Yeah, so I have no idea what these reviews are saying.... 4 stars, really? I'm not sure these people actually ate food there or it was just a bad day but this is an honest review. I'd give this more of a 1.5 star.
I was looking for quick lunch in the neighborhood on the fourth of July because all the restaurants we planned to eat were closed for the holiday. I found this restaurant via Yelp. I thought four-star restaurant wouldn't be that bad, but boy, I was wrong.
There wasn't many people when we first walked in. The waitress let us pick a table, so we sat down. Service was prompt and efficient. The menu was short but promising. We got the wild mushroom & goat cheese spring roll for an appetizer to share. I ordered the linguine alla pescatore with fra diavolo sauce. My boyfriend got the seafood risotto.
The wild mushroom & goat cheese spring roll came out. It was two spring rolls cut in half to make it into four pieces with honey as sauce. And some green lettuce. What? $7 for that? The spring roll was actually pretty decent. I'm not a fan of goat cheese, but the flavors worked pretty well. Nonetheless, the portion was tiny. The green lettuce they put as garnish was unflavored and had some edges were turning slightly black (and did not look that fresh at all). I was hungry so I added some salt and pepper to the lettuce, mixed some honey into it and ate it. Whatever.
Then the entrees came. And boy, was it disappointing! Ok, the portions were huge this time, but I'm not sure what happened but the seafood looked like those frozen seafood mix in a bag and it was bland and rubbery (just didn't taste like anything). Fra diavolo sauce had some slow heat which I liked but again it just didn't taste good. Did they not flavor this sauce? No herbs? Not even enough salt? It was like bland tomato sauce with some heat. Linguine was ok (I would have preferred al dente but at least it wasn't overcooked). After the first bite, I was wondering what is this overpriced crap I'm eating. In my mind, I was thinking "gee, buying a $2 bottle of pasta sauce and heating it up and adding some more herbs/pepper on it at home had more flavor than this pasta." I picked on it for a bit, ate some seafood and I just stopped eating. I've had amazing pasta for $18. I wasn't expecting something amazing here, but I certainly wasn't expecting this pasta which was not even restaurant quality at all.
My boyfriend's seafood "risotto" was worse. Ok, so a risotto is not just cooked rice. The rice has steeped with flavor by reducing it down with ingredients. It is usually known for its creamy texture. This "risotto" was just bland wet Arborio rice with some seafood on it. It had no flavor. It wasn't even seasoned right with salt. It was probably the worst risotto I've ever had at a restaurant. It was edible (it wasn't disgusting or anything) but I bet if I tried to make a risotto (which I haven't), I'd make a better risotto and I'm not even a good cook. My boyfriend who isn't that picky about food stopped halfway through it.
I'm not sure what other people are raving about. The mushroom & goat cheese spring roll was good but not amazing. The entrees were very much like amateur home cook style food (a food that if your grandma made for you, you would just eat it because it's passable and you're just being respectful for the effort), which we paid almost $20 each for. It just wasn't restaurant quality food. The food was so disappointing and overpriced. I don't mind spending money on good food, but I hate it wasting money on bad food too.
By the time we were leaving, the place was packed. The one server who was managing all the tables, of course, couldn't handle all of the tables. The server was running everywhere and was working hard, but it took forever to get our check. I felt bad for the server and left her a decent tip.
Maybe it was just a bad day because it was a holiday, but I am so distraught about how many good reviews this place has, so I wanted to impart some honest review on it. I'd never want to come back here again. Even if the meal was free. read more
