Papa Al's was a very unexpected surprise. It is located conveniently a few minutes from my house. Plenty of parking in the front and in the lot. It is located not far from exit 9 on 84. The inside has beautiful decor and some nice paintings. The pizza is what really surprised me. It is probably some of the best Connecticut pizza I have eaten. We got a half regular half Florentine. The regular had some great sauce and cheese. It could give some of the places in New York a run for their money. The Florentine was put together nicely and tasted great. I really enjoyed the ricotta. I may have already found my new pizza spot on the first try. Five stars!

Slice Mob made another stop today, this time at Mangia Mi in Sandy Hook…read more What a great afternoon. From the minute we walked in, Chef Rebecca came over and welcomed all of us. You could tell right away this wasn't just another restaurant. It's her place, and she's proud of it. I really liked the vibe. Big open dining room, an open kitchen where you can watch everything being made, and family pictures all over the walls. It just feels comfortable. The pizza is New Haven-style apizza. The tomato pie was excellent. The San Marzano tomatoes really stand out. Nice fresh tomato flavor, a great bake, plenty of crunch, and a finishing dusting of grated cheese that pulled it all together without getting in the way. The cheese pizza was exactly what a cheese pizza should be. Sometimes the simplest pie tells you the most about a pizzeria, and this one didn't disappoint. My favorite was Donnie's Hot Pepper & Mushroom. The peppers brought just enough heat without taking over. The mushrooms added a nice earthy flavor that balanced everything out. Every bite just worked. One thing that stood out was that everything is made from scratch. You can taste it. Nothing felt like it came out of a bag or was rushed. Mangia Mi is the kind of place you leave already thinking about what you're ordering next time. We only scratched the surface today. I definitely want to come back and work my way through more of the pizzas, fresh pastas, seafood, and whatever specials Chef Rebecca is putting together. Thanks to Chef Rebecca and her team for taking such good care of the Slice Mob. We'll be back.

Amazing breakfast! Great customer service! A very pleasant environment to sit and enjoy our meal!read more

So, my wife and I, along with our tween daughter, visited Hilltop Kitchen on a whim last Saturday…read more First impressions were wonderful. The dining room was empty as we came early, and it looked beautiful. The entire restaurant, to the eye, is absolutely a vibe. There was one server on shift at the time and she was very nice and welcoming. We had very high hopes for the meal to come. We were fairly disappointed. It was during a brunch service. Initially ordered the calamari as an appetizer. Yes, calamari as a brunch app is kind of strange however since it was available I ordered it. I typically order this wherever I go, because I execution-wise, it's not the easiest thing to prepare correctly. This app was tiny, as in the serving size. Additionally the calamari itself was super small as well. No nice meaty rings. No crispy tentacles. Just a greasy mess. The dish purports the dipping sauce to be that of a fra diavolo, it was not. It was more like a marinara with chunky bits of aromatics and perhaps a bit of crushed red pepper. It was also very pricey given everything. Even if it were perfect, still on the pricey side. At the same time my daughter ordered French toast. For $18. We are talking $6 a slice of brioche. Wild business, that. As mains, my wife ordered the avocado toast. Which she actually seemed to enjoy, although the bread was soggy, and the other items on the plate severely lacking. I ordered the "lobster" cake eggs Benedict. If this was lobster, then I'm the Mother Theresa. It was, by my palate overly processed canned crab meat. At best, overly processed lobster meat, but I highly doubt that given the taste, color, and texture. The CRAB cake itself was meh, the accompanying potato hash was okay, and the hollandaise sauce was passable if not good. We ordered drinks as well. My lemon drop martinis were pretty good. My wife was dissatisfied with her margarita, then ordered a dirty martini that was okay. We walked out with a tab of nearly $200. To say it was worth the money would be absurd. I hate to be so blatantly honest with this review, but this experience (food and drink-wise) was not one I would recommend.

First time trying NewSylum Brewing Co. in Newtown, CT…read more NewSylum Brewing Co., opened its doors in 2020, the 15-barrel microbrewery sits on the historic campus of Fairfield Hills, a former psychiatric hospital. The name "NewSylum" cleverly bridges "Newtown" with the historical definition of "asylum" meaning a sanctuary or place of refuge. The taproom is housed in a beautifully restored, historic red brick colonial-style building. Customers can enjoy full table service inside the 9,000-square-foot space or relax in the extensive, dog-friendly outdoor seating areas. I've heard this area is full of paranormal activity if you're into that. We recommend the following wood-fired pizzas: -Hot Oil pie pizza -Pepperoni pizza -Korean BBQ pizza -Hot Italian pizza -Giant Pretzel Drinks: -Frozen Mudslide drink -Counting the days IPA We had excellent service and really enjoyed seeing historic photos of the old asylum room before building got renovated. We loved the feel of the place and how relaxed it was. We tried an assortment of beers and tried the pizza, hot dog with relish, and large pretzel. It is dog friendly and definitely kid friendly.
