Sumpter Junction was always a favorite for our family when we lived there and the last time I visited it was closed- imagine my surprise when I came through town this time and it was open!!! All aboard! The first thing that caught my eye was the cute little train set wrapping its way around the restaurant. I don't care how old you are it's hard not to smile when you hear the little choo-choo making its rounds. Now, onto the food. I spotted the patty melt on the menu, and that's becoming a rare find these days, so I had to order it. The rye bread was absolutely on point. My only stop on the track was that I wanted a little more "melt" in my patty melt. A bit more cheese and a heavier hand with the grilled onions would've really punched my ticket to flavor town. That said, it was still a solid sandwich, and I appreciate that they're keeping this classic alive. Instead of fries, I switched to a Caesar salad, and that turned out to be the right move it was fresh, crisp, and hit the spot. Mom got the breakfast she was craving, so everybody left happy. The prices are fair, the building has plenty of character, and we snagged a comfortable booth with a view of Main Street. It doesn't get much more Baker City than sitting there watching the town go by. This place isn't trying to be a fancy dining experience, and that's exactly why it works. There was a breakfast item on the menu that didn't make a lot of sense but kind of sounded good. Thought that it was going to be a bacon flavored or enhanced chicken fried steak. It was not it was bacon just breaded. I asked if I could get a chicken fried steak cause the waitress did not explain it correctly and they said no I would have to pay for a whole extra breakfast. This place wants to nickel and dime everybody I would not recommend it even after them denying me to switch what was delivered for what I wanted. They wanted to charge me extra for the gravy as well. You would be better off going somewhere else. read more

Inside out: easy place to get in and out of with ample parking. The outside is well put together and cute and the inside is outstanding in its homey feel, of course the train is a major attraction and we thought it was so fun to take pictures of it as it went around! Service: fast and friendly, we came for breakfast and it was stellar even as the place filled up our waitress kept our coffee warm and water full and checked in on us multiple times. Food: the food was delicious, average quality and not terribly expensive. The coffee was tasty and everyone almost cleared their plate! What is better than that? Breakfast is one of our favorite meals and this place doesn't let you down. My mother in law is celiac and they offered her a gluten free bun so she could have 'toast' with her breakfast and that made her day! read more

Good grub but a bit high priced. We had friendly, efficient service. Coffee was always full too. I had the chicken and biscuits which was cooked tasty. The gravy was excellent! The wife had the chicken fried steak which was a typical frozen chunk of meat, deep fried and smothered with gravy. Seeing as we recently spent time in Texas left this rendition lacking in my opinion. The only thing excellent here was the gravy. Overalls decent meal just not quite worth the price charged. Ate here for the first time yesterday, for breakfast. Very clean, friendly service. The model train that runs around and through the dining area is really cool. This was an unplanned stop during our trip from Boise to Seattle but I don't regret it. We arrived at around 1pm and were seated immediately. I got the Chicken fried steak, with two over easy eggs, two biscuits, and hash browns. The steak was tasty with a nice coating on the outside. The eggs were cooked properly to my requested doneness. The biscuits were average. The hash browns were fresh but not as crispy as I would have liked personally, if I go again I'll probably request them to be cooked extra crispy. My friend who got the pastrami jack melt with fries enjoyed his meal as well. I stole a few fries and really liked them. This was a present surprise with the great food and they even have a train that circles inside the restaurant that is pretty fun. Lots of train memorabilia on the walls and about too. I ordered a burger, but can't remember the name of it, but it was very large and tasted great. It came with a salad and I could eat all of it so my wife helped with my salad. Cute little train themed restaurant. We sat at a window table which I recommend because you got to watch the train go by. Also the have interesting trivia on each table for you to read through. Ok food. It's diner style and for what we got I was very satisfied. My sandwich was hot and tasty. I got the turkey Swiss avocado and the roll they used was not too soft and not hard. Everyone in our party seemed happy with what they got. Since I was on a road trip for this stop bathrooms were a big watch for me. 4 stars cause the bathroom was kinda gross and since they were busy it was a long wait. We are from California and we were on our way back from Idaho, and we randomly stop by here to fill up our tank of gas and go to the bathroom and then we found this diner across the street. It was charming with a little train tracks going through the restaurant and the food was absolutely delicious. I ordered chicken fried steak it was delicious. My niece ordered chicken fried bacon, yes I said bacon. And the cinnamon roll French toast absolutely the best breakfast I've had in a long time. Stopped in Friday evening at 7:30 . Placed an order for a burger and a brew . Burger showed up 40 minutes later . The burger was suppose to have fries. I was told they were out at the moment but had some cooking. Now that I've eaten the burger the fries arrived . I got the beer 15 minutes after placing the order. The person I was with ordered the exact same thing except with a coke. They never received the coke. Our waitress did apologize and acknowledged the poor service. In summation ,if you are in no hurry,not worried about service and not particularly worried about cleanliness the place is ok. I don't recommend it for service ,or food quality . Wow.. really impressed with SJR. A buddy from Poky said he ate here not too long ago and recommended it. Said they have a model train that runs through the restaurant that adds a nice touch. The first leg of our spring break vacation was Baker City and we decided to give SJR a shot. Not disappointed! Food was excellent- from the chef salad to spicy chicken tacos to chicken fried steak and the fried pickles- all was tasty. My only complaint... only 3 beer choices (all micro IPAs)- I did break down and have a Jack Porter (I believe that was the name) IPA pint- what?! I wanted a beer with dinner and an IPA was better than nothing. But seriously SJR- you need to expand your beer selection. Ok, back to dinner... prompt, friendly service; did I mention excellent food; and a fair price. Good job SJR and Baker City- we'll be back! read more

TRUCKER POST: Had the chicken omelet with a salad instead of potatoes or toast. Salad was very yummy, fresh mixed greens. The omelet was thin, which I love, but ALL DARK MEAT for $12 it was a little underwhelming. Coffee was good and always full. Server was very nice and wifi was free. I tried the Country fried Bacon breakfast and it was absolutely amazing ! My lovely wife had the Rubin which was actually the 4th one on our trip and was in absolutely heaven. Love this place! When we make the journey from Seattle to SLC as we occasionally do, we always time it so we can stop for a meal at Sumpter Junction each way. I have twin boys who are train-obsessed, so the train around the entire restaurant keeps them well-entertained, which is such a blessing when they've been trapped in the car for hours and hours. And my boys are SOOOO into trains that they have to "choo choo" very loudly and race around the restaurant, and I am very apologetic for them but the locals have been extremely patient and even amused. My boys have literally been talking about this restaurant since we went there a year ago (they were 3 years old!). That's how much they loved it...stayed in their little 3-year-old brains that vividly. The food is yummy, the service is excellent, and the people are awesome for putting up with us. Every time we make our way through Eastern Oregon we will stop at Sumpter Junction! read more

The perfect breakfast to start our day with. We wound up here when we found out that the Best Western's in-hotel restaurant was closed for remodeling. I'm glad we did. Very diner-esque on the whole, with some interesting decor. Our waitress was everything you'd expect from a country cafe, very sweet and attentive, made nice small talk. Was very impressed with our meals. My French toast, eggs, and bacon were pretty much as good as it gets. The coffee was perfectly strong, and never went low. My boyfriend's chicken fried steak was good, though I'm not a huge fan of this particular meal. I loved the trains. Super easy access off of the Interstate, tons of parking, room for trailers and RV's.
