Would give zero stars if I could.
This is actually my second time at Panza, the first time was alright which is why I came back again, this time as a party of four. To be fair, the food itself was fine, but the SERVICE WAS TERRIBLE. We had such a bad experience tonight I literally thought I was secretly being filmed for a What Would You Do episode.
All went well until the bill came - the four dishes added together came to $80. The receipts are all hand-written, so theres no description as to what numbers are what, but somehow the total came to $100.60 although the subtotal was $80, and the tax was only about $5.50. We were confused as to how the total was over 100, so we asked our waiter and he changed his story multiple times - first saying that "the restaurant is charging EVERYONE a mandatory 18% tip (it was more like 20% btw) because IT'S SUCH A BUSY WEEKEND and its a HOLIDAY." The guy is literally nuts! What holiday??? It was becoming more and more clear to us that he assumed we were the typical tourists who didn't know a thing and would just pay whatever was given to us, but we're actually locals so this shocked us all.
Then he proceeded to say that "it's a Massachusetts state law, that it's a law to charge a tip AFTER tax." First of all, this was the first time in my life that a waiter had added HIS OWN TIP (of over 20%, mind you), for a party of four. Now, it's one thing if you are a large party and they charge a mandatory minimum for a tip, but those are usually for parties of six or more and would be written on the menu.
We then checked with the table sitting behind us, a table of six. They said their waiter (they had a lady as their waiter, supposedly the manager), DID NOT WRITE A PRE-CALCULATED TIP ON THEIR CHECK. So, our waiter then said that "I decide the tip, the waiter decides the tip." Umm wtf??? Since when does the waiter ever decide the tip?? Tips are based off of the customer's experience of how the service was.
Long story short, this place is a money-grubbing, discriminatory restaurant with just mediocre food. Please, take your hard-earned money elsewhere, ANYWHERE, so that you don't risk getting your day ruined by such a horrible experience.
The manager herself was also unkind and unprofessional, telling us to "leave however much [tip] we want." How is she servicing customers at a restaurant? She needed to apologize for her employee's attitude and discriminatory treatment, at the very least. But no, her own attitude left us believing that the entire establishment is discriminatory.
The waiter then came back and said our new total is $99.50. Basically, he took off 50 cents. Oh, and he had the AUDACITY to say WE WERE BEING CHEAP. That was the final straw.
IS THIS HOW YOU, AS A PAYING CUSTOMER, WANT TO BE TREATED??? Go somewhere else. This place was so bad service-wise that I made an account just to write this warning to other customers. read more
