Hann's Christmas Farm - New Barn with a Great Christmas Store!

Hann's Christmas Farm

Yesterday was our first visit to a Christmas tree farm--family with 3 kids--so we didn't know what…read moreto expect. There are a number of farms in the Madison area and we ended up at Hann's by accident (we were in Stoughton and it was the closest one). We got there at about 3:30pm on a Saturday, on a perfect-weather day (40 degrees and clear skies) so it was very busy, but there was plenty of parking. As soon as we walked up there was a Hann's employee in a bright yellow jacket asking if we needed help. We decided to go pre-cut since the sun was about to go down, so she directed us to the barn, where about 50 firs, pines and spruces were set up, ranging in height from 5' to 9'. We liked them all so much it took us about 20 minutes to pick one, during which time two friendly Hann's employees asked if we needed help and gave us advice about needle retention and ornament weight. When I picked one, the Hann's employee put a numbered tag on it and gave me a piece of paper with the number, and explained that we could watch them fresh-cut the bottom (a preservation tactic, like trimming the bottom inch of stem off flowers after delivery) and watch the shaking/baling (wrapping the tree in twine for transport), or we could go play in the kids' area or head into the store to pay for the tree and it would be waiting for us when we came back out. The kids watched the baling for a minute because it's kind of neat--the whole tree is sent through a circular machine that wraps it in twine in about 10 seconds, for some reason it's fun watching noisy farm equipment--then they went to play on the hay bale play structure. I went into the charming Christmas store, a barn full of freshly made wreaths, ornaments, tree stands and tree-care kits, decorations, homemade treats and hand-painted artwork. (We ended up getting a tree stand at Home Depot though, because of price/selection.) I was impressed again with how friendly the employees were, holding open the door and greeting us, asking if I had questions. After I paid, the cashier directed me to the next room of the barn toward the exit, where there was complimentary hot apple cider and a small seating area. I'm struck now by the efficiency of the operation--having people stationed in specific areas, directing customers from one station to the next, makes for a really smooth traffic flow so even a long line of people is a short wait. And the fact that all 9 of the employees I interacted with in my 1+ hours there were cheerful, friendly, helpful and knowledgeable, even at the end of what must have been a long and crowded day, was super impressive. The hot cider was a nice treat, and the kids raved about the play area. They've asked our neighbors if we can go back to get THEIR tree because it was such a fun experience, and we didn't even do the wagon rides or watch the live wreath-making (we're planning on spending more time there next year so we can do all that). An unexpected service--after purchasing the tree, we pulled our van into the line from the parking lot to the front of the barn/store, where two Hann's employees tied the tree to the top of the van with twine. By that time the sun had gone down and everyone's fingers had to be freezing, so I appreciated it even more (plus they did a better job than I would have done if I'd tried to do it myself!). Even the restrooms were impressive--two port-a-potties, but stainless steel with manual-pump flushers and water dispensers for handwashing. Next year we'll probably do the whole package, cutting down the tree ourselves, but for this year it was a perfect experience.

We purchased a 18' Fraser fir and a 10' Fraser fir and with in a week they were totally dried out…read morewe spent over 800.00. We came 2 1/2 hours we were told that they cut down that week and would be set up in the Barn but instead the were still wrapped up outside and they would only open one tree The employees were not very helpful or friendly it was almost like we bothering them to do there job. This place was over priced for what you get a dried out tree.

