaginative catchup & Mayo mix. You can watch them prep the food and nearly everything is frozen prepackaged including the meat. I found it oddly disturbing that they spend a lot of time weighing portions to the point of hovering over each fry basket adding and removing single fries to get the right weight. This made the order of 2 kahuna meals take an exceedingly long time. This was first stop here and I don't think I'll come back. Well, I should listen to my friends when they told me to pass on Burger Bob's. I had a "double" and it was about the size of a McDonalds small single but with another Patty. No tomato, no onion slices and pretty bland all in all. The fries we're decent but in no way was the Burger worth $3.50. The wife said the onion rings we're "OK" but greasy. Her "super" looked lacking as well. Drive-in burgers should be packed on with tomato slices and onion slices. Her Burger was $4.50. Amazing service and super clean. I had the fried Cod but it was not too great. It was typical packaged and not juicy or battered lightly, buuuuut the sweet potato fries were really good (too much salt though). Menu is great which includes American fast food ie., ice cream and burgers. No outside seating but you can drive your car up and park under the car port. My husband and I like stopping at places that aren't chain restaurants so we found this place on our way back to Idaho. It's just a little drive-in in the middle of a little town where you drive 25 mph on all the roads. My husband Ryken got the pastrami burger and I got a regular hamburger. Ryken really liked his burger but mine was nothing special. I thought it was a little small. We got tater tots that were yummy and we both got milkshakes. they can be a bit pricey but if your cheating your diet they have some really good food. other reviewers aside talking about their plain hamburgers, if you get a monster or one of their other burgers they all taste really good. even though the price seems a bit high, if your going to burger bobs try the pickle fries. they have shakes thicker than dairy queen so if your a fries and strawberry person this it the place for you. i really like the baconator. and they make the tater tots almost perfect. the chicken strips are a bit dry but if you have a large order they are always nice enough to give you a box to carry your food so that your not juggling bags around. read more