Summers Christmas Tree Farm - Precut trees

My family has been getting our tree at Summers Tree Farm for over 35 years. It's one of the…read morehighlights of the holiday season I look forward to every year. The property is GORGEOUS. The Summers are 2 of the most genuinely nice and friendly people you will ever meet in your life. And the whole experience is one of cherished memories. It sounds cheesy, but it's true. First the property. One of a handful left of its kind- a designated tree farm. No manure smells or anything like that. It's set at the beginning of where the driftless region begins- think gently rolling hills, tall evergreens swaying in the wind, ya it's Christmas Card/ Instagram worthy. You can even see the Capitol in the distance. It really is a special place. The way the property is set up is pretty smart. The parking area, gift shop and pre-cut trees are located in the middle of the property where is kinda like a bowl. The trees are on all sides up a gentle hill. This makes it easier to drag them out. It's easier to walk downhill with a tree rather than up hill, right? Now it's not crazy hilly like you're climbing mountains or anything, but just enough you won't want to wear high heels and flip flops- it is fall/ winter duh. If you think it's too much of a haul, they've got a bunch of workers eager to help for free. They'll saw it, drag it, tie it on , etc for no extra charge. Although if you're at all able bodied there's no reason you can't do it yourself. (Maybe get a few pointers if it's your first time tying a tree to your car.) After you've hiked around (trust me you're going to want to, the place is super pretty) and bailed your tree (free) and had the guys tie it to your car (free) they sell apple cider, hot cocoa, and some food. They also have a quaint Christmas shop. It's basically a Christmas themed Etsy shop. Tons of unique handmade trinkets and stuff you won't find anywhere else. Plus the Christmas shop is toasty warm, so it's a must visit :) If you can't tell, I think this place is pretty magical. Our family will never have a fake tree. Nothing represents Christmas like a Chinese plastic tree sitting in the middle of living room! Sure you could go to Costco and get a $40 dead tree that was cut down weeks ago in South Dakota and have all it's needles drop. Or you can go to this locally owned, family run business and have a bit of an adventure. Spending time with family is what this season is all about. So it's nice to put down the phone/iPad for an afternoon and get outdoors and make some memories.

We have visited tree farms all around us within a 45 minute radius ranging from Madison, Waunakee, Baraboo and on and on. Always searching for a stunning family Christmas tree. Not even knowing this hidden gem was right down the road from us the entire time. We are so happy we found this beautiful family farm within a few miles from our home. It is a family owned and operated company that grows the best quality of trees, beautifully groomed trees, many different tree styles and heights to choose from. A great local business that I will now fully support year after year. I have told several locals and friends even about this place. My family was just so impressed how they had row after row of just perfect trees... Usually we are pretty picky and like to search for a nice wide based fully branch filled tree and it takes a while of walking through all the rows trying to remember which one you liked best! Not here... All the trees are great! Plus they last a long time without shedding the needles. The customer service here is great. Prices are extremely fair for the quality of the trees you get. They are all very friendly and helpful. Like most places they will freshly cut the bottom of the tree for you if you would like, they shake it, and bundle wrap it for you. They have a cute gift shop where they offer free hot chocolate, lots of crafts, homemade goods, fudge, and all types of goodies and Christmas gifts to purchase! You can walk their fields to go hand cut your own tree with one of their provoded hand saws and drag it back yourself or you can take a wagon ride out to the fields depending on how busy they are. Then they will bring it back for you. All in all just one of the coolest tree farms we have ever been too. Beautiful old barn on the property that is a must see. Also a fun fact! They own the world's largest horse "Jake" So you can tour their barn and visit this huge horse. Check that off your bucket list!

Forced family event turns to great experience…read more This place has such a great selection of pre cut or cut your own. Seems like the majority is Frazier but we went pine this year for the first time. Loved the different areas spread all over to cut your own. They even have atvs driving around to take your cut tree to the shake station. If you have little kids there's some fun stuff and they have drinks and food. Happy we ventured here. Worth the 1-1/2 hour drive.

A tradition that started with 4 or 5 of us and has grown to 8. We have not actually bought a Tree from there in years (They're Overpriced) but our friends always do, they love the tradition of cutting their own tree, their oldest son has taken on the responsibility, something he is very proud of. There is obviously MUCH MUCH more than just trees though, Our kids love the animals, santa, snacks, and shops. We always bring a few adult beverages to chat around the outdoor firepits, spend quality time together roaming the property, petting the animals, indulging their delicious foods and making new memories. Williams is without a doubt the best option in the Rockford Area and I would highly recommend bringing your family and friends.
